Backup with superduper

Hi,
I have a Macbook with a lacie d2 external hard drive and I want to create a bootable backup of my system drive. Is it possible/advisable to use the free version of Superduper to create a clone onto my my Lacie d2 (I use this drive for audio in my Pro Tools music setup) or should I really get a new Firewire drive dedicated for backup....any advice would be great...and any drive recommendations would be helpful too. Thanks
Macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

you can use the free version to create a backup, but like Sandra said using the Smart Update after the original backup is much quicker. Plus, I found out that the tech support itself is worth buying the paid version, as one morning at 4 am on a sunday I had a problem ( i thought it was a problem but wasnt) and they replied to my email in 5 minutes, on a sunday at 4 am! now thats what I call good tech support.

Can anyone help me resolve this error? I used Disk Utility before SuperDuper and that backup also failed.

I was trying to create a bootable backup to an external USB drive prior to installing my new internal hard drive. I simply deleted the LAME Framework folder that was giving the error and was able to complete the process. I think that had something to do with MP3 encoding, converting. Hopefully not in relation to iTunes. Anyone know?

  • Restoring to a new MacBook Pro with SuperDuper!?

Hi, I have a MBP 2.16 Ghz, and I just bought a MBP 2.2 Ghz. Does anyone know if I can just make a backup with SuperDuper! of my current 2.16 model and then restore that image on to the new MBP with out any problems or side effects?

UPDATE: I just got the Tiger install discs that use to ship with the MacBook Pro 2.2 before / during the shipment of Leopard, and it works...no kernel panic when booting from these discs. They are 10.4.10. However, what I don't understand is that you can boot the machine from these discs, but when trying to boot from a HD that has 10.4.11 on it, it doesn't boot, you just get the kernel panic? Anyway, at least I know I can have Tiger... I'm selling my 2.16 MBP

  • Help needed urgently with Superduper backup of Macbook and external HHD

My Macbook is doing strange things (not sleeping and turning itself on and off, fans going mad etc) so I want to do a cloned back up before taking it to my Apple Service store. I have downloaded Superduper ready to do this but am not sure how I use this as I have an external firewire drive as well as the Macbooks internal drive. Ideally I want to clone everything in order to make sure I have it all covered. Can I make one cloned backup that will include the external drive and the Macbooks drive onto one hard drive that I will use just for this purpose? Or do I have to use Superduper to clone the macbook and then do a separate backup of the files on my external drive? All my important files are on the external drive (photos, iMovie, documents) and I do have a backup of this on another portable drive but this is now too small to fit any more on and is therefore not up to date so I now need to buy a bigger drive and do a full back up ASAP.
By the way, I am still using Tiger so do not have Time Machine.
Also, how do i prepare the new drive? Do I need to partition it to a GUID system for my Intel Macbook first before doing the clone?

I am not clear on how many drives you have, of what type, and how much data is on them and which are empty. Perhaps you could provide a list. You say you have an internal, and an external, both with data. If you want to back up both of these you will need another drive that is at least the size of the current space occupied by the files on your internal and important data external. I am less familiar with SuperDuper than I am with CarbonCopyCloner but for both programs there exists a complete bootable backup clone option which puts everything on a drive (including invisible files from your operating system which are essential for your computer to boot) onto the backup. This will also erase the target drive so you need to have an empty drive (or one where you don't care about the content) for a target. You would back up your internal drive in this manner. Your external drive (unless it has a different boot system on it) you can just copy files over since it is just data. It would be handy at this stage if we knew more about the drives so we can make specific recommendations as to what to copy where, and how.
Kappy posted a detailed description of drive preparation in [this thread|http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=7009683#7009683].

