Backup up to a Vault. Can I now delete my Aperture copies?

I am working on a MacBook Air that only has a 120GB SSD so I am always short of space. I have now run out of space so I need to do something.
I have backed up Aperture to a Vault on a Server. Can I now delete all of the images/projects on the MacBook and start again with a  clean set up? If I do that, can I still recover all the images from the Vault if I ever need to?
Thanks in advance.
David

Hi long_haired_david,
The attached article explains that Aperture libraries and vaults need to be saved on a locally mounted USB or Firewire drive, not a network drive.
I would suggest you copy your Aperture Library to an external drive and confirm you can open the library from the external drive before deleting it from your internal drive on the MacBook Air.
Aperture: Use locally mounted Mac OS X Extended volumes for your Aperture library
Also, it is strongly recommended that the Aperture library be stored on a locally mounted hard drive. Storing the Aperture library on a network share can also lead to poor performance, data corruption, or data loss.
I hope this information helps ....
Have a great day!

I a got a new phone and backed all of my stuff on to the new one can I now delete the old phone backups off I cloud without deleting the content from my phone?

Yes, absolutely, but before you do, give yourself three or four days to verify that you have everything on the new phone. You also probably will not be able to delete old backup for three days anyway, I have heard that Apple places server in three days lock out after restore from backup initially started.

  • I have just imported my photos on my iPad to my mac book. can i now delete them from the iPad to create more space without losing them on the mac book?

i have just imported my photos on my ipad to my new mac book pro. can i now delete them from my ipad to create more space without losing them on my laptop?

Yes you can delete them. Removing them from the iPad has no effect at all on the Mac.

  • HT5637 now that I have subscribed to iTunes match and synched with my phone, I assume that all the music stored on my phone is now stored in the cloud.  Can I now delete the tunes on my phone so that I regain storage space?

Now that I have subscribed to iTunes Match and synched my phone, I'm assuming that my 6.9GB of music and 2.3 GB of videos are stored in the cloud and accessible to my phone for listening or watching.  Can I now delete them from my phone so that I regain the 9.2GB of storage space?

Go to Settings > General > Usage, select Music, then Edit. There will be a delete option there. It may take a few minutes to delete if you have a large collection on your iPhone.

  • If I have streamed my photos from my iPhone 5 to my iPad, through icloud, can I now delete them from my phone or will this cause them to be deleted from my iPad also. I need to do an update and free some space

I have icloud. I have backed up my photos from my iPhone 5 to my iPad. Can I now delete the photos from my phone and they will stay on my iPad? I need to clear space in order to run an update.

I get the following warning message when deleting a shared Phoyo Stream:
"Name of Stream" will be deleted from all of your devices and the devices of subscribers."
It pops up because that is what will happen. It does not mean photos stored locally in iPhoto on your Mac will be deleted.
If iPhoto is set to automatically import photos in your Photo Stream and store locally on Mac, you are covered with photos copied to "My Photo Steam". I don't believe that includes the photos in a shared photo stream you create or that you accept which was created by someone else. I can add photos to a shared stream from photos on my iPhone that were transferred from my computer. If those were saved by iPhoto on my Mac as well which are already in iPhoto on my Mac, I would not want that.

  • I've installed lightroom cc can i now delete lightroom 5 ?

I've installed lightroom cc can i now delete lightroom 5 ?

I'd advise against it on general grounds.
With other Adobe applications, like Photoshop, it is known to potentially cause a lot of problems. The uninstaller apparently has no concept of any later version still installed, and so it leaves behind many "empty" pointers to itself, rather than the later version. Effectively, it tells the OS that the application is simply no longer installed.
I don't know of any specific Lightroom issues, but I'm not going to try to find out. Uninstall in reverse version order, then reinstall.

  • Imported new photos to iPhoto - can I now delete the old folders?

I just finished importing a bunch of photos from folders on my Mac into iPhoto. Can I now delete those folders?

As long as you have iPhoto setup to copy photos into the library (a managed library) when imported
    you can delete the folders.

  • Can I delete the folder in the vault drive called "images deleted from Aperture Lib" ?

