Backup vs export?

If I export a project, is it in the familiar files and folders format that anyone without Version Cue can access?
If I perform a backup, can that backup be accessed by someone without Version Cue?

Project export is usable by anyone and has the usual directory structure one would expect to see. Project Export only contains the latest version of each file.
Version Cue backups are usable only by Version Cue (Vc) in the general case - meaning that, without knowing serious details about the structure of the backup file, it is unusable (again, except by Vc).

  • Backups and exports taking longer after Oracle upgrade 8.1.7 to 9.2.0.6

We recently upgraded Oracle from 8.1.7 to 9.2 and also applied HP-UX OS patches after the upgrade....now the backups, exports and batch jobs are running little longer (1 hour longer)...any known issues?

For Batch jobs -- Try analyzing your database schema's referred by batch jobs. Also look if you have suff o/s resources as recommended by oracle for running Oracle 9i software.
For backups -- Check the size of your dmp file before upgradation and after upgrading to 9i. If you do not find major diff in size then it could be a resource issue like cpu usage / io / memory.

  • Can RMAN backup and export datapump executed at the same time?

    Hello,
I have several databases that I backup using RMAN and export datapump everynight starting at 6PM and end at Midnight. The backup maintenance window doesn't give me enough time for each database to run at different time. I am using crontab to schedule my backups. Since I have so many databases that need to be backed up between 6PM - Midnight, some of the export and RMAN backup scripts will execute almost at the same time. My question is can my export data pump and RMAN backup scripts run at the same time?
    Thank you in advance.
    John

Needs must. If you don't run expdp parallel then it doesn't use that much. If it was really killing the system then look into setting up a Resource plan that knocks that user down but this is a big step.
I woud better look into using Rman
system incrementals, and block change tracking, to minimize your RMAN time.

If your shop needs to do both simultaneously then go for it.
    Chris.
PS : One of my shops has maybe 20-30 rmans and pumps all kicking off some simultaneous, some not, from 0000 to 0130. No complaints from users and no problems either. Go for it.

  • Managing Large Aperture file backup and export

I have a 250GB Aperture library file with 30,000 photos on my Mac Book Pro with a 500GB Solid State driive. I bought a 1TB GoFlex external drive with FireWire 800. I copied the entire 250gb Aperture file to the drive. After 24 hours the file size changed to 180GB? I exported the Masters (full size) from Aperture to the external drive in a separate file that is 60GB as a second backup. I tried to "RELOCATE MASTERS" to the external drive, but it did not reduce the Aperture Libray size by anything. I also exported all of the Versions (full sze) from Aperture to the external drive as a third backup. I am terrified of losing my work which is now all backed up in three forms on a single hard drive. What do I do now?
I must decide whether to use the full Aperture.library on the external drive.. which is HUGE and will only get more bloated.
or import the versions with metadata into a new library but manage previews better.
    or what?
    Thanks

First, make and confirm two back-ups of your Library and of any Referenced Masters.  Your originals and each of your back-up sets should be on separate spindles.  Move one of the back-up sets off-site.  End of terror: it is now virtually impossible to lose any work you've done up to the point you made the back-ups.
A good set-up to end up with is this:
    - Library on SSD
    - Masters older than 60 days on external FW800 drive (these will be Referenced Masters; let's call this drive your Referenced Masters Drive).
    - - - These constitute a complete Aperture "set".
    - Back-up Library _and_ Referenced Masters to _another_ external drive (1st Back-up Set)
    - Back-up Library _and_ Referenced Masters to a third external drive (2nd Back-up Set)
    - Keep one Back-up Set off-site.  Never have all three Sets in the same location.
    - Import new files into Library as Managed Masters.  Set Previews to be the size of your laptop screen.
    - Every 60 days, using a Smart Folder to identify Images with Managed Masters older than 60 days, relocate those Managed Masters to your Referenced Masters external drive
    - Back-up regularly
The above is just a template:  adjust to suit.  (Added:) How you get there will depend on where you are.  I didn't untangle your post.
When Images' Masters are off-line (you laptop is not connected to your Referenced Masters drive), you will be able to do all metadata administration, including moving Images, etc.  You will not be able to make Adjustments, Export, or Print.  (But you can drag the Preview out of Aperture and use it.)

