Backup with Exp,  Can  It used in DB with Archive Log Mode ??

I need information about if When I activate Archive log mode in my database ,after This I will use all before backups with Exp in full,Table, user ...recovery mode .
any advice are welcome
thanks
Jimmy

If you are using archive log mode, you should back up your database by regularly backing up
your data files. If you lose a tablespace due to a defecitve disk or need to do a point-in-time recovery due to a user error, you restore your latest copy (if doing point-in-time the latest copy before the
user error) of the relevant data files an then roll forward using the archived log.
You can not restore your database from an export and then roll forward using the archived
logs.

Anything that was on the phone is already gone. You have no choice but to restore. If you were backing up and syncing the phone on a regular basis, you should be able to restore your backup with minimal data loss.

It would be a good idea to do close down all programs and do a permissions repair. Use the Utilities/Disk Utility application on your Mac hard drive and follow the on screen directions.
After that, with iMovie closed trash the file com.apple.iMovie.plist file located in User/Library/Preferences. iMovie will create a new file on relaunch.
If you are storing your project on an external hard drive, make sure that your external hard drive is formatted for Apple. Should be Mac OS extended. If you reformat, first remove all of your data on the external drive to another drive, because reformatting will erase all data on the drive.
Update all of your iLife programs to current, particularly Quicktime.
Finally, make sure that you have enough free disk space on your startup drive--at least 10GB, and more is better.

Can we use OUT or IN OUT parameter mode in function & if YES then what's limitations?

    hi,
Yes we can have OUT and IN OUT parameters for a function.
As per my knowledge there are no limitations , but as per the convention we will use OUT ,IN OUT Parameter modes for only procedures .

  • Clone database with no archive log mode and downtime with new file structure

We need to clone database with following business requirements :
No downtime at all can be afford
databases are in no archive log mode
data-file locations need to be change to new mount points while cloning for space management factor
Please suggest the best possible methods for same ?

Can you post your version of oracle in 4 digits and OS for better understandig
I dont think you can move the No Archive database to a new location without shutting down.
You just want to move them to the new mount points is it?
    1. How big are your datafiles are?
2.How do you backup this DB?
When you move the datafilles then it becomes inconsistent and you need redo logs and probably archive logs to be there to make the file consistent or else it would be prompting for recovery. The chances are your redolog will be overwritten and hence you wont be able to recover.
    You need downtime.

  • Can I use Time Machine to archive like an external drive?

I've backed up my computer to Time Machine and everything from my computer is there, but I have a new project which needs me to archive 21 pieces of artowrk that have multiple photo images for aech, and they are large size originals. Can I upload these files to a folder in Time Machine or directly on my external drive, so I don't have to have all of these files taking up space on my main computer?

You can, but it is not recommended.
Apparently you cannot partition an existing Time Capsule volume if that is what you are using.
Excerpt from ASC contributor Pondini's Time Machine FAQ:
    3. Can I use my TM disk for other stuff?
Yes.  Time Machine will not delete anything you put there.
But it's much, much better to partition an external drive into 2 (or more) parts, also called volumes.  Assign one to Time Machine, for its exclusive use for backups;  use the other partition(s) however you want.
(Unfortunately, though, you can't partition a Time Capsule's internal disk.  See #Q3 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule for some alternatives)

  • Can I use Standard Keyboard in Landscape/Widescreen mode?

I know there are apps that let you use a widescreen keyboard. But is there a way to use the standard keyboard that the system gives you (in Safari, Settings, etc.) in the landscape orientation? I ask this because my stepdad has huge hands and just can't use the regular keyboard at all. He loves the touch, but it's a comedy to watch him try to enter a single word; takes about 10 tries. My hands are small, and even I find the portrait-size keyboard a bit too small. The simple ability to turn the unit on its side and get a wider keyboard would be a huge win.
Anyone know of ways to alter the system or utilities to achieve this?

Thanks, yes I've seen these. Unfortunately they apply only to specific applications and not generally to the system and to applications like Safari that we use all the time. I appreciate the lead, though.