I am reorganizing and separting my main Aperture library into smaller libs...in my vault drive there is a folder (always been there) that is called "images deleted from Aperture library"...it contains the images I deleted after emptying the Aperture trash. It is large (200Gig) and I want to delete it in finder (put in the trash then delete it...is this a safe practice? Thanks...Steve

    Yes.
When you delete photos from Aperture that are in a vault, the next time you update the vault, the images from the vault will be moved to that folder.  You can delete it as you see fit... it's your last and final chance to decide if you didn't want to delete a file

  • Can I now delete iPhoto after upgrading to Photos

I have upgraded to photos synced everything across iCloud and everything seems to be fine.
I have a migrated library showing in iPhoto
showing a size of 43gb. I know it is not this size but is it safe to delete the iPhoto library. And also can I delete the iPhoto app its nearly 2gb

    Do not delete iPhoto!
Remember, we now live in the world of downloaded software. Programs can get removed or changed and you have no ability to reinstall later. In fact this has already happened with iPhoto.  You can still buy older versions of iPhoto sold on disk but not the current (download only) versions.

  • I bought an external hard drive and now use it as time machine. I copied my photos to it. Can I now delete my iphotos?

My photo library is full. I bought an external hard drive and am using it as time machine. I copied my photo library to the external hard drive and burned all of my pictures onto DVD's. If I delete my photos from my computer, will the photos still be on the external hard drive and saved in time machine? I am parinoid about losing my photos (memories).

I think you mean Your Hard Disc is Full as opposed to iPhoto.

With regard to your iPhoto Library... you can Move it to another External Drive and use it from there and then you can use TM to Backup that Drive as well as as your Mac.
    1)  Move iPhoto Library to External Drive
See  >  iPhoto: How to move the Library to an EHD
First... Make sure the EHD is Formatted Mac OS Extended (journaled)...
Format, Erase, or Reformat a drive
    Quit iPhoto if open.
Open your Pictures folder and select the iPhoto Library.
Drag the iPhoto Library to the External Hard Drive.
To Use iPhoto on an External Drive...
Hold down the Option key on the keyboard and open iPhoto. Keep the Option key held down until you are prompted to create or choose an iPhoto Library.
    Click Choose Library.
Locate and select the iPhoto Library in its new location.
And also make sure that all is working to your Satisfaction before Deleting anything.

  • Can I now delete/uninstall Logic Pro 9 safely now that I have Logic Pro X?

Is it ok to delete the application Logic Pro 9 now that X is installed without affecting anything?

There shouldn't be any problems when uninstalling Logic 9, but in my opinion this is not necessary. Logic 9 does not claim that much space on your HD and it will coexist rather unnoticed along LPX. You'll gain availability of a 2nd DAW wherein you still can run 32 bit plugins, work on old projects incase LPX has trouble translating them and you'll have functionality available which has been left out in LPX. My advice would be to leave it where it is.
    Have a nice day!

  • I accidentally loaded languages. Can I now delete?

I went too fast while installing Snow Leopard and installed Languages. I must say, I was looking forward to un-checking this box but I didn't get that option. Can I get rid of all those unused languages now - easily enough - or do I just have to live with them?
    Thanks.

I don't think there's a way to uninstall it unless you tried reinstalling SL again.

  • With Match can I now delete the music on my phone to free up space?

I'm a bit confused about the service.  Does match allow me to delete all the music off my phone, ipad etc, then access it through the cloud?
    thanks!

When you turn match on on your phone it makes you remove all your stored songs (but not your podcasts) and then it appears to require you to download them from the cloud to listen to them? My computer is still doing to match process so I'm not sure its all working properly yet.

  • HT1589 I have moved (consolidated) my iTunes Library to my external drive.  Can I now erase the Library that resides in my Mac hardrive?  It is occupying valuable space.

I have a new external drive that I moved my iTunes Library into.  Can I now delete that Library in my computer (Mac) drive?  How do I do this.  I need more space in my computer.

Yes, assuming you've confirmed that consolidation has been successful. Might be a good idea to rename the old iTunes Media or iTunes Music folder on your internal drive as Old Media and test a few things before finally deleting it.
Note that splitting up your library like this will make it harder to transfer to a new/restored system in future. Before you get to that point you might want to review my post on making a split library portable. You should also invest in a second external drive so that you can make a secondary backup copy of your library.

  • I recently moved my Aperture Library file to an external hard drive.  Can I now create a vault to be saved on my Time Capsule for the Aperture library on this external hard drive?

I recently moved my Aperture Library file to an external hard drive.  Can I now create a vault to be saved on my Time Capsule for the Aperture library on this external hard drive?

One thing to bear in mind, if you are using Time Machine on your Time Capsule and have it set so the TM backup includes your external drive, you will effectively be backing up your Aperture library twice on the same drive, once with Time Machine and once with the vault. This isn't a problem unless you start to run out of space.
Another thing to note, vaults on network drives used to be flaky (i.e. not really supported) and required workarounds to be able to use them. I'm not sure if this has changed, but I just managed to create a vault on my TC ok.