  • Cold backup Vs Export Full

    Hi all,
I'm a beginner DBA and I'd like to change my company's backup strategy, which appears to be messy and insufficient...
First of all RMAN is not used yet, but I'll work on it in the next months.
    Besides I have a few questions :
    - does it make any sense to shutdown/restart a db before making a full export (with consistent=Y), if we consider there is no activity (of almost nothing) on this db at night ?
    - I realized that some db are both dumped and saved with cold backups (stop/copy/restart). Is it interesting to make both a full export and a cold backup ? Can a cold backup be useful when a full export is created ? Are those 2 techniques complementary ?
Thank you for help and explanations !
    best regards,
    Antoine

    Hi,
I believe the database is shutdown and started for an export is to avoid a snapshot too old error which could araise when you have consistant=y.Still I do not believe it should be done.
Ok your second oint I would say is complimentary , because even you have a full export when the whole DB crashes. It would be much faster to restore from a cold backup than to create a new DB and import the data.

  • Aperture 2 - Backup differences between Vault backup & Project export

Any difference between Vault and exporting projects individually to Ext. HD..
Is this a DOUBLE backup? what is the safest way if you want to secure master and edited versions and then restore them individually?
Message was edited by: Host <to clarify Subject>

Yes it's a double back-up but there are some differences.
The vault is easier as you don't have to think. Masters, versions and everything else are backed up.
However to restore from the vault you have to restore your ENTIRE library you cannot restore projects.
The vault does not back up referenced Masters. You have to do that yourself though it will back up any versions, book, web galleries etc that you make from those Masters.
Export project will back up referenced Masters IF you select the consolidate Masters option.
Personally I use the vault for back-up and the export project feature for moving from machine to machine.
    Hope this helps.

  • Backup via export function has corrupted the majority of my images

I have scanned the last 11 pages of posts and have not found exactly what I am looking for.
My mother passed away in an accident and just prior to her trip I backed up her 6000 photos in her iphoto 5. I backed them up using export and transfered them from her ibook to my powerbook via the target disk mode. Her laptop was lost in the accident, thus I am the only one that has a copy of all her photos. The problem is about 95% of the images are corrupted either completely or the thumbnail looks good but the image comes up with half the image or all of the image blurred. I have tried to get them back using iphoto 5 and now I have upgraded to iphoto 6 and no luck.
The only info I found was from Toad:
Were you exporting the files to a folder on the desktop with the File->Export->File Export menu route? If so you may have some files with the same file name from the camera and that will cause a problem. Even if you've retitled them in iPhoto the file name remains the same.
This could be the issue here are some of the names that came out during the export:

When I try to import them into iphoto it is unable to import the images. The images in the finder show the size, date created etc. but when you click on them in the finder - preview says that it is an unrecognizable file format or corrupted.
Any help would be greatly appreciated by our family

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. First select one of the problem images and bring up the Info window on it. Then set Preview as the default application to use. Now see if it will open in Preview. If not we move on to the next try. Do you have a 3rd party editor that you can use to attempt to open the file? In not GraphicConverter, which you can run in demo mode, is usually able to open nearly any image file. If it can open your file you can then do a Save As and save it to a new file. Then see if that file will import into iPhoto.
You are aware that iPhoto will not import any file that's inside it's iPhoto Library folder, right?
Give those suggestions a try and post back.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application, iPhoto dB file backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Backup or export keychain?

