Backups... any way around the gigs needed? i just want a restore point

Time machine may be fantastic and all but i don't have an external hd besides my ps3 and a couple of flash drives. not really interested in using 80 gigs of my 80 gig ps3 for a backup. on windows there is an option for a restore pt. it allowed for a user to take the computer back to some previous pt in the computer's life where the virus you found wasn't there or the file you deleted is still available. all i want is a restore pt on my mac. thoughts? what are my options?
an external hard drive the only way to go here?

your ONLY option is an external drive. there are lots of backup tools in OS x but all of them need an external source to store the backups.

I have a work Mac, an air book, a home Mac; husband has desktop and laptop. That makes 5.  My work computer was replaced and I do not know what the company did with it.  I am not allowed to deauthorize all because I did this within the last year when I got my new airbook. Any way around the year limit?  I don't know if I can find my old computer and I don't want to wait months to be able to play my ituens purchases on my new work computer.

If oyu already used up your "deauthorize all" option, you need to contact support so they can make an excemption:

  • Any way around the iTunes 10 upgrade?

Apple now wants us to use iTunes 10, but iTunes 9.2.1 will still work on an older Mac, which I have. I want to stick with iTunes 7 (I have tried newer versions before; didn't like any; I have thousands of teaching files set up in 7 and I'd have to redo all that in newer versions).
Is there any way in iTunes 7 to get around the required download page and get to the iTunes Store?
Or, if I want to get into the iTunes Store, is there no choice but to upgrade to iTunes 9.2.1?
(I realize I can keep using iTunes 7 indefinitely without access to the store.)
    Thank you,
    Michael

Follow-up to my above post from last year -
I did upgrade to iTunes 9.2.1 and can now get into the iTunes store, but even that version of iTunes will not interface with my wife's recent gift of an iPod Touch or our iPhones.
While dealing with another issue with an Apple tech rep named Julie on the phone today, she told me that my understanding was correct, iTunes 10 will not work under OS 10.4.11.
Julie advised that if I still need to run OS 10.4.11 (for above-mentioned reasons of having access to OS9 and programs that run only under OS9), one workaround option is to partition my hard drive and install a newer OS on the second partition that will run iTunes 10.
So happens I just bought a 1-terabyte drive from Other World Computing, so I have plenty of room to do two partitions. On a G5 iMac, the last Mac OS that will work is OS 10.5.6 - and as of today, April 3, 2012, Apple still sells that OS on an Apple install DVD for $17.32, and that includes shipping to central Texas.

  • Is their any way around the icloud activation lock - once the iPad is wiped?

I have an iPad that I bought second hand, i wiped the iPad and it is asking for the old apple id and password, i have searched if their are ways around it but to no avail!
I cannot get in touch with the previous owner as they have gone travelling!
    Any help would be appreciated.

No, there is no way around this security feature. If there was, it would not be any use as a security feature.
Unfortunately, you have wasted your money until you can get the previous owner to remove the device from their iCloud account (something they should have done before selling it to you).
I'm suspicious of the fact they have "gone travelling" immediately after selling you the iPad. My guess is it is probably stolen, they found they couldn't use it, and decided to try to palm it off on another unsuspecting person, namely you.

  • Any way around the 10.5 OSX requirement?  This comes at a shock!!!

I refuse to get a WHOLE new computer because I got an iPhone. It just does not make sense. I have a LCD 800 imac and it runs better than my 1.3 iBook. Any way to bypass install for this computer?

Are you just trying to activate the phone? If so, might be able to activate it on another computer. If it requires 10.5 to just sync the phone that is a little bizarre, and not really sure what you could do =(

  • TS1389 Any way around the "Deauthorize all computers" only once in 12 months?

Is there a way to work around the 12 month restriction on deauthorizing iTunes computers?

You can try contacting Apple and explain that you have been using Windows PCs that last only a few months before failing. Perhaps they will make an exception to the 12 month wait.

