Backup Using Airport Extreme Wifi
Unable to backup onto Seagate hard drive connected to Airport Extreme. When I try to "update" under disc option, it is greyed out. How can I get to the update option so my Airport will allow me to select the hard drive for backups? Thanks.
I attached the external drive to my laptop, formatted the disk and did a complete backup;
Unfortunately, that won't work. You have to format the disk....then....connect it to the AirPort Extreme.....then run the backup.
Time Machine backups are different depending on how the drive is connected. You cannot mix backups made with drive connected to your Mac with backups made with drive connected to the AirPort Extreme. It's one or the other, but it cannot be both.
Please start over again and format the disk for Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
As soon as that is done, connect the disk to the USB port of the AirPort Extreme
Next, check to make sure that the AirPort Extreme recognizes the disk. The steps for this would be:
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the AirPort Extreme icon, then click Edit
Click the Disks tab at the top of the next window
The name of your disk will appear here if it is recoginzed by the AirPort Extreme. In the example below, the name of my disk is WD Drive
If you are sure that the drive has been formatted correctly in Mac OS Extended (Journaled), and it does not appear when you click the Disks icon, then your drive may require more power than the AirPort Extreme port can deliver.
Try a powered USB hub.....this may be needed even if the hard drive has its own separate power supply.
You need to get that drive recognized in AirPort Utility first....before anything else can occur.
Once the AirPort Extreme recognizes and displays the hard drive, then you will then be able to select it as a source for Time Machine backups and run the backup.

But the apple router does not have to be the main router.. it can be in bridge.. as long as it is creating a wireless network it will work fine. -

You can if you connect a hard drive that has been formatted correctly to the USB port on the AirPort Extreme.
Apple does not officially support Time Machine backups for this type of setup, but you could store regular files this way. -
Problems using wired airport express to extend airport extreme wifi
I've followed the instructions in this community to use a wired airport express to extend an airport extreme wifi network. Here is the issue I'm having.
The airport express wifi network has the same name as the airport extreme wifi network. So far so good. My laptop will pick up the airport express wifi in my office, and the airport extreme wifi in the other part of the house without any problems.
However, where the signals for the two overlap, my laptop will often latch on to the weaker wifi signal (I can tell by the number of bars) and my connection speed slows down significantly. Since both airports have the same wifi name, I can't manually switch it to the better signal.
Has anyone encountered this and have suggestions? My only solution was to give the two separate wifi names so i can switch manually, but this is an inelegant solution.Hey dude, i'm having the same problem and i didn't find a proper solution for it, appart of creating another network as you said.
Its weired cuz in my case only the small things doesn't connect to the new router(using 2 airport extreme's) such as the iphones ipods and apple tv, but my mac did it great change the signal all the time i went from the basement to my room. So i just create another network and for me it wasn't a big deal to change it all the time i go to the basement, even more when use a mac.
I know thats not the point when you have two wifi routers, but you know it's tolerable.

If you are trying to "extend" using wireless only......Apple tells us that their "extend a wireless network" feature is designed to only work with other Apple routers.
So, in order to use your AirPort Extreme as an extender, you would need to have another Apple router.....an AirPort Express, Time Capsule, or another AirPort Extreme as the main base station.
I haven't tested the specific Linksys model that you have, but have owned and worked with several other Linksys models, none of which were compatible with Apple for the purpose that you ask about....so I would have to say that it is extremely unlikely that your model would be compatible with the AirPort Extreme. -

Problem: My printer is already set up using Airport Utility. When I print something, the printer doesn't do anything. Is there something I haven't done lately in order to get this printer working using my wifi router?
Suggestion #1: Are the print jobs getting stuck in the print queue? You can check this by clicking on the printer icon in your task tray by the clock.
Error Message #1: Yes, the print job got stuck in the print queue, but the moment, it disappeared from the print queue and the printer doesn't print at all. This is frustrating.
Suggestion #2: Does the printer work as expected if you connect it directly to the PC via USB?
Error Message #2: Yes, the printer works if I connect it directly to my PC via USB, but I don't understand why it wouldn't work with the wifi router, though.
Suggestion #3: This has to do with the way the router handles the connection to the printer. I found another thread, regarding this issue, and it has some information that may help resolve it.

