Backups/Transfers: why doesn't iBook simply mount up via FireWire?

In backing up, I can turn on my external FW drive and boop, there it appears on my iMac desktop. No problem.
To transfer files to/from my iBook, though, this doesn't work (at least not so far). I have to shut down either machine, connect the cables, and start one in Target mode. Fine -- can do.
But WHY doesn't one Mac simply mount up on another's desktop via FW, as the external drive does? Or can it do it by changing a setting somewhere? Can anyone point out a setting or preference that will let me do this?
Thanks,
cb

I began to perform the procedure that you suggested this evening with some strange results. I started my iMac in target disc mode, tiger dvd preloaded and firewire cable connected to the iBook and iMac. The iMac chimed and began to boot up but there was no display. I shut down the iMac with the power button and then noticed that the iBook had already shut down on its own. I removed the firewire cable, restarted the iMac several more times and even disconnected the power and let it rest for an hour but there is still no display. What could have happened? Is there possibly a short in the iBook that cooked my iMac? I would appreciate any ideas at this point.
Thanks,
Randy

    why doesn't the "zoom in/out" feature by pinching the trackpad on my mac work anymore with firefox? It worked about a month ago, and still works on Safari.

    Some gestures have been removed in Firefox 4 and later.
    You can restore the zoom feature by changing the values of the related prefs on the <b>about:config</b> page.
    browser.gesture.pinch.in -> <b>cmd_fullZoomReduce</b>
    browser.gesture.pinch.in.shift -> <b>cmd_fullZoomReset</b>
    browser.gesture.pinch.out -> <b>cmd_fullZoomEnlarge</b>
    browser.gesture.pinch.out.shift -> <b>cmd_fullZoomReset</b>
    browser.gesture.pinch.latched -> <b>false</b>
    To open the <i>about:config</i> page, type <b>about:config</b> in the location (address) bar and press the "<i>Enter</i>" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.<br />
    If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.<br />
    *Use the Filter bar at to top of the about:config page to locate a preference more easily.
    *Preferences that have been modified show as bold(user set).

  • Transferring Data from old iMac to new iMac via Firewire

    I am having difficulty transferring data from my old iMac to my new iMac via firewire. Per the instructions contained in migration assistant, when I hold down the letter "T" key during startup of the "old" mac the firewire symbol does not appear. Given that the firewire symbol does not appear I am unable to proceed with the transfer. Of note, my new Mac is the '09 24" iMac and my old iMac is the early 2006 model with the 17" screen. Incidentally, I am using the following cable contained in the attached link along with the adaptor (400) with respect to my old iMac.

    Can anyone help?

    Hi Todd
    Not sure why that wouldn't work, but it could be that cable and adapter setup as the Early Core Duo only supports firewire 400.
    You should try a 9 to 6 Pin Bilingual FireWire Cable:

  • Why doesn't my Superdrive mount DVDs?

    My late 2009 iMac's internal DVD started to ignore DVD's with content a few months ago. Insert a DVD and it sounds like it is trying to read it but then ejects it with no message. It still mounts CDs and blank DVDs but not DVDs with content. I can burn DVDs using Toast. I have a second external USB DVD recorder that reads the DVDs fine so it is probably not a system OS issue. Anyone have a clue?

  • Why doesn't iBooks appear in iTunes v11.1.3

    I just purchased a new iMac 27" and installed the newest version of iTunes 11.1.3 (8) The top line does not show a listing for Books. I had twenty books on my old MacBook Pro/iTunes/iPhone.  On my new iMac there are just the headings of [ Summary, Apps, Tones, Music, Movies, Tv Shows, Photos ].  No heading or anything for Books. Would like to be able to add / delete books again.  Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

    Not sure what happened.  But I went to my iMac used the new app from Maverics named iBooks. Added to library 1 book.  Then went to iTunes and the heading Books now appeared at the end of the top line I did a sync and the book in iMac iBooks was synched to my iPhone.

  • Why doesn't iBook collections transfer from iPad to iBooks in Maverick?

    On my iPad I have made all my own collektions of books and PDFs but when i open iBooks on my Mac I apparantly have to redo them all again - there is only the 3 standard collections - books, pdfs and bought? Is there a way to sync all these and if not - do we then manually have to add a new book to a specific collection on each seperate device we have - mac. iPhone and iPad?

    I have the same issue... In fact, I posted a similar question on this forum prior to reading yours. It appears as though each COLLECTION (25 of them) I've created on my iPad made its way into iBooks on my OS X Maverick iMac, but many of them are empty or are missing some of the entries. I would really like to know how to fix this.

  • To sort through the every increasing number of apps, why doesn't Apple simply create more granularity in category descriptions for apps? i.e. instead of "financial", there could be 'budget', 'investment', 'bookkeeping', 'analysis', 'trade tools', etc.

    Question says it all.

    One thing I learned in high tech, was innovation often was so counter intuitive, one didn't think of it until presented with some sort of stimulus or trigger. Such as, an app for sale, description of function/process, etc. Thus, how do I know I want to search for something, if the idea hasn't completely jelled in my mind? Ergo, it would be nice to browse a greater variety of categories; that would enable a greater number of entrepraneurs to display their innovative wares.

