Backups not showing up on Air Disk

I have a USB hard drive attached to an Airport Extreme (Gigabit). I deleted the old TM backups that were made when the disk was attached to my Mac directly. I did not rename the volume. If I enter Time Machine, I can only see what is current. No matter where I am looking, TM comes up and changes to the Computer view. If I mount the TM sparse image and browse through it, I can see the backups there, but they never show up in the Time Machine interface. How can I fix that?
It mounts the sparse image when it needs to do a backup. It umounts it when it is done. It never attempts to mount it when I want to browse through it.
Update: I started a backup and let it mount the sparse image. While the backup was in progress, I entered the Time Machine interface. It still only shows what is current.

I have precisely the same problem!
Unfortunately, I have no idea why it is like this.
My time machine was able to browse through previous backups initially. But after I deleted and reset my backups and installed the latest time machine updates, I noticed the behavior changed. For one thing, time machine used to just use a folder, without having to point an image. I can speculate that perhaps the time machine updates changed the backup system to use images, and the time machine program was not modified to reflect this - but I don't really have the means to verify it.
Help, anyone?

  • 1 TB External WD Drive Not Showing Up In Finder/Disk Utility/Terminal

    Hey everyone,
First time posting here so forgive any mistakes. I recently purchased a Late 2013 Macbook Pro Retina, 15-inch, 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7 from Apple. Previously, I had the late 2007 Macbook Pro model until a friend spilled some water on it and corrupted the motherboard. Regardless, I was using a Western Digital 1 TB external hard-drive to keep all my documents and files backed up, manually, alongside the time machine feature built in. (This was not connected at the time of the spill, and was not thereafter, so rule out water damage) During the period between when the old one died, (earlier this year May-2013), I kept the drive safely in storage because I knew I would want to transfer my 100gb music librairy along with my photos and other files when I finally got the new one later that year (was waiting for the hardwell processors to come out for the MBP). Just recently after this purchase I tried to connect the drive to my new MacBook Pro but it was not showing up. I have scowered the online forums for trouble shooting tips and took all the steps to no avail. I have replaced the data-drive cable with a new one, connected it to the wall outlet in case it wasn't drawing enough power from the laptop, among a few other simple tricks, but still it would not show up in either Disk Utility or the terminal command to show all active drives, all that's there is the internal Macintosh HD one. It was a fairly quiet drive-however I do notice there is not much of a 'spin-up' noise or any sound of it begining to work when turned on or plugged in, so I'm worried there might be something wrong with the drive itself. Nonetheless, the power signal continues to flash but still no recognition from the computer that it's there, so I'm certain it's not reading it. I have tried on my other buddys Mac and it is the same situation, as well as my roommates PC (which I figured wouldnt anyway because of how its formatted, but it was worth a shot) I am not sure which avenue to take next as I have all my files and college work that I still need access to on the drive, and would really hate to have to format the drive or anything drastic as such. Possibly there is a part I can buy and replace myself to make it start up and spin again, but I am not sure what that part could be or if there is an easier solution out there.
I would greatly appreciate any information or help on this problem, thank you all for the time and advie.

Clicking from a hard drive is bad.  Does the external drive have an external power supply?  If it does I would use this supply.

  • Latest Time Machine backup not Showing

Here's what I'm trying to do:
Swapping out 320 gb had on a 5,1 MacBook Pro to a 500gb hd. I DON'T have an external enclosure.
I ran another Time Machine backup last night (nov 20) before physically swapping out hard drives ( I do TM backups intermittently). My TM backups are to a FireWire attached external drive, btw, so I get the new drive in the computer, startup while holding Command-R (only works with USB connection I found out) and click on 'restore from the time machine backup'. Under Backups it shows the external drive (we'll call it 'external' )and Time Machine formatted disk image called ''Macbook Pro.tmp' on disk 'external'.
Selecting the 'MacbookPro.tmp' leads to a dialog box of "the backup cannot be opened: if this is a password-protected backup, you entered an incorrect...." in other words I go back and select the OTHER option of 'external'.
THIS gives me some time machine options but this is where my question comes in.
The only options available are from 'August 29' and 'August 23'!  I JUST backed up to Time Machine on November 20! Why is the most recent backup NOT there?
If I went with the 'August 29' restore will it plug in the incremental backups I've done since then?
Please advise. I've looked on pondini.org but couldn't find an answer.

