Backup workflow

As a new user of Aperture, just want to get some proper workflows for backup.
I used to use ACDSee in Parallels, they have a Mac version coming out, but my problem is my 12,000+ image library that was tagged in ACDSee got "messed up" and I lost all the tags (keywords) and even with their tech support wasn't able to get them re-linked.
I've started rebuilding my library in Aperture and have several hundred keywords. I'm using TimeMachine for daily/weekly backups already. I see in the Finder a file called myphotos.approject. As an added backup, I'll be putting that on an external drive too.
My question is there any other files I need for safe off-site backup besides the .approject? Are all my keywords tied to the photos in that file?
Any other pointers for a new user and a proper backup workflow?
Thanks

The easiest backup approach for Aperture is to let Aperture manage your image files (it will put them in a folder structure inside its library package) and then backup with vaults. When you back the fault up, it will automatically handle any changes to the images and/or the database all at the same time into the same place.
Don't let Time Machine at your Aperture library. There are known reliability issues with that.

  • Backup workflow fails - Find Finder Items

I have tried to put together a simple Automator workflow to backup recently changed files to a CD as follows:
[Find Finder Items]: Where:[Top level folder] Whose:[Date Modified]:[Within the last 2 weeks]
[Create Archive]: Save As:[Archive File Name] Where:[Desktop] Ignore unreadable items
    [Burn a Disk]: ...
After Create Archive has run I have a Zip file on the Desktop, but it contains far more than just the files modded in the last two weeks. Even if I reduce the [Date Modified] criterion to [This Week] I get the same result.
Any idea what I'm doing wrong?
I've set up a Smart Folder in Finder to list the files using the same search criteria, and it produces a reasonable list. I thought of trying to archive the contents of the Smart Folder, but that just archives the Smart Folder definition file, not the files it points to.

Whoops! I can now answer this one myself!
It turns out that if a folder contains a recently modified file it is included in the items, and then the entire contents of that folder are included in the archive. I was able to solve the problem by adding a second criterion to the [Find Finder Items] action: Kind Is Not Folder. The Zip file still contains a hierarchical folders/files structure, but now only the recently-changed files are included.

  • Interested to learn about your backup workflows?

i'd be curious to know how users back up their data.
i know there are plenty of soft/hardware specs involved, but what i'd be interested to know is how people handle the logistics and workflows in a world of exploding data volumes. the internal hdd will fill up quickly, bootable backups should be separate, yet another external hdd may be used for streaming, itunes content may need to be accessible from various engines through a hdd attached to aebs, aperture has its vault and raw its appetite for capacity, etc.
...and maybe i am paranoid, ten years ago, a burglar may probably not have taken albums with him but today, he will for sure take everything with an apple logo on it...
    how do you do it?

I use different backup methods depending on the system and how badly I do NOT want to loose my data.
My MacBook is the most backed up.
    a) SuperDuper to a network mounted volume every day at work (this is the only manually started backup).
    b) Time Machine when I'm at home.
    c) Mozy.com for selected files so I have off-site backup.
    d) And rsnapshot for selected files to my workstation at work over lunch.
My Mac mini, uses Time Machine. It is also my home network server with 2TB of external Drobo storage, and it is where my networked MacBook Time Machine backups go.
My Wife's iBook G4 is backed up via rsnapshot every night to my Mac mini external Drobo storage.
My Mom's iMac G4 is backed up over an ssh internet connection every night using rsnapshot to my Mac mini external Drobo storage.
My Wife's MacBook Pro is backed up via Time Machine to the Mac mini external Drobo storage.
My work Redhat Linux development system (2000 miles away) has selected files backed up to my work PowerMac G5 via rsnapshot several times a day over an ssh connection.
My work PowerMac G5 boot disk is backed up via SuperDuper ever night to the other internal disk.
Selected files on my PowerMac G5 are backed up via rsnapshot every night to an external disk.
Select files on several key work systems are backup nightly via tar, which is compressed, and copied over the network to my workstation.
My workstation has about 1.8TB of storage on it. I'm thinking of replacing the 300GB and 500GB internal disks with two 1TB disks now that I'm seeing prices in the $135 range. Another $10 price drop and I think I just might do it

  • Backup concerns (Vault and DVD backup workflows)

I am a little bit concerned with regard to how the whole backup regimen is implemented in Aperture.
    My concerns are twofold:
    - vault is not incremental. Thus, when you update the vault (backup) you are effectively creating a whole new backup to replace the one you had already. If my library consists of tens of thousands of RAW images, it seems pointless to have to back up the whole thing again just to update, say, 50 new additions. What am I missing here? Is the idea to create multiple smaller vaults? One new vault for each major import?
    - backing up to DVD. My current workflow using Finder/Bridge is to take images from my camera cards (which on a typical shoot will require the space of a DVD) and immediately burn a backup before I do anything at all to the images. This of course requires me to offload the cards into a folder from finder. Now with Aperture, you are expected to import directly from the camera cards into the Aperature architecture. Ok, so how do I go about getting my newly imported files 'exported' as RAW files to my DVD for backup purposes? I don't have Aperture yet, so am looking at the online documentation. Does 'export master' allow doing so to a DVD and then burning? Somehow I dont think that would actually work.
I don't like the idea of relying on another hard drive for backup purposes, so DVD's are peace of mind for me (although I prefer to do both).

