Backup to hard drive or NASA device

Does anyone know a way to backup to a hard drive instead of a cd on a PC?

This article tells you how to do it:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1751?viewlocale=en_US
But it is really better to use backup software as you can make incremental backups that just backup changes after the initial backup. This is much faster.
Normally you would back up all your data like this.

  • Time Capsule can't backup external hard drives connected to it. Got that.

Hello Apple Support Communities! This is my first post. Hope this finds you all well My first year as an Apple user. I bought a 2-Tb TC and am running my first backup to my MacBook as I write this.
Problem statement: TC can't backup external hard drives connected directly to it, but the ones connected to the Macs that are connected wirelessly to it. Duly noted. However, the Spotlight will reindex the hard drives connected to the Mac and that will take hours; the whole backup will take days. Thus, excluding the hard drives at "System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy tab" will probably help reduce the time of backup, or just ejecting them will do too. That itself has not proven effective coz it's still taking forever (50Gb in 2 days, still going).
    Questions:
    1) Do I wait until my first backup to my MacBook's internal hard drive is done before I connect my hard drives to my MacBook and attempt another backup? If yes, how do I go about the excessive time Spotlight reindexing takes if I intend to backup my hard drives connected to my MacBook?
    2) Is there any other way of speeding up the first-time backup?
*Note: All versions of OS and firmwares are up-to-date. TC is connected to an external wireless router. TC is intended to be used as backup device and / or file server only.

How do I backup the externel hard drives connected to my MB. I was under the impression that that has already been done, because I've read it somewhere in a discussion that said it's done automatically unless I exclude it from a backup, which I didn't. So it's supposed to backup the external hard drivestoo because I had them connected to my MB the entire time during the backups.
By default an external drive is excluded.. the list is odd.. if I plug a drive into the mac.. it immediately is listed as excluded.
This is not the list of included.. this is the list of excluded.. remove it from the excluded list to include it.
It is kind of reverse polish notation in backups.
If I want to enter the Time Machine, should I enter it with the TM turned on or off?
Not sure what the question means. If you use the star wars display and want to recover files then use TM off.. but read up pondini.. how to do restore etc.
    http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
15A in particular on the how to use TM.
When do I uplug the ethernet and use the wireless connection instead?
Once you have finished the main backup you can go back to wireless. The incremental backups are mostly very small.

  • Backup External Hard Drive with Time Machine

I have several external hard drives and am wondering if I can use Time Machine to backup External Hard Drive #1 on Hard Drive #2? Or is it only possible to backup your Main Machine on an External Hard Drive?
    Thanks

These issues with non-apple format drives that you mention, would they concern the dedicated Time Machine external hard drive, the external hard drive one is looking to backup, or both?
What are the issues raised? My current 500GB external hard drive is FAT-32 and I want to use an additional 500GB external hard drive [fresh out the box so I can determine whatever format it is fairly easily] as the dedicated Time Machine backup. Would you suggest reformatting my 500GB FAT-32 drive before initiating the new drive as the dedicated Time Machine backup? It's possible to do so, but would take quite some time. Also, this may move into a different subject, but I enjoy being able to share files with a PC with Windows XP using my external hard drive; would any of the formats you mentioned as being Time Machine-safe allow me to continue to do so?

I have a hard drive which is attached to my iMac 24*7. I plan to move all my movies & pictures over to it. Would the Time Machine backup (through a different hard drive) backup my Hard drive?

Yes, TM will back up any Mac-formatted volume attached to your Mac.

  • How do I export video files from iPhoto to a backup external hard drive for safekeeping?

How do I export video files from iPhoto to a backup external hard drive for safekeeping?  Each time I try, the video will not play from the external hard drive.

Use the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export menu option with Kind = Original.  That should get the original video file exported.  Try to export one to the Desktop first and open it with Quicktime Player.  If all goes well export the rest to a folder on the EHD. How is the EHD formatted?  It should be OS X Extended (journaled).

  • HT3728 do i have to do separate backup to hard drive for each user?

Do i have to do separate backup to hard drive for each user?

Sorry, I am not understanding what you are trying to say.
Time Machine is software on your Mac that allows it to back up to another hard drive.
A Time Capsule is an Apple wireless router with a built in hard drive that can be used to store Time Machine backups from one or more Mac computers.

  • I have 21,000  photos stored in iphoto. I have a WD 1.5TB backup external hard drive.  What is the best way to erase about half of my photos on my internal hard drive?

I have 21,000  photos stored in iphoto. I have a WD 1.5TB backup external hard drive.  What is the best way to erase about half of my photos on my internal hard drive?

Here's one way to do what you want:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
Now you have two full versions of the Library.
    3. On the Internal library, trash the Events you don't want there
Now you have a full copy of the Library on the External and a smaller subset on the Internal
    Some Notes:
As a general rule: when deleting photos do them in batches of about 100 at a time. iPhoto can baulk at trashing large numbers at one go.
You can choose which Library to open: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
You can keep the Library on the external updated with new imports using iPhoto Library Manager

  • Using Time Capsule as a dedicated external hard drive + back up device

I am running very low on storage space on my current Macbook so I was wondering if I could permanently transfer data to Time Capsule and use it as an external hard drive. If so, can I still also use it to back up the rest of the data on my Macbook? Just trying to figure out my best alternative to clear space on my Macbook. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hello flyeaglesfly. Wecome to the Apple Discussions!
If you are intending on using Time Machine (TM) for your MacBook's backups you will run into the dilemma of it trying to use all of the available hard disk space on your Time Capsule (TC).
    You have several options:
o Remove/repartition/replace the TC's internal hard drive. Use one of the partitions for TM backups and the other for NAS. Note: This will must likely void your warranty since you will need to open the TC to do this.
o Create a disk image of the desired size for NAS on the TC's internal hard drive. The drawback of this approach is that Windows clients will not be able to access this disk image.
o Attach an external USB hard drive to the TC. Use the internal drive for TM and the external drive for NAS ... or vice versa.

