Backups not happpening

Is this happening for anyone else? Time Machine is all set, did one backup to my external drive at 11:13. Several files were changed on the computer at 11:50 or so, copied from a Tiger machine. The directory that those files are in is not excluded from Time Machine backups.
Time Machine says it's going to do the next backup at 11:52. For some reason it doesn't do that one, then says it's going to do one at 1:32 AM. I leave the laptop open with the drive connected & visible in the Finder, but when it gets to 1:32 AM it does no backup and says it will backup at 2:32 AM. On the external drive there's only the 11:13 backup and a folder called "Latest". In the Time Machine page of System Preferences it reports the last backup at 11:13.
Fresh erase and install of Leopard, no funny business, regular external USB drive. Is there something I'm just missing here?

Hey Christopher,
That's a good suggestion; thanks for that info. In this case, though, it's always been plugged in. The logs show the backups that I did manually with "Back up now", but there's just nothing for the times when it should back up.
One thing I noticed is that there is no process running called "backupd", and there are some log entries from the Finder et al about "unexpected reply from backup server". I wonder if there is some daemon that does the automatic backups and it died, and there's nothing watching over it to restart it automatically? I just rebooted now, and a process called "backupd-helper" appeared at first, but soon vanished.
Thanks again!
Dave

  • Time Machine backup not appear

    Hi
I bought a bigger HDD for MacBook Pro (so I could install VMs locally) and decided to test TM data restore as a procedure to migrate data. I wanted to keep using my MBP for work, but luckily we have a loan which i used as follows:-
    - Stuck in new 200GB HDD in drive chassis
    - Booted off new HDD via USB on MBP
    - Installed Leopard on new HDD
    - Backed up my MBP to Leopard Server-based Time Machine across network
    - When reached Migration Assistant I chose to restore from TM Backup
    - This then froze. (I guess it doesn't just look across a network for TM Servers)
    So...
    - I rebooted MBP
    - Plugged in external FW drive used for TM backups on Leopard Server
    - Asked Migration Assistant to restore from TM Backup
    - It found the drive but only offered to restore the Leopard Server Backup, not my laptop.
    Have I misunderstood something?
    Cheers
    C

In the Finder, press the key combination shift-command-C, or select
    Go ▹ Computer
from the menu bar. A window will open showing all mounted volumes. Select the one in question and open the Info window. What is shown as the Format in the General section? If it's not "Mac OS Extended," Time Machine can't back up the volume.

  • Why is Time machine backup not working after Mavericks upgrade?

Why is Time machine backup not working after Mavericks upgrade?

I had the same problem due to the Fire Wire port.  Apple tested it told me it is OK!, I tried a new cable, and have tested both ports on my back up device.  I find it strange that as soon as I installed Mavericks.  The drive does work using USB.  It could be a coincidence, I don't absolutely know at this point, my back up drive ports could stop working, but I doubt it!

  • Latest Time Machine backup not Showing

Here's what I'm trying to do:
Swapping out 320 gb had on a 5,1 MacBook Pro to a 500gb hd. I DON'T have an external enclosure.
I ran another Time Machine backup last night (nov 20) before physically swapping out hard drives ( I do TM backups intermittently). My TM backups are to a FireWire attached external drive, btw, so I get the new drive in the computer, startup while holding Command-R (only works with USB connection I found out) and click on 'restore from the time machine backup'. Under Backups it shows the external drive (we'll call it 'external' )and Time Machine formatted disk image called ''Macbook Pro.tmp' on disk 'external'.
Selecting the 'MacbookPro.tmp' leads to a dialog box of "the backup cannot be opened: if this is a password-protected backup, you entered an incorrect...." in other words I go back and select the OTHER option of 'external'.
THIS gives me some time machine options but this is where my question comes in.
The only options available are from 'August 29' and 'August 23'!  I JUST backed up to Time Machine on November 20! Why is the most recent backup NOT there?
If I went with the 'August 29' restore will it plug in the incremental backups I've done since then?
Please advise. I've looked on pondini.org but couldn't find an answer.