The first thing you should do with a second-hand computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. You — not the previous owner — must do that. How you do it depends on the model, and on whether you already own another Mac. If you're not sure of the model, enter the serial number on this page. Then find the model on this page to see what OS version was originally installed.
    1. You don't own another Mac.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) installation disc, which you can get from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller — not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. I suggest you install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the installation media that came with it: gray installation discs, or a USB flash drive for some MacBook Air models. For early MBA models, you may need a USB optical drive or Remote Disc. You should have received the media from the previous owner, but if you didn't, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To boot from an optical disc or a flash drive, insert it, then reboot and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, you don't need media. It should boot into Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
    2. You do own another Mac.
If you already own another Mac that was upgraded in the App Store to the version of OS X that you want to install, and if the new Mac is compatible with it, then you can install it. Use Recovery Disk Assistant to create a bootable USB device and boot the new Mac from it by holding down the C key at the startup chime. You will need the Apple ID and password that you used to upgrade. Note that if your other Mac was never upgraded in the App Store, you can't use this method.
Once booted from the disc, the USB device, or Internet Recovery, launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive — not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive, which is what you should do.
After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. When the installation is done, the system will automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
You should then run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. If you want to upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, get it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the previous owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed — you have to repurchase them.
If the previous owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Apple customer service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.
If the previous owner didn't deauthorize the computer in the iTunes Store under his Apple ID, you wont be able to  authorize it under your ID. In that case, contact iTunes Support.

  • Is there any way around the ETF

So Verizon sold me a "global" phone but they conviniently forgot to tell that global service is not going to work with this phone. I was surprised to learn about it when I called from them from the airport to activate it.  I called to cancel because I was under impression that I had 30 days but as it turns out VZW only gives you 14. Now I'm stuck with 2 lines and a family plan and VZW is asking $690 ETF. Is there any clause that would let me out of this contract without paying the ETF since I was sold a device and service that is not working as promised?
BTW perhaps someone wants to get a family plan with two lines and 23 months on the contract? I'm willing to pay for one month worth of service.

Obviously I was refering to Incredible 2 that was sold to me as a "global" phone.  I know that VZ's iPhone 4 is not a global phone unlike the AT&T's one.
The Incredible 2 did come with Vodafone SIM card but it never worked in Western Europe. The SIM card didn't work in another unlocked GSM phone.
Before leaving U.S. I called VZ customer service from the airport and asked to activate international romaing on my new shiny Incredible 2. The CSR was very nice and tried to help but apparently something didn't work and he gave me a phone number to call: 888-866-6924 (he actually had to text me that number, apparently the phone company cannot transfer phone calls between its own offices. Well at least he didn't ask me to write it down). I'm still wondering was it wrong phone # or did VZ manage to build unbreakable IVR maze.  I didn't figure out a way to talk to a live person. It asked me for SSN (couldn't find a match) or my VZ employee number which I don't have as I am not employed with VZ. Standard tricks, like wrong choice, *, # etc didn't work either. At that time I spent well over an hour on that and my flight was boarding so I decided to shoot VZ an email instead and hope that next day when I land in Europe my phone will magically work.
I received an email reply a day later with apologies and offer of account credit in the amount of my last payment (that was very nice btw). But still no word on making the international service work.  I replied and asked if I can be 100% sure that next time I travel the phone will work and the answer was negative. So then I asked to cancel the service since it was less than 30 days since activation and VZ said it won't cancel unless I pay the ETF as they only give 14 days grace period.
So I'm wondering if it'd be possible to terminate the contract based on fact that I didn't get the service I was sold? VZ salesperson said that it will work internationally but I don't have anything in writing to support that.

  • Is there any way around the slideshow widget limitations

Unless I'm missing something, the only lightbox/slideshow widget that allows you to change the transition speed between images doesn't have an "Add Images" button, and also appears to force you to keep thumbnails.  I don't like the quick fade look I'm getting.  Is there a way to drill deeper into the options on this, or do I have to move on to Dreamweaver and do my own jquery coding to get the slideshow I'm after?

    Hello,
As far as slideshow is concerned, we have the option to control the transition speed in all the options (Basic, Blank, Lightbox and Thumbnails) out of which Basic and Balnk are the options which have Add image option and do not force you to use Thumbnails.
If you are specifically looking to use the Lightbox effect then I am  afraid it does not allow you to get rid of the thumbnails. Reason being, we need a trigger for Lightbox effect to come up and these thumbnails are the triggers for it.
    Hope this helps.
    Regards,
    Sachin

  • Any way around the 393 character code limit?