  • Rman - rolling foward with archive logs during recovery

Database: 9.2.0.6; OS Windows 2003, Rman Backups performed through OEM 10g.
I have been a long time "write your own scripts" for backups but now I'm learning rman. Purchased the Oracle Database 10g RMAN Backup and Recovery book, but it doesn't have all the answers.
I have previously recovered a database using my "scripts" and rolled the database forward using archive files, but how is this done with rman? Rman seems to rely on the control file and backup pieces, where the scripts allowed me to just specify "recover database until cancel".
I have successfully recovered a database. It stopped once it could no longer find the next scn number. I then thought I could copy over the archive logs I have and try it again, try to roll forward, however, during the recover process there were two archive files created which were the next sequence, so I have dupes.
How do I perform a recover, and apply any archives which were not part of the rman backup?
The following is what I performed. I copied all my rman backup pieces to a new server. I created a clone of the directory structure,
    oradim -new -sid <dbname>
    orapwd file=<file_name> password=tiger
    set oracle_sid=<dbname>
    rman target /
    startup force nomount
    restore spfile from <file_name>
    shutdown immediate
    startup nomount
    restore controlfile from <file_name>
    restore database
-- NOTE: It ran and then stopped when it could no longer file the next log sequence
    alter database reset logs;
The database opened and I can access it, but I really need to roll the logs forward.
    thanks in advance.

If these are archive logs that RMAN doesn't know about, you'll need to CATALOG these archivelogs before RMAN can use them.

  • DB Back to a Specific Time with Archive Logs (Until cancel or time?)

I'll try to be as clear as possible with my intended goals and the limitations of the system I'm working with:
    1. We have a test instance of our Oracle DB that I would like to be able to refresh with data from the production instance at any time, without having to shut down the production database or put tablespaces into hot backup mode.
    2. Both systems are HP Itanium boxes with differing numbers of CPUs and RAM. Those differences have been taken into account in the init.ora file for the DB instances.
    3. The test and production instances are using a SAN to hold the following file systems: ora_redo1, ora_redo2, ora_archlog, oradata10g. The test instance is using SAN snapshots (HP EVA series SAN) of the production file systems to pull the data over when needed. The problem is that the only window to do this is when the production system is down for nightly maintenance which is about a 20 minute period. I want to escape this limitation.
What I've been doing is using the HP SAN to take snapshots of the file systems on the production system mentioned above. I do this while the production DB is up and running. I then import those snapshots into the test system, run an fsck to ensure file system integrity, then start up the Oracle instance as follows:
    startup mount
Then I run the following query I found on line to determine the current redo log:
    select member from v$logfile lf , v$log l where l.status='CURRENT' and lf.group#=l.group#;
Then I attempt to run a recovery as follows:
    recover database using backup controlfile until cancel;
When prompted, I enter the path to the first of the current redo logs and hit enter. After waiting, sometimes it says that the recovery completed, other times it stops saying there was an error and that more files are needed to make the DB consistent.
I took the above route because doing a recover until time (which is what I really want to do) kept prompting me for the next archive log in sequence that didn't yet exist when I took the SAN snapshot. Here was my recover until time command:
    recover database until time 'yyyy-mm-dd:hh:mm:ss' using backup controlfile;
What I would like to do is take the SAN snapshot and then recover the database to about a minute before the snapshot using the archive logs. I don't want to use RMAN since that seems to be overkill for this purpose. A simple recovery to a specific point in time seems to be all that is needed and I have archive logs which, I assume, SHOULD help me get there. Even if I have to lose the last hour's worth of transactions I could live with that. But my tests setting the specific time of recovery to even 12 hours earlier still resulted in a prompt for the next, non-existent archivelog.
I will also note that I even tried copying the next archive log over once it did exist and the recovery would then prompt me for the next archive log! I will admit right now that I really don't know a whole lot about Oracle or DBs, but it's my task to try and make it possible to "refresh" the test DB with the most recent data with no impact on the production DB.
The reason I don't want to use hot backup mode is that I don't know the DB schema other than there are probably 58 or more tablespaces. The goal is to use SAN snapshots for their speed instead of having to take RMAN files and copy them to the test instance. I'm sure I'm not the only person who has ever tried this. But most of what I've found on line refers to RMAN, hot backup mode, or down time. The first two don't take advantage of SAN snapshots for a quick swap of all the Oracle file systems and I can't afford downtime other than that window at night. Is there some reason that the recover to time didn't work even though I have archive logs?
One final point. The recover until cancel actually worked a couple of times, but it seems to be sporadic. It likely has something to do with what was happening on the production DB when I created the SAN snapshots. I actually thought I had a solution with recover until cancel last week until it didn't work three times in a row.

