Backup to Timecapsule

I want to use backup 3 to backup to my Timecapsule only I don't see it mounted or as an option in the drive window. What am I doing wrong?

I have sucessfully backed up a pc to TC. We have a wireless network created with the TC using a desktop pc, my macbook and my wife's pc. I had just started my first backup from my macbook and we wanted to also do the pc.
On her PC (windows XP OS) she did the following:
go to start
select programs
select accessories
select system tools
select backup
run it through the wizard for simplest set up
tell it to run a backup, select next
tell it what files you want to back up, select next
from the 'browse' button select your TC to back-up to
add a name for the file so you can identify on the TC later, select next
that's about it. This is a manual, not an automatic... but if you'll set yourself a weekly reminder, you'll save yourself a lot of heartache when you crash and realize you've got recent files to retore.
hope this helps!

  • Backup to TImeCapsule including Boot Camp partition

I used Boot Camp to install Windows 7 Professional on my new MacBook Air, and have now got Parallels Desktop 6 for Mac working OK with a Windows Virtual Machine. But I am reluctant to remove the Boot Camp partition. Now I have got TIme Capsule/Time Machine working OK for automatic backups - but the BootCamp/Windows stuff is not being backed up. Can anyone tell me how to include the Boot Camp partition and all my Windows-based work in the automatic backup 'of the entire machine' (the reason I bought a Time Capsule) to Time Capsule? It seems that only the MAC side of the machine is being backed up hourly by Time Machine. Can't find anything in Knowledge Base or Help about this. Thanks!

I'm suggesting you go there to find an app that will backup your BootCamp partition to a Time Capsule. I don't know if WinClone can do that, or if there are better options.
If I can partition my Mac using Boot Camp, is it possible to partition the Time Capsule
No. But you can create a +disk image+ on it, and back up the Windoze side to it, if you can find an app that will work. Maybe a Genius in my local retail Apple store can help?
Possible. But they generally don't seem to have much training on Time Machine or Time Capsules.
Info on the whole question of backup & data protection is fairly thin in the Apple world - or am I looking in tihe wrong place or calling it the wrong thing? thanks

  • Backups to TimeCapsule getting slower and slower: possible Spotlight issue?

When I first got my TimeCapsule the incremental backups ran in a few minutes. Now they're taking over an hour, even when there's only a couple of MB to back up. While they're running I often notice that if I pop open the Spotlight search box there's a progress indicator at the bottom under the label "Indexing Backup of Simon" (Backup of Simon being the volume that Time Machine backs up to).
Anyone else seeing this? Any way to cure it? My Time Capsule's turned from being a lifesaver to a nuisance in a matter of weeks.

I have exactly the same problem. Spotlight has been indexing the time capsule for three days and still says that 82 hours remaining!
    a) Should spotlight index the time capsule?
( it seems that spotlight is indexing a network
drive "Backup of [my computer name]" )
    b) If so, should it take so much time?

  • Every other time machine backup to timecapsule is too large

    Hello,
I have a strange thing going on here. I am running 10.8.2 on a MBP early 2011. I backup with time machine to my timecapsule via WiFi and to an external drive connected to USB. Both backups are encrypted.
Everything worked great for a year. A couple of weeks ago I had to reset my MBP from a backup. Worked fine as well. After that time mashine did a new complete backup.
Since then, sometimes my incremental backups get as large as 37GB even though not much has changed. I have excluded my downloadfolder and also my Virtual machine (Windows XP via parallels). The backup begins and is being calculated to be lets say 3MB large but during the backup the size grows up to 37GB.
This happens maybe once a day. Eight backups or so just work as always and then all of a sudden 37GB again. And the funny thing, this does NOT happen at all backing up to the external HD, ONLY when backing up to my timecapsule.
What I have tried so far:
    - I reset my timecapsule i.e. I deletd all backups and did a fresh complete backup
    - I reset timemachine as described here    http://pondini.org/TM/A4.html
This did not help. I found out comparing the backups that when it comes to a 37GB backup the following folders are backed up to an great extend if not completely:
    - Machintosh HD / System, Library and Applications
This is really frustrating as it takes so long for large backups...

OK, it looks like it IS supported to have a Time Machine backup to an external drive hanging off a Time Capsule:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2038?viewlocale=en_US
"...but you cannot choose AirPort Extreme's AirPort Disk as a Time Machine backup volume.
However, you can choose Time Capsule AirPort Disks or internal disks as a Time Machine backup volume."

