Backup to Gmail

I recently deleted a contact from my Iphone.  I checked ICloud and it was deleted there as well.  However, just by chance I checked my GMail account (used a couple of years ago to back up android phone).  The contact was there with current information that I updated a few months ago.  Why is my IPhone backing up to my GMail account?  Thanks.

First Thunderbird portable is supported by its author at portableapps.com.
Secondly you are describing exactly how the IMAP email standard works and Thunderbird has no control over that.
Thunderbird has Local Folders to move messages that you want to keep locally. Maybe the portable version does too.

...my post also deletes on Thunderbird. Please make an option to prevent it, so deleting on a server doesn't effect mail in the Thunderbird. I would be so happy to have it...

  • Backup to gmail problems

Recently after switching to the droid razr maxx, my backup to gmail app hasn't been doing what it's supposed to do. It backs up all my sms messages that I've sent, but doesn't always backup the incoming text messages. Any help? Need this problem to be solved. Thank you.

An email will not be in the account's Sent mailbox unless the message was successfully sent. What happens to a message after it is successfully sent has nothing to do with the iPhone or with the iPhone's Mail application, or with any email client used to send a message that was successfully sent.
You should contact Google customer or technical support.

  • HT204266 Is there an SMS backup to Gmail App for the iPhone 4S?

Does anyone know an App that exists for the iPhone 4S that works like the Droid SMS Backup where all incoming and outgoing texts go straight to Gmail.  I need them for legal records of converstaions.

Good idea. I've already used the feedback for my general suggestions to improve the way Apple handles bug reports (and tried sending it to Steve Jobs too), but I'll send a specific suggestion for a bug app on the iPhone.
However, my question is whether there is a simple way to send bug reports from the iPhone now that I have overlooked.

I just want to back up all the info in my gmail account folders

In Time Machine, you can select which folders you don't want to back up. Open System Preferences > Time Machine > Options, and add the folders you don't want to make backups to excluded list.
If you only want to make a backup of some folders, you might consider the option to use a third-party application like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper, that allow you to select which folders you want to back up`

  • HT1766 I have multiple issues, backup password, Gmail Error Msg, and ID problems.

I want to back up to my computer, but can not remember my username. I thought it would be the same as my Apple password but it isn't. Is there anyway to recover it. I actually just want to turn it off.
Also, does anyone know why my husband's phone defaults to my Apple ID everytime he wants to download something?  I look at the user ID in the Store and it has his user ID, but to sign it, it shows mine and wants my password?
Also, I get an error message if I try and use the mail app for GMail. And sometimes purchase I make end up on husbands phone.
P.S. I have Iphone 4S and my husband has Iphone 4. I hope that can help someone, so I can fix some of these issues.
I know these are a lot of issues, but if any one can help even a little with one or some of these problems, I will be so grateful and a load off my mind.
    Thank you in advance.

on your husband iphone - go to setting - app store - apple id - log out and log in with his id.
If your using a app for Gmail, I suggest contacting the app developer or see if they have a support forum.

I don't quite understand what you've posted. Have you cancelled your Gmail account?
If you've just connected Mail to Gmail, and you've used IMAP to connect to it, you'll probably have an "All Mail" mailbox towards the bottom left of the screen (under the GMail mailbox). In there should be a Sent Mail box. All your Sent mail should be in there. To have it appear in the Sent mailbox at the top left of your screen, highlight Gmail's Sent Mail mailbox, click the Mailbox menu at the very top of your screen, and click "Use this Mailbox for - Sent".

  • Backup Gmail using Mail.app and IMAP

I would like to backup my Gmail emails using Apple Mail. I have IMAP turned on in Gmail. I know I need to add the account in Mail but I'm not sure what to do after that. I'm thinking I need to create a local mail folder in order to store the emails.
Also, how could I automate this? Is Mail the best option for this scenario? Again, I'm only wanting this as a backup for Gmail.

How about avoiding redundancy (http://superuser.com/questions/114253/backup-gmail-using-mail-app-and-imap-witho ut-redundancy)?
I got this all working, there's even this literally great guide on my superuser post (http://db.tidbits.com/article/10253) but IMAP generates a lot of repeated files due to gmail labels nature.
Anyone knows a way to circle around this and still be able to use IMAP and labels with mail.app and gmail?