  • Time Capsule versus Clone with SuperDuper

    Hello
I have a question for heavy user working with macbook pro & TC.
Till now I made made my backup (Clone with SuperDuper), every 2-3 days on an external WD 500Gb Passport. Works fine but the incremental backup over FireWire take allways about 45-60min. This because he always backup 2 large file which I use every day
    - Entourage Database (5.5Gb)
    - Parallels Data Files (about 32Gb)
My HD is about 80% Full, but most of the files are not change because it are tools and masterimages of files from clients.
Is it workable to use the TC over WLAN for the Backup. I think TM will update both files every hours so my system runs in continues mode when it is connected to TC. Who can advise me if this is a workable solution? Or are there some trick. For me it is clear that the first time backup need to be done over 1000Gb/s Ethernet, but I think even this will take 10-12 hours.
Maybe it is better to use my old backup solution also in the future. The only disadvance is that with SuperDuper I have no versionation of the backups. Maybe better then to use 5 external firewire drives.
    Any suggestions
    Regards
    Gérard

Hello Gerard and welcome to the discussions.
    A few thoughts:
Continue to use your FireWire drive to backup the Entourage Database and Parallels Data Files.
Use Time Capsule to backup everything else, excluding the Entourage and Parallels files. With TC trying to backup every hour, this just won't work with files this large. I know that it is not possible to do incremental backups with Entourage because of the file structure (monolithic, I believe it is called) and assume from your description that Parallels is the same type of file structure. I exclude the Entourage database from my TC backups and instead backup to a small separate USB drive daily. All seems to be well.
If you do elect to use the Time Capsule in your system, you are smart to use ethernet for the first backup. Subsequent incremental backups will go much faster since only changed files will be backed up (assuming you exclude Entourage and Parallels),so wireless should work well assuming a good connection.
Another thought, if you do not need to backup hourly, take a look at Time Machine Editor, http://timesoftware.free.fr/timemachineeditor/, for options on setting the backups whenever you would like with Time Capsule and Time Machine.

  • Time machine by itself or with superduper

I am anticipating the arrival of a package from Amazon containing something very special to me (sounding cheesy enough yet?) and am starting to prepare for upgrading to Leopard. I have already purchased a Western Digital MyBook Premium Edition 500GB hard drive for use with Time Machine. Since I am planning on doing an Archive and Install, I have used Carbon Copy Cloner to create a boot-able backup of my hard disk. All is well. SuperDuper would be really nice to have...it takes three hours to update my backup with Carbon Copy Cloner. Don't need to copy over all my Applications and old files twice...once will do it!
My question is should I invest in SuperDuper and continue to make boot-able backups once Leopard is installed and I am using Time Machine? How hard is it to restore your entire hard disk from a Time Machine backup? (I heard there is an option in Migration Assistant...is this true?) I had never made a boot-able backup until a few days ago and was wondering if they are worth the disk space, time, and money (if by SuperDuper...seems like its worth it over Carbon Copy Cloner). Hope to get Leopard soon (should have paid for shipping instead of USPS. I ordered my external hard driver from jr.com last Sunday evening and had it on Wednesday for $6 shipping.) In case you haven't picked up on it, I'm really wondering on the need to keep a boot-able backup. I'll stop repeating myself now. thanks for your help!

    Adam --
I posted this a few days ago; it may give you perspective re your query. I am reasonably paranoid re back-up, as you will conclude when you read the appended comments.
"I have a slightly different approach: I use SuperDuper! (not yet Leopard-compatible, so updating my Tiger clone is delayed) to clone back up the internal drive (now with a single partition as I had to remove the TechTool Pro e-Drive - when I updated to Leopard - that I had previously created) in my MBP. The destination drive for the clone is a 500GB external drive (GUID partition scheme and therefore bootable) with three same-size partitions. I expect to automate the clone back ups (daily, using Smart Update) plus, once per week, copy the clone to one or the other (alternating sequence) of the two other volumes on that drive. In addition, I have a 750GB external drive that is the destination drive for TM. Finally, once per month, I will copy/replace BOTH the clone AND the TM back up to one of the two 1 TB TeraStations that are NAS on my network.
"The theory here, anyway, is that TM will give me a straightforward way to deal with file recovery and the SuperDuper! clone will give me a bootable system on a physically separate HD in case of catastrophic internal drive failure. The internal drive, the clone and the TM back-up are all physically separate. My TeraStations are backed up by the network's automated tape back-up system.
"I'm still thinking about the best way to back up my library of media files when they're migrated from their current external (to an IBM PC) NTFS volume to a direct-attached 2TB LaCie that I'm setting up for my MBP. I've been backing up these files directly to a TeraStation on the network. TM may be an interesting intermediate step -- automatic and more frequent than my current approach..."
    The topic is available at:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1213189
I can say this: if your TM external HD/volume is not backed up to a network drive or tape system or you do not periodically do DVD backups on, say, a Blu-Ray Disk, then having a second backup image of your Macintosh HD/boot volume is a great way to avoid catastrophe.