Error Message #3: After clicking on the first link that you posted, it was very helpful, but the printer couldn't print completely and somehow it would stop at the quarter of a paper. It looks incomplete when I took it out from my printer. It does that every time.UPDATE!
Problem solved! So this is just a followup in case someone else ever stumbles into these boards with the same or similar problems as mine, that is, trying to run an HP Deskjet D1500 series printer [mine's a D1520] on an Airport Extreme wifi router's USB port as a network printer [with the Airport Extreme controlled by an ancient G4 PowerMac Quicksilver currently running OS X 10.4.11).
Although it probably SHOULDN'T matter, since this type of printer works fine with just the Tricolor cartridge as shipped when hooked up directly to a computer's USB port, on a hunch I got a black HP cartridge (that's a type 21, not type 22 as I had earlier said), slapped it in, tried a test page, and all's well. So, we can call off the technoid hounds. Everything running perfectly.
I hope this message in a bottle may help someone else out there some day soon who may be scratching his or her head with a similar stumper. And just to recap those important Windows printer settings, they are:
* [Printer Properties--> Ports--> Add New Port...] "Standard TCP/IP Port"
* [Configure Port] IP Address "10.0.1.1" and Port "9100"

Suggest that you enable File Sharing on both computers. Assuming that you have Macs....
Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock)
Open Sharing
Enter a check mark next to File Sharing
Do this on both Macs. Then you will be able to access files one one Mac from the other Mac
If you have an AirPort Extreme 802.11n, it is also possible to connect a hard drive to the USB port on the Extreme. Computers will be able to access files on this "shared" drive. -

I know (in hindsight) that I can manually export it from the Airport Utility, but ideally I would like to include it in my Time Machine backup. I had a situation where my Airport Extreme (3rd generation) just stopped working (no lights, no power). I had not exported the config file. I bought a new Airport Extreme (5th generation) and had to manually configure the new router.
ThanksOne option would be to use Automator and record the actions to run the AirPort Utility; save the configuration file to the desktop (or any other location you want), and then, close the utility. You can then either make this a part of your login startup programs. Time Machine then should be able to make backups.