  • Lion Address Book problem - all of over 2,000 contacts disappeared - one mysteriously reappeared - then they all reappeared during resync with Gmail!

The subject iine pretty much describes what happened.
I am wondering if it is anything to do with what looks like an odd file in the directory ~ Library -> Application Support -> Address Book
As well as the "real" database file there is this zero bytes one:
    AddressBook-v22.abcddb.0F392545-78F2-4AE6-8D30-457C138332B2.unknown
From the date, it might be something to do with installing and linking Cobook to Address Book maybe?
These are the files and folders in that directory (sub-directory files not shown):
I have enabled the debug menu in Address Book but have not been able to find any info about how to use it.  I lie!  I did read that I might possibly have been able to "retrieve" the contacts using the debug menu "Force Refresh" - however that was after I had started to resync with Gmail contacts.
I realised that something odd was going on during resync when I saw that there were over 4,000 contacts being processed rather than the 2,000 or so that I was expecting.  Initially, none of the contacts groups from Gmail were showing in Address Book after this partial sync (I stopped it when I saw what was happening).  However, after quitting and restarting Address Book, the groups appeared again.
I have not lost my contact data - as well as Gmail contacts I also have an Address Book backup from about two weeks ago and also the backup created by Cobook about two weeks ago.  (Installed Cobook as it looked like a very efficient way of getting to view individual contacts quickly - Quicksilver just isn't finding them at all).  I used third party app "Contacts Sync for Google Gmail" to link Address Book with Gmail as it gives you options about what to do for each duplicate card that it identifies.
I then spent a lot of time sorting through the contacts on Address Book, finding duplicates, updating data, etc. with the intention of managing contacts in Address Book from then on, rather than in Gmail. Not all of these changes are reflected in the Cobook backup or Gmail.
My worry is, with Lion being such a god-awful Pig's Ear in so many more ways than this, that this Address Book mess might happen again.
I seem to have spent most of my time over the last month wrestling with the numerous problems that keep cropping up with Lion and getting little to show for it.
WARNING! FOOT-STAMPING WHINGE ABOUT LION - LOOK AWAY AND DOWN TO THE HOWLING FACES - IT WON'T BE ANYTHING THAT YOU HAVEN'T HEARD BEFORE:
I gave up on OSX when I tried Panther - that was dreadful - but was lured back by Tiger, have used Leopard very comfortably for about 5 years, had a very happy couple of months with Snow Leopard and now - this mess that is Lion!  I have repaired OSX install permissions and "home user" permissions time and again, TinkerTooled it until I am blue in the face and it seems that every few days I manage to fix something and then almost immediately something else screws up. I can't upgrade to Mountain Lion on this machine and am seriously considering installing or running Linux as these problems with Lion are just never-ending - and then there are all the other stupid changes that have subsequently been sensibly reverted, mitigated or worked around in ML).
I have never bothered much with Address Book or Mail in the past as I have found them too limited.   I have used either the Gmail web interface or Thunderbird.  However, Gmail has started crashing my favourite browsers (Seamonkey and Firefox), Thunderbird has got just a bit too complicated and I cannot get Quicksilver to play ball with Gmail.  The Lion version of Address Book is better than Gmail Contacts and Mail Smart Folders can emulate Gmail filters and labels - a huge improvement.  So, just when these apps look good enough to be worth bothering with, they come part and parcel with what I have seen mocked, and rightly, as "Apple Vista"!
Sorry for that  but I am about at the end of my tether with it all ;-/
I would be very grateful if anyone can offer any advice about:
    1) That strange looking zero bytes file in the Address Book folder.
    2) Whether the Address Book debug menu options might be of any help in this situation?
There seem to be lots of people having problems with Address Book in both Lion and Mountain Lion, if not exactly this issue, so maybe the answers will help others too.
    Fingers crossed!
    Ms Mousette
ps. In the product list to tick for this question they are grouped so I cannot specify that this is actually nothing to do with the iPhone.  I have got a load of contacts on my iPhone too but I am not going to sync them until I have got this issue sorted out.

