Backup will not recognize/detect the DVD onto which I stored my files.

The system: TouchSmart tx2-1275dx system running Windows Vista Home Premium (64-bit).  Unit is two years old.
The problem: I am doing a complete restore after complete HDD failure.  I have used the HP recovery disks, purchased online for $16.50 , to reinstall the operating system; it is now back to its as-purchased state and functioning okay.  When I open up the Backup/Restore application and attempt to restore from the backup files on my DVD drive, the system does not recognize those files.  I have tried making a small backup of the restored system thinking that would enable the backup process.  The system will recognize the small backup but not pre-failure backup.  Thinking that the problem was the disks, I tried them on my desktop machine.  Though it runs XP Home, it quickly recognized the backup-disks and successfully restored the files in a temporary profile without issue.
The question: What can I do to restore the backup files (*.vhd) I made prior to this failure.  I did monthly backups specifically to avoid this kind of data loss.  There has to be some way of getting the system to recognize them.
General remarks: The hardware portion of this restoration was easy.  The software reinstallation/restoration has, to date, taken a suprisingly large amount of time and money; yuck.

If you are using the built in Vista backup, here is what I think has happened.
Vista backup uses an image based backup, it stores an image of the hard drive and the files you selected for backup, it also stores a disk signature in the image, it contains partition data and other parameters, since you replaced the disk and most likely is not the same size, Vista backup will not recognize that backup as legitimate, signature mismatch of sorts.
What you can do:
1. If you have acess to a W7 PC you can use disk management in W7 to mount the vhd image and the copy all your data out of the image to flat files.
2. You can do this in Vista but takes some software to be installed
http://www.pronetworks.org/forums/how-to-mount-completepc-backup-vhd-file-t84349.html
Conclusion, you most likely can get your data but you will have to decide where it goes.
I don't guarantee this is the issue, but is most likely.
One other thing you can try is to copy the contents of the DVD to your hard drive, then point to the directory.
Vista and W7 backup is not a full featured backup solution and has its limitations, I sugget this software for backups and disk images, it also has a rescue boot disc you can make.

  • My iMac will not recognize a blank DVD-R that I am trying to burn. It also won't eject unless I "shut down"

My iMac will not recognize a blank DVD-R that I am trying to burn. It also won't eject unless I "shut down" and restart while holding down the mouse button. Anyone have any remedies?

I ran into a similar (identical?) problem.  I inserted a DVD-R and my imac would not recognize it.  The only way to eject was to do a restart.  I tried some of the SMC reset stuff.  That didn't work.  I came across another thread on macrumors (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=336501)
    that solved my problem.
I have an external Western Digital Passport drive that I use for timecapsule.  It turns out
there are two files that WD adds to the /Library/LaunchDaemons that interferes with the
SuperDrive.  I removed the WD files from the LaunchDaemons directory and everything works fine
now.  Again, refer to the macrumors thread for more details.
The files I removed from the LaunchDaemons directory were:
    com.wdc.WDDMservice.plist
    com.wdc.WDSmartWareServer.plist
..yes I had installed the WD backup software to see if I liked it....I did not, but didn't realize this files would cause a conflict with the SuperDrive.

  • ITunes Will Not Recognize My CD/DVD Drive In My Windows Vista PC.

    All,
I was forced to migrate to a new PC for work. It is running Windows Vista Enterprise. Since receiving the PC, iTunes will not recognize my CD/DVD Drive. I receive the following error message:
"Warning, The registry settings used by the iTunes drivers for importing and burning CD's and DVD's are missing....." etc.
I have completed the following troubleshooting steps with no success:
    1. Deleted upper and lower filters in the registry per the Microsoft fix from their web site.
    2. Completely uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes/Quicktime/Etc.
    3. Uninstalled and reinstalled the CD/DVD Drive
    4. Verified that other programs recognize and can burn to my CD/DVD drive. I have Windows Media Player and Roxio Creator Basic installed.
    5. Verified that Windows Vista recognizes my CD/DVD drive.
    6. Installed the GEAR driver recommended on the Apple Support page for this issue.
All of my music in is iTunes and I prefer to burn my CD's via iTunes. I have read that several people are having this issue.
Does anyone have a solution? There has to be a fix out there somewhere.
I can downgrade to XP but it will take an "Act Of Congress" for my corporate IT group to send me the XP downgrade CD.
Any solutions or recommendations are great appreciated.

I upgraded to Maverick and now Time Machine will not connect to the external hard drive to back up files.  The external hard drive is a Western Digital "My Book Live" 2 TB.  How do I solve problem?

I also had problem accessing my WD MyBookLive after upgrading to Maverick.
To resolve the problem, I used  Connect To Server (Cmd K) to specify the IP address.
Then I enter a user id and password I created in the MyBookLive.
You can also verify that you have admin access to the MyBookLive using Safari or Chrome.
Just enter the MyBookLive IP address as the URL.

  • DVD Drive will not recognize any movie DVD disk in the drive - thus will not play any dvd movies.

HP G71 449WV dvd drive will not recognize any dvd disc that has a movie on it. Will not play movies, keeps saying to insert disc when there is a disc in there.  It will recognize a dvd data disc or a blank dvd, it just will not recognize any dvd movies.  I've tried the microsoft fix it, downloaded new codecs, using different dvd playback software but none of that works since the drive will not recognize there is even a dvd movie in the drive.  Computer is out of warranty.

Hello crollinsphoto1, welcome to the HP Forums.
It appears that you're not able to play movie DVD's in the DVD player in your notebook. I will try to assist you with this.
I'd recommend starting with this document:
Resolving DVD and Blu-ray Movie Problems (Windows 7).
Also, are these purchased DVD's or burnt DVD's?
Do the movies play in other sources? (DVD player, other PC)
Let me know how this goes.
    Thanks.

