Backups, time machine and share server screen

I've used Time Machine for point in time server backups, and a firewire external drive with Silverkeeper for cloning.
Firstly, Silverkeeper will not be supported in Lion... so maybe I should be mocing to something else? Intego Backup assistant came with the drive... as well as Silverkeeper.... I have no idea how reliable these are for cloning the drive, nor why I would need both... but no doubt Intego is a light version of something I would need to buy... so the quesiton would become... what should I buy?
Secondly..... Share Server Screen...
When I entered time machine using "Share Server Screen" from my imac (running lion).. time machine seems to run ok.. but the graphic interface isnt really usable... the time line down the side for instance..... does not appear.... and neither does the "today" bar across the bottom.... and of course... none of those star trek style flying stars we have all come to love so much.... So... I'm thinking that time machine is not compatible with "share server screen".... or I have doen something silly.... so which is it? :+)
Gaz

A lot of people prefer and use Carbon Copy Cloner for cloning drives, it is Lion compatible.
The animation (graphics) when you enter Time Machine is quite demanding, I have managed to view it using Timbuktu Pro a remote control package similar to Screen Sharing but it did struggle. Have you tried this more than once to confirm it is not working? A smaller screen resolution might help it cope.

  • Time Capsule both: Time machine and file server

    Hi!
We have 3 macs that has access to a Time Capsule we use just as a file server.
Now, I'll like to do backups of all the data, and I was thinking about using Time Machine in all the computers to backup in Time Capsule.
My question is, can I use Time Capsule as both? With Time Machine and also as a file server?
    Thanks,
    Júlia

Time Machine can be used to backup your Macs to the Time Capsule. You set this up on each Mac by opening System Preferences (gear icon) on the dock and then opening Time Machine to select the Time Capsule as the destination for backups.
Time Machine will keep separate files for each Mac on the Time Capsule and your regular files on the TC will be left alone. Ideally, Time Machine needs about twice as much space for each Mac to allow for a good history of future backups.
Backup each Mac one at a time since the first backup will copy everything from the Mac over.
Things will go 3-5 times faster if you connect the Mac to the Time Capsule using an Ethernet cable for this procedure.
Once the "master" backup is completed for each, you can switch back to wireless to backup incremental changes since these will only take a few minutes on average.
As you know, Time Machine cannot be used to backup the regular files that you already have on the Time Capsule disk. If you need to backup these files, post back for a few suggestions on applications that can handle this task.

  • HT201250 How do you add an external Hard drive to time machine and share on network?

How do you add an external Hard drive to time capsule and share it on local network?
    Lee

Ensure it's formatted as Mac OS Extended, FAT16, or FAT32, connect it to a self-powered hub, and plug it into the Time Capsule's USB port. If the drive is Ethernet and not USB, ignore everything else and just plug it in.

  • Time Machine and  Shares

Hello, I have a 2 computer, a G5 (my personal mac) and a iMac (family computer) setup over a gigabit lan. I have a 1.5TB hard drive attached to my G5 via FW800. I would like to use this as the time machine backup disk. The G5 is already set up to use it since it's physically attached.
How I have been accomplishing this on the imac is mount the drive via AFP and select it as the backup disk through the time machine system preferences window. Since I store other data, backup mostly, on this 1.5TB drive my current solution is not a very secure one. The drive mounts to the desktop any anyone on the iMac can brows it's contents unrestricted. I've unchecked (show these items on the Desktop:) "connected servers" in the Finder Preferences windows to obscure this share.
I tried creating a shared folder on this drive for the iMac to use. But I can't select the share in the TM preference window. I assume this is because if the invisible TM files in the root of the drive. I've been testing what works and what does not, Drives seem to work fine, shared folders within the same drives do not. shared disk images (iDisk) does work.
So my question is how do I securely use my 1.5TB drive for TimeMachine on iMac?
    Thank you!

See #22 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
I've not tried this in the type of configuration you have, but I think you want separate partitions for each Mac's backups, and a third one for the "other" data. Then use step (b) in the yellow box to grant access only to the desired user(s) for each partition.

  • New user needs help with time machine and mac server.

I am a new mac user and got a new mac mini running server.  I have time machine enabled on the server and a back up folder created.  My macbook will not see the server when trying to set up time machine from the macbook.  What am I missing?  Thanks.

Unfortunately even though Apple had touted the AEBS USB2 HD use with TimeMachine (TM) they pulled it from the Leopard TM feature list about 1 week before releasing Leopard GNBuild 9A581.
At this time Apple does not support use of the AEBS USB HD for use TM.
I strongly suspect we will see this feature return in one of the next two updates Apple releases for Leopard.
In the meantime be patient and I don't recommend you use a hack to circumvent the current TM limitation.

  • Time Machine and Leopard Server

I'm trying to verify the Time Machine works on Leopard Server sufficiently enough to be a reasonable backup vehicle for the Leopard Server to an external backup drive, for example.
I have read many posts where Leopard Server can act as a Time Machine Server for workstations, but my main interest is in using Time Machine, running on the Leopard Server to back up that Server.
My guess is that it will?
Thanks in advance for everyone's input.

Timemachine is not supported for "ADVANCED" Server set up but the SIMPLER setups YES. There are also settings for backing up network computers as well as backing up the server.
Supposed in Advanced not all system files are backed up. There are a number of threads regarding this in the Server section of the discussions.

  • I deleted a contact from my phone and it synced with all my other devices including my Mac. However, I have setup time machine and have many previous backups. Can I open or use a file in back ups to get my contact back? Where and which one? Thanks!