It sounds like you have two sets of backups on that drive.
Were some backups made over a network (ie, while the drive was connected to a Time Capsule, Airport Extreme, or other Mac)?  That's the only way you get a disk image (unless you specifically created one).
The name "MacbookPro.tmp" sounds like the temporary name Time Machine first creates a disk image with, over a network.   That would also explain why it can't be opened, as TM didn't finish creating it, but that doesn't tell us where the backup you ran on 11/20 went.  Are you sure it completed normally?  No error messages, etc.?
Also, did you format the new drive?

  • External hard drive not showing in finder or disk utility

1TB WD external hard drive is not showing in finder sidebar, destop, or disk utility. I have checked and all the preferences are ticked. The disk itself is showing a light and making a whirring sound during start up after being plugged into the power.

Three different external drives, on 2 different MacBook Pros (different ages).  One drive with internal power, 2 through USB.  Also have a new Solid State External Drive and it does work.  The were all working before upgrade to Yosemite.

  • Windows not showing up in Startup Disk

Just updated a 15" Retina to 10.8.3 and also ran the SMC 1.1 update. Now my bootcamp windows partition does not show up in the Startup Disk any more. I can see it in the Finder and I can reboot and hold down option key to boot into Windows, but for some reason it isn't showing up in Startup Disk Preference.

yeah, I had a feeling it might be Tuxera causing it, wanted to see if there was another solution other than uninstalling it.
I tried disabling it in the pref pane and that didn't fix the issue, so I'm assuming it would need to be uninstalled.
As long as I am able to boot into Windows when needed (which isn't very often), I'm not too concerned.  Its a little inconvenient to have to hold Option during startup to do it, but it works.
Whats annoying too is that when using BootCamp control panel in Windows to restart into OSX, it boots into the emergency partition for Lion instead of Lion.  So, guess holding Option at startup is the only option both ways!
    Thanks for the help.

  • Files/folders not showing up with Airport Disk but are there?

I've recently bought the Airport Extreme, I was all excited about Airport Disk but there is a weird, extremly annoying bug.
On my USB hard drive connected using Airport Disk, I have a folder called music. When I open this folder, OS X starts reading the directory and files/folders show up one by one, but then it just all disappears - and the folder shows nothing. In Windows, it shows nothing at all in the folder. However, when I reconnect the drive using USB to my MacBook Pro, all my music is there and I can see all the files.
I have a feeling this is something to do with this:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305040
as I have German and Japanese music files imported by iTunes which are not named in English (ie the filenames are encoded in Japanese etc etc)
Another strange thing is, in Windows, if I type the direct path to a folder (which is inside the supposed empty folder) I will be able to access it.
    What's going on Apple?...
    Anyone else got this issue?...
    Thanks
macbook pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Hi Everyone,
I was experiencing the same. on the XP box it just wouldnt show anything period and on the Mac, the finder would briefly display the contents of the drive before disappearing. Spoke to Tier 2 and they thought I should reformat the drive, since he thought it likely that due to severing the drives connection that the format was corrupt...
I did manage to fix it myself and I'll tell you how. First I hardwired the drive via USB to the Mac. noticed an item called FROM which had no size, no date modified and type was --. I deleted the RECYCLED folder (which results when you delete something from the drive thru XP)
then i hardwired it to the PC. deleted the "FROM" folder which in this case was a file folder, and 237MB approx in size. I also deleted the ".DSStore" and ".Trashes" files. .DSStore is basically the icon cache and .Trashes is when you delete something on the airdisk from the Mac. reconnected the drive and POOF! it worked Problem is now solved.
So to summate, i think in my case it was more the discrepancy between the FROM not showing up as anything on the Mac, versus it being a full fledged folder to windows xp. i just thought i would pass this along...

