Backup tool

can someone tell me very good freeware backup utility/tool for my oracle database? also (if possible) provide me link or url for that tool.
i need that for RHEL4 and Oracle ver is 9i.
i'll really appretiate your help.

Is the iCloud a backup tool for your computer? ---- Apple care suggested using iCloud for a backup to my documents. I do not have an iphone, ipad or laptop. Just an iMac. Nothing to share the data with.
Now I am unable to access some of my documents on my computer and saving documents is cumbersome because it always wants to save it in iCloud, not my computer. The documents I am unable to open are my old MS-Word. One is a macro enabled word doc. I am using os x mountain lion.
After over an hour chat with apple care, the issue is not resolved. I did not have more time to resolve the issue today and it will be continued next week. Per apple care, I do not have any documents in the iCloud however I am almost at the free capacity with contacts and documents.
My question is -- If I purchase backup from a clould provider - other than apple, back up my files in documents in their cloud (make sure I can open them) and then delete the link to iCloud. Would I preserve my data? Has anyone tried this? I am open to suggestions.

Not really. You can store "Documents in the Cloud" but this applies only to documents created by Pages, Numbers, Preview, Keynote, and Microsoft Office documents created on your computer stored in iCloud's "iWork". Within that limited purpose, iCloud works very well.

I'm not quite sure I understand what you mean by "purchase backup from a cloud provider" but if you're considering a service such as Carbonite, I don't advocate any of them. To back up your Mac, use your own backup device - Time Capsule or an external hard disk. It's inexpensive and reliable: two elements essential for a backup strategy, that no subscription service can offer.

Time Capsule and Windows 7 backup tool

So I own a TC that works excellent with my Mac Books. Now that I have my Mac's all backed up with TC I want to cover myself on my W7 machine. After doing some reading I found that W7 has a backup tool thank can backup to an external drive or network drive. I attached a drive to my TC and want to backup my W7 system to that. There seems to be some setting involved so before I start messing around has anyone done this yet and can confirm it works well? The last thing I want to do is mess with backups.

doesnt work for me, its a real dealbreaker.
I've tried manually adding and editing the lmcompatability registry key, mapping via explorer, mapping via net use, browsing via unc, tried with airport config software and without, mapped via IP and mapped via hostname.
The thing is just flakey and doesnt work.
I've tried firmware 7.4, 7.41 and 7.42. As you say, 7.3 is no-go with a dualband.
The problem for me isn't mapping the drive, but using it once it's mapped. files and folders fail to copy, stuff doesn't always delete, drive sometimes becomes unavailable. The TC is solid otherwise.
There has to be another registry setting to change somewhere though hopefully. Either that or they've tightened the security within win7 to the point of no return for some legacy stuff.

Oracle 8 backup tools in Oracle 8i?

I already posted a thread about that, but I still have no answer...
Is it possible to use the backup tools of Oracle 8 in Oracle 8i? instead of using RMAN (which is not very nice to use).
I'd like to write a backup script with a visual tool, and if i have to use rman to execute it after, i don't mind.
But are there any visual tools, or can i use those of Oracle 8?

I have not any experience in RMAN. I think, u can use oracle utilities export and imports. It helps u to take backup as well as restore.
If u want to use in any projects, U can customise it.

Backup Tools in Oracle 8i

Are there other backup tools for Oracle 8i than Legato or RMAN?
And, are the backup tools of Oracle 8 available for Oracle 8i? Or are they usable with Oracle 8i?

Legato is not a great utility for backups...
And using RMAN without graphical environment is not really funny...
For Oracle 8 tools in Oracle 8i, I don't know...

Oracle Third Party Backup tools

What are some third party backup programs that people are using with oracle these days? Also when using third party backup tools, do these tools shutdown the database while backing up? Does the Archive Log mode need to be enable as well? Not big on Oracle so simple answers would work.

Backup tool for ASA config?

We are using Solarwinds Kiwi backup tool to backup our ASA configs, however it has hit a bug which they are looking into as it only backs up half of the config. While they search for a fix does anyone know of another free tool I can use to schedule backups of our ASA?