    Its all in the question.
I have backups from months ago.
And ICLOUD deleted my contact from others devices.

Bring the Contacts window forward, then enter Time Machine and scroll back to a snapshot that includes the contacts you want to restore. Select the contacts and click the Restore button in the lower right corner of the screen.
If you don't have a Time Machine backup, but your contacts are all on iCloud and haven't been overwritten, then you can recover them by following the instructions on this page. Double-click the downloaded file to import it into Contacts. This procedure will not work if you've synced an empty Contacts database to iCloud.

  • Interaction of Time Machine and cloned backups.

I am not sure how TM works so perhaps someone can explain what is going on here. I use TM to back-up my internal disk plus external firewire and external USB drives. The TM drive is a dedicated 1TB Lacie Firewire. In addition I keep a clone of my start-up drive (CarbonCopyCloner - CCC) on a weekly basis.
Everything works swimingly but here's the question: I recently had to restore the start-up drive after a crash by restarting and restoring from the clone. That worked OK but then TM, on its next iteration, copied the whole drive (100GB) even though the vast majority of files were the same and unchanged. Is this normal behaviour? If so, I will be using up my TM filespace PDQ.

I found this http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=4387985 which says:
"Well thank me later I got it working fellas. It was there in front of our faces with the exception of doing a chown and chmod.
Someone else please confirm I will post steps.
    1) disconnect airport disk and plug into computer as a USB drive directly.
    2) Set up time machine to use this volume.
    3) In terminal cd to volume "cd /Volume/HDD"
    4) In terminal "touch .com.apple.timemachine.supported" this will create an invisible file.
    5) In terminal "sudo chown root:admin .com.apple.timemachine.supported"
    6) In terminal "sudo chmod 1775 .com.apple.timemachine.supported"
    7) In terminal "ls -l -a" the .com.apple.timemachine.supported file should be -rwxrwxr-t
    8) eject disk, unplug from mac, plug into Airport.
    9) mount at mac using connect to server in finder (command k) and afp://airportname.local./HDname
    10) see if time machine now sees the drive and tries to use it."
    Also, this http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=4388264
    " A simpler method....
I also got Time Machine working over AEBS but with a much simpler method.
    1. Connect your USB disk directly to the Mac
    2. Set up Time Machine and let your initial backup run
    3. Eject the disk and connect to the AEBS
    4. You need to 'touch' the disk by opening it in Finder, then Time Machine realises where it is and carries on.
Works for me on my iMac (wired) and Macbook (wireless to AEBS) - TM keeps the backups tidily with separate directories for each machine.
Still have an issue with my Macbook - it doesn't see the disks after sleeping.
Obviously Apple need to fix this - it shouldn't need me to view the disk each time so that TM can see it, and it should enable direct access to new disks via AEBS."

I have an older macbook pro and the hard drive is starting to go (making loud noises). i tried to back up to an external hard drive (my passport essential se) using time machine and the computer keeps shutting down. the same thing happens when just trying to save my pictures from iphoto to a flash drive. suggestions to complete backup please?

Sounds like you'll need to access that drive while it is not booted. You need to replace it anyway, so do that, then one way or another (ext enclusure, et), access it and copy files.
If you keep trying to boot it, you might kill it for good and not get your files, so just swap it out first.

  • Can time machine and carbon copy cloner use the same backup drive?

Can time machine and CCC use the same esata backup drive?

Yes, but you will need to first partition the drive so that TM and CCC will backup to their own respective volumes. This way the CCC volume can accommodate a bootable clone.
Be sure the TM volume has adequate space. A TM backup volume should have about twice the capacity of the volume it backs up.

  • Can i use my time capsule to wirelessly backup my macbook and its external hard drive, which up until now was it's time machine and storage? How?

Can i use my time capsule to wirelessly backup my macbook and its external hard drive, which up until now was it's time machine and storage? How?

The external drive must be connected to the Mac using either USB or FireWire
You must remove the external hard drive from the list of items that are "excluded" from backups in Time Machine Preferences.
    Here's how:
Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock)
    Open Time Machine
    Click Options
Look for the name of the hard drive in the list of "excluded" items and click on it to highlight it
Click the -- (minus) button at the bottom of the list to remove the hard drive from the list of "excluded" items....so it will now be backed up
Strongly recommend that you do the first backup using Ethenret from your computer to the Time Capsule since the entire contents of the external drive will be copied on the first pass. Ethernet will be 3-5 faster than wireless.
Once you have the first backup done, you can use wireless for subsequent backups since they will nornally be much smaller....unless you add large files to the external drive.

  • Backup fail on Time Machine and My Passport for Mac on Yosemite

Cannot seem to get Time Machine to do a full backup of my NEW My Passport for Mac.
    I've:
    - Updated firmware on WD external drive (and formatted correctly for Apple)
    - Updated to latest IOS 10.10.3 (Yosemite)
    - Verified and repaired Mac HD via iOS Disk Utility and the WD Drive Utility (no issues found on either)
Error message continues to be "Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to My Passport for Mac. An error occurred while copying files. The problem may be temporary. If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk."
I'm backing up about 250 GB and have done this numerous times on my Passport for Mac. Everything SEEMS to be fine during backup, until after about 2-3 hours, into a 4-hour backup, the error message appears without any error codes.
Does anyone have any input?  I don't think it is on the WD side.  Anyone know if there an issue with Time Machine and this external drive?  Help!
    Thanks,
    Dave