Could this font be the cause of the problem?
Possibly, since that font is not the one that Address Book uses and there is no method to specify or change the font used by Address Book. You could have recovered your Address Book contacts without syncing, so that could also be part of the problem. You should always make a keep a backup of your Address Book on your computer and in another safe location whenever you make any change to it.
May I ask why you haven't updated to 10.4.11 yet, as it provides various bug fixes and security enhancements?

  • Why do I keep losing my "notes"?

Why do I keep losing my "notes"?

I have been losing notes off and on for almost 2 years now. Contract is almost up--will probably switch over to a Galaxy next time.
Notes are extremely important to me. I have NO idea why they disappear. Here is what I learned.
Originally the notes were backed up to my Yahoo account as many of you found out. When you lose one, you will find it in your Notes folder in your Yahoo email account. Similar backup with Gmail.
I started using iCloud for notes a month ago. The huge advantage is that you can compose or paste in large amounts of text from your desktop device, and they are pushed immediately to the iPhone. Editing is a breeze now.
But wait—what happens if you lose a note?  I lost my main shopping list this morning while at Home Depot. iCloud is immediately updated, and the note is erased! No backup. So I have resorted to drafting emails of each note which are then saved in iCloud email Draft folder. Works for now, but a horrible workaround for what should be a robust app. Shame on you Apple.

  • Saving copies of email as PDF or Pages/Word documents

I have to save certain emails that I receive and keep them as a permanent record, as a PDF, Word etc...file. It needs to be something that others can view with a PC. I have been using Google to download my emails as a PDF, then save them to my PC but this can only be done one message at a time and is very tedious. Im wondering if there is a way to do this straight from mail on my imac to make life easier? Does anyone know of any other ways I can accomplish this?

You may be able to somewhat automatically use an email app
such as Thunderbird to get a duplicate of your GMail to your
computer; or use an iMap or POP setup (as discussed else-
where, online, when addressing actual archiving of Gmail to
a computer or at least a non-google server archive.)
{Since I don't use an email app nor do I use the ISP's provided
email account system, but have used a few free web mail sites
before Gmail from Google; I now solely use Gmail, and could
use an easier method, too, of archiving direct to the computer.
    But I do not want to set up an email client software to do this.}
The ease, if it existed, of being able to have Gmail create a
downloadable .zip archive of email in dated batches, could
save a bit of time. Of course, having to open and read through
them to find a single important email's content takes away time.
There are a few ideas online about how to archive and access
Gmail, to a computer's hard disk drive or similar archive; but
one that looked somewhat promising has not made the transition
to Mac OS X in a handy GUI form: "Gmail Backup."
You could use the Gmail "archive" system in your Gmail account
and that would keep those mail items apart from your recent stuff.
Or, send those emails to a second gmail account. That would only
give you the dates they were forwarded and not a "by date" filing
system; so making copies that way makes a new kind of job of it.

    http://ask-leo.com/howdo_i_backup_mygmail.html
Perhaps someone has a better idea in some shareware tool or
an easier path to set up a POP or other account and use a second
app such as Thunderbird to handle or make actual offline archives.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Help requested on IMAP/email migration