  • Transferring files from PowerBook G4 to MacBook Pro via Firewire

    Just got my new MacBook Pro Yesterday! Yay! I was about to transfer my files from old computer when I found, hmm...that firewire port looks different! Went to office max and bought a new firewire cable that looked like it should work, but it didn't. When I checked the apple website there were about 5 different firewire cables. Which one do I need? I run my offices website from my old computer, which no longer has a working monitor (thanks to my 8 month old german shepherd). So until I get my files transferred, I can't update my site! Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Click here for an example of the needed cable.

  • Transferring files from MacBook Pro to new iMac via Firewire

    Hi guys
    My MacBook Pro is seriously on its way out and I would like to transfer my music files, work documents, photographs, videos etc. onto my brand new iMac and the best way to do this I would think would be to link the two up via Firewire. The MacBook Pro is no longer accepting my external hard drive and fails during during DVD's, so those options are out.
    So I was wondering if someone could advise me on what type of Firewire cable to get. As far as I'm aware I didn't get one with either the MacBook Pro or the new iMac, so I think a purchase is necessary however, I've spotted that there are different kinds with different ends, some which have 6-pin, 8-pin and 9-pin and I have no idea what to get. Could someone advise me on what would be the best item to get for this situation?
    My MacBook Pro is one that was the model before the black keyboards came back in, and the iMac is the brand new one at 21".
    Thanks for your help guys.
    Steve.

    Hi
    FireWire 800 / FW800 / IEEE 1394b uses a 9-pin connector for both the imac and the macbook pro.
    good luck.

  • RE: G3 iBook transfer via firewire to MBP...questions

    hello everyone,
    forgive me if this is the wrong section...but can someone help me with this...
    i have transfered all my necessary files from my iBook to my MBP (via firewire)but now i can not get my old entrouge to over ride/replace the one on my MBP. i did remove the new trial version of microsoft office before this and i installed my copy. my complete address book has been lost...I still have the iBook for a few more days until I sort this whole thing out. all of my other files made the transition.
    your suggestions, tips and advice is appreciated.
    Jill

    The very first model G4 towers were known as the "PCI Graphics G4" and they are not capable of starting up in "target" mode. The first model G4 tower that could was the "AGP Graphics G4" (the second model). If you have a PCI Graphics G4 (the logic board was based on the logic board of the Blue & White G3 which was not capable of "target" mode), then you won't be able to go that way. However, your PCI Graphic G4 tower should still recognize your iBook's hard drive in FireWire Target Disk Mode. The only requirement is that the "host" Mac have a FireWire port and a minimum of FireWire 2.3.3 installed (Mac OS 8.6, any version of OS X will host). Check out Knowledge Base Article #58583. So, you could move the files manually, but the Migration Assistant won't be able to help with a PCI Graphics G4.

  • HT1414 I'm trying to restore from an earlier backup but my iphone only shows the most recent. I'm on Windows Vista and found the backup folder. If I delete the recent files, will it force the iPhone to backup from the next older file?  Why doesn't it show

    I'm trying to recover a file and the app company said to restore from an earlier backup.  My iPhone only shows the most recent backup.  I've been searching the net for answers - I found the back up file and date sorted them (over 6mb of files).  How can I get my iPhone to restore from an earlier backup?
    I am on Windows Vista so I don't have Time Machine.
    I have backed up the backup folder so if I mess it up, I have it in a separate place.
    Can I just delete all the files with todays date in that backup folder and have it forced to the next oldest date?
    Why doesn't the iPhone show a list of the least several backups.
    Info:
    iPhone 4S
    Software version  5.1.1
    Backed up to computer through iTunes (not iCloud)

    As you backup the iPhone in iTunes, it overwrites the last backup. Files are kept as they are changed, so that would explain how you get different dates in your backup folder. The only backups that are saved and not overwritten are the ones done just prior to a restore. You do have the option to go back in time on a Windows computer, however depending on the last time you set a restore point in Windows, it could be back further than you are willing to go.

    Googling shows that you have the 1G iPod.  For apps you need at least iOS 2. The iG can go as far os 3.1.3 that you get here:
    Purchasing iOS 3.1 Software Update for iPod touch (1st generation)
    Just be aware that there are presently not that many apps that work with a 1G with iOS 3.1.3

  • Why doesn't an external drive mount?

    I am trying to do backup, and the external drive won't mount. I bought a SATA 250GB drive and attached it to the Powerbook using the USB port. The light shows up on the enclosure but there is no hard drive that appears on the desktop. Also it doesn't show up on Disk Utility.
    Is it because this is the wrong sort of drive?
    I connected the external drive to the MacBook Air to see if it would mount there and it doesn't show up there either on the desktop.

    Is this a bus-powered USB drive? If so, it's demanding too much power, and the USB port can't meet the demand. You'll need to provide it with an AC power supply, if it can be so equipped, or plug it into an AC-powered USB hub instead of directly into the computer.