  • How to backup my timecapsule ?

I want to make a backup of my timecapsule.
I've found old articles but no actual tips how to do this.
    THANKS!

The old archive method requires the old version of airport utility but it is in fact the best way.. because it requires no network traffic and once started can be left without using computer either.
So simply download and install a real utility and give up the toy.
But you can of course just copy the files from the TC to anywhere else.. just copy and paste the sparsebundles.
    Pondini has some info.
    http://pondini.org/TM/18.html
How to load 5.6 into ML.
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. it is very simple.. drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. drill down.. applications utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall 6.1 (now 6.2 if you updated) so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. so just ignore the toyland version.. the plastic hammer.. and start using 5.6.. a real tool.

Got New Macbook Pro and a Time Capsule. Everything works good. Can't figure out how to get my sweethearts Macbook Pro to be able to backup to the Time Capsule. It sees the Time Capsule and accesses the internet through it but can't get the backups to go. Not even seeing the beginning steps.

  • Intermittent backups with TimeCapsule after upgrading to 10.7.2 from 10.6.x

I upgraded to 10.7.2 from the latest version of 10.6.x yesterday.  I'm still getting the bugs out.
One of the bugs is that my TimeCapsule seems to back up successfully only intermittently.  I've gotten some error messages which say something about not being able to access the drive (I don't recall the exact text of the error message right now).  After trying to select the TimeCapsule a few times with no luck I gave up.
When I came back to it a few hours later it seemed to have worked.  Thus the "intermittently successful" part.
Anyone else having problems like this?
    Thanks.

Yes, it is common problem.. Lion and latest TC firmware not a great combo.. go back to 7.5.2 and it is much reduced.

  • Time Capsule can't complete backup

I have been using a Time Capsule to hold files for multiple computers in my office to access. The Time Capsule randomly one day stopped backing up and I am now getting this error: "Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to "TimeCapsule". The backup disk image "/Volumes/Data/MyMac.sparsebundle" could not be created (error (null))."
I have tried the tutorials on http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html (renaming everything like it says for this error, deleting the .plist file, etc) but nothing has fixed my problem.
I am also having a strange issue where files that were created and saved to the Time Capsule while backups haven't been working (Since the end of August supposedly) will flicker in their folder and appear as a blank paper icon. They were working yesterday perfectly fine, but now it tells me "Application cannot be found" if I am quick enough to click on them before they disappear again.

Ok.. this is where you need to make a decision.. do you wipe and start over.. or do you try just a delete of the old backup and see if the Mac and start over doing a backup.
This is not an unusual problem.. So let me just run through the list to make sure you have everything as right as possible.. if none of it works you really have no choice but to wipe and start over.
    1. Factory reset the TC and do the setup again. (sorry if you have already done this.. but it is standard procedure when the thing corrupts itself).
No files are lost doing this. BUT Apple now says you should use names, less than 27 characters, no spaces. Pondini is more explicit.. 25 characters no spaces pure alphanumeric. I will be even more specific.. since Mavericks is using SMB networking by default. Use names that are really short.. max 20 characters.. less than 10 even better. So TCgenx as base station name. X being actual Gen of the TC.. wireless name, TCwifi. Keep the wireless password to 10-20 character pure alphanumeric mix of case and numbers.
    2. IPv6 is now essential and should be set to link-local only in the computer.. whether wireless or ethernet set both if used to that setting.. eg wireless.
    3. Manually mount the TC in the computer using Finder, Go/Connect to Server.
AFP://TCgenx.local (replace with the name you used.. local is default domain you cannot really change so it should be correct).
    or
AFP://10.0.1.1 (If the TC is setup as router or with static IP.. which is always better btw, even if the TC is bridged, then use IP address.. it fixes the name problem).
The disk will be discovered and you will be asked for the disk password.. apply that and don't forget to save in the keychain.
    4. Redo the setup of the TM.. using the new TC name as the target. Don't worry if it says it is going to create a new backup, once it starts and finds the backup it will do a normal incremental.
    5. No luck with the above.. do a verify of the backup (A5 in Pondini troubleshooting).
    6. Still no luck.. wipe the backup for your computer and start over with a new backup.
    Q12 here http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
But if you are backing up several computers make sure you delete the right sparsebundle.
When you do a clean fresh backup .. use ethernet.. wireless off.. this ensures the first backup at least is as good as possible. Wireless is dodgy.
None of this will totally guarantee success.. but it has good chance.. if it fails.. as with Mavericks TM is not wholly reliable. I recommend you buy Carbon Copy Cloner.. and USB drive and plug it into your computer and make a bootable clone. Once you have seen bootable clones in operation.. ie the internal disk dies.. plug in the USB and select it as boot drive.. and you are back to whenever the backup was done.. you will consider TM great for incremental backups and stick to clones for getting operational again.