  • HT201250 How to use time machine external hard drive on other devices

I have an external hard drive which i usually use to back up my macbook pro via time machine but if i put pictures or songs on the external hard drive and connect it to a gaming concole or a pc nothing happens. The concole and pc doesn't recognize the device. Is there anything i can do to make it so i can access files from other devices while still using it for time machine?

The external drive is Mac formatted for Time Machine. Your gaming console and PC won't be able to read its format.
If you are determined to use it for both purposes, you can partition the drive in Disk Utility. Format the PC partition for MS-DOS or whatever is required for your gaming console. You may or may not have sufficient space for both partitions. If you do not you will have to erase your Time Machine backups.

  • I want wireless connection to backup external hard drive 400 feet away in an unheated out building.

I know nothing about this stuff. I have a 250gb external hard drive that I want to put in an outbuilding 400 feet away from my HP dv9000 with Windows Vista 32 bit (with some sort of "HP Wireless LAN" thinngy) as a backup in case my house burns down. I want to be able to access it in real time from my keyboard. What's the best cheapest way to do that? I have 110v ac in the outbuilding hardwired through a circut breaker panel to my house.

You have a long distance between the devices. Even with a directional antenna you are probably very close to the maximum range of what is possible under ideal circumstances.
Interference with other electronic devices or other WLANs in the neighborhood may further decrease the signal quality.
My guess is even under pretty much ideal conditions with this distance you will only be able to get very slow connections even with the newest 11n routers. I think you will be very lucky if you will get close to 1Mbit/s over this distance. With 200GB to backup it will take a couple of weeks over this link to get everything there...
With 200GB to backup I would rather get 2 USB drives, do alternating backups to those drives over night and store the USB drives someplace else. IMHO that will be much faster and more reliable then backups over a wireless link.

  • Backup external hard drive not working in 8.1

Updated to 8.1 and now my Iomega external hard drive (for weekly backup) is now not working. It shows up in the 'devices' but then backup will not recognise it as a valid option to continue my backup. Suggestions please?

    Hi UKPOL,
Please refer to this How to Geek article.
Win 8.1 no longer supports a graphical interface for backing up files or creating system images. You must use powershell or Win 8.1's reset/refresh options.
You can also create custom refresh images. Please see this article. The instructions also work with Win 8.1.
You would have to use third party backup software for backing up files and folders.

  • Accessing Time Capsule and linked external hard drive from other devices and copying to these drives

    Hi
Please be gentle. I am not that technically able :-)
I have managed to set up my time capsule. Router working, external hard drive linked, time machine back ups working...
The last thing I am looking to do is to access files on my time capsule and also external hard drive (linked to it), from Mac, Iphones, Ipads, Apple TV, Windows laptops X2. Am I able to do that? Have read so many discussions but dont get the answer. Please be gentle :-)
    Regards
    Tommy

The last thing I am looking to do is to access files on my time capsule and also external hard drive (linked to it), from Mac
This should be automatic.. find the TC disk under shared in finder.. double click it and see under the data folder.. you can create new folders in there.
Note using the TC for data and TM backups is not the greatest of ideas.. please read pondini.
    Q3 here. http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
The external drive is fine though..
Now it can have loads of issues if you run Mavericks.. so if you have trouble.. do not be surprised.. if you run Mavericks.. be surprised if it works without trouble.
    Iphones, Ipads
iOS devices are not file based.. they are not intended to be used with a file device like TC and will neither backup to it nor open files from it.. of course what apple wants and what users want are different things so there are plenty of file apps to help you read and write files.
    Filebrowser is the major one.
    http://www.stratospherix.com/products/filebrowser/
You still cannot backup though.. iOS uses itunes to backup or icloud.
    Apple TV
There is nothing you can do with AppleTV.. it is not a file device at all.. it is not even a media player.. it is a streamer. (Early model Gen1 and Gen2 can be jailbreak.. so they do actually have media player ability) Gen3 is tied to its mother's (iTunes) skirts with steel cables.. no JB.. no use really. If you want to play movies from a TC buy a WD Live TV.. it is a player.. !!
    Windows laptops X2
You can access the TC from windows..
    1. Make sure the TC naming complies with windows networking.. to put that simply.. all names should be short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric. Apple wizard will recommend a name for the TC, like
Fred Blog's Airport Time Capsule.. this is wrong on so many levels.
It will be a total pain on windows.. use FBATC or TC or anything you like.. as long as it follows the rules..
Short 2-20 characters.. less than 10 is better.
    No spaces.
    Pure alphanumeric.
All names must comply.. TC name and wireless name/s
    2. Load the airport utility for windows into the computer.. you can download for up to win7.. apple haven't bothered with windows since then and are pretty out of date. The win7 utility will load on win8 with the usual voodoo and astrological help.
    3. Windows must be set to home for location.. if you cannot open a command window and ping the TC by ip and name, then pull down the firewalls.
    4. In windows explorer type into the address bar directly.
\\TCname or \\TCIPaddress (using, of course, the real name or real IP).