It is incremental. I know, because I have created a vault and it only backs up what has changed, not the whole library. Very quick too. Not sure how you came up with this hypothesis. Have you tried to do this yet ?

    Two options:
    1) You can export your newly imported master images to a folder on your hard drive and then use toast or the burn feature to burn a DVD.
    2) Copy the images off the CF card, using Finder, to a local directory on your hard disk. Copy this directory off to a DVD for peace of mind. Now tell Aperture to import this directory into your library. After the import is complete, delete this directory.

  • Any ideas for a good backup workflow?

Simple question, but I've read a lot of different ideas. I simply want to backup my photos and want to know what the experts are doing.
What's the safest/easiest way to back up photo library? I use Aperture to create a Library vault on a separate external hard drive which is always hooked up to my system. But if my house were to burn down I'd lose everything. So, should I simply set up two vaults on two separate hard drive and rotate them once a month keeping one of them offsite, or should I make a duplicate of the original library and rotate that monthly with an offsite hard drive? What are the experts doing?
    Thanks,
    Brian

One of the nice things about a Mac is that backup is really easy. I'm paranoid, so I:
-- Run Time Machine on a RAID, and,
-- Use SuperDuper! to clone my drives every morning at 0300, and
-- Use CrashPlan to do off site backups of my most essential data.
(When I lived overseas, I cloned everything every month or so and rotated the hard drive out of country.)
I have a managed library, so I do make a vault of that on another drive, but there really isn't much point. It is much better to have a comprehensive, automatic backup of your whole system than to spend time worrying about just your images.

  • Backup Workflow question

    Three questions.
What files do you back up? We will be using a Xraid, setup with 6 TB in a raid 50. The Xraid is used for footage, graphics, templates, music, jumpbacks, etc. We save the FCP project files on the Server HD which is set to Raid 1. We don't use Xsan, so everything is saved on the raid & server for sharing.
What software do you use for this? Really would like to be able to quickly send certain things into BU with a few keystrokes. We work 24/7, so we need to be flexible with the BU times.
Where do you all back up to? We have 3 workstations with usually over 150 gigs available on the HD's since they are used only for apps, and a few FW drives are available as well.
I know the Raid 50 & Raid 1 should be helpful in this situation, but I really don't want to have to re-edit anything, My weekends are to short enough already.
Thanks in advance for any help.

All you really need to backup is your project file, and any media not avaialble from tape or optical disk. (such as a photoshop file or AE file) You can recapture all the rest from tape, and simply copy from the optical disks what was used in the sequence originally at any time later, and relink the offline sequence to this new media.
Before you trash any media though, you might want to create a new project file with the media manager creating a sequence that references media only contained in the sequence plus handles if any... that way if you need to recapture, you don't have to recapture all the media that was never actually used.

  • Automator iCal backup workflow no longer works

    Hi all,
I am new to automator workflows, but I recently created one to back up all of my documents to an SD Flash card in my Macbook Pro.  The workflow was working good for about a week, and now it It keeps saying that the workflow does not have permission to save the file to the folder.  Any Ideas on how to fix this
    Thanks!

Hi Frank.  Thanks for the response.
(Mentioning Windows 8 was a joke, as I'm sure you know! ;-)
Here's what the workflow looks like;  you'll note the "all green" log at the bottom!
By the way, when I run it, iTunes does launch;  but it doesn't play anything.  And there IS a WCPE entry;  it's a radio station that is in the list of radio stations/Classical and that entry has also been copied to one of my playlists.
The workflow was created as an application and it's run when I power up the Mac.
Thanks for your interest and advice!