    I'm looking for some advice.
I've been using my Gmail via both webmail and POP via Apple Mail for more than the last year on my Powerbook.
I've got god-knows-how-many emails filed away in a logical folder hierarchy on the machine (which I prune and delete from), while I leave the contents of the Gmail webmail pretty much alone (even less-necessary emails) and regard as an online failsafe backup should I need an old/deleted email, as well as an away-from-the-desk solution (via mobile or others' computers). I've had my client choose not to delete messages after downloading them from the server.
I just recently got a new Macbook and was planning on finding a way to migrate my Mail.app mailboxes from the Powerbook to the new machine. Not having got around to doing this, I've been using the webmail interface solely and have become quite fond of this over and above using a Mail.app bloated with years' worth of mail. Now Gmail has IMAP support and I'm keen to scope things out vis-a-vis an integrated experience...
What's the best thing for me to do/setup for me to have all round... ?
    - I was thinking of creating the new Gmail account as IMAP on the new Macbook, then migrating my old mailboxes from the Powerbook in to Mail.app so that they would get synced back up to the webmail interface with my folder hierarchy mirrored as labels. Would this work/be good?
    - In order to do this, seems I first (on setting up the IMAP account in Mail.app) need to download all mail from Gmail. To which end, Mail.app is currently a hive of activity, downloading hundreds of messages and otherwise communicating with the server. I'm not entirely sure what's going on (nearly 3,000 new messages currently in Mail.app so far apparently).
    - Whatever, if, after this process is complete, I replace these newly created mailboxes in Mail.app with the old mailboxes from my Powerbook's Mail.app (with the preferred folder hierarchy), will they then be deleted from my webmail, where they have safely nestled for the last year as a repository?
    - Should something go wrong and I end up overwriting my webmail Gmail by moving any local mail on to it, is there a way I can backup my Gmail webmail as it is now?
How can I best preserve both sets of mail?
And what on earth am I doing?

Hey Rich.  Once in 'settings,' there should be a "days to sync' under the 'data usage' section.   You don't have that?

  • HTC Droid Incredible - Power Cycling

I am having issues with my Droid incredible powering itself off. For months it worked with no problem at all, now it happens constantly. It will be fine and out of nowhere it shuts itself off and as it is powering back on, many times it will actually cycle off again before it completes it's reboot. On multiple occasions it has had to be "factory data reset" as all apps are wiped out once it finally finishes cycling on and off.
I have tried limiting any installed applications to ensure that they are not the problem, and am still getting the issue. The only things on the phone are the items initiated at set up (contacts from backup assistant, gmail account, facebook account, yahoo mail account, and twitter) and it is still happening. Verizon sent a replacement phone, and within the first 3 days, it happened three times without me being able to even install any apps.
Has anyone run into this, know what may be causing this, or hopefully how to fix it?

    richardsara wrote:
Mine has been doing the same thing. My husband kept telling me that I just use it to much or I need to stop breaking phones....lol, I did actually break one of them. But this is rediculous, I can't even get online sometimes before it freezes then shuts down. I have noticed when it does this the back feels hot. My brother in-law who works for Verizon told me to take the battery out for a while then it should be fine. Well I did that and was still having issues. So I talked to him again and he said to turn the power offf for like an hour a day so it can rest. Yup tried that too....doesn't matter still powers itself down when it feels like it. I am glad its not just me and I am not the only one this is happening to. Just proves that I am not breaking it....there is just a problem with it. What is the solution if it is no longer under warranty? Just deal with it until your contract is up?
    Hi richardsara,
If your phone is no longer under warranty we can still provide you troubleshooting steps that may resolve the issue and you can still benefit from future software updates (if any) developed by the manufacturer. Since you already did a soft reset (battery pull) I would recommend to do a Hard Reset to your phone. This will bring your phone back to factory settings and will resolve any issues resulting from corrupted system files or 3rd applications conflicts.
Please keep in mind that performing a hard reset will remove ALL data including the Google account, system data, application data, application settings, and downloaded applications.

  • Mail.app shows large emails; no attachments

So I decided to backup my Gmail account by starting up Mail for the first time and syncing. I would like to archive all my emails and attachments so I can delete my Gmail account.
After about an hour when it was all done syncing up I noticed that some large emails (8-30mb) had no attachment icon or any files visible at all. I know for a fact that those emails indeed should have files because my Gmail account displays them without issue. The text in the emails is unaffected.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The conversation view is set to on, and I believe that it's always been set that way since I got a Gmail account back in 2006. So are you saying that when I view my Gmail account from within Mail.app the large messages without attachments are just part of the conversation and that the attachments are only present in the original message? If that's the case, does that mean that the message in Mail.app is not actually the size it says and is only referring to the first message's size? That doesn't quite add up because my Gmail (web) says that my account has used up 2.6gb of space while Mail.app has accumulated 14.69gb after syncing! However when I selected 'Archive Mailbox' in Mail.app the folder it created was 4.31gb. Something isn't adding up!
