Backup to Time Capsule too big for wifi - can I start again and use ethernet?

Hi all,
I've just bought a 2TB Time Capsule, and I was hoping (stupidly) to make my initial Time Machine backup from my MacBook Pro (OSX Mountain Lion) overnight using wifi. The backup is roughly 400GB, and obvously it only managed about 20GB of that. I've hunted down an ethernet cable today but I can't seem to figure out how to make this work - it won't seem to use ethernet when I try to continue the backup.
If you know how to help with this, please do let me know - I absolutely have to get this computer backed up this weekend.
Many thanks,
Merlin

Fantastic, thank you! So, it really is as simple as switching the network mode of the TC in Airport Utility to 'Off' when I want to use ethernet?
Kappy - status in Airport utility has two amber lights for 'Internet Connection' and 'No DNS Servers' - I assume all this means is that it has no wireless internet connection?

  • Wireless backup to Time Capsule too slow?

    Hi to all,
I have a working wi-fi network: a 500gb time capsule + 2 airport express (the old b/g model); the capsule is WDS main, each express is a remote wds.
*normal network file transfers run at acceptable speed*, however time machine has a lot of problems:
    (1) the first backup ~80gb was made via 1Gb ethernet in a few hours -- perfect
    (2) incremental backups take a VEEERY long time to do... basically nothing. here's a log: 40 minutes to transfer 1KB!

    (3) time machine is indeed very fragile. if I put the computer to sleep while t.m. is running, the next time I read this in console:
    Node requires deep traversal:/ reason:kFSEDBEventFlagMustScanSubDirs|kFSEDBEventFlagReasonEventDBUntrustable|
and it takes 4 or 5 hours to backup few MB
in this case, network activity is high: it seems that macbook is downloading a lot from time capsule... anyway it stays a lot of time in "preparing backup", and even when it starts backup, it backs up soooo slowly.
    here's what I tried:
    (1) format time capsule and restart
    (2) erase spotlight index in macbook, reindex everything with time machine off, then reactivate spotlight
    (3) turned off wds remotes and connected directly to time capsule
    any other hint?
    thanks, MH

Here's a new conjecture: TM via ethernet works smoothly.
May this be related to wi-fi encryption (I use WPA2)?

  • I purchased a 3TB Airport Time Capsule After 8 hours been able to configure the box using Ethernet connection but now I want to move my current backups and it wants authentication but no box is available to provide my administrator name can anyone help ?

I purchased a 3TB Airport Time Capsule to use with my Mac running latest Maverics. After 8 hours been able to configure the box using Ethernet connection but now I want to move my current backups from my small driveand it wants authentication but no box is available to provide my administrator name can anyone help ?

I overcame the permissions by allowing both paths to have read and write access to anyone but that didnt solve it until I copied it into the DATA directory which I created on the Airport Time Capsule.
I had already discovered the TIME MACHINE How to transfer backups but I am struggling still with the item and cannot currently get it to work. My setup seems to have created a wireless link to my router which is what I wanted and in that set up there are three options. I have simply gone for the extension of my network. I ignored the other option there which I cannot remember something like DNS? That may be the problem becasuse when I remove the Ethernet connector it just doesnt go anywhere.
I have also found I cannot update my TIME MACHINE software (currently 1.3) as although Apple tell me I should be able to set backups hourly daily or weekly I have only ever been able to run it hourly when i would prefer longer intervals so thought an update might be necssary.
Also tried to get an update for my Airport Utility (Currently 6.3.2 but cannot find one even though I have read there might be one available and again this might be the problem.
Have reset the Time Capsule now about a dozen times.
Following the instructions and trying to copy my existing backup it suggests you need to copy it to the root directory but that is when I get some sort of security issue and I found I could only get it to accept if I dragged my .backupdb to the DATA directory on the Time Capsule. I dont even know if I do this it will work when I come to use it.
I therefore found your reply of no more help than i had discovered but I hope you return to read this note because I really do need some help.
I am intending starting again in the next couple of days and fully documenting what I do and what I see and then as I suspect it will be no different and I will then seek an appointment at the Apple Store in Trafford Centre and if that proves unsuccessful then I still have time to return and become a dissatisfied customer with Apple for the first time in a long experience with Apple. I have noticed frightening notes on the conversations which point to problems of Mavericks working with Airport Time Machine!! So in the end it might not be me doing anything wrong. Unfortunately you do feel left out in the dark sometimes that is why I hope you can respond with a solution?