  • Backup Solutions for my MacBook Pro+

I have a Macbook Pro (2010) w/500gb hard drive. I have one 500gb external hard drive that holds movies and my Aperture library. My current backup solution is a 2nd external hard drive (2TB) that I attach to my laptop while my smaller external hard drive is attached (it is not excluded from the backup).
I manually attach the laptop and 500gb ehd every week or so to backup to Time Machine
The problem?  My laptop is approaching it's limit and I'm thinking that I need to move my iPhoto library off to an ehd as well.
I'm wondering if backing up to my Time Machine drive with a laptop and two ehd (each 500 gb) is smart or if I need to backup those hard drives to other ehd separately.
Also, I plan to buy an iMac for my family in the next couple of months.  Not sure how that should impact my backup configuration.
I've also heard that in addition to Time Machine I might consider getting an ehd specifically with the purpose of being a bootable drive (via Super Duper)
With all of these options my head is swimming a bit.
Would love recommendations for a backup workflow/solution based on my equipment.
    Thoughts?

Pretty much any drive will work, but for a laptop, you might like to get a portable drive (doesn't require that you connect it to power) with USB3. Thunderbolt drives are also available, but they're more expensive and no faster than USB3 for a single hard drive.
I personally like the Lacie rugged series: http://store.apple.com/us/product/H9377ZM/A/lacie-1tb-rugged-hard-drive-triple-u sb-30-5400-rpm?fnode=5f
If you shop around you should be able to get it a little cheaper than Apple's prices.

  • Automator: auto warning when backup fails

    Hello everyone,
I have managed to put together a workflow in Automator to automatically backup our companies administration on a daily basis. This workflow runs on another Mac. The workflow ends with an email to myself, that the backup was successfully. But... the email will always be sent, regardless if there were some errors in the backup-workflow or not.
I noticed, that Automator creates a logfile of the workflow. Would it be possible, to get a daily email with (a copy of) this logfile, so I will know the backup was really successfully?
    Thanks in advance!
    Maarten

OK, I didn't realize you were referring to the log window in Automator, sorry. When you said +log file+ I thought you had an actual file on disk somewhere. As red_menace said you can't really access that info in the automator action (to bad it would be useful).
You'll need to use the exit status or other indication from some element in your workflow. Without knowing your workflow and how you're doing the BU it would be hard to get more specific.

I just got back from vacation. My new iMac apparently had not shut down, but only went into sleep (if that has any relevance to my qn).
I opened my iMac (Mavericks) and only Facebook opens up - no other page - even Amazon. All say "no data received" - Safari, Chrome, Firefox.
I have restarted (a couple of times) and unplugged it for a half an hour before I got back to it.
I cannot even open Apple/support - I am using my wife's older iMac (Lion) - works like a charm on our network.

  • Data Miner Extension in SQL Developer 4.0 EA3 Release: EA3 Repository Migration Failure

The Data Miner extension in the SQL Developer 4.0 EA3 release fails when attempting to migrate the repository to EA3. This posting contains instructions on how to recover from this failure as well as to successful migrate the repository from EA2 to EA3. There are no problems when just installing a fresh Data Miner repository.
Sorry about the difficulty if this has caused you any problems.
    Mark
Failure message displayed in log when migrating to EA3:
    Error report -
    ORA-06550: line 96, column 40:
PLS-00382: expression is of wrong type
    ORA-06550: line 96, column 7:
    PL/SQL: Statement ignored
    06550. 00000 -  "line %s, column %s:\n%s"
*Cause:    Usually a PL/SQL compilation error.
    *Action:
Instructions on how to recover from failure and continue using original version of SQL Developer:
    1) Execute the following sql as SYS in order to allow the Data Miner repository to be open for use again:
    UPDATE ODMRSYS.ODMR$REPOSITORY_PROPERTIES
    SET PROPERTY_STR_VALUE = 'LOADED'
    WHERE PROPERTY_NAME = 'REPOSITORY_STATUS';
    COMMIT;
    2) During attempted migrationto EA3 failed, access priviliges to the Data Miner repository are revoked from users. In order to use Data Miner again, these grants must be reapplied. You can either use the UI guided process to accomplish this, which requires the SYS password, or you can run the usergrants.sql script, again as the SYS user. For instructions on how to run the usergrants.sql script, or any adminstrative script, review the instructions contained in the install_scripts_readme.html file. You can find this file in the SQL Developer directories created when you unzipped SQL Developer. It is located in the following relative directory: \<SQL Developer Install Directory>\sqldeveloper\dataminer\scripts.
Instructions on how to successfully migrate to EA3.
If you have already attempted to migrate to EA3 and failed, then you need to perform the recovery instructions noted above, after which you can continue with the instructions below.
If you have not yet attempted to migrate to EA3, then just following the instructions below.
    1) Replace all contents the script file createxmlworkflowsbackup.sql with specification contained at the end of this posting. The file to edit can be found in the \<SQL Developer Install Directory>\sqldeveloper\dataminer\scripts directory.
    2) After completing the edit to createxmlworkflowsbackup.sql,  you can proceed with the UI guided migration or perform the migration using the appropriate migration script. Review the install_scripts_readme.html file in the /dataminer/scripts directory for instructions on how to perform the migration using the script. For the UI migration, simply open any user connection in your Data Miner navigator, and you will be prompted to perform the migration.

  • Import of RAW+JPEG pairs?

Just when I thought I had it all together...I seem to have forgotten where I put it. I need some expert assistance.
Aperture manages my Library which is kept on an external HD.
I shoot RAW+JPEG on my D200--two image files for every shot. To anticipate the question--I'm learning about the D200, and I want to be able to see the IQ differences between an Aperture-adjusted RAW image and a D200-adjusted jpeg.
I understood that when I imported my image files into Aperture, both files of the pair were imported and saved in my Library. I know I was working with the RAW file for all my adjustments and exports, but I believed that if I wanted that camera-adjusted jpeg, it was available from my Library. I'd also understood that I could call up that camera-adjusted jpeg using Option+J while selecting the paired RAW image in the Viewer. I know I can get a jpeg counterpart to the highlighted RAW image using Option+J--but whether it is generated by Aperture or camera is now uncertain.
Can someone who knows answer the following:
    (1) Are both images in the shot pair (.nef and .jpg) imported into Aperture?
    (2) If the Option+J image is not the downloaded, camera-produced image--then where does the resulting jpeg file which appears come from, and where are the adjustments for it set?
    (3) If my original understanding is correct and both images in the pair were loaded into my Library--why can't I find the paired jpeg? It's not listed with the RAW files in my Finder, and my Spotlight doesn't find it either.
    (4) Is there a way to get that paired jpeg into my Library along with its RAW counterpart.
One note on backup workflow: If those paired jpegs aren't imported into the Library, I'm fortunate to have followed advice from some of you here in the forum. Thanks to you, I always download my files using a reader and save them to a folder on my desktop. After importing them into Aperture from that folder, I move them to a folder I use to accumulate a batch for burning to a DVD for archiving. Only when burnt, do I erase them from the desktop and reformat my card. If, in fact, I've been wrong about those paired jpegs being in my Library, then I've still got them on my DVDs. Instead of being redundant with my Vaults, the DVDs will be my only source for them. Thanks to those of you who got me to buy into that workflow.
    Terry

Thanks. A little Tough Love from the experts sent me back to try one more time to puzzle through the pages of posts on this subject. Sorry, but there's too much noise and contradiction in those pages of posts for me to buy in.
I did what each of us probably should do--an experiment. I noted the "New Version from Master JPEG" aka Option+J was grayed out if only one of the pair (either .nef or .jpg) was imported. Only having the pair imported activated thet Option+J pick. Excellent, and just what I hoped to see.
I also drilled down to the lowest level of the imported image folders in the Library. I'd previously stopped when I saw the image name but for some reason neglected to open the lowest folder to check for file extensions. Careless on my part. I confirmed what everyone here is regularly assured--that all the imported image files are available in the Library (and Vaults) should Aperture fail, or someone decide to leave Aperture for the dark side. Again, just what I hoped to see.

  • Referring to Automator Results from Previous Steps

Is it possible to refer to the results from previous steps in an Automator Workflow? Specifically, I'm trying to modify my backup Workflow to remove files from a folder before archiving it. I'm writing code and I want to back up my progress every so often. I have a decent workflow for archiving my entire project folder, but my executable is 21 MB where as the source code is .5 MB. I could cut the size of my archive dramatically if I could remove the executable file before archiving (plus it's obviously nonportable and redundant anyhow). I'm running into 2 issues when trying to create a Workflow to handle this:
    1) Find/Filter Finder Items rely on Spotlight meta tags. Since I'm constantly recreating the executable, it appears Spotlight generally doesn't have the executable indexed so these two functions don't work. They simply don't see the executable.
    2) Even if I find the file and delete it, I don't know how to select the folder again to archive it. I'm trying to keep this general so it'll work on any project folder so I don't want to point it directly to the folder.

  • Can't advance photos in slideshow

I have a slideshow of 325 photos to illustrate a lecture; some are timed series and others manually advanced. In several slideshows I have experienced the problem of being unable to advance the slides manually after about two-thirds of the show. When I try to advance, the photo goes back to a previous image (sometimes repeatedly), then eventually after several presses, moves to the next image. This problem starts at the same point every time I play the slideshow and continues for 15 or 20 images, until I conclude the show with an auto-timed series.
I've unchecked the custom time box for selected images (so the default is shown), and I've been careful to pause the preceding auto sequence at its end.

    Hello Bela Feher,
It may be that Aperture's database needs repairing or rebuilding, as database inconsistencies can cause images to appear incorrectly. I do strongly recommend verifying a backup of your data prior to proceeding.
