Backup to Time Machine via VPN?

My TM is on the network in the office.
I can VPN in, and ping the IP of the TM.
When I try to back up it can't find the drive.
What do I need to setup so that I can back up when I am out of the office?
Thanks,
Steve...

When I log into the VPN I can use "Connect to Server" with the TC's IP and it will mount.
When I launch TM, it says "preparing for backup", but never gets any further.
If I go to the terminal screen I can ping the TM using the IP address.

  • Backup w/ Time Machine via Target Disk Mode?

So here's my situation, my computer is stuck on the grey screen of death, but it mounts fine in Target Disk Mode. Its been about 2 weeks since my last Time Machine backup, so I would like to recover the last two weeks of files. If I can do that, then I'll just wipe the HD and start with a fresh install, however, since I can't get it to start up, is it possible to backup my computer to my Time Machine backup using Target Disk Mode through my wife's computer? Any help is appreciated.
(If not, then is it possible to run a time machine backup from single user mode?)
Here's basically what I'm talking about:
MBP (Target Disk Mode) > Wife's MacBook > External HD (Time Machine Backup)

That may work, but you'll get a whole new, full backup, identified as belonging to the MacBook (since that's where TM would run, and the MBP would look like an external HD.)  Unless you exclude it, you'd also get the internal HD on the MacBook. So it will require a lot of space and time.
There's no way to fool it into making an incremental backup.
Or, use the same setup, but make a "clone" on a separate HD or partition, via the Restore tab of DIsk Utility, or one of the "cloning" apps: CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper.

  • Multiple iPhone backups in Time Machine

I have my wife's iPhone and she was charging it on our Mac via cable. Our iTunes is instructed not to sync automatically. We have two phones in iTunes. Child comes along and somehow resets or wipes phone: not sure which one.
My question is, if I were to enter into Time Machine is it possible to discern which backup is for which phone? The phone is not synced often and I'm guessing the last one was in September, if she even synced at all during that month .
I'm on os x10.8 which was a recent upgrade. Our previous version residing on Time Machine is SL. I have been told to be careful on the restore just in case we need to resort to other (cough) measures in order to (cough) the data.
    Thanx

Yes, sort of.  You can delete indiividual backups, or all backups of selected items, via Time Machine.  See #12 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  You can only select one backup at a time, but they're deleted in a separate process, so you can select another before the first one completes.  When you exit from Time Machine, you may see one or more progress bars for the individual deletions.  (As noted there, never delete anything from your backups via the Finder.)
But you really shouldn't have to do that.  Time Machine will delete your oldest backups automatically, when it needs room for new ones.

  • Can't back up MBA on Time Capsule using Time Machine Via Wifi

    Hi,
I can't back up MBA on time capsule using Time Machine via wifi.  I bought the time capsule new Dec 2014.  I was able to backup for the 1st 3 days.  In less than a week time, a message came up every time I tried to back up: "Time Machine couldn’t complete the backup to AirPort Time Capsule. The backup disk could not be found. Make sure the backup disk is connected or select a different backup disk".  So, there's been no backup at all for almost 3 weeks.  Wifi connectivity under Airport Utility is fine.  Green light on the time capsule is on etc.
Please kindly advice what is going on with this time capsule wifi backup.  Do I have to connect the time capsule with MBA with a physical cable to perform this job?
    Many thanks in advance,

  • Backup with Time Machine for 6 iMacs

I want to to use an external drive to backup with Time Machine my 6 iMac's. I know that Time Capsule is good for this kind of stuff but I would prefer to be able to plug my Storage Device with an Ethernet cable. And Time Capsule is offering 2 or 3 TB, I would need minimum 5 TB. Any idea what should I buy and what is good for that purpose?
    Thanks a lot

Time Capsule has 3 Eth ports so only 3 iMacs via cable.
You can do it with two 3TB Time Capsules if you wish.
With 6 iMacs you may need to think about small business solution.
On Mac networks we use Gigabit switches and NAS drives such as Buffalo TeraStation III 8TB on RAID5.
Those support Apple Time Machine, have dual Gigabit Eth port which can be trunked with manageable switches and all works very well and fast.
There are many scenarios you may want to consider.
Let me know if you have any questions regarding the above setup.

  • Backup to Time Machine failed due to large iMovie Library

    Hi All
    I have had issues backing up to Time Machine since upgrading to OS Mavericks and iMovie 10, the likely culprit is my large iMovie library.  I have deleted my previous iMovie events, so only have the 1 iMovie library file related to the current version of iMovie.  I have the following situation;
    - iMac HDD - 1 TB with 0.5 TB free
    - External HDD - 2 TB with 0.5 TB free (used for iMovie library which is 1.5 TB)
    - External HDD - 3 TB with 1.0 TB free (used for Time Machine backup)
Now I have just imported some additional video into my iMovie library.  When I try to do a backup I get the error "Backup Failed, Time Machine couldn't back up to "Time Machine"."  Then further details suggest "The backup disk needs 1.55 TB for the backup but only 982.04 GB are available. Select a larger backup disk or make the backup smaller by excluding files."  This seems to suggest that Time Machine wants to backup my entire iMovie library (ie, 1.55 TB)
Two questions; does Time Machine backup the entire iMovie Library each time there is a change rather than just the incremental imported files?, and how can I get my backup to work again?

