Backuping up to a DVD-DL in PSE7

When I try to backup pictures that amount to no more than 6.5 GB to a DVD-DL PSE7 claims that it amounts to ca 13 GB. When I start to pick out certain months in the timeline, the size is completely wrong. One folder that only has one picture PSE7 says that needs 2.5 GB! What is going on?

Are you taking backup of your catalog or using Copy/Move offline to Removable disk option.

  • Backup of Leopard Install DVD with disk utility

I'm in the process of saving a disk image from the Leopard Install DVD, but I'd like to be sure I did it right by selecting the Leopard Install partition on the sidebar in Disk Utility, rather than the drive itself. I did so because when I tried it with the drive itself it offered a default name as the name of my dvd drive "Matshita" rather than anything specific to the disk.
I'd also like to be sure the windows drivers are there, so before I waste an hour burning and tossing the result, the question is do I select the drive or the partition to image?

Run the disk utility and select the disk and then select New Image. You will create and image on your desktop.
I used cdr rather than dmg.
I also used Toast8 to burn the image to a DVD
Be sure you are using a dual-layer DVD and your burner supports it.
I successfully burned a backup this way, and yes, it does contain the Windows drivers as well as Leopard.

  • Backup iTunes Library to DVD

On Windows Vista trying to backup a 7.5 gb library to DVD, iTunes writes the first disk, asks for the 2nd, says it is writing song such-and-such and just freezes. Can anyone help?

  • Backup iTunes 11 to DVD

In addition to backing up to an external HD, I would like to backup my iTunes Library to DVD's. The size of my library will require multiple DVDs. I used to be able to do this in older versions of iTunes, but I can't find option for this in iTunes 11.  Is it possible to do?
    Thanks

How to back up your media in iTunes - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1382  - to Cd or DVD only in iTunes 10.3 or earlier.
Burning in Finder might still be available and you can simply burn the whole iTunes folder. In this era of movie sales resulting in huge file storage, for many people this might take tens if not hundreds of DVDs and many hours which may be why it is no longer included.

  • Backup select videos to DVD

I want to backup to DVD 3 seasons of a TV show I purchased from iTunes and remove them from my laptop. Under the iTunes "Back Up To Disc" there are two choices; "Entire iTunes Library" or "iTunes Store Purchases." I don't want everything backed up. Just this one TV Series. How do I do it?

Perform the backup outside of iTunes.
Physically copy the desired Media Files from your PC to a DVD.
BTW: Have at least one Backup copy of all your data files (on DVD, or ExHD). This includes: Music Files; Photo Files; Media Files, Spreadsheet Files; Word Processing Files; etc. Basically everything you need to have that you do not want to spend the time to re-create.

  • Backup from miniDV to DVD

    Hello.
I don't speak english very well but i'll try.
I need do it a backup of my videos. I have a sony miniDV, and i don't have a big hard disk. I have a external dvd recorder, a Lacie, and work very well.
To not have buy more video cassette, i would like to transfer or do it a backups of my videos.
I think only i must import the videos to the program and save it? or i must do it anything else? how is the process?
is my first time in that subject, and always prefer to ask.
    thanks anyway.
    sag

    Hello sagenev....
If you are backing up your media to DVD, firstly, you must NOT encode the miniDV media into mpeg2 (the format associated with DVD for playback on a domestic DVD player).
You should put your DVD into the recorder, but treat it as a DVD ROM, in other words, you just treat it as a storage medium.
The main problem is capacity.... a DVD disc will store 4.7Gb of information. 1 hour of miniDV takes up approximatly 13Gb, so off the top of my head, the DVD disc will store around 20 mins of DV media.
So... as long as none of your media files are larger than 4.7Gb, you can simply drag the files from your capture scratch to the DVD icon on the desktop, and burn a disc...

  • Backup concerns (Vault and DVD backup workflows)

I am a little bit concerned with regard to how the whole backup regimen is implemented in Aperture.
    My concerns are twofold:
    - vault is not incremental. Thus, when you update the vault (backup) you are effectively creating a whole new backup to replace the one you had already. If my library consists of tens of thousands of RAW images, it seems pointless to have to back up the whole thing again just to update, say, 50 new additions. What am I missing here? Is the idea to create multiple smaller vaults? One new vault for each major import?
    - backing up to DVD. My current workflow using Finder/Bridge is to take images from my camera cards (which on a typical shoot will require the space of a DVD) and immediately burn a backup before I do anything at all to the images. This of course requires me to offload the cards into a folder from finder. Now with Aperture, you are expected to import directly from the camera cards into the Aperature architecture. Ok, so how do I go about getting my newly imported files 'exported' as RAW files to my DVD for backup purposes? I don't have Aperture yet, so am looking at the online documentation. Does 'export master' allow doing so to a DVD and then burning? Somehow I dont think that would actually work.
I don't like the idea of relying on another hard drive for backup purposes, so DVD's are peace of mind for me (although I prefer to do both).

It is incremental. I know, because I have created a vault and it only backs up what has changed, not the whole library. Very quick too. Not sure how you came up with this hypothesis. Have you tried to do this yet ?

    Two options:
    1) You can export your newly imported master images to a folder on your hard drive and then use toast or the burn feature to burn a DVD.
    2) Copy the images off the CF card, using Finder, to a local directory on your hard disk. Copy this directory off to a DVD for peace of mind. Now tell Aperture to import this directory into your library. After the import is complete, delete this directory.

  • Possible to make backup copy of Tiger DVD?

I'd like to make a backup copy of my Tiger DVD, just to be safe. I've tried to do this with Toast Titanium and also simply copying the DVD files to my hard drive first. Both don't seem to work.
Isn't this possible? What if this thing gets damaged? Or am I being naive in thinking Apple would allow such a thing?
    Thanks for any help!

The disks which came with each Mac are indeed system specific. However, retail disks which are newer than those systems are not system specific.
Some may believe that they are not system specific, and I've seen them post here. Though these links should satisfy most people's need for clarity:

  • Help Needed: Backup iTunes Using Virtual DVD Media (Image)

    Hi,
My iTunes library is stored on external drive and managed by my G4 Mac mini.
I'd like to backup my library using the internal backup functionality in iTunes so I can do incremental backup. The problem is that I only have CD-R drive inside the Mac mini and not DVD-R so it will take me dozens of CDs to backup the whole library. I do have a DVD-R drive on another PC so I wondered if there is a way to use a virtual DVD-R media (like DVD image file) to perform the iTunes backup and then copy that virtual media to the other PC and burn it. I already tried it using Disk Utility and Toast but iTunes didn't recognize the DVD image that were created using these applications.
Does anyone know if there is a solution for my problem besides installing a DVD-R drive on my Mac mini (which of course is a bad investment on such an old machine).
    Thanks,
    Tal

    Hi Tyler,
You'll really need to use rsync for this I reckon, rsync should already be part of the Mac OS.
I found this post on LifeHacker which is an extract from this MacRumours forum post, which works perfectly for me to keep an exact copy of my iTunes Music folder on my network drive, which is now accessible for any computer on my network.

  • How do I backup Quicktime videos to DVD?

For some reason, my digital camera records movies in quicktime format.  I also recently purchased an iPad and I have started taking short home videos on that as well.  I want to back these movies up onto a DVD (or by any other method that people might suggest) but for some reason I cannot burn the quicktime videos. My main reason for wanting to do this is to preserve the movies (they are movies of my kids that we'll want to watch many years from now, long after my computer and iPad are dead).  The second reason is to free up space on the iPad.
An alternative question would be:  What is the best way to backup home video to preserve them (forever) and free up space on my devices?

Buy an external hard drive and copy the files to that.  It will be cheaper in the long run than burning to DVD, a lot easier and faster to do, and optical media can go bad with time.  If this is the only copy of these movies, buy two drives because hard drives can suddenly die on you too.
Look into gettting something like the http://newertech.com/products/voyager_index.php which lets you use multiple bare drives for archiving purpurses rather than having to buy multiple enclosures.

  • Hard Drive Backup on Dual Layer DVD's

I am only using 13 gigs of my 60 gig(actually 55gig) hard drive, I don't have a FireWire cable or external hard drive to make a bootable backup of my Tiger OS. However, just to retain all the info on my hard drive, can I just burn the contents of my hard drive on 2 dual layer dvd's on my external LG Super Multi-Format cd/dvd burner, using Burn, so that I am at least saving all the info on my hard drive, even if not in bootable form? Thanks, Ken.

A backup to discs is better than no backup. An external Firewire connected HD would be better (it's bootable).
Rather than Burn, look at Mac Backup - Mac Backup Software, Hardware, and Guides for Your Mac

  • Make Backup Copy of Installation DVD

Trying to make backup copy of the SL installation DVD for my current model iMac . But I can't copy to a blank DVD (4.7 GB capacity) because image is 5.74 GB. Should I use a double layer DVD- and if so, what brands will work in the iMac?

While you're at it, if you have 8-10 GB free on a hard drive, create a partition and use the Restore tab of +Disk Utility+ to copy it there, too.
Then you can boot up and run from it instead of finding the disc (and it will boot and run much faster, too!).

  • Backup Fotos across multiple DVDs

    Hi
What is the easiest way to backup all my iPhoto Pictures to several DVDs?
I don't want to manually distribute the pictures an the DVDs.
    Thanks for the help.

You have a big problem, a very big problem and you need to deal with it first.
Your disk is seriously overcrowded. You are in serious risk of major dataloss.
OS X needs about 10 gigs of hard drive space for normal OS operations - things like virtual memory, temporary files and so on. (Much more if you regularly work with large files like video or uncompresse photos.)
Without this space your Mac will slow down as the OS hunts for space on the disk, files will be fragmented, also slowing things down, apps will crash and the risk of data corruption - that is damage to your files, photos, music - increases exponentially.
Your first priority is to make more space on that HD. Nothing else can be done until you do.
Purchase an external HD and move your Photos and Music to it. Both iPhoto and iTunes can run perfectly well with the Library on an external disk.
I can't stress enough how serious the situation is. While the Finder may report 7 gigs available it may be considerably less. Why? Because with an overcrowded disk you can't rely on the Finder to accurately report the situation.
FIx that and your burning issue will go away, I'll bet.
    Regards
    TD

  • Backup itunes onto multiple DVDs

I am wanting to backup my itunes to multiple DVDs and not sure how to do it. I have copied all of the files to a 'burn file', and have tried to start burning...but am told that all of the files need to fit on 1 DVD. Surely there is a way to burn onto multiple DVDs? I will need about 4.
If this isn't an option, what are some other suggestions about backing up my music. I don't want to regret not backing up later!!
    thanks!
    ibookG4   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

This isn't really the forum to post this in, as 'Feedback about DIscussions' means posts related to the Apple Discussions Forums, eg 'why can't I log in on Mondays?' 'this poster is shouting at me' etc.
Are you a member of .mac? If so you could use the iLife plan (or create a new iTunes plan) to backup your music across multiple DVDs.