I haven't completely discounted it but it seems like I would need to back up to files, then restore from files. I don't want to do that. I want a full file system level SAN snapshot that I can just drop into place. The does work when the production base is shut down. However, considering that I do have archive logs, shouldn't it be possible to use them to recover to a specific scene without having to do an RMAN backup at all? It seems that doing an RMAN backup/recovery would just make this whole process a lot longer since the DB is 160 gigs in size (not huge, but the dump would take more time than I would like). With a SAN snapshot, if I can get this to work, I'm looking at about a 15-20 minute period of time to move the production DB over to test.
Since you are suggesting that RMAN may be a better approach I'll provide more details about what I'm trying to do. Essentially this is like trying to recover a DB from a server that had its power plug pulled. I was hoping that Oracle's automatic recovery would do the same thing it would do in that instance. But obviously that doesn't work. What I want to do is bring over all the datafiles, redo logs, and archive logs using the SAN snapshot. Then if possible use some aspect of Oracle (RMAN if it can do it) to mount the database, then recover to a specific time or SCN if using RMAN. However, when I tried using RMAN to do it, I got an error saying that it couldn't restore the data file because it already existed. Since I don't want to start from scratch and have RMAN rebuild files that I've already taken snapshots of (needless copying of data), I gave up on the RMAN approach. But, if you know of a way to use RMAN so that it can recover to a specific incarnation without needing to runm a backup first, I am completely open to trying it.

  • Recover DB which don have backup and not in archive log mode

    Hi
today one of our DB in oracle 10gR2 in AIX got crashed which is not in archive log and which does not have any backup. It was maintained by the Developers and they need it to be recovered. When trying to open it says message like getting error with system01.dbf needs to more recover. Can any body help me. Very Urgent... Is there any way to recover the db??
    Thanks
    Ram

    Hello Mr.Sybrand Bakkar,
Thanks for your suggestion. Being a DBA i myself knows that without anything I wont be able to. I m just trying to get some suggestions whether is there any way to recover it or has some experts came across these situations and got some answers. When we are not able to think beyond our limit, we come to the forums and post question. I know that this is not the place to write where i can be rude, Hence please change ur perception. When i say urgent, it means that unfortunately they have messed up their DB and came to DB Team for assistance to get their data back which has to be given to their process partners and As a support team we are trying our best to recover it. Anyhow thanks for your reply and suggestion. Have a great day.
    Thanks

  • Just installed 10g Exp, can I use the "Bank" database from MySQL?

So I installed MySQL, PHP, and Apache, separately. I was using a "Learning SQL 2005" book that instructed me to create a play "bank" database, and run the code to create/populate tables. I used the bank database for a while to learn and it was great.
Now I installed Oracle Database 10g Express Edition and I uninstalled MySQL, PHP, and Apache. Is it possible to use this bank database that I was using with MySQL?
When I go to the Database Home Page and go into the SQL Commands section and type "use bank;", it says "ORA-00900: invalid SQL statement".
When I type "create database bank;", it says "ORA-01501: CREATE DATABASE failed ORA-01100: database already mounted".
Also, since the SQL statements that I used to create the database in MySQL is just ANSI SQL, I can use these same statements to create a database in Oracle, right?
    Thanks for your help!

Unfortunately every RDBMs ANSI SQL isn't quite ANSI SQL. You'll find datatypes in mysql that have no direct equivelant, and quite a few items that just won't work in oracle (or ms sqlserver, or ... the list goes on)
Like the "create database" statement, to the oracle engine its an entirely different operation. There is no need to create a database, that's taken care of with the install. And the "use <database>" command doesn't have an oracle equivalent.
Start by creating a database user with resource and connection privileges, and try the mysql create table statements. It'll take some work- changing up the DDLs to work will take a bit of trial and error but its one way to learn.
    $ sqlplus /nolog
    SQL> connect system
    ... Password ...
    ... Connected ...
    SQL> create user <username> identified by <password>;
    SQL> grant resource, create session to <username>;
    SQL> connect <username>
    ... password ...
    SQL> create table ...

