Backward cloning from a G5 to a G4

I am a classroom video teacher with a host of various Mac's to maintain. The current problem is the loss of the system drive in an older G4. I would like to clone using carbon copy from my G5 dual core to the G4. A search shows many people going the other way but no advise on going backward.
Both machines are running panther.
If necesary I can clone from an identical G4 but the software is not as current as the G5.
Thanks for any advise

People probably buy new computers and want to keep the files.
Try using NetRestore and setup a master image to push out to others, or for replacement.
As long as you are using retail OS X, and everyone is PPC, you should be fine.
I think now is an excellent time to upgrade to Tiger. Would be nice if Apple had some 10.4.9 DVDs, it is complete and I would say runs better than Panther, and a lot of software now requires 10.4.4+.

  • Backward compatibility from DS12.1 to 11.7.2.3

    Hi,
Customer is checking whether we can support backward downgrading from DS12.1 to 11.7. I know the chance to support it is very slim. But I just want to seek for any possibility and the impact of it if possible.
    thanks and regards
    nora

No you cannot. It is not supported. And if the ATL code is different, the older version will not understand it.
Having said that, if you did not use any new transforms and the ATL did not change, you might be lucky. For example from 12.1 to 11.7 it should work - if no new transform was used as said. Just edit the ATL and remove/change the line with the ATL version. If the import works..............
In 12.2 the ATL will be slightly different, there it would not work (I believe).

  • Server detected a backward timestamp from 1973406 to 0 in file

    In my core.log file I'm receiving these error messages;
Server detected a backward timestamp from 1973406 to 0 in file:C:\FMSHOME\applications\livepkgr\streams\_definst_\bbc1
Server detected a backward timestamp from 1973406 to 0 in file:C:\FMSHOME\applications\livepkgr\streams\_definst_\bbc2
Is this an issue caused by the encoder? I'm using a Viewcast Niagara to encode and not the FMLE. These are the only settings I have available.
I'm using all default settings on the FMS 4.5 server.
    Thanks,
    Dave

I'm checking again with Viewcast support .I don't see how I can check whether ATC is enabled on the encoder. Since it's a portable contained streaming appliance.
The last response I got from them was.
"Does this happen every time or only when you restart the profile shortly after stopping it? As a rule time codes are always an off set from 0. However, it does not matter what the time code is. It just matters that the server doesn't get an out of sequence time code. So if you stop an encoder and then start it too quickly you can send a time code to the server before the server has completely torn down the previous stream. You should wait several seconds before restarting a stream."

  • How do I remove stray digital images of backward slashes from my laptop screen?

How do I remove a stray digital image of a backward slash from my computer screen?

I don't know if it's myself here Allen, but these look like marks relating to the LCD panel itself.
I've seen this on iBooks which have small marks. They are not dead pixels as such but darken spots cast in a  very small line. When I've seen this before it's been due to pen pointers or object witch have been used to point at the screen. Normally people have used these object to touch the screen, which has left these very small marks.
It seem to be common on earlier iBook's and PowerBook, maybe due to the type of LCD panel they use.
I maybe wrong here, but thought it might be worth mentioning.

  • Facing issue after the the target instance is cloned from production

    Hi All ,
We have an oracle configurator developer(source) and transaction instance(target) instances. The target instance is recently cloned from production.
We have made the bom synch between the source and target instances. After making the BOM synch we have deleted all the publication data in cz_model_publications. create a new publication from source to target and published the data.
After successful publication we have run the "Synchronize cloned target" concurrent program as well. Once we are trying to access configurator we are getting the below error . Please help me in resolving this issue as its a critical one in our project.

  • How do I restore time machine alias files cloned from broken hard drive

My external hard drive broke (a tiny transistor broke off after the drive fell two feet to the floor) so I purchased a new one and had the Geek Squad clone what was on my old hard drive onto my new one. I was using Time Machine to backup my files. My external hard drive had a much larger capacity than my macbook pro, so I deleted a number of the files saved on my Macbook Pro, knowing that I could access my files whenever I plugged my ext. hard drive in.
After plugging my new external hard drive into my computer, however, I am finding only alias files and I do not know how to restore my data so I can access all of the files again.
Does anyone know how to restore my time machine data from the cloned data I had transferred from my broken external hard drive to my new external hard drive?
    Thanks!