  • Time machine backup too big for empty disk??

So I restart my MacBook Pro a few minutes after completing a full Time Machine backup.  When it restarts it goes through the grey startup screen, then gets stuck on the blue screen just  before the desktop normally appears. This happens whenever I startup. I am still able to hit the power button and get the Restart/Shut Down dialog, so I restart using my Snow Leopard boot disk, run Disk Utility, repair permissions, and repair disk, but the problem still remains. I decide to Restore from Time Machine Backup, so I erase my disk (80 GB, had only 200 MB free), go to the Restore screen and connect my backup disk. Now the weird part -- it says my latest backup is too big for the disk, even though i just erased everything, and 74.2 GB show as free. All my previous backups seem to fit fine, but apparently the last time Time Machine backed up more from my disk than can fit on my disk! It seems having a hard disk close to full is enough to render a backup effectively useless.  Guess I'll have to restore from a previous backup, then manually copy the newer files. Just wanted to alert others to this insane problem, so it doesn't happen to them.

That's likely corrupted your system. You should have a minimum of 10% - 15% free at all times. That's almost certainly why it wouldn't restart.
even though i just erased everything, and 74.2 GB show as free.
There must be something else on the drive; if you erase it, it should have just under 80 GB free. Is there another partition?
Did you erase with a Leopard Install disc or a Snow Leopard disc? If you used a Leopard disc, that might explain showing only 74.2 GB free (it counts differently).
If so, use your +Snow Leopard+ install disc to do a complete reformat, and try to restore the backup. A Leopard disc cannot restore a Snow Leopard backup. Even the Snow Leopard disc may not work, as it's just too full and/or your system was damaged by getting too full.

Having an OSX drive that full will make your Mac extremely sluggish, cause data corruption and/or loss, apps to crash, etc.

If you can get your Mac running, you need to make several GBs of space immediately.
If all else fails, reformat the internal HD and install OSX from your Snow Leopard Install disc, then use +Setup Assistant+ after the Welcome video to transfer +*most, but not all+* of your stuff from the backup. Omit the contents of one or more large sub-folders in a home folder (such as Photos, Music, or Movies).
See #19 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum), for details.

Why are some photos on camera roll but not in photo stream. Unable to backup as camera roll size is too big for free 5gb.

I assume you have Photostream on, correct?
In order for the photos to be moved into Photostream, you must exit the camera app, and be on a wifi connection.  Both of these criteria must be met before the sync occurs.

  • I have my iTunes library on an external HD because it is too big for my iMAC 500GB HD. I want to backup my external HD. Can I do this with any Apple cloud product or should I look elsewhere? Also is it worth just buying another external HD to back up

I have my iTunes library on an external HD because it is too big for my iMAC 500GB HD. However, it is not backed up, so I need a solution to backup my external HD. Can I do this with any Apple cloud product or should I look elsewhere for cloud products? Will it be cheaper/easier just to buy another external HD to back up my existing external HD? Thanks

I don't know if this is me adding files to iTunes when the external wasn't connected
    it is.
is it OK to just keep deleting that library on the Air?
    i wouldn't - at least not until i
    mount the external
point iTunes media folder location back to the external via preferences > advanced
consolidate my library via file > library > organize library
The ntfs hasn't seem to be causing any problems, but I've always wanted to know.
in order for your Mac to write to NTFS drives, it needs some help by installing e.g. the NTFS 3G driver. apparently that or something similar is installed on your Mac already. preferably, it would be formatted for Mac but then windows machines would need to have e.g. MacDrive installed to recognize the drive.

  • I have used Airport Time Capsule with my iMac for several years. I recently purchased a MacBook Air and when it tried to backup to Time Capsule it couldn't because Time Capsule is full. How can I now use the 3TB Airport Time Capsule to back up both?

I have used Airport Time Capsule with my iMac for a couple years. I recently purchased a MacBook Air and when it tried to backup to Time Capsule it couldn't because Time Capsule is full. How can I now use the 3TB Airport Time Capsule to back up both the iMac and MacBook Air? I don't mind losing earlier backups. I have excluded some items from backing up, but since the Airport Time Capsule is full, I can't even begin to back up the MacBook Air.

    On your Mac.......
Open Finder > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the Time Capsule icon, then click Edit in the smaller window that appears
Click on the Disks tab at the top of the window
    Click Erase Disk
On the next window that appears, select the Quick Erase option, then click Erase
The operation will only take a few minutes.
Now you are ready to start new backups of both Macs.  Back up one Mac first, then back up the other.  Do not try to back up both Macs as the same time.