It sounds like you have two sets of backups on that drive.
Were some backups made over a network (ie, while the drive was connected to a Time Capsule, Airport Extreme, or other Mac)?  That's the only way you get a disk image (unless you specifically created one).
The name "MacbookPro.tmp" sounds like the temporary name Time Machine first creates a disk image with, over a network.   That would also explain why it can't be opened, as TM didn't finish creating it, but that doesn't tell us where the backup you ran on 11/20 went.  Are you sure it completed normally?  No error messages, etc.?
Also, did you format the new drive?

For a "hard" restart of your iPad just press the home and power button at the same time and hold it for at least 10-15 sec. until it restarts.

It may be in the process of making room.  What version of OSX are you on?    (That process can be excruciatingly slow on Leopard or Snow Leopard backups over a network;  Lion has improved it greatly.)
A clue may be lurking in your logs.  Use the widget in #A1 of  Time Machine - Troubleshooting to display the backup messages from your logs.   That should help you figure out what's going on.  If in doubt, copy and post them here (but if the same ones repeat over and over, drop most of the duplicates).
If you can, connect via Ethernet; it will be 2-3 times faster.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
If your back up continually fails, you might try turning off back up on your mobile device (settings > iCloud > storage & backup) and then deleting the backup file from iCloud by swiping the backup file on the mobile device (settings > iCloud > storage & backup > manage…) and then turning back up on again.

  • When i sync my iphone it says cant backup not enough space on computer there is 140 gig of free space on my computer

when i sync my ipone is says that "it cant backup not enough space on this computer"  i have 140+ gigs of free space on my mac

Yea... agreed I had about 160 GB free on my Hard drive and tried to synce my iPhone 5S (currently about 32GB in use of 64) and iit says I don't have enough free space. Uh...yes....yes I do.   So I cleaned up backups in iTunes from my previous phone and moved some large files to my 1TB time capsule...now I have over 200GB Free...and yet...when I try to synce my phone and it moves to the "backup" part...it thinks for a moment...and then says...nope I don't have enough space on my hard drive.  Must be new Apple Math?   I ran diagnostics on my system...ran a full permissions check and cleaned up everything.  Personally..this particular iMac is older. Stuck on 10.6.8 --- I'm thinking it's some sort of 64bit/versus 32bit problem. Still, this should be considered a software defect. Apple needs to create a fix. Alternately... yes...I would like a new iMac, but they aren't free so... if anyone wants to upgrade me I won't turn you down.

Again, iTunes only keeps one normal backup, per device. Any other backups listed are backups created from restore points. These are time/date stamped & are not overwritten.

  • ICloud backup not working

I ran the backup last night...it still shows that the latest backup was in December 2012.  I have enough storage left.  Any ideas?

If you get the error "Backup not successful" and you've tried deleting the last backup and trying to back up manually without luck, try the following test:   Go to...
Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>manage Storage, tap your device name in the Backups section, then look under Backup options.  Turn off all apps from backup and then do a manual backup.  If that doesn't work, then this post will not help.  If the backup works, then go back to the app list and turn some on and try another backup.  If successful, keep repeating these steps.  If it fails at some point, then try to zero in on the one app that seems to make the backup fail.  (I had this problem and found one app failing, probably due to a corrupt data file.)
This process will take time, but if a backup works with no app data being used but clearly fails with the original settings, then somewhere in the mix of apps is a "bad" one.

  • Backup not working for File Server

We have System Center 2012 Sp1 installed with Agent Version : 4.1.3453.0

    HI Chris,
    Sharing files using Bluetooth
To share files using Bluetooth, you first need to make sure Bluetooth is turned on, and then use Bluetooth File Exchange to send a file.
    To turn on Bluetooth:
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences and click Bluetooth.
Select the On checkbox. To allow other Bluetooth enabled devices to “discover” your computer and send files, also select the Discoverable checkbox.
Select “Show Bluetooth status in the menu bar” so you can quickly send files and perform other actions using the Bluetooth status menu in the menu bar.
    To send files using Bluetooth:
Choose Send File from the Bluetooth status menu in the menu bar.
If the Bluetooth menu isn’t visible, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Bluetooth, and select “Show Bluetooth status in the menu bar.”
In the window that appears, select the file you want to send and click Send.
Select the device you want to send the file to and click Send.
If you don’t see the device you want to send the file to, make sure the device has Bluetooth turned on and is discoverable.
You do not need File Sharing turned on for Bluetooth technology.
Another way to share files between two Macs is How to use Firewire Target Disk Mode