I am unable to get Airport Extreme WiFi to work with Windows 8 Sony Laptop
My Airport Extreme WiFi works with my Mac Book Pro, iphones, ipad and DVR's, but will not work WiFi with my Sony VAIO laptop running Windows 8. Although it does work with the laptop using a ethernet cable. Has anyone else had this issue and can you please tell me how to resolve the problem?
Windows can have issues with the wireless name.
Make sure the name conforms to windows standard.
Short, 2-20 characters
No spaces,
Pure alphanumeric.
eg AEwifi is a good wireless name.
Fred Blog's Airport Extreme Wireless87AD34 is a really bad name.
Test also by removing the security and just see if you can connect if the short name doesn't help.
WPA2 Personal is really the only security worthy of the name and the password should be mix of upper and lower case plus numbers.. keep it pure alphanumeric also.
Set fixed wireless channels at least for 2.4ghz may help, depending on your location geo standards wise.
Test 11, 6, 1 in that order. With no security briefly. And a short name. (different name on the two bands is also a good idea).
Then wireless is not compatible.. you should download another driver for whatever wireless card the Sony uses.. intel most likely and they have a reputation as lousy. So download latest and a few prior to that as well. -
Mac Mini backup to Airport Extreme
Is it possible to use my Airport Extreme to back up my Mac Mini in addition to my MacBook Airs? Can you explain how I would do so. I have read several posts that seem to indicate that connecting via the USB connection would make my Mac Mini look like another backup drive for the Airport Extreme.
You cannot backup to Airport Extreme unless it has a USB drive plugged in, and that is only in the case of the Gen6 AE.. Apple do not support TM backups to the Gen5 or earlier AE.
You cannot plug in a computer directly by USB.. the AE is now and forevermore a network device.. An AE Gen6 only with USB drive, can be accessed over network by ethernet or wireless. A mini can backup to that just the same as MBA. -
Used Airport Extreme Show Old Location
I bought a used Airport Extreme 802.11ac on eBay. Now using any location services on Safari or Apple Maps shows me at the location of the seller. I have tried going into Skyhook and giving them its MAC address and my correct log/lat, but it has not helped. They say it should take effect immediately in most cases, but so far it has had no efffect.
Our iPhones pick up the correct location, so I have tried connecting my MacBook, and iPads to an iPhone's personal hotspot and also tried leaving both of our iPhones running both Apple and Google maps all day, and again this has not helped.
Is it just going to take a very long time for the databases that have that used Airport's MAC listed at the old location to finally pick up the new one?
Thanks for any and all advice.Well, after waiting 4+ weeks I called Apple Support. (Luckily the Airport Extreme I bought on eBay was new/open box and with my dated proof of purchase Apple let me register it for the remaining warranty period. I mislabeled the original question as Used) A really helpful support person (like nearly every one at Apple I had encountered) worked with me.
We reset it again to factory settings, checked that my ISP provided Arris cable/WIFI router 's network showed my correct location (which it did) without the Airport connected, then reconnected the Airport Extreme. But as soon as we reconnected it, both the Arris and Airport WIFI networks showed me back in the completely incorrect location. My support person consulted with another and they concluded that they needed to swap it out for a replacement, that this was not normal behavior after a reset to factory specs.
The replacement arrived today, and after setup immediately reported my correct location. -
DNS Server Issues with Comcast and Airport Extreme wifi routers
I am having significant challenges with 3 Airport Extreme (latest gen) wifi routers and my Comcast Xfinitity service. It once worked just fine, but now I continually get the blinking amber lights stating "No DNS servers" for each of the Airport Extreme (AE) routers. My configuration is:
Coax cable -> Comcast Xfinity cable modem -> ethernet to 16-port gigabit ethernet switch ->->-> ethernet to 3 Airport Extremes around the house direct connected with switch
I have many wifi devices throughout the house (iPads, MacBooks, home automation devices) as well as direct-connected devices via ethernet (one PC connected to AE router).
Each Airport Extreme router is set with these settings in the Airport Utility app:
Internet tab= Connect using: DHCP
Wireless tab= Network mode: Create a wireless network
Network tab= Router mode: Off (Bridge Mode)
I have attempted to put the Xfinity cable modem in bridge mode, and use the Airport Extreme to serve up the IP addresses, but still lost internet connectivity.
I have also attempted to set the Network tab=> Router Mode to "DHCP and NAT" but get "Double NAT" error issues as well.
I have tried using the Comcast DNS server addresses (75.75.75.75;75.75.76.76) setting on the Internet tab for the routers and do end up getting a green light, but NO internet connectivity.
Lastly, I have tried using the Google DNS servers (8.8.8.8;8.8.4.4) setting on the Internet tab the routers giving me the No DNS servers amber light error and again, no Internet connectivity for either wifi-connected or even ethernet connected (directly to Airport Extreme router) devices (like my PC) despite getting a green light on the router.
Any this point, it really seems that these AE routers are NOT compatible with the Xfinity cable modem or service… (and yes, I've tried power-cycling and restarting the modem, and then the AE routers, MANY times to little avail).
Should I move one of these Airport Extreme wifi routers to before the switch, and have the other 2 in Bridge mode after the switch? Do I need to setup a specific range of DHCP reservation addresses for each different AE router?
Appreciate any insight anyone can share with this aggravating DNS server issue between Comcast & multiple Airport Extreme wifi routers.I do not see anything wrong with your basic setup.. the issue is indeed the WAN ports of the AE.. AC version are having problems with some network equipment.
You have listed a stack of things you have tried.. but I want you to move the ethernet patch cable you use on each AE to its LAN port instead of WAN.
Restart the airport when you do that.. and then see if it becomes stable.
In bridge mode the airport moves the WAN port to LAN.. but the WAN port setup itself seems more problematic than the LAN ports.
There are other methods we can try if this does not work.. but in the end.. I would be tempted to take the whole lot back to apple.. they need to start making equipment that works with standard modems and switches.
BTW what brand is the 16 port switch?? Does it happen to be managed (smart type)? -
SLOW download on Airport Extreme wifi. Wired is great. The download speeds are next to nothing above 25 feet away. When i stand next to the AEB it is fine. Anyone know why? Doubt ill get another AEB, very unreliable and has been for some time.
No cordless phone (two iPhones and two iPads though). It does have one or two walls on line of sight. A few wireless door security zones. And a large china cabinet that my wife sure wouldn't let me move. Do any of these sound significant enough to drop the dowload from 30Gb to .1GB...while upload stays consistent. I have had better signal strength through two walls 100 feet out from my house, havent tried recently though. I am suddenly aware as my switch is acting up and i had to use wifi on my xbox.

How do you use Airport extreme at hotels etc, when traveling? I can plug my computer into the Airport with my ethernet but how does Airport pickup signal? What equipment & devices do I need to travel with to make this possible?
You may mean the AirPort Express.....not AirPort Extreme.....as the Express is a popular travel router.
The whole idea behind using this device is that the hotel must provide an Ethernet jack in the hotel room. Then you connect the AirPort Express to the Ethernet jack with an Ethernet cable and configure it to provide your own wireless network in the room. You still have to agree to terms, pay the fees, etc.
The problem with this approach is that it is getting very difficult to find hotels in North America that prrovide an Ethernet jack....most have moved to wireless networks and the others are not far behind.
So, if the hotel is already providing a wireless signal, the AirPort Express is of no use in that situation.
If you normally stay at the same hotels, and know that they provide Ethernet ports, an AirPort Express might make sense in terms of convenience. -
How do I use Airport Extreme to limit internet time for my kids? His computer is hardwired to the modem.
You can set up daily time limits for each computer that connects using wireless, but it is not possible to do this when a computer is connecting directly using a wired Ethernet connection.

A more sophisticated approach would be to use a service provided by OpenDNS. From your computer, this would allow you to monitor web sites visited, and block any unsuitable sites. More info is here:
