Backups vanished after network change

Have been successfully backing up from iMac and MBA since August.
Last night decided to put the TC and AirportExpress on their own N network as B/G starting to get very slow.
First time both iMac and MBA went to backup, they wanted to create completely from scratch!??
Now if I try and look at TC I see a folder marked 'Shared' with SparseBundles in.
No MAC addresses have changed, neither have the computer names.
Even if i put them back on the B\G still no joy
I really dont want the pain of starting again, and really would like the old backups back.
Any ideas pleae?

rob,
How do you know they were starting new full backups rather than simply larger-than-usual incremental backups?
Like you, I'm running a dual network. However, I can switch my the Mac I'm on now back and forth between the two networks and still successfully perform incremental backups to the same disk image. So something is not right in your case. First try this...
*Delete The Time Machine Preference .plist*
Go to --> Macintosh HD / Library / Preferences (Note: NOT Home / Library / Preferences).
Drag the .plist file labeled,
com.apple.TimeMachine.plist
to the root level of your Macs’ hard drive.
Reboot your computer.
This .plist file is automatically recreated at startup if it is missing.
Now try choosing the external HD in the TM Prefs for backup.
Initiate a backup and then observe if the information regarding the backup is retained in the TM Prefs pane.
Let us know if this helped resolve your issue.
Cheers!

  • No internet access for ~10min after network change

For access reasons I need to switch between a Wifi and Cable network to access different systems and when changing between certain networks I'm unable to access any web pages for around 10min through Firefox though I can in other browsers.
    Steps to recreate.
    1. Start with Wifi off and connected to cabled network
    2. Join Wifi network which in case it matters is similar to a hotel wifi system and requires a browser based login after connecting.
    3. In Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network Connections (Win 7) I disable the LAN connection forcing the Wifi connection.
    4. Firefox continues to work as normal
    5. Turn Wifi off.
    6. In Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network Connections enable the LAN connection to reconnect to the cabled network
(same issue with 5. and 6. reversed)
    7. Firefox can't access web sites but other browsers can
    8. Wait ~10min
    9. Firefox can access web sites as normal.
Let me know if there is any other information that will help debug.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
The reason for switching was more for context than the source of the issue. Both are work networks, via the cable is the main corporate network and the WiFi is the guest network neither of which I have and admin access to.
So to simplify I can access google via FF both on the cable and WiFi networks but not for the 10min period after switching back from WiFi to cable (were I can't access anything). I can however access google from other browser's during this time. So I don't think there's anything blocking me and the issue seems localized to FF itself (more than happy to be proven wrong if it solves it though).

  • Skype drops connection and cannot reconnect after network change

Whenever I switch between wifi and cable or if I enable my VPN, the skype connection drops and does not reconnect. The problem is not the VPN though because when on VPN I can Quit Skype, and reopen it and then it will connect. The same applies when switching between wifi and cable. Having to quit and restart skype everytime I switch really sucks, its supposed to be more "rugged" i would think.

    Besed wrote:
techfreak, many words, but nothing to say about the issue and solution. With all respect.
Guys tell you that when they quit Skype and start it again, it connects well! It means nothing to do with local IT configuration. The problem started few months ago. There is a proxy configuration for VPN defined in Skype settings and it always worked fine, switching connection accordingly to the network. Now it loses connection when we switch between VPN and regular network and vice versa. The Skype restart is required each time to restore connection and it is REALY annoying.
If you claimed it worked differently before what changed on your end?  Does it behave differently in an older version of Skype (harder to test since they're discontinuing older versions)?  Most people who connect to a VPN use a VPN client to do so like the Windows  PPTP VPN, Cisco VPN client, etc..   People use varying VPN servers and VPN client versions and they can behave differently.   If users have a Proxy server they define that in the Proxy configuration.  I've personally never attempted authenticating to a VPN server using the Skype's proxy configuration in connection settings.   Split-tunneling is one setting that affects how traffic is handled and can produce a different result.  I wish I could tell you there is one solution to your problem.  If  you determine the process differed in a earlier release, it would be helpful to post the last release it behaved in the fashion you are accustomed to. A contact of mine uses a VPN connection and toggles it on and off especially when we have bandwidth related issue.  That does disrupt his Skype connection momentarily but he hasn't had to ever completely exit Skype.  However he relies on the VPN client and does not place that authentication information in the proxy configuration.

Receiving error updating creative cloud after firewall changes to our network.
We have an end user that is trying to update through the creative cloud application.  We have tried track down what is being blocked but have hit a dead end.
When the Creative Cloud Software tries to call out we are seeing a connection attempt to https://ops:443/ims/token/v1
I have researched and the only reference to IMS for Adobe I was able to locate was the IMSService.  This appears to be an authentication service.  The issue is that "ops" is not a valid domain.
This issue only appears to affect the Creative Cloud Software as I was able to update a test machine with Creative Cloud through the Adobe Application Manager.
The user's system and our test system are running OS X Yosemite

  • ML loses network backup disk after reboot or sleep

I have two laptops using time machine to backup over the local network to a disk directly connected to a desktop mac.  The desktop also backs up to the same disk quite successfully.   Since upgradeing everything to Mountain Lion (10.8.1) the laptops keep losing access to the backup disk after sleeping or rebooting. Interestingly, they can autmatically find the backup IF I "enter time machine".  But they never find it unless, after sleeping, I reselect the disk in the time machine preferences.

  • Every time there's a power cut or I turn off my router, my Macbook doesn't detect the network and doesn't accept the password. Finally, after many, many attempts at solving with 'diagnostics', rebooting...the 'network changes' detected message shows.

How can I get it to look for a network change - or find the change immediately - and speed up the process? Is there really a change? This has really frustrated me many, many times.
I'm using 10.6.8 and see there's an update that supposedly helps airport problems but that people hatve problems with it. I'm having enough problems without those too!
    Thank you for any ideas.

  • Had my hard drive replaced and I've restored from TimeMachine backup. I have changed my username and now I can't access my old backups on my TimeMachine hard drive

I've recently had my hard drive replaced in the Apple Store.
I used time machine to backup and after I got my mac back with the new hard drive I restored all my files which are now on my computer and I can access it with no problems.
The problem is that I've changed my username (admin) and when I enter time machine, I can't access the backups of my old hard drive which is really frustrating.
A red negative sign appears on most folders. Also in macintosh HD/users there is a folder named with my old username and I get the same red negative sign in the folders.
Any idea what can be done about this?
If you need more info just ask.
    Thanks in advance

Turn Time Machine OFF temporarily in its preference pane. Leave the window open.
Navigate in the Finder to your backup disk, and then to the folder named "Backups.backupdb" at the top level of the volume. If you back up over a network, you'll first have to mount the disk image file containing your backups by double-clicking it. Descend into the folder until you see the snapshots, which are represented by folders with a name that begins with the date of the snapshot. Find the one you want to restore from. There's a link named "Latest" representing the most recent snapshot. Use that one, if possible. Otherwise, you'll have to remember the date of the snapshot you choose.
Inside the snapshot folder is a folder hierarchy like the one on the source disk. Find one of the items you can't restore and select it. Open the Info dialog for the selected item. In the Sharing & Permissions section, you may see an entry in the access list that shows "Fetching…" in the Name column. If so, click the lock icon in the lower right corner of the dialog and authenticate. Then delete the "Fetching…" item from the icon list. Click the gear icon below the list and select Apply to enclosed items from the popup menu.
Now you should be able either to copy the item in the Finder or to restore it in the time-travel view. If you use the time-travel view, be sure to select the snapshot you just modified. If successful, repeat the operation with the other items you were unable to restore. You can select multiple items in the Finder and open a single Info dialog for all of them by pressing the key combination option-command-I.
When you're done, turn TM back ON and close its preference pane.

  • Time Machine forces a Full backup  (173GB) after System restore.

    Hi,
Just restored my system from the latest backup in Time Capsule. Now Time Machine want to backup the whole disk again (173GB) although the changes between the current status and the latest backup should be minimal.
Is this the normal behavior?, I would rather avoid the full back up if there any way to do it.
These are the logs. First it says that the "Event Store UUIDs don't match". I'm not sure this is really normal, because I didn't swap hard drives or anything so I assume that the Event Store UUIDs should match.
Then it says that the size of the backup is 173.86 GB.

Not quite the same problem, as your full backup wasn't the first one after a full restore. Whether it's related or not is anybody's guess.
Click here to download the +Time Machine Buddy+ widget. It shows the messages from your logs for one TM backup run at a time, in a small window. Navigate to the backup in question, then copy and post all the messages here. They may contain a clue.

  • Windows Vista won't connect after security change

I have an AirPort Extreme base station, to which we connect using an iMac, PowerBook G4 and a Windows Vista laptop. I used to have it set to WEP, but changed it to WPA for the increased security. After the change, my PowerBook and iMac are connecting just fine, but my wife's Vista machine has been nothing but headaches. It will sometimes connect, after a bit of fighting with it, but not reliably or quickly. At the moment, it says that it is connected with local and internet access, but I can't actually access anything on the internet, and diagnosing the problem in Vista reports that a wireless network cannot be found (despite the fact that it simultaneously reports that it is connected to one).
I know squat about Windows -- I'm a Mac guy. Anybody know how to help me fix this?
    Thanks in advance!

No answers, but the problem seems to have disappeared. Man, I'm starting to realize how fortunate I am to have been using Macs for the last 23 years. I think Vista is going to be a very good thing for Apple! There's nothing like actually using Vista to make one want to flee screaming and never look back...

  • Use a previous TM back-up after machine change

I try to read a lot on this subject but I didn't find really an easy way to re-use a my previous TM backup. I've changed my computer due to an hardware issue and TM created a new backup.
I read some tips valid with 10.5 with MAC adress change but terminal command doesn't work
I read some tips about 10.6 and option at the first backup but it didn't appear.
Well, is there any solution to use my previous TM backup on an Imac 21.5 with 10.6.2 instead of the new MyMac 1.sparebundle created by TM?
I really want to browse my history without opening another backup through TM menu..

Yes. A new Mac will be backed-up in it's entirety. It's a different Mac, with different hardware, etc. You cannot prevent it.
I read some tips valid with 10.5 with MAC adress change but terminal command doesn't work
Good. That is for the same physical Mac with a new logic board, not a physically different Mac.
I read some tips about 10.6 and option at the first backup but it didn't appear.
You should have gotten the "re-use" prompt, per #B5 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum. But that won't prevent a new backup of the new Mac.
That is, unless you backed the old Mac up to a disk attached directly, and have now changed to using the same disk on a network location. In that case, the old backups are in a Backups.backupdb folder, not a sparse bundle.
Well, is there any solution to use my previous TM backup on an Imac 21.5 with 10.6.2 instead of the new MyMac 1.sparebundle created by TM?
    No.
I really want to browse my history without opening another backup through TM menu..
Do you mean the Browse option? That's the only way. Also note that when your Time Capsule (or whatever network destination you're using) gets full, Time Machine will not delete old backups from the old Mac when it needs room; it will delete the oldest backups in the new set, instead.
So you'll have to manage that space yourself; delete individual backups via the procedure in #12 of the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.

  • Message "Backup disk identification has changed since the last copy"

    Hello!
I have MD033 Time Capsule and my iMac 2012 and MacBook Pro connected to it. Time Machine is set to backup @ this disk.
Every once in a while I get the message you see in attach on my machines. Approximately it means "Your backup disk identificator has changed since the last backup (Possible reason the disk was changed or erased since the last backup or someone is trying to make you make aт illegal backup not on your disk "
I get this message from time to time both on iMac and MacBook but not simulateoneously. Once in a week or a month.
I already reinstalled anew systems on my machines and even replaced time capsule itself to the same model (absolutely new, factory sealed), not even mentioning formatting its disk a dozen times and resetting TC.
Does someone have same problem? Russian support couldn't help and directs me to a repair. But I really doubt that BOTH MacBook Pro and iMac have EXACTLY the same problem with TC. Everything seems as it is a software problem with some of the program

    frood42frood42 wrote:
today, my MacBook shows a Message "The identity of the backup disk has changed since the previous backup."
    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
It may not show anything useful, but try this: Disconnect all external and network volumes. In the Finder invoke the menu option Go > Go to Folder. In the resulting field type "/Volumes" (without the quotes) and click "Go". In the resulting window you should only see entries for any internal volumes. If you see anything else, particularly an item with the same name as your Time Machine volume, you may have the problem described in this article:
    http://db.tidbits.com/article/9620
You should trash any such things. The way to prevent this in the future is to prevent any process from running that would write to external volumes that aren't mounted. For Time Machine, turn it off, then when you want to back up, mount the Time Machine volume and choose "Back Up Now" from the Time Machine menu item.

I have selcted the "Data Use in Home Network"  to be "Always Ask".
But i have no Idea why this option changes back to "Automatic". Some times i could not even browse GPRS data after this change happens in my N8. I have to end up restarting the Phone...
Is there a log which indicates why this is happening??...does any log show if some error happend from the phone internally??

Any clue on this..any one had the same problem??

Not exactly but I don't seem to be able to stop it connecting to the network. Even with both these settings set to always ask and switch to wireless set as manual the phone connects to whatever network is there without me asking and stays connected.

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Sounds like you are not able to connect to a Wi-Fi network with your iPad. This article has a section for Unable to connect to a Wi-Fi network and the second article is the recommended network settings. If after these it still has the same issue you may want to restore the device to factory settings.

  • Network Change Detected

At a seemingly-random point either a web page won't load (Safari tells me I am not connected to the Internet), or my email tells me it is having problems getting to the server. However, the 'bars' in my menubar show that I am still logged onto my home network and I still have a connection and a strong-enough signal. The rest of my family is still online and my iPhone is showing that it's online on the wireless connection.
Safari offers to run Network Diagnostics: I do that, and it comes to a point where it says: "Network Change Detected: Your network configuration has changed. Click OK to proceed to the next step."
When I do that, and Continue (without changing the options that the dialog is showing me); it completes and tells me my connection is fine, which it then is. After that I can go online, retrieve/send email, etc. ... until the next time (usually a few minutes later)
My OS is OSX 10.6.4 and my version of safari is 5.0 (6533.16). I've got a linksys router with a password. Is there anything that I can do to my computer or my router to fix this?

I'm sorry to bump this, but I really wish someone could shed some light on the situation. I realize now that it's probably not a problem with my MacBook and instead with my router, but if anyone has any idea why a router would all of a sudden stop letting wireless computers connect to the internet I would love your input. Thank you.
