Backup vs TimeMachine

Ok this may already be addressed. Which to use, Backup or Time Machine?

Difference: SuperDuper (which works fine in 10.5) Will make and update a complete backup of your drive and make it bootable.
Good: It's complete and you can restore from the backup with no problems. It's the best way to replace a hard drive, for instance.
Bad: It is only one snapshot of your system at that point in time. The "smart update" synchonizes the backup efficiently, but will overwrite any previous information. You might create a monday, tuesday, wed.... routine to have a snapshot of your system for a set of sequential days, but that is going to eat up a LOT of disk space.
TM
Good: It's a non-destructive incremental. You can find that file you accidentally deleted or previous version as of tuesday, a week before tuesday, or three weeks ago. You will have more virtual snapshots available, going back into history for as long as you have disk space.
Bad: Quirky. Seems to hang on certain kinds of events, such as open files of certain types, corrupt files, etc. Restoring a full disk image from TM requires you insert your install DVD and pull from a version of the history and has some quirks and problems with the restored image. For instance, your iTunes authorizations will be lost and your Safari cookies screwed up.
Right now, I'm doing both. I have SuperDuper scheduled to back up twice a week, so I have a relatively recent snapshot of my startup drive. That's for catastrophic failures. TM is for file retrieval. In the case of a HD meltdown, I'd restore from SuperDuper and then pull very recent files from TM.

Yes, WIFI is slow. If this is your first backup, it will be much faster if you connect to your Time Capsule or Airport Express via an Ethernet Cable.

  • Can I connect a external USB HD to airport and backup with TimeMachine

Using a desktop computer and a portable in my house, can I use a external usb HD connect to Airport to backup via TimeMachine like TimeCapsule???

    Ok. Here's how to proceed.
First, partition the disk, so TM on the G5 has it's own, exclusive space for it's backups. This partition should be 2-3 times the size of the data on the G5, or anticipated to be on it or the new iMac in the foreseeable future. See #6 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum, for detailed instructions.
Then set up TM on the G5 to back up to it's partition. The first backup will copy everything on it, so will take quite a while.
Once that's done, on the G5, set up Sharing -> File Sharing via System Preferences. Add the laptop's partition in the +Shared Folders+ section.
On the laptop, connect to the G5 and to the the laptop's partition on the external drive via the Finder. Then go to Time Machine Preferences and select the partition as the TM drive.
Add that external partition to the user's Account on the laptop in System Preferences -> Accounts -> Login Items  (drag the connected partition from the desktop to the Login Items list). That will automatically mount the shared drive's partition on the laptop when the user logs in (if the G5 is awake and the laptop is in range).
The first backup of the laptop will take quite a while, over WIFI, so be sure it's got as good a signal as possible, and both Macs can be on during the backup. You can cancel or interrupt the backup if necessary, but TM will need extra time to recover when it does the next one.

I am turning in a MacBook, I need to keep my TimeMachine backups on TimeMachine but want to delete TimeMachine history from the MacBook. How can I do this?

    Local snapshots
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4878
    TimeMachine>preferences
how to disable the local snapshot:
1.click the time machine menubar icon
    2.open TM preference...
    3.Option...
    4.uncheck the ’create local snapshot‘
This will keep normal (remote) Time Machine back ups on, but disable local ones. It will also delete the current local cache automatically.
    or
copy and paste into terminal :
    sudo tmutil disablelocal

I have a specific backup on my timemachine that I want to protect from being erased or copied over. I've looked in the "genius" book and SL for Idiiots and all Mac documentation but nothing gives me a clue that it is even do-able, let alone how to do it! Thanx

Thanks for replying. The backup I want to save has my system in "pristene" condition. So when I screw it all up later, I won't have to try to recreate it later. Don't all of the backups get recycled?
Yes, TM will, eventually, delete it's copies of things that are *no longer on your system.* Depending on how long they were there, and how often you've backed-up, they may be kept for as little as 24 hours or as long as there's room on your system. If they were there for at least a week, and you were doing regular backups during that time, they'll be kept as long as there's room.
So if there's room, TM will keep things for months or longer. If you screw something up and don't realize it for several months, you probably won't ever notice it!
How large is your TM drive vs. the size of what it's backing-up? If it's 2-3 times, there's probably plenty of room.

I have managed to get into my computer through the OS X install disk but now my wi fi hardware is gone. Ie no airport.
When I try to re install the airport extreme wi fi base station software  it tells me it can't be installed as this version of Mac OS X (Lion) on is volume is not supported.
Not even an Ethernet cable gets me on line. In system preferences when I do a network diagnostic all I get is the spinning disk. Again, any ideas how to get around this?

  • Cannot make backups with timemachine, external harddisk and airport extreme

    Hi to everyone,
yesterday i bought me a brandnew airport extreme station. i would like to use it for creating a wifi-network in my flat. besides i would like to connect my external 500GB lacie-harddisk with the airport extreme. in the past i this harddisk was connected with my imac over the usb-port. unfortunately timemachine does not recognize my harddisk. in the timemachine setups i can choose my harddisk but when the backup-process should start, timemachine stops immediately and tells me that the backup-volume wasn't found. whats wrong? does anybody know a solution?

a misunderstanding ? say you have 2 Macs on your network. one of them has an external hanging off it. the other Mac could back up to that drive via your network ...

