Backup unknown error

My iPhone appears to sync correctly but will not complete with a backup. I receive the following error..."iTunes could not back up the iphone "xxxxxxx" because an unknown error occured (-20). I have tried resinstalling all apple software, rebooted my computer, turned iPhone on and off. Any suggestions?

My iPhone is coming up with the exact message that yours was and I've tried everything. In the end I had to install the iPhone update without backing up which did work however I still have the problem that when syncing the error message still comes up. Please can you tell me exactly what you did to resolve the problem as I can't find anything anywhere to help me and your's is the only post I've been able to find!

  • Unknown Error when trying to restore backup on iPad

I'm trying to restore a backup onto my iPad 2, and every time I try to restore it, it does what it should where it starts to load and has the estimated time, etc. But when it finishes it says that there was an unknown error. When I tried to restore it, it did the same thing but instead gave me the error 1604, which I still can't get fixed either, but I tried restoring it on a different computer and it worked fine. So I thought there was something wrong with the computer that I originally tried it with that was causing the problem, so I transferred the backup onto the other computer and tried it and it game me the exact same error. I've spent days trying to fix this, and nothing has worked. I already looked at and tried doing what the support sites say with troubleshooting, restoring, recovery/DFU mode, etc. but nothing has worked. My iPad is on iOS 6.1 and I just upgraded iTunes to the latest version before I started all of this, and it is jailbroken with Evasi0n, although I've tried it with and without the jailbreak installed and it still has the same outcome. Is it a memory problem? Has anyone had the same problem and fixed it, or has any suggestions? And if not, is there a way that I can easily extract all of the files from the backup and put them on my iPad without using iTunes? Thanks.

    Error 1604
This error is often related to USB timing. Try changing USB ports, using a different dock connector to USB cable, and other available USB troubleshooting steps (troubleshooting USB connections. If you are using a dock, bypass it and connect directly to the white Apple USB dock connector cable. If the issue persists on a known-good computer, the device may need service.
If the issue is not resolved by USB isolation troubleshooting, and another computer is not available, try these steps to resolve the issue:
Connect the device to iTunes, confirm that the device is in Recovery Mode. If it's not in Recovery Mode, put it into Recovery Mode.
Restore and wait for the error.
    When prompted, click OK.
Close and reopen iTunes while the device remains connected.
The device should now be recognized in Recovery Mode again.
    Try to restore again.
If the steps above do not resolve the issue, try restoring using a known-good USB cable, computer, and network connection.

Which worked fine, (11 dvds). However when I put them into my home computer, itunes gives me and unknown error (-53). The dvd shows up in my D drive as Backup2009-04-24. But itunes does not restore it. Any suggestions on how to get the songs over? Connect computers over a LAN? Anything!

    Couple of suggestions...
    1) With the DVD in the drive, what happens when you choose File > Add To Library...? Are you able to add the individual files this way?
    2) Are you able to copy the individual files from the DVD-R backup to a new temporary folder on your desktop, and move these files into iTunes? What happens when you choose File > Add To Library... for this?

  • "Unknown Error" message when I try to do a backup

When I  try to do a backup with the destop software, it finishes with an "Unknown Error" message.   I can't seem to figure out why and I really really want to do a backup.
    Thanks.
edit:  It gets hung up on "firewall options" and then shows the "unknown error" message.

In every case I can find, clearing the browser cache clears this problem... so let's go a bit further, try clearing ALL the options in the browser.
Just go to the browse > Menu> Options > Cache
Operations and clear History, Content Cache, Pushed Content and
    Cookie Cache.
And I would still recommend a full reboot (powered on, battery pull reboot)
If still not, you can try this:
Go to Backup/Restore in your Desktop Manager > Advanced.  Find the
    browser cache and click "clear".
The return to the last screen and back
    up.

  • Getting "unknown error" with Desktop backup on Blackberry 9000

My first blackberry ever(Bold) and loving it. I have on issue that I can't figure out and involves performing a backup using the Blackberry Desktop. It starts to run, but when progress gets to "Bluetooth Options" it stops with popup saying "Unknown Error". I have reinstall the s/w, also deleted the bluetooth headset that I had paired. Still not luck and always fails at the same point.
Desktop s/w is latest at 4.6.0.12 from May 2008.
I received the phone on Monday last week and was able to get one backup done on Wednesday. Since then I have been setup on the company BES server(not sure if this created my problem). Otherwise, I don't know what to try next.
    Hope someone can help.
    Thanks

I would suggest you use the clean uninstall link and downloading 4.5. It has proved very stable with XP I use it.
I would strongly advise against loading the media manager though, It is less that stable software. I take it you know where to download 4.5?