An update - I finally took both of my HDs in to an Apple store and they confirmed my fear: only alias files had been transferred from my old drive, meaning Geek Squad charged me $100 for 850 MB of unusable files.
That has been clear since early in this thread.
Geek Squad has agreed to retry the process
Why pay them to do what you don't need done??? Get a refund and buy an enclosure, which you should have anyway for backups.
but I'm now wishing that I had received more sound advice when I brought the drives into them in the first place.
Don't know who gave you that advice, but I sure wouldn't trust them with my data!
The Apple rep. informed me that my HD works perfectly fine and that it just needs a new enclosure (which I can buy for $20 online, as opposed to paying $100 for a data transfer).
Ummm, the action to take seems very clear to me . . . .

  • Mac Pro 8 core with boot drive cloned from MacBook Pro

I bought a Mac Pro 8 core and in order to avoid having to reinstall all my stuff, I cloned my OSx (tiger 10.49) partition from my MacBook Pro running vista (installed via bootcamp) to my new MacPro's startup disk. The disk works fine except that the MacPro will not boot to osx unless I use the option key and choose the OSX partition. If i just turn the machine on it doesen't find anything. I think it is looking for windows. What do you think?????
Also, if i restart from the os x partition on my mac pro it stops just before the lound bong sound and seems to be looking for the dvd drive. Any ideas??

Well, I've covered this extensively here:
A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate. Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3 or G4 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
    Screensavers written for the PowerPC
    System Preference add-ons
    All Unsanity Haxies
    Browser and other plug-ins
    Contextual Menu Items
Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5
    Kernel extensions
Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior (does not work), TechTool Pro (pre-4.5.1 versions do not work), SuperDuper (newest release works), and Drive Genius (untested) may not work properly on Intel-Macs. The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.

Because Migration Assistant isn't the ideal way to migrate from PowerPC to Intel Macs, using Target Disk Mode or copying the critical contents to CD and DVD or an external hard drive will work better when moving from PowerPC to Intel Macs.
Basically the instructions you should follow are:
    1. Backup your data first. This is vitally important in case you make a mistake or there's some other problem.
    2. Connect a Firewire cable between your old Mac and your new Intel Mac.
    3. Startup your old Mac in Target Disk Mode.
    4. Startup your new Mac for the first time, go through the setup and registration screens, but do NOT migrate data over. Get to your desktop on the new Mac without migrating any new data over.
    4. Copy the following items from your old Mac to the new Mac:
In your /Home/ folder: Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites folders.
    In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
    /Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist (* This is a very important file which contains all email account settings and general mail preferences.)
/Home/Library/Preferences/ copy any preferences needed for third-party applications
/Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
    If you want cookies:
    /Home/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist
    /Home/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist
    For Entourage users:
Entourage is in /Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data
    Also in /Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft
Credit goes to another forum user for this information.
If you need to transfer data for other applications please ask the vendor or ask in the Discussions where specific applications store their data.
    5. Once you have transferred what you need restart the new Mac and test to make sure the contents are there for each of the applications.

Not knowing what you did when you migrated from your PB to the MBP, I can't really comment, but it's quite possible it didn't go as well as you think. Numerous users who migrated from PPC Macs to Intel Macs ended up with an Intel Mac that didn't work properly because Intel coded components had been replaced by PPC coded components.

  • Cloning from SE to SE1 environments?