  • Having trouble finding my recent backups in TimeMachine

I had the original hard drive in my MacBook Pro replaced to a bigger one about a month ago. After that TimeMachine wanted to make a full backup which I allowed it to do and after that it just continued with the hourly backups just as it is supposed to. Then my new hard drive failed (hardware problem). No problem, I thought, and put the original drive back in, updated it to Lion and booted the computer in recovery mode to restore from the backup of my failed drive. But then I see that TimeMachine only lets me choose between the older backups I made with the original drive. The newer backups from the failed drive do not show up in the list. Apparently TimeMachine matches the identity of the drives. Is there a way to restore the old drive from the backups of the new drive?

There should be a choice of drives in the "pop-up" menu, above the list of dates, like this:
Click the other one, and the dates should change.

  • ICloud full OS backup and TimeMachine

I normally backup with an external WD HD for Mac.  Twice now have I bought two disks that went corrupt and I couldn't restore my backups.
Is there an iCloud or any other Cloud solution that provides a FULL OS backup (including Applications -- since sites lick Backblaze don't offer Application and App settings backups)?  If so can any of them be integrated with TimeMachine?

    Hi,
You can use a full server backup to perform all types of recoveries, including system state and bare metal recoveries. We recommend this option. Then you could recover your server operating system or full server by using Windows Recovery Environment.

  • Difference between backup and timemachine?

Why is it that Bckup can determine which indvidual files have changed in Aperture and timemachine cannot?
I think its totally stupid that if I add one 2 meg photo to time machine, 60 gigs. Yes thats right 60 gigs has to be written to my time machine harddrive.
Why can the ancient apple backup utility work this stuff out and the uber cool 22nd century time machine cannot.
Yes I am frustrated. The most important files to me are my photos. And yet its these files that I have to exclude if I don't want to bog down my network for hours at a time and use up a 500 gig harddrive in just over 3 weeks (based on one week of time machine backups with aperture included)

Well, I can't really help you. You have all the relevant information.
FileVault presents new problems for TM because TM will not backup a FV protected account until after the user logs out. If your backup is on a network device then TM has to back up the sparseimage file each time it backs up (at least that appears to be what happens.)
Backing up to networked drives makes the whole backup process much slower, but I don't know if you have alternative solutions available to you.
Personally, I don't and won't use TM. I much prefer a third-party utility with much greater flexibility. My suggestions:
    Backup Software Recommendations
My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. PsynchX 2.1.1 and RsyncX 2.1 (Freeware)
    6. Carbon Copy Cloner (Freeware - 3.0 is a Universal Binary)
    7. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
    8. Intego Personal Backup (Commercial)
    9. Data Backup (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility.

  • Moving previous backups from timemachine to timecapsule

What is the best strategy for moving previous backups done by timemachine on another external drive to timecapsule?
Obviously, some of us will want to keep these backups when we move over to timecapsule.

Cable the Mac (to which the external hard drive is connected) to one of the LAN ports on Time Capsule. Then copy the files. Over an ethernet cabled connection the transfer shouldn't take very long.

  • Can't see list of backups of TimeMachine service in Server.app

We can't see the list of backups (users and date of last backup) in Server.app anymore. Load the settings will say, after a couple of minutes:

Service functionality and administration may be affected.
Click Continue to administer this service.
    Code 0.
If I click Continue, I see the list of backup destinations and nothing else. In system.log, I get the error below. Both forward and reverse DNS works fine.

  • How do I restore files from PBG4 10.3.9 .mac backup software timemachine

    Hi,
I just got new the Macbook and was trying to get files from my old mac, powerbook G4.
I tried to use the migration asst but it does not appear to work with Panther OS, I tried installing as directed.
So I thought I could restore from my external drive, the files were archived by the old .mac software Backup.
How do I get Time machine to restore this backup?
Or how else can I transfer my content across, I have an ethernet cable and a wireless network.
    I want my music back!
    Thanks for your help.

    Hello colbc:
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
There is no reason (that I am aware of) that using migration assistant to move from OS X 10.3 to a new Mac with OS X 10.5 would not work:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1554
If I were you, I would try the migration again - following the instructions closely. Since I do not quite understand your current backups, I hesitate to suggest a way to use those.....
Time machine will not restore from what you have. Time machine restores from previous backups it has made.

  • How do I backup with TimeMachine to my External Hard Drive through iCloud?

I have connected my external hard drive to my iMac and it has Back to My Mac through iCloud enabled.  On my Laptop I have been able to access the iMac through the shared computer section of the Finder and then mount the external hard drive to my machine.  In Time Machine preferences I have selected the disk that I mounted and it shows me the name in black and below it iMac in grey.  However when it goes to back up it gets an error and says the Backup disk is not available.  What do I need to do to make the disk available?
    Thanks!

    Two ideas.
    1) You need to drag the little icon next to the Event in the Event Library List (on the left) to the litlle icon for the drive in the event library list.  Do not drag anything from the main Event Pane.
You should also know that a simple drag and drop will copy the Event to your external drive. If you hold down the Command Key while you drag, it will be a Move rather than a copy. If your goal is to save space, use Move.
    2)
The external drive must be formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled). Also known as HFS+.
FAT32 drives will not work. NTFS drives will not work.
If you right-click on the drive in the Finder and "Get Info", you should be able to tell how the drive is formatted.
You can reformat if necessary using Disk Utility, but this will erase anything that is currently on the drive.
If the formatting appears to be correct, report back and maybe we can think of other things to try.