    greetings,
i'm trying to export or backup my keychain from 10.6 so i can copy the data to my new MBPro with 10.8.  however, the menubar command "export items" is grayed out in keychain in 10.6.  my keychain file is unlocked, as indicated by the lock icon in the top left of the titlebar.  i've quite and restarted keychain a couple times.  it doesn't matter what categories i have selected or whether i have 1 entry or multiple entries selected.  it doesn't matter if i've opened one of the database entries and entered my keychain password to display the password stored.
i didn't find much in the forums about exporting the keychain.  anyone else have this problem before?  any suggestions?
    i'd appreciate any feedback.
    thank you-
    jeffery

    hi alberto,
i have looked there and am considering that after my post.  but one thing that is a little confusing at this point is that i have been using my new MBPro for a few weeks and have a lot of things set up already.   after posting i checked my new computer and that keychain already has about 60 entries since i've been installing software and going to some websites, etc. for a few weeks...  plus i have made some entries that don't exist in my old computer, such as icloud, and other sites for new things i've set up on my new computer.  so what i'd prefer to do is export some things but not everything, like secure notes where i keep all the serial numbers for the programs and perhaps some passwords, but not everything else from my old computer.  i don't want to transfer the certificates since there will be some that i don't need anymore...
configuring, installing, and transferring things to 10.8 has been unusually difficult.  so it has taken much longer...  anyway, it still seems strange that the export doesn't seem to work in keychain 4 (10.6).  interestinly enough, i thought i might export the keychain data in keychain 7 (10.8) and then try different ways to get data in the data file.  that way if importing a file messes up things, i can revert to what i've saved.  but "export" in 10.8 is grayed out also.  so something is amiss with this export command.
so i guess i have another question now.
has anyone tried to merge the keychain data?  for example if one imports a file, will it overwrite existing entries?  or make duplicates?  i'm assuming that one must import data, like mail does.  it might not work to just replace files in ~/library/keychains, right?
    anyway, thanks for your reply-

  • Backup Or Export file is not created by using OEM

  • Daily export backup (via datapump) of a 600GB production database

    Hi Guys,
    I have a 600GB DB.
    10G Database.
Currently I have daily rman backup to tape.
Based on your experience, should i bother to perform a daily export of production database of such size?
    Do u think it's useful?
    thanks

    Fran wrote:
All depends, what do you want to do? Do you have enough space to save a backup and export daily?
In my opinion with one backup is enough to save your database. I'm sorry, I can't agree with that. I've been in situations where the first, second and THIRD backup sources have been unavailable in the event of a Production restore. I had to go to Plan D and cross my fingers (and sweat a lot). That might be overkill, but you should never rely on just one backup method/source for Production data.
Not only that, but, obviously, you can also use an export of the data and import into another database or a schema inside the database in case you need to address any logical corruption. We also use the exports to refresh test databases.
We have many similar sizes of databases and we take exports weekly, instead of daily. An export will be an incomplete backup, obviously, though you can ensure consistency by giving it an SCN to use as a datapoint. You can also run Data Pump in parallel which does speed things up.
If you use it as part of your backup strategy, I'd make sure I had regular backups of the parameter file and the controlfiles (both binary and trace). I'd also make sure I had regular txt files showing the necessary information for the tablespaces and the datafiles which you can use to recreate the files in case you needed to.

  • Backup / Export database

What are the different purposes of "Backup" and "Export" database in Oracle DBMS ???
And about the meaning, they are same or different ???
    Thanks !
    Carollynn.

As I can see it, an export does not really give you the same possibilities as a backup (although I see the block verification iusse, I use dbverify regularily).
The export can be used in two ways. Re-import single tables if e.g. a user wrote wrong data into it. But beware of referential integrity. Then you can import the whole schema/database into a NEW database and you will have a copy of your database at the time the export was taken. You have to make sure, CONSISTENT=Y is set and that, as a general precaution, nobody is connected to the database itself. Otherwise, you might set yourself up for data integrity problems.
Full (hot) backups allow to repair the current instance to a certain point in time. You do not change the instance, you repair it. If done right, you can bring your database back to the point of failure time. Also, you can repair singe tablespaces, ... .
We use both exports for creating copies of databases (e.g. for testing) and for migration from e.g. Oracle 7.3.3 to 8.1.5.
Taking daily hot backups is our main backup mechanism.