I have just upgraded to Mavericks and have been using Time Machine on an external disk with Snow Leopard.  Can I continue to backup with Time Machine on the same external disk or do I need a new disk since the operating system has changed?

    Hi there,
I found that Time Machine in Mavericks will sort it all out for you. You shouldn't need to buy another backup drive, unless you have insufficient space left and can't afford to delete whats on there. It should just work fine.

  • How can I create a new TC backup with ethernet, so I don't have to wait two days for a new wireless backup?

How can I create a new TC backup with ethernet, so I don't have to wait two days for a new wireless backup?
Several times in the last year, I've gotten a message that Time Machine needs to completely redo my backup. Using the wireless connection, this takes almost two days. Is there a way to do the backup with ethernet and then switch back to wireless? Thanks.

May I know what is needed to make sure the MacBook is able to see Time Capsule on ethernet?
Connect an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on the 2Wire gateway to the WAN port (circle of dots icon) on the Time Capsule.
If AirPort Utility cannot "see" the Time Capsule now, you will need to perform a "hard reset" by holding in the reset button for 7-8 seconds or so and then reconfigure the Time Capsule. You can use the same Time Capsule name and password, etc. as before.
Configure the Time Capsule to "Create a wireless network" and select the Bridge Mode option when it appears during the setup using AirPort Utility.
Once the Time Capsule is configured, restart the entire network again. Power down everything, start the 2Wire first and then start each other device after that one at a time about a minute apart.
Now you can connect your Mac directly to one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule for the backup using another Ethernet cable. In general, about 20-25 GB per hour will transfer.
The Time Capsule will broadcast a much faster wireless network than the 2Wire can provide, so you might want to leave the setup "as is" for awhile after the first backup is complete. If you decide to use the Time Capsule as your main wireless access point, you would want to turn the wireless off on the 2Wire since two wireless networks in close proximity can create interference problems.
Or, if you want to use the wireless on the 2Wire, you could turn off the wireless on the Time Capsule. Then backups will occur over the 2Wire wireless, or over Ethernet.
I don't really recommend the "Join a wireless network" setting on the Time Capsule for most users, but you could go back to that setup as well if you want after the first backup is complete.

    Thanks & Regards,
    Ankit Gupta

There is no problem if you delete oracle/BWD/sapreorg/bwd.data1 prior to backup. It will come again since you are using Verify option with BRBACKUP.
What happens when you use verify option is Once the backup phase is complete, all the saved files are restored from the volume (for example, tape) in sequence to the temperory directory (in this case /oracle/BWD/sapreorg), decompressed (when compress = yes was used), read by the check program, and compared with the originals. And the check program being used is dbverify (command dbv).
The problem may not be with oracle/BWD/sapreorg/bwd.data1, it may be with the original datafile bwd.data1. What you can do is,
Run dbv on all your datafiles and check for errors. (recommend to run dbv when database is offline)
If dbv returns an error, then fix that.
If there are no errors reported by dbv, then your database is perfect.
The reason why BRBACKUP gave the error in such a case, as i see it is, since you are doing an online backup, the datafile is first backed up to a backup media. Since verify is ON, the file is restored to the temperory folder. Some changes (even if minor) may occur in the datafile within this time frame and the comparison fails.
Another chance is if there is no enough space in sapreorg and the restored datafile is not complete.
If you get an error like "DBV-00102: File I/O error on FILE (/oracle/BWD/sapdata1/bwd.data1) during end read operation (-1)" on the original datafile, then, resizing of the datafile may help. Not sure though.

  • When is Apple going to fix the problem with slow Time Machine backups with Mavericks?