  • How retrieve Time Machine purple backups?

How retrieve Time Machine backups older than now? Am using Lion (10.7.2). In Time Machine, all my backups that are older than 'Now' have purple date/time stamps and bars, and no 'populated' finder-like window to enable access to my older-than-now backups. My TM backups are on a Drobo S.

    Kadege wrote:
Hello Pondini, I've got the same problem, nearly all dates are purple, older than some days. This moves with the time, some days ago, 25-Dec was available, today it isn't (but 26-Dec is).
Do you mean the Dec 25 backup is no longer shown in the TimeLine at all?  If so, either it's been deleted, or your backups are corrupt.  If you didn't delete it, try to repair your backups, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
Or, if you mean the Dec 25 backup is there, but is faded-out and you can't select it, that's because whatever's in your Finder window before you Enter Time Machine wasn't included in that particular backup -- select something else before entering Time Machine, or in the Finder sidebar once you're there.  See #15A in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions for details, especially the pink box there.
When accessing the Backup on TimeCapsule via Finder directly, I can see the volume (500 GB) has left 19,37 GB free.  I can see, too, all the backups, which are purple in Timemachine, exist (beginnin in July 2011 when I bought the computer).
Yes, eventually, Time Machine will fill all the empty space available to it.  Before that, it will periodically "thin" your backups, per the schedule on the Time Machine Preferences window -- all but the first of the day are deleted after 24 hours; those are kept for a month, then reduced to one per week.
Once the drive gets near full, it will start deleting the oldest backup(s) to make room for new ones.  Since you have your first backups, that hasn't started yet, but probably will before long.
including system-sofware and applications, which I don't backup by Timemachine.
That's usually not a good idea.  It saves relatively little space (perhaps 10-20 GB), and no time (after the first backup), but it means you can't do a full system restore from those backups, or use them with either Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant to set up a new Mac, or to transfer your stuff if you have to erase or replace your internal HD.  Once you get this sorted out, I'd strongly recommend removing those exclusions.

  • Timecapsule cannot connect to the server

I'm trying to backup with timecapsule; I do this manually to avoid slowing the computer during every-hour back-ups. But now when I try to turn Time Machine on, I get prompted to select a backup disk; I select timemachine (the airport) and then get a message that "there was an error connecting to the server" etc. The thing is… this same device is our airport, so communication should work! I have reset the timecapsule but this doesn't work. And now… ehem: I need to back-up!!

This is a standard issue with Mountain Lion and the TC.
    Reboot the TC..
If that is not enough reboot the whole network in correct order.. modem.. router.. TC. 2min between them.. and then the TC.
Actually hourly backups happen very quickly.. and TM overall works better..

  • TimeCapsule Archive problem

    Hi,
I purchased a new 2TB HD to backup my Timecapsule.
I did format as FAT (it was NTFS) and plugged on the TimeCapsule USB.
Then, I opened the Airport Utility on my mac and clicked Archive.
The system replied that archive started but after few minutes I found it had finished.
Looking into the USB disk I found that it just created some new folders but nothing was copied.
I repeated the operation twice and also tried lo launch the archive from the iPAD Airport App.
The results is always the same. Archive starts and the finish in few minutes.
Is there anyone that knows what is the problem and how to solve it, please?
Is there a way to store a sort of log of actions and return code of what has happened?
(so that in the future I check that the full time capsule has been copied/cloned).
    Thanks
    Giuseppe

You need the disk formatted Mac OS.. HFS+.. FAT32 is readable but the file structure of the TC cannot be archived to a disk formatted FAT32.
Put the disk on a Mac and simply change it to GUID partition and Mac OS extended Journaled.

  • Is this setup possible?

I have about 1.5 terrabytes of music and home movies. I want to be able to store on iTunes but i dont want it on the hard drive, is it possible to keep it on my time capsule/network drive, have it in itunes and maybe even have it backup to timecapsule/network hard drive for safe keeping. if so can someone explain.

If the drive is configured as a network drive, then Time Machine will not be able to back up the data on the drive.
Connect the drive directly to your Mac, as Niel recommends, so that Time Machine will backup both your Mac and the attached hard drive.