I know this is a licensing issue. And I know those can't be resolved here, because of all the legalities etc. etc. And I know the only people that can resolve such issues definitiely are Oracle Sales Reps. But I'm not asking for a Supreme Court ruling, just previous experience.
We've been licensed for 10g Standard Edition for a long while, but we only use 2-socket servers, no RAC, and therefore SE1 looks a lot better fit for us, so we started making enquiries about downgrading some aspects of our setup. We figured to keep production at full-blown SE for now, in case we want to upgrade the hardware or do RAC, but run the dev and test environments at SE1.
The sales person we are talking to said, however, "You will however have to import/export data between your SE and SE1 environments as you move from Dev/Test/Prod. You can’t clone databases between SE and SE1 and be licence compliant."
Since the same person also wrote that there's no software difference between the two editions, I don't see what the complication would be in using RMAN to clone a production database (running SE) to a test or dev environment (running SE1): it's not like the dev or test environments would be able to execute software capabilities they're not licensed for (because SE=SE1 as far as software capabilities are concerned). Similarly, our test and dev environments are only 2-socket servers, so their hardware definitely complies with SE1 requirements.
So is this guy right that you cannot use RMAN to clone between SE and SE1 environments and stay licence-compliant? Has anyone experience of this becoming a licensing problem?

No, you have missed the point of my question entirely.
I know what exp and imp are. I know what RMAN is. And I know what each one of them does and how it does it.
What I'm asking is, is it unacceptable from a licensing perspective to CLONE (i.e., use RMAN) a database from an SE environment to an SE1 environment, as I've been told?
We've been told that our SE production databases cannot be CLONED (i.e., RMAN'd) into an SE1 test/dev environment. That instead we will have to use exp to export the data and imp to import it. Which, given the size of these databases, is a total non-starter -and therefore this would stop us downgrading our license for the dev environment.
I want to know if anyone else has heard of or previously encountered this licensing restriction, what validity they think it might have (I know: we're not lawyers. I still am interested in people's thoughts).
I thought all of that was clear from my first post, but if not, I apologise and hope the above makes it clearer: this is not a technical question about the database, but a licensing question about SE/SE1 and the use of RMAN to clone databases between them.

  • Cloning from Windows NT to Windows 2003

I wish to upgrade the OS of our PROD and TEST Servers from Windows NT Server to a fresh install of Windows 2003 Server.
I have managed to complete this on our Development System by performing a clean install of Windows 2003 Server and then cloning our existing TEST Server. This seems to have worked.
Is this a valid and recognised method for upgrading binary compatible Operating Systems?

You will need to export your input level data, and recreate the cubes on the target system. You will NOT be able to copy the page and index files over to migrate your data. Here are some other things to consider:- Your application/database settings- Your security information (filters, groups, and users)- All your calc scripts, reports, etc...- Linked objectsBe sure to give yourself plenty of time with access to the old server before it gets wiped, with parrallel testing if possible.Good Luck,

  • Cloning from iMac to MacBook?

Can you clone your iMac to a ext HD and then use that clone to image onto a MacBook? are there any issues doing this or should the MacBook run just fine. i'll be using SuperDuper
I might be in the process of selling my iMac and using a MacBook temporarily until i finish moving, etc. then get a Mac Pro desktop

    BrianH,
There are no issues that I've seen in cloning OS X 10.4.x from a desktop Mac to a notebook (MacBook or MacBook Pro). I have done so with my newer Intel based iMac and MacBook Pro, and in the past using older G4 PPC hardware.
You should be able to use Apple Disk Utility, Carbon Copy Cloner or a product like SuperDuper! You also don't need to first clone to an external HD. Just put your MacBook in to Firewire Target Disk Mode by holding down the "T" key at bootup, then connect to your iMac -- it will mount just like an external drive.
    Hope this helps,
    Walter

  • My G4 won't boot off a firewire drive cloned from properly-booting drive

I've got a G4 that normally boots 10.3.9 off an external firewire drive. I cloned the drive onto a WesternDigital "MyBook" external hard drive, and connected it via firewire 400. I cloned the 10.3.9 boot drive using SuperDuper to a partition on this drive. But, the G4 refuses to boot off it when I choose it as a startup disk. I see (very briefly) the following
    ....couldn't read it.... @d/mac-io@7/ata-4@1f000/disk@0:5,\\:tbxi
anyone know what this is, why it won't boot off the clone, and how I can check whether the drive contains a proper 10.3.9 system and is set to be bootable?
    Mike

    Hi Mike-
    How did you know?
I "Googled" it. It's been reported many times, and is included in a couple of reviews.
Problem is, "bootable" can be claimed in Mac's, as it will boot with Intel machines.......
    Don't ya' just hate that?????