  • Can I use username = system when I log into SQL plus?

I am new to Oracle and SQL plus and I have some questions to ask?
I managed to get SQLPlus working using  sqlplus system/password
When I installed Oracle I created a database called ORCL and set a  password.  My question is when I am using SQL Plus is it OK
to use username= system.  The problem is that I created 3 tables in this database but when I list the tables I get about 181 tables returned.
It seems that I have  logged into the master database.
In fact I just used the password I set when I  installed Oracle (not the @asi past)
    from:
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E13212_01/wles/docs42/installadmin/database.html
    Configuring an Oracle Policy Database
To configure an Oracle policy database, you must create the policy database, create a security role and a user, and grant the security role and user access.
To configure a policy database, perform the following steps:
Open a command window, run the Oracle SQLPlus utility, and login as user SYSTEM with the password you set for that user account when you installed the Oracle database software.
    sqlplus system/password@asi
where: password is the password you set for the system account when you installed the database software and asi is the database instance name.
The name of the database I set up when I installed Oracle was ORCL.
I can set up a data source using WebLogic Server Administration Console using  the following data:
    Database name:             ORCL
    Host name:                      localhost
    Port:                                 1521
    Database USer Name:   System
Password:                        the password I set when I installed Oracle
This is different form the book I am using where the writer used the database name XE as in the following:
    Database name:             XE
    Host name:                      localhost
    Port:                                 1521
    Database USer Name:   OE
    Password:                        .......
    Confirm Password:        .......
Anyways I managed to create some tables  using SQL script.  I assume these are in the ORCL database.
SELECT TABLE_NAME FROM USER_TABLES  will list all the tables in the database.
Apparently there are a lot more tables in this database (181 tables) than I thought.  I have only created  3 tables.
    Article
    Section
    Edition
Is this how it should be?
Also I am trying to create another table Catalog  but SQLPlus is not allowing me to do this!
    ERROR at line 1:
ORA-00955: name is already used by an existing object
Next I create an EJB project using Eclipse (Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse).   Then
I add a JPA (Java Persistence API) project facet.  In this I  specify the following:
    SID:                         ORCL
    Host:                       localhost
    Port Number:       1521
    User name:            System
Password:               The password I set when I installed Oracle.
Here there is a GUI called Select tables which gives a list of tables I assume the same list of table
I had listed in DOS however there appears to be more tables here.
Anyways,  I am just wondering am I on the correct path and would this Database I am using be the
ORCL database.  Would all these tables be tables that are in the ORCL database?
Thank you in advance for your help.
    Brian.

  • Can we use one music library - regardless logs on to windows 7 on one machine?

HI, I am using windows 7, my girlfriend and I both have Ipods and use the same laptop with two user ID's.  I have installed Itunes and had it create a new library just for itunes, using my user ID for windows 7 (and my user ID for itunes.)  I was hoping that the same music library would show up when she logged in under her windows user ID, but that is not the case.
I would like to have one library for the both of us to use, regardless of who's user ID we log onto windows 7 with.  Is this even possible?
I really do not want to have to maintain two libraries.

  • Can I use an external monitor in portrait mode?

I do not yet own a Mac, but I am doing up-front research to know what to expect.
I currently have a Samsung 204T LCD monitor (DVI) which allows rotating the display into portrait mode.
I know that OS X supports using an external monitor to extend or mirror the desktop. Can an external monitor be configured for operating in portrait mode? I would expect that this requires the video driver to rotate the display before sending it to the monitor.

I will leave this answer to my original question.
I called Apple and was completely disappointed with their answer. They indicated that they would not answer such a question, since they deemed it to be "outside of the scope of Apple support" since my question was deemed "not a consumer-oriented
    question."
So yesterday, I took my Samsung SyncMaster 204T monitor to the local Apple retailer to try it out on an actual system. I specifically tried it out on the 24" iMac with the nVidia 7300GT graphics card, since that is the system I was interested in.
It turned out that this monitor works beautifully in portrait mode with the above system using Tiger 10.4.8.
So, I went and bought it!!