  • Permissions break as soon as they're fixed...

    Ladies & Gentlemen,
After years of nearly trouble-free operation of my MB, I'm getting all sorts of latency, and, more worrying, occasional "you must restart your computer" messages. I don't know if they're related, but it seems that I've developed some weird permissions problems, too.
First, when I run repair permissions, it does seem to help the latency and reduce application crashes... for a short period.
When I run 'repair permissions', I'm getting lots of permissions and user setting errors in the /Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/ directories. Disk Utility seems to fix them all, except that  /RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAgent is almost always identified as "has been modified and will not be repaired"
If I re-run 'repair permissions' immediately after it's completed, I get almost identical results, telling me that all of the /JavaVM.framework/ user and permission problems (that were presumably fixed 60 seconds prior) are wrong again.
Thinking I might have problems with my (newly replaced) hard drive, I've run 'repair disk' several times and the main partition gets a clean bill of health, each time.
I don't know which of these things have anything to do with the others, but clearly my system is not running very smoothly.
Since this doesn't appear to be a hardware problem (at least, not the HD), I'm wondering about some corruption of the OS, but that's wild speculation on my part.
Any suggestions on how to diagnose / fix this problem?

I am now 48-hours post re-replaced hard drive, and things seem to be working very smoothly.
Given the reliability of contemporary drives, I might have been playing the odds about my problem not being a result of a faulty device, but odds don't tell the whole story.
In the past couple days, no weird latency (other than the self-generated type because I insist on having Photoshop, Word, Excel, Mail, Firefox, Keynote, and Dreamweaver all open at the same time), no application lock-ups, no "you need to reboot" messages... Ahhh, the boring life of a well-behaved computer.
The lessons learned from this little episode:
First and foremost, thank God for backups! TimeCapsule and TimeMachine saved my butt three times this past week, turning what would otherwise be protracted downtime and shop-repair into self-manageable fixes.
Trust people with more troubleshooting experience. I'd been mucking about with fixes, command-line attempts to purge a corrupted journal, hoop-jumping to try and re-mount a drive that was destined to fail again. Literally 2 minutes into my description of the problem to the guy at the Genius bar, he told me what the problem most likely was. It took me another 12 hours of (pointless) messing with it to believe him.
Apple stores rock! Apart from the fact that they're the only tech support who don't presume that you're a complete and total moron "have you checked to make sure it's turned on?", they carefully listen to your description of the problem, seek out any weak spots in your diagnosis, then jump to the appropriate corrective steps. I've never felt as though they're starting me at 'page 1' of the troubleshooting manual, to dutifully go through the next 17 steps to arrive at what I said the problem was when I made the appointment. Their staff rocks.
Thank you, Chip, for helping to point me in the right direction so that I wasn't spinning my wheels, trying to solve problems that didn't really exist.

  • Mac OS X Server 10.5.2 and Time Capsule - Auto-portmapping Issues

    Hi,
So I recently installed Mac OS X Server 10.5.2 onto my Mac mini media center. During the "Standard Server" Setup Assistant, it detected my Time Capsule and asked for the TC's password to setup automatic portmapping. After getting things up and running, OS X Server apparently sends a refresh of the ports every hour to the TC, which also reboots it. Needless to say, this has caused huge issues in getting the first backup from all my Macs completed.
I disabled the auto-portmapping by changing my TC's setup password. Now, OS X Server is hitting the TC with a auto-portmap request every MINUTE. This is rather annoying as it's essentially spamming my logs on both OS X Server and the TC. Anyone know how to turn this feature of OS X Server off?

I can relate to this thread.
    Setup:
I have a Macmini running OS 10.5.2 server and a TimeCapsule router connected to cable modem.
I have two other machines that backup onto TimeCapsule via TimeMachine.
    Problem:
My Macmini server backs-up with TimeMachine locally via USB drive, not to TimeCapsule... Yet I have the same problem. Which is: everytime the server runs TimeMachine, TimeCapsule router disconnects from the internet as the macmini "prepares" the directly connected USB drive. (orange light on front implies that it completely resets itself) It reconnects for the duration of the backup, then resets the router again during the "Preparing..." phase of backup.
I believe the diagnosis implied by the original tread title is incorrect due to the fact that I have seen the same problem with port mapping completely disabled on the TimeCapsule router.
Something else is going on when TimeCapsule goes through "Preparing..." that is the cause of the problem