  • W500 Blu-Ray Mat**bleep**a BD-MLT UJ232A will not recognize Blu-Ray DVD movie

Recently purchased W500 4061- W6U with Mat$hita BD-MLT UJ232A optical drive at Firmware level "TC02" will not recognize a brand new Blu-Ray DVD.  But will recognize and play a normal (non-Blu-Ray) DVD.  The system sees the Blu-Ray optical drive and shows it is working normally.  I attended to update the firmware, but the Lenovo Optical Disc Drive Firmware Update 1.6 utility, states the firmware is already at the current level and under the header New Firmware states "None".  Any ideas?  Thanks
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

It has nothing to do with the drive.
Blu-ray movies are encrypted using keys. Hackers break the keys. So new Blu-ray movies then come out using new keys. WinDVD (your Blu-ray playing software) contains the keys, and needs to be updated. So see if there's a WinDVD update available from Lenovo's site. If not, then you'll have to pester Lenovo to get a new update from Corel. You can't get the update from Corel yourself.
Or you can simply buy a better Blu-ray player program, such as Cyberlink PowerDVD.
    Good luck!

  • BIOS will not recognize installed CD/DVDs

System set up auto search does not recognize installed CD players or DVD RW on IDE 2 as being present. I have installed several different units that I know are working and set up passes by them like they are not present. I have checked and replaced all cables. CD unit are getting power and will light up, open and close but they do not show up during set up nor on Windows hardware listing. I have reset CMOS with no success.
I have the most current version of BIOS for this M/B. This problem started recently when I tried to change my CD player.
    1.   Product Type:  645 Ultra (m-6547 V1.X) ATX Mainboard
    2.   BIOS Version. 3.31
    3.   External VGA Type: None
    4.   CPU Type:  P4 2.40 GHz
    5.   Memory Type: 1.00 GB
    6.   Power Supply Type:  A Power 400 watts
    7.   Operating System:  Windows XP Pro with SP2

I connected a second hard drive on IDE 2 and the BIOS failed to recognize it. I also connectted a CD to IDE 1 along with my primary hard drive and the BIOS DID recognize both my hard drive and the CD but the system would not boot up under that configuration. I have uninstalled and re-installed the controller for IDE 2 and the system still will NOT recognize anything connected to the IDE 2. The only other thing I can think of is to reinstall the BIOS. Anybody have any other suggestions on how to deal with a non-functioning IDE 2?

  • MacBook Pro 13 inch will not recognize a burned DVD

Bought this computer in August and last night (October 15) I inserted a burned DVD which the Super Drive will not recognize. What's worse, I can't eject the disk. So it's sitting in the drive doing nothing. Any suggestions on ejecting the disk? Anybody want an almost new MacBook Pro 13?

Launch iTunes, make a one song burn list, and tell it to burn a disk. Your Mac should pop out the old one and ask for a new one. Then quit.
    Does it recognize any DVDs?
Are you giving it away for free?

  • Boot camp will not recognize windows 7 dvd

I have a brand new out of the box version of Windows 7 that I am trying to install on my MacBook Pro via bootcamp.  It took me quite a while to get the HD partitioned but that is now done.  I insert the DVD to install windows and it seems the drive never recognizes it.  I get the following error:
The installer disc could not be found. Insert your windows installer disc and wait a few seconds for the disc to be recognized.
I have tried to insert the DVD at different times to see if it will be recognized, to no avail.  I have tried to hold the option button during boot up to see if I could install it that way, but it does not show the partitioned drive when I do that.
This is not a burned .iso dvd, this is an original Microsoft DVD.  I have tried both the 32 bit and 64 bit with the same results.  between trying to get the HD partitioned and this I have spent a full 24hrs trying to accomplish this task without success.
    Im running 10.5.8
    2.4 Ghz Dual Core
    8GB DDR3
Over 100 gigs of free space
I partitioned the HD with 35 gigs of free space.

You need 3.1 or better yet the drivers from Lion and Boot Camp 4.0
BC 2.x was only for Vista and XP
You don't actually "run" Boot Camp 2.x as much as partition with the Assistant, and install motherboard support drivers to Windows.
"I am USING Boot Camp 2.x"
    You're running Windows -- natively.

  • Power Mac G4 will not Recognize any Internal Hard Drives

My G4 was working fine and I wanted to install a driver for a 'Twin Turbo Mac Video Card' I had in a PCI slot but it required OS9 running. At the time, I had two internal drives 230 and 120 G running 10.4.11 but no OS9. However, I did have an external Firewire Drive with OS9 and OSX. I set my "Startup Disk" preference to boot from FW drive and selected OS9 then shut down my G4. When I powered back on I got the standard "gong" but on my display I saw a "Mac Folder and a Question Mark". I believe that means the system can't find a drive. Is that correct? I reverted back to my original configuration with the internal drives and the FW drive disconnected and I still see the "Folder and Question Mark". I inserted the Tiger DVD, held down the "C" key and it still will not boot from the DVD either. I once again tried connecting a FireWire External drive with OS 10.4.11 installed and the internal drives disconnected and still no bootup. I swapped out Memory, replaced the Motherboard and the battery and even tried resetting the PRAM. Still that stupid Question Mark is showing!! This has really got me puzzled. Any ideas or suggestions out there?

Depressing/holding the Option key at startup activates the Startup Manager (not open firmware). The resulting window shows all of the available startup volumes (hard drives, CD, DVD, etc).