  • Why does is say purchaseable items too big for download every time I try to download an app?

Every time I try to download a game or app my iPhone says error message purchasable items too big for download. I even changed my billon information. Anyone know what the problem might be?

Connect your iPad to iTunes on your Mac/PC and then go to your iPad's summary window. Then click back up if you want to back up your iPad first. After that click restore. Later it will ask you if you want to setup the iPad as a new iPad. Select the option to setup your iPad with your latest back up.

How to improve the speed for backing up files to time capsule via in hose wifi?

    via in hose wifi?
    Use a bigger hose??
    House??
Need to spell this out a bit more..
But speed via 2.4ghz to the TC is restricted by Apple to max 130mbps link speed.. much slower actual transfer.. latest TC and laptops can do 450mbps on 5ghz but you need to be up close.. so place the TC near the device using it.. and force 5ghz connection by using a different name for 5ghz network.

  • NB305 first time setup display too big for screen

I just bought an NB305-310 netbook  (two, actually, and the first one had no trouble). It came loaded with Windows XP.  When I turned it on I wasn't able to set it up right away, when I came back to it, I found the display of the welcome screens and the setup process assistant is too big for the screen, as if it thinks it has to fill a 15" or 17" screen instead of 10".  So I can't see to click on the "I agree" box or the "Next" button etc., so can't proceed through the setup.
I already tried restarting it a couple times (by holding down the power key, since Control-Alt-Delete didn't do anything).  I also tried using the function key with various keys that looked like they might affect display size but no change.  Even the volume function keys didn't change the volume of the setup background music that plays.
    How can I fix this?
    Thank you!

Try this. Press Alt + Spacebar to open the control menu (which may be off the screen) at the top-left of a window.
    Then press M (for Move).
That will enable you to move the window using the arrow keys.
When you get the chance, you'll want to go here and reset the screen resolution to 1024 x 600.

  • Kernel panic with wifi backup to Time Capsule

I have had no problem with wireless backup to Time Capsule until recently when I would consistently get a kernel panic during the backup. Is it a corrupt file? How would I isolate it? Or could it be a directory problem that DiskWarrior would fix? I can mount the backup image on my desktop OK.
I suppose I could erase my backup image on the Time Capsule, but I dont want to lose all that data. And if I did, what is the best way to archive that TIme Capsule backup image?
    Thanks for any help.

First, Repair your backups per #A5 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum.
If that doesn't help, here's a bunch of kernel panic info:
Apple Support - About kernel panic messages
Mac OS X Kernel Panic FAQ
The X Lab - Resolving Kernel Panics

If your backups are ok, erasing the drive probably won't help. But to "archive" the backups, see this Apple article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1281

Thinking of purchasing Time Capsule.... Can I access my documents saved on (Home Network) Time Capsule from another Network??? For instance, I can access my documents saved on MyBookLive (which is connected to my wifi) from ANY wifi connection... Like when I'm at school I can download documents stored on my MyBookLive at home.... I love this feature... But I would prefer to keep my products apple... So my question is can I access my documents from ANYWHERE with Time Capsule???
    Other products I have: MacBook (2009 limited edition it's aluminum) two iPad2 (2012) iPhone 5 (2012) two iphone4 iPod touch (2010) iPod Nano (2011)

Remote access to TC is allowed by BTMM and iCloud service.
Not for ipad or iphone.. only the Macbook although I think people have some work arounds..
NOTE. Your school firewall should block it. If I was still working in network admin I would. ie you are risking the whole network to get access to files unchecked for viruses.. and please don't just say Macs don't get viruses, you can still be the source of the infection even if you don't suffer the disease. Just a carrier.

Can I use Time Capsule ONLY as a WiFi backup disk w/out having to configure it as my main router with my Internet modem?
Yes, you have two options here, each with advantages and disadvantages.
Option 1...connect the Time Capsule to your AirPort Extreme using an Ethernet cable connection. Turn off the wireless on the Time Capsule since your AirPort Extreme is already providing wireless.
Advantages...easy to configure, you can backup either over wireless or plug directly into one of the Ethernet ports to backup large files 3-5 times faster than wireless.
Disadvantages...none, except it requires a wired Ethernet connection to the AirPort Extreme.
Option 2....configure the Time Capsule as a wireless only hard drive.
Advantage.....you can locate the Time Capsule anywhere you want as long as it can receive a good wireless signal from the AirPort Extreme.
Disadvantages....harder to configure, backups will occur only over wireless.