  • Mail.app time machine backup not showing anything after upgrade.

    Hi,
I have gone from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion, and I have a concern that my Time Machine backup now does not show any of my emails since the upgrade.
Is this by design or has something more sinister occured?
    Gavin.

    Hi,
No, thats the point the only email visible is from after the upgrade a week ago.
My emails on this computer go back over a year, but I cannot seem to see them.

  • IPhone backup not showing up when trying to restore my iPhone 4 from my old 3GS but it is preferences

So I got an iPhone 4 and tried to restore it with my back up from my 3GS but it's not showing up in the drop down menu. The funny thing is my wife got one too and we restored hers just fine. Also when I look in the preferences I can see the backup from my 3GS!  Really confused....

Your Powerbook 6,8 (the 1.5GHz 12" model, correct?) was never shipped with OS X 10.4.6 discs, so you were sold installer discs with it that are specific to a different Powerbook model and can't be used on yours. Contact the seller and ask for the correct discs, but don't hold out too much hope of getting them at this point. The seller probably has no idea how to identify them even if he has them — it's really very hard to do.
What you will probably need is a retail (universal) installer DVD of OS X v. 10.4.3 through 10.4.11 or any version of 10.5.x. Don't buy any disc that has a gray label, nor one that says "Upgrade" or mentions the name of any Mac model on its label.

  • ControlBarContent not showing up in AIR app?

I am building an eBook reader application, and for demonstration purposes, have built it using the controlBarContent spark tag.
I created the application initially as a Flex Project that runs on the Web (Flash Player 10).
I wish to convert it into a Desktop AIR application as a demo to some people. I convert the Web app into an Air application, but when I export it as a release build and install/run the application, the control bar does NOT show up at the top of the screen, where I placed it. The application runs like normal, but the control bar is not visible at all.
Now, this poses quite an issue as my main form of navigation is on that controlBar. I tried explicitly setting the controlBarVisible attribute to true, but still same problem.
Is there any reason why the controlBar shows up fine when I run it in Flex as a Web app, but not when I convert it into and run it as an AIR application?
Possible reasons why (I am only listing things I think may be issues):
    1. I didn't start the application as an AIR app, and the conversion from WEB to AIR causes an issue
    2. AIR doesn't support controlBar.
    3. I messed up setting the controlBarVisible (which I thought was default=true anyways)

    I just thought of something:
Reading the description for the controlBarContent, maybe it's only supposed to work in Panels, and not on the <s:Application> or <s:WindowedApplication> level? Are control bars only meant to be in panels?
Should I go ahead and use an <mx:ControlBar> instead, to display my navigation buttons in the application level?

  • Why does my iPad backup not show up in iTunes?

Everytime I attempt to backup my iPad, the screen on the iPad goes to the Apple logo startup and either holds on that or intermittently comes back w/ the "Sync in Progress" message. I let it go all the way to completion...it appears in iTunes as if alll is normal (albeit slow). When it completes I check iTunes to see if it's available to restore from and it doesn't show on the list. My hard disk has obviously gotten 20 or so GB more full and there's a new backup file in the Mobile Sync library directory. I have scoured the message boards about this particular problem and have tried almost everything suggested. I delete the backup folder. I do a hard reset on the iPad. I have deleted and removed as much as I can from the iPad and gotten about 5GB of space. I upgraded my MBP OS from Leopard to Snow Leopard. Some have mentioned deleting and re-installing iTunes, but I figured the OS refresh basically was the equivalent of that. Any other suggestions? Could I/should I consider backing up to my work MBP or is the problem in the iPad itself? Would love to not have to wipe my iPad and lose music and other original files I don't have backed up. But also am patiently waiting to upgrade to iOS 5!

I think you are going to have to restore as new. Deleting that MobileSync backup folder may have caused the problem. When you delete the backup from iTunes like I was asking about, you are only deleting one particular backup. If you have multiple iDevices - all of the backups would be in that one folder - I think that's how it works.
Read the article - even though the heart and soul of it has been pasted into this link already.