    Hi,
I'm using BI Publisher with Siebel 8.1.1.1.
I'm using the following to count the number of severity 1 Service Requests entered during the month of January:
    <?count(ssServiceRequest[ssSeverity[.='1-Critical'] and xdoxslt:date_diff('d', xdoxslt:format_date(ssCreated,'yyyy-mm-dd','mm/dd/yyyy',$_XDOLOCALE,$_XDOTIMEZONE), '2011-01-31', $_XDOLOCALE, $_XDOTIMEZONE) <=30 and xdoxslt:date_diff('d', xdoxslt:format_date(ssCreated,'yyyy-mm-dd','mm/dd/yyyy',$_XDOLOCALE,$_XDOTIMEZONE), '2011-01-01', $_XDOLOCALE, $_XDOTIMEZONE) >=-30])?>
I now want to add another search criteria but it blows the 393 character code limit:
    <?count(ssServiceRequest[ssSeverity[.='1-Critical'] and ssTrProductName[.!='WS-MService'] and xdoxslt:date_diff('d', xdoxslt:format_date(ssCreated,'yyyy-mm-dd','mm/dd/yyyy',$_XDOLOCALE,$_XDOTIMEZONE), '2011-01-31', $_XDOLOCALE, $_XDOTIMEZONE) <=30 and xdoxslt:date_diff('d', xdoxslt:format_date(ssCreated,'yyyy-mm-dd','mm/dd/yyyy',$_XDOLOCALE,$_XDOTIMEZONE), '2011-01-01', $_XDOLOCALE, $_XDOTIMEZONE) >=-30])?>
I have tried using an if statement to filter on the product name, but it is not working.
    Any tips will be appreciated!
    many thanks,
    Claire

Try to insert a separate form field in your template where you should declare a variable and assign it the value of - xdoxslt:format_date(ssCreated,'yyyy-mm-dd','mm/dd/yyyy',$_XDOLOCALE,$_XDOTIMEZONE. Then call this variable in your existing form field.
    This should reduce the code.

  • Is there any way around the limit of 50 files in Adobe Send?

I frequently send hundreds of jpegs through SendNow. It seems there's a cap on the number of files that can be send using Adobe Send? What is the best way to send numerous files with Adobe Send?

    H Rebecca,
There are a couple of other issues along with the limit of files.  (1) Adobe Send seems to randomly re-arrange the photos being sent.  It is very important to me that the exact file order be maintained.  (2) Adobe Send does not hold or remember the email address.  My client list is existing and therefore files are sent to the same recipient over and over.  Adobe Send Now did remember the email addresses so this must be an easy fix.  I hope you reconsider the file size restriction as well.

My Question:  Final question I promise.  Did they come over in the number order or did it re-order them random?
Client Response:  The sequence is random; 13, 6, 24, 31, etc.

  • PC died and in turn my main iTunes library. iPhone was synced to it. Now when I try to connect to another library it tells me the phone must be wiped clean before I can manage music with new library. Any way around that? Don't want to lose music.

My PC died and in turn so did my main iTunes library.  My iPhone was synced to the library that is gone.  Now when I try to connect to another library, it tells me the phone must be wiped clean before I can manage music with new library.  Any way around that?  I don't want to lose the music that is on my phone.  I am looking for a way to tell the phone to "forget" the old library and let me start working with a new library.

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for just such an occasion.
Use your backup copy of your computer to put everything on the new one.
It sounds like you have failed to do this, which is not good at all.
You will have to transfer your itunes purchases from your iphone.  Authorize your computer for your itunes account
About iTunes Store authorization and deauthorization
Open itunes, plug in iphone, do NOT sync, click File>Transfer Purchases
When you do sync you will lose your pics ( photo library - synced from your old computer), your itunes content ( music, apps, videos, etc) , your contacts and your calendars.  So do NOT sync yet.  This is why a backup copy is so important.
Enter one unique contact and calendar entry on your computer.
When you first sync, you should get the option to merger the data.  Choose it.
If you want your pics, then you will need to e-mail them to yourself before you sync.  They will not be of the original quality as they are reduced when synced to iphone.
When all is as goos as it can be, then backup your computer, and always maintain the backup.

In Pages capitalization doesn't work as described. One can start with lower case and change to upper, but changing from upper case to any of the other options doesn't work. Is there a way around this or is this just a glitch that needs fixing?

I think it does work as described, but the description is not very complete. Capitalization does not change any of the characters that you type; what it does is allow some of the lower case characters to display as capitals. If you copy the result and paste it as plain text, you'll see that the lower case characters are still there. It doesn't actually say anywhere that it can make capitals display as lower case, and it can't.
The obvious way around this is to actually type what you want.
The more powerful way is to install WordService from Devon Technologies which adds the functionality of Pages' capitalization menu as well a lot of other ones. WordService actually changes the character to the one displayed, and it works in most of the applications on your Mac.