  • OS X Restore with Time Machine via LAN does not work

    Hi all,
i did a full backup of my mac mini with mountain lion on a time capsule via LAN. Tried to do a full restore on a new hard disk and connect to the time capsule after i booted into a restore environment. I was able to choose the time capsule as the restore source and connected using my dedicated backup user, which was also used to create the backup before. But after i cannot chose my just created backup!
Using a local USB disk with time machine everythings workes fine. But the main reason why i chosed time capsule is, that i can make my backups of all the used mac books and minis  via LAN / WLAN...
So, is there anybody else experiancing this Problem?

tested OS X Restore with Time Machine via QNAP NAS Box - working without any problem. So with the Time Capsule it might be firmware problem?!

  • Deleting Backups from Time Machine to Make Room

Deleting Backups from Time Machine to Make Room
So, I went into my 1.5 terabyte back-up drive and deleted a number of the TM backups because the drive was getting too full. (I also use that drive to store “permanent” photo files in other folders.)
Evidently, the computer does not recognize the deletions because the drive shows the same miniscule amount of space as it did prior to the deletions.
I know people have talked about using “actions” button in the gear icon. However, I can’t find that.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.
    Tek

    Thanks for the reply, V.K.
    Unfortunately, I deleted via the finder and then emptied the trash. :-}
I know now, (after the fact) that this was the wrong thing to do. However, I didn’t find a “delete” option within TM.
It all seemed “logical” at the time. . . and quite frankly, still does. Why the heck is TM so difficult to control? Why can’t one just set it for X number of backups and have an easy to access delete button? (grumble, grumble)
I looked at the FAQs, but am still not clear on how to find the “action” button. I am using a laptop with no “right click” feature. The mouse is a one piece model.
My backup drive is directly attached, but, only when I want to backup since I work on a MB pro laptop.
    So please:
    How do I correct this?
Do I need to format the backup drive and partition? I don’t want/need so many backups cluttering my drive. I need space for permanent photo archives which are very large. These are now merely in a separate folder on the backup drive.

  • ISight & Backup or Time Machine

I can't get either Backup or Time Machine to work when my iSight camera is connected via firewire. My external storage drive is also a firewire 400 connection. (iMac G5) Everything works fine when I disconnect the camera. Is there a work around or will I always have to disconnect my iSight camera each time I want to backup??

    Hello Michael
Possible hardware or software conflicts with External iSight are not uncommon.
If the suggestions in the link above do not help you, and if you must leave your external iSight connected while doing backups or restores, the simplest solution I can suggest is to use a USB 2.0 drive for your external storage device.

  • Time Machine via Airdrop

Is it possible to back up Macbook to Mac mini with Time Machine via Airdrop?

    Yes there is.
    Read this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=5687498#5687498
Toward the bottom there is a write up of how to setup time machine over a network. For you the only difference is that you would using wireless to connect instead of wired by Ethernet. For the first backup, you may want to connect by Ethernet just to speed things up.

  • I bought a new external hard drive for backups, but time machine won't do a full back up.  I think it is remembering backing up onto previous external hard drives, which I don't own anymore.  How do I do a new full backup?

I bought a new external hard drive for backups, but time machine won't do a full back up.
I think it is remembering backing up onto previous external hard drives, which I don't own anymore.  How do I do a new full backup?
When I bought the new (used) iMac, I also bought an external hard drive for backups.  It worked fine, but my husband stole it.
Then I bought a new external hard drive (Seagate) and it worked fine for three weeks, then died.
So I just got a new external hard drive, which was put together from an internal hard drive and a hard drive enclosure.
Time machine did the first backup today, and it should have taken 9 hours like it did on the previous first time full back up.  Instead, it took 30 minutes.  That can't be right.  I want to start over and do a full backup to make sure everything gets onto my new external hard drive, but I can't figure out how to do that.  Please help.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it:
    tmutil compare -E
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command will take at least a few minutes to run. Eventually some lines of output will appear below what you entered.
Each line that begins with a plus sign (“+”) represents a file that has been added to the source volume since the last snapshot was taken. These files have not been backed up yet.
Each line that begins with an exclamation point (“!”) represents a file that has changed on the source volume. These files have been backed up, but not in their present state.
Each line that begins with a minus sign (“-“) represents a file that has been removed from the source volume.
At the end of the output, you’ll get some lines like the following:
    Added:
    Removed:
    Changed:
These lines show the total amount of data added, removed, or changed on the source(s) since the last snapshot.

    Hi there,
I found that Time Machine in Mavericks will sort it all out for you. You shouldn't need to buy another backup drive, unless you have insufficient space left and can't afford to delete whats on there. It should just work fine.