  • Time Capsule too slow with PLC

    Hello.
Currently I have a wifi modem router (802.11g) Zyxel whose ports ethernet (10/100) have connected the following:
    - Port 1 mac pro
    - Port 2 NAS 2TB Raid 5 where have all the movies in HD (720p and 1080p), home videos, music, photos, etc..
    - Port 3 PLC adapter Devolo dlan 200 AV http://www.devolo.com/consumer/7dlan-200-aveasy_starter-kit_product-presentation1.html?l=en
All this is in my home office.
In the bedroom of my oldest son, I have a PLC adapter which connects your PC and / or console. Also use a macbook by wifi.
In the room of my youngest son, another PLC adapter which connects your MacMini and / or console.
In the lounge have another PLC adapter that is connected to a multimedia disc DVICO TVIX M6500 http://www.tvix.co.kr/ENG/products/HDM6500.aspx
This disc I have configured to connect to the NAS and can see all the content (especially HD movies) smoothly cuts or breaks in the image and sound.
Now I buy a Time Capsule 1TB. Following instructions, I connected a Zyxel modem port to the WAN input of TC (I canceled the Zyxel wifi).
I connected to port 1 of the TC the mac pro, the NAS to port 2 and to port 3 the PLC adapter, but I have a problem set transfer rate:
From the lounge, when I connect the disk media and I want to watch any movie (even in PAL) to play me jumping on the image and sound. It is as if the ports were only a 10mb ethernet. They lack the data transfer rate (I tested on all three)
Interestingly, the TC wifi (802.11n) works properly and the macbook can see all the movies in HD without problems of jumps in the image (which with Zyxel wifi was impossible)
I've been looking in all possible configurations and find nothing.
The network works because I see all the computers, but is very slow.
Theoretically, the PLC adapter is transparent in an ethernet network and does not influence the rate of data transfer.
It is as if they were incompatible the TC Gigabit ports with the PLC adapter.
    Any idea?
    Greetings

Yes, that's what I meant, sorry.
and my internet connection is unstable reqularly disconnecting...
That may be the main problem.  Time Machine may be just an innocent victim.
A easy way to tell is to just disconnect from the Internet for a while, and see if the backups improve, via Ethernet.  If not, be sure it's not still using WIFI -- turn WIFI off to force it to use Ethernet.
If it does improve, that would implicate something in your setup or connection to your DSL modem.  That's out of my area of expertise, but there are some networking gurus here who can help.
If it doesn't improve greatly, see the green box in #D2 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting.  Something there should fix it.

  • Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to "Time Capsule. The backup disk image /Volumes/Data/MacBook Pro.sparsebundle could not be created (error 60)"

We are Mountain Lion using Time Machine to backup to Time Capsule. When the backup tries to run, an error appears after a couple of minutes saying "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer." Then an error shows up saying "Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to "Time Capsule. The backup disk image /Volumes/Data/MacBook Pro.sparsebundle could not be created (error 60)"
I low level reformatted the Time Capsule and that didn't fix it. I then tried using Time Machine on another computer to back up to that same Time Capsule and it worked- so I'm doubting it's the Time Capsule.
I've noticed that when Time Machine runs, that a  folder called Data  at /Volumes/ appears while Time Machine is trying to back up. I think it's making the sparsebundle to transfer to the Time Capsule.
However, after a couple of minutes- it comes back saying that the disk is unreadable.
I think it's something wrong with either creating the sparsebundle or opening the disk image that seems to be a part of the Time Machine backup process on the local drive.
I am able to create a disk image with Disk Utilitiy without any problem on that system. I've repaired the disk and disk permissions with Disk Utility and replaced the directory with Disk Warrior. I've trashed what preference files I could find and restarted. I've completely removed the backup destination from the computer and added it back again.
    Help!
    Thanks,
    Neil

Yes, exactly.  It makes one sparse bundle per Mac.
It's possible the TC's disk is too full for a new sparse bundle, or there may be some other problem.
Via the Finder, locate the existing sparse bundle (see the pink box in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #17 if you're not sure how to do that).  See how large it is (plus how large anything else that may be there).  If the total is very near the size of the TC, that may be the problem.
If not, a clue may be lurking in your logs.  Use the widget in #A1 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting to display the backup messages from your logs.  Locate the backup in question (probably the first one displayed), then copy and post all the messages here.