I'm getting this database connection error only when trying to run cold backup on infrastructure. I have ORACLE_HOME, SID specified OK - I can tnsping the listener and I can sqlplus connect to the database.
It looks like RMAN is barfing on the first line of the script:-
shutdown immediate;
startup mount ;
configure controlfile autobackup on;
because it is quite happy executing other RMAN commads such as :-
configure controlfile autobackup on;
configure controlfile autobackup format for device type disk to
..when not doing cold backups..
The error is:-

Got the answer, thanks for the replies. The system manager had been told to shut down the DB prior to running the perl script! Hence, the error.
What's the feeling about shuttting down the listener prior to running the backup tool in cold backup mode? I can't see it mentioned in the 9.0.4 doc but I could be wrong. I would think the listener would reestablish connection to the db once RMAN brings it back up but it seems that if it is not using tnsnames to connect, we could bring down the listener prior to running the backup tool?

Migration Assistant as backup tool to external HD

I was told that Migration Asst (MA) can be used to back up my mac and the data could be sent to an external HD (mine is 3rd party, using firewire). I finally launched MA tonight to do it, but it doesn't look possible.
1) If it can be done, please direct me!
2) If not, any suggestions for open source S/W that painlessly backs up my documents, e-mail, bookmarks, and other crucial stuff.
Ultimately I am looking for a b/u solution that does not involve heavy "picking and choosing" of what's important.

1. The Migration Assistant is not a backup tool.
2. Open the Users folder on your hard disk and drag the folder with the house icon to the external drive; this will back up everything you've mentioned. If your home folder is located outside of /Users/, locate it and drag it over; this can be done by selecting the item in the Finder's sidebar with the house icon and pressing the Command and Up arrow keys simultaneously. If you need a bootable backup, use software such as SuperDuper.

RMAN Backup error with Symantec Backup Tool

My Environment
OS Windows server 2003 R2
Oracle 10G R2 10.2.03 2 node RAC
When i am taking backup maually in the command prompt with RMAN, it is successful, but when we are trying from Symantec Backup tool we are getting errors like
RMAN 03002 failur of Backup lus archivelog is problem,
RMAN 10015 error compiling PL/SQL programme
RMAN 10033 error during compilation of job step2
Ora 00603 Oracle server session terminate by fatal error.
Ora 004030 out of process memory when trying to allocate 4120 bytes(pl/sql) MPCODE,BAMMA, BAM Buffer)
So please tell me why its giving the error with Symatntec and why when i am doing manually it is successfull.
What could be the solution, please we are taking daily and weekly backups with Symantec on HP tape library. Please suggest me to the needful.

Ora 004030 out of process memory when trying to allocate 4120 bytes(pl/sql) MPCODE,BAMMA, BAM Buffer) The ORA-04030 error message is interesting. It means that the OS doesn't have enough memory for Oracle.
So you may monitore the Memory usage of the Server during the Symantec Backup, and check for any activity. May be the Symantec Backup runs when other Batch Jobs use already a lot of memory . You may also have to extend the RAM of the Server.
Also, check for the RMAN script used by Symantec and compare with the "manual" script. May be, some options are used with Symantec and consume more resources on the Server.

I'm a bit confused. Is iCloud now a full backup tool? And if so, are backed up files accessible from both OS X an iOS devices? I'm especially interested with respect to MS Office files.

iCloud does not provide general file storage or backup in the manned of the late lamented MobileMe iDisk. If you want an online backup you will need to find a third-party alternative - this page examines some options:

Restore Firefox bookmark backup doesn´t work (with firefox backup tool 1.0) Help :-(

Hello, i have a big problem with restoring my Firefox bookmarks and passwords with " Firefox Backup Tool" Its a "....fbk" file.
My laptop had some problems so i made a new system set up. Backup with "Mozbackup" didn´t work.( Error message) so i used "Firefox Backup Tool 1.0" for backup all my bookmarks. The program said "backup succesful" and i got a 12mb ..fbk file. But when i tried restoring it, it says "restore successful" but there is nothing in Firefox when i start the program and look for the bookmarks. :-( I tried it over 10 times and older versions.. Firefox 23 or 3.6 etc.... nothing works.
Can someone help me to get my bookmarks back? Or can i open the jpk file manually and copy it in firefox?

Never worked on Non-RMAN Backup tools

I have never worked on Non-RMAN backup tools. I have only worked on databases which are below 1 TB in size. If you have an Oracle 10GR2 Database which is 5 TB in size, would you still recommend RMAN for it?
Do third party tools use RMAN internally ie integrated to it?

My production DB is 800gb in size and it takes 3.5 hours to take a full backup in compressed mode. This means , it will take around 15 hours to backup a 5TB database !!

You are not obliged to do full backups with RMAN. You can use this strategy for example :

You will have a fist full backup (image copy) to do but after that only incremental backups will be done. Much space is needed of course but it works well.