I have been with Apple tech support and they got my Time Machine working by doing a spotlight re-indexing and a safe boot.  This worked for about three days and I am back to very slow backups.  It is impossible for Time Machine to back up every hour when it takes six hours to do the back up.  I don't want to take hours to re-index with spotlight all the time.  I think taking six hours to do an incremental backup is a bit much.  I see that there are many people that have this trouble and it all started with an upgrade to Mavericks.  The question is when is Apple going to fix this problem of slow backups with Time Machine for Mavericks.  I have wasted more time than I care to.  I am think of going back to Windows.  I need good solid backups of my machine and Apple has taken it away with the new Mavericks. Oh, I am using the UBS 3.0 connection so the drive should not be the problem.  Also this has occurred in about the last five months, so I am not sure this problem was in the original Marvericks.

Allen Thanks for your reply.  All I can say is several months ago Time Machine quit working in a reasonable manner.  Right now I have a Time Machine backup that has been running all night and still has three hours to go to backup 6 GB of data.  I am using a OWC 1.5 TB drive connected directly to my MacBook with a USB 3.0 connection.  In the resent past I have added Dropbox, GoogleDrive and a MAMP server on which I am using a program called Learning With Text from Sourceforge.  There have been a lot of questions on the forum about people having very slow Time Machine back ups, so it appears to be a general problem.  I should also state I am getting this very slow backup after doing the Spotlight re-indexing and the Safe Restart procedure that was told to me by apple support.  I have a 750 GB drive in my MacBook Pro which I am constantly trying to keep at a 5% level of free space.  This might be a problem also.  However, I am working on a lot of things and like to have a lot of things on my drive.  Also the heavily loaded drive has not be a problem in the past.  This slow backup business started about three months ago, so something has happen in a very short time period.  Now it seems even the procedure that Apple support gave me is not working.  Currently I am in China and it is difficult to interact with Apple support to solve this problem, but because I am in China having my computer backed up is critical. I have run the EtreCheck and am attaching the results below. I would appreciate any suggestions.  If necessary I will clear out more of my hard drive if that appears to be a solution.  The Time Machine drive was recently reformed so I only have a few backups on it.  I also don't run the Time Machine all the time as I don't want multi-hour backups running all the time.  I run it every few days.

  • How long for Time Machine backup with USB v. 1

My hard drive might be failing.  I'm going to backup with Time Machine for
the first time ever.  I'll be using a 1 TB external hard drive.  My Mac only
has a USB v. 1, so how long should this take?  I read where someone said
that Time Machine said it would take DAYS to do it.  Say it ain't so!!  Any
    ideas our there?  Thanks!

See this for an indication of transfer rates these are theoretical speeds - real world is slower!
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_device_bit_rates
USB 1.1 runs about 1.5MB/s at full rate.
How much data is on your internal disk?
Wolfram Alpha says 1TB would take 7 days & 17 hours.
    http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=1TB+at+1.5+MB%2Fs
I would add more days to that time to account for the fact that USB 1 is slower (more like 0.7MB/s in my tests from years ago).
This is an appalling idea - your disk could easily stop working in the time it takes to copy.
Fortunately you have got the spec wrong on this iMac…
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/specs/imac-core-2-duo-2.4-20-inch-alu minum-early-2008-penryn-specs.html
It has USB2 ports & Firewire - connect directly to one of those & the time will be much less (more like 1/2 a day).

  • HT3275 Since updating OS to Mountain Lion from leopard, I get the following error message when trying to backup with time machine on external drive.  Could not complete backup to media share.  The network backup disk does not support the required AFP feat

Since updating OS to Mountain Lion from leopard, I get the following error message when trying to backup with time machine on external drive.  "Could not complete backup to media share.  The network backup disk does not support the required AFP features."  What are AFP features and how do I get Time Machine to backup to my current external backup?

This means that your NAS does not support the required encryption. Update your NAS to the latest firmware or ditch it and buy a Time Capsule (they are the most reliable when using TM).

Had 3G, moved to 3GS.  Backed up 3G and restored 3GS from backup with no problem on a Dell computer.  But now when I want to add songs, I get itunes message of death that the new iphone is synced to another computer and now wants to erase everything.  How can I add music without erasing everything on my new iphone?

Yes, I was aware of this but the phrase "Any items imported from audio CDs or acquired from other sources will not copy from your device to the iTunes library." is what worries me.  Will this eliminate my Notes, Calendar Events, etc or will it apply mostly just to the music?