  • Restored Domain from backup, and now "An unknown error occurred"

iWeb (and my own mistakes) messed up my home page, so I decided to restore a backup copy of the Domain file from Time Machine back into user/Library/Application Support/iWeb. Everything copied fine and opened as I hoped in iWeb. No problems there.
But now, whenever I try to publish my site to MobileMe, iWeb gets through the process of uploading all the files, and then gives me a Publishing Error message saying, "An unknown error occurred." (It says this instead of giving the usual dialog box about my site being published, and do I want to visit my site now.) It looks like my site is operating just fine, new files and text published properly. But I can't get the error message to go away.
Any ideas? My site is here: http://web.mac.com/techinnoval

I don't know why, but now it's working fine. I made one change to my Home page, republished, and now no more error. Odd.

    Hi there packbirdieman,
You may find the troubleshooting steps in the article below helpful.

  • Itunes artwork display issue and a fix for  'unknown error occured (-50)'

Too bad they dont have stickies. This would be a great one.
This is a thorough fix for art work and the -50 error.
If you see artwork in itunes, first verify that the artwork is in the mp3 tag using a program like "tag and rename" http://www.softdepia.com/tagrename_download1291.html
If the artwork shows up in tag and rename, then you added it correctly.
If the artwork isn't displaying on ipod, delete the song and retransfer to the ipod. Next make sure the "view artwork" check box is checked. To do this connect your iPod to iTunes and there will be a checkbox that should be checked to see if you want artwork to show up on your iPod.
If you get this message -
The ipod cannot be updated. An unknown error occured (-50).
And have no artwork at all in you IPOD , dont fret. I am getting there..
NO you DO NOT NEED to FORMAT YOUR IPOD YET as commonly posted. I have tested and retested the following fix-
    Eject IPOD. Kill ITUNES.
    Backup the following files
    iTunes Library.itl
    iTunes Music Library.xml
& anything in the Previous Itunes library folder
and delete them. More info on these at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93732
Dont worry, its much easier to recreate the database than to wipe your IPOD.
Next Start up ITUNES. Plug in IPOD. You now should have a empty database.
At this time, uncheck copy ARTWORK to IPOD, and when it's done deleting artwork, CHECK Copy ARTWORK to IPOD.
It now should sucessfully display ARTWORK and not get the -50 error!!
Now, goto you ITUNES Music folder and drag to the library and it will add you music back in, including your PODCASTS.
All you need to do is click the RESUBSCRIBE button and you are back in business!
IF this fails, which i cant DUPLICATE anymore, try this
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300248
Its the DREADED IPOD FORMAT article.
But you probably wont need it if you follow all these steps.
Post back if this doesnt work and if it does, give me some credit;)

Just as an fyi, to shorten this procedure instead of deleting the files i found out you and open the .itl files and delete all the lines in it so its an empty file.
Then open itunes, and it will rebuild the database with the files from the .xml file.
This saves you from having to rescan the songs..

  • ITunes won't open, unknown error (-200)

I'm on a G5 running OS 10.4.6. Unexpectedly my iTunes stopped opening(latest version 6.4). When trying to open it, it immediately quits and this message appears:
"The iTunes application could not be opened. An unknown error occurred (-200)."
ALSO, the sound on my computer has stopped working, with the exception of the start-up chime. Both of these problems started to occur at the same time (and out of nowhere as I've done nothing different or unusual.)
I have run Diskwarrior (which fixed a bunch of other files and directories!) and have also run the MAC Disc Repair successfully. I have also deleted and reinstalled iTunes three times. However, I still get the same error message and no sound (except for start-up). All of my other programs work fine.
I'm frustrated and out of ideas! Help please!
    Thank you,

    Error code -200 means:
noHardware - Required sound hardware not available [no hardware support for the specified synthesizer]
The hardware still works, as you wrote "the sound on my computer has stopped working, with the exception of the start-up chime. "
I'm no expert on these kind of problems, but it looks to me, a driver is missing or corrupted.
You could try to fix it by (re-)running the latest OS X 10.4.6 combo-update.
    This will sometimes fix problems.
If that fails, you might have to do an Archive and Install. More hints about that feature here
Before doing all that, it could be wise to post a question in the Using Mac OS X Tiger forum.

  • I cannot sign into App Store. "unknown error" and then "We cannot complete your request. There has been an error in the App Store. Please try again later. (4)"

I cannot sign in to the App Store.
I changed countries a few months ago and updated all my account info and everything was working fine, until recently, while trying to upgrade my softwear to Mavericks, which I cannot do. My apple Username and password work fine on iTunes and on my iPhone. I can also access all my account info when I sign in through the website. It just will not work for the App Store on my Mac Pro.
When I click "Welcome" under Quick Links it asks me to sign in. I sign in with my Apple Username and Password and then it DOES NOTHING
When I click on "Free Upgrade" and then "Install" on the mavericks software, it asks me to sign in again. This time it says "unknown error" and then it says "We cannot complete your request. There has been an error in the App Store. Please try again later. (4)"
I''m completely blocked. I cannot procede without being able to update my software.
    Please help me.

    You could try this.
Back up all data.Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/NetworkInterfaces.plist
Right-click or control-click the line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password. Reboot and test. If there's no change, restore the item you deleted from a backup, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Otherwise, you may need to recreate some of your settings in the Network preference pane.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
