Bad Airport reception and resetting SMC problem

Hi,
I still have the bad Airport reception problem (see http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1088230&tstart=0).
I did a complete new erase and install with the discs I got with the computer (10.4.10). When I arrived in the Finder, Airport was completely gone. Nothing to see in the menu bar, nothing in SysPrefs, nothing in System Profiler.
I reset the SMC (shut down, remove power, remove battery, hold power key for 5 secs, install battery, connect to power, boot without pushing any keys). Now I got Airport back, although with the same bad reception.
As a bonus, I now have 2 extra problems:
- when the computer goes to sleep after some idle time, it wakes up again within the second
- rebooting gives me a black screen, no chime, caps key light doesn't work, sleep light is on but not flashing, hard drive is still spinning. Only option: hold the power key for several seconds until it shut downs and boot it again.
And by the way: all this after the Airport card has been replaced!
Any similar experiences, or even better: solutions?
Thanks,
Jef

Hello,
I just received my MBP and I can't believe apple could keep ignoring this serious problem. I have a Dlink router and it works terrific with an old sony vaio but not with my brand new Mac!!! Actually my Airport detect several of the wireless networks around home including mine, but the signal indicator remains gray and the message:"there was an error joining the AirPort network "XXXXX" " is shown. What the **** are they doing at Apple? I use to be very confident about the quality of Macs but now ... Please Apple, stop being so arrogant and respect your costumers!!!! Provide a solution

  • Airport Extreme and Time Capsule problems

I have had an Airport Extreme 802.11g, version 5.7 for several years and have some problems that is get stuck now and then, so I have to restart it. I have tried to upgrade software, but cannot find anything appropriate. Assume 7.5 is a software version, but where and how to upgrade?
I got another problem when I bought a Time Capsule. It interferes with my Siemens Gigaset wireless phone. I have tried to change channel etc, but it does not seem to help. Any tips?
The two problems are not related, as I had the first problem before I got the Time Capsule.

v5.7 is the latest firmware for your AEB 802.11g.
v7.3.2 is the latest firmware for the TC.
You should probably do these simple maintenance tasks:
    Simple Maintenance Tasks:
    1. Repair Permissions - /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.app. Start Disk Utility, select your HD and click on Repair Permissions. When finished, quit Disk Utility and then restart your computer.
    2. Reset PRAM - hold down Option-Command-P-R keys when starting until you hear the startup chime a 2nd time.
    3. Safe Mode Startup - hold down the Shift-key at startup until you see the login screen. When logged-in, then go to System Preferences/Network/AirPort
    - click on the 'Network Name:' roll-button, select 'Join Other Network...', enter 'Network Name and select the security type you are using, and finally, enter your Password and click 'Join'.
    - click on 'Advanced', TCP/IP and confirm that 'Configure IPv4:' is set to 'Using DHCP', click 'OK'.
    - click the 'Apply' button and exit System Preferences.
Make sure you separate the AirPort Base Station and the wireless phone by as large a distance as you can.
You could enact Interference Robustness, but it will reduce the range of your AirPort base station:
    1. Open AirPort Utility, select the AirPort Base Station (main) and click on 'Manual Setup'.
    2. Click on 'Wireless' tab and click 'Wireless Options'.
    3. Tick 'Use interference robustness, click 'Done', and click 'Update'.
    4. Wait for ABS to restart. Restart your computer and test.

  • Bad airport reception.

I don't know why, but my 1.2 ghz 12" ibook gets terrible airport reception. I have checked the airport antenna and it is plugged in. My ibook is 3 feet from my wifi station and it only get 1/2 the reception. When I go to public wifi spots, I never get a signal.
    Any suggestions? Thanks

    Hi,
How far is your Airport and modem from where your cable comes into your house. The reason i mention is that mine is approx 10mtrs and even when i am sitting at my desk with the AEBS right above my head i only get about 65% signal according to MacStumbler but 80-90% signal from my neighbour across the road. After phoning my ISP (Blueyonder in the UK) they sent out an engineer and he did all kind of tests but after it all he moved my modem and AEBS to about 2 mtrs away (temporarily) from where it splits from my cable box. Hey presto 98%.
    Just a thought.

  • Bad internet reception and freezing

My ipad had super recption when I first bought it and everything would load very quickly. Now a week later I have had email freeze twice and I have had to reset it and now I continually have no internet reception.  I have gone from a gen 1 to this one and used to never have problems with reception. Is this just my device or the new ipad in general?

  • Airport extreme and belkin 54g problems - tried ringing applecare.......

    hi all
im new on here and new to the world of mac, i was swayed by the fact thats mac are "relaiable" and i like the OS. anway my airport connection keeps dropping and being really slow then i cant reconnect to it for ages or without having to hard reset my router and put security on again.
i dont think its a problem with the router as my vista laptop connects to it no problem and never drops.
i rang apple and they were not helpful and at one point kept me on hold for 12 minutes in between conversation (on a 0870 number!!) and eventually i had to hang up what they told me was to download a file that they pointed me to and when i did it said i dont have the right hardware for this instillation and realized he told me to download the airpot base station thing
anyway can anyone help me please im getting really frustrated
here are some details from about this mac
Wireless Card Firmware Version: Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (4.170.25.8)
    thanks for your time
    Chris

    Thanks.
If you have the Expresses connected via ethernet to the LAN ports on the Extreme,
you will configure each device to "Create a wireless network" with the exact same name, security and password as your Extreme wireless network. You can probably leave the Channel setting at Automatic for now.
In addition, each Express must be configured as a "bridge"
Since the Express is a single band device, you will need to decide whether you want to expand either the 5 GHz network or the 2.4 GHz network from the Extreme's wireless network. The Express can't do both simultaneously.
Post back if you need more info on your "roaming" network setup.

  • MacBook (13-inch, Late 2009) black screen and reset smc

My new macbook will not start occasionally, there is a black screen after the boot sound and screen with apple and wheel, in black screen i can hear the sounds changing the volume level, but the only way to work is forcing the shutdown and restart until the mac start normal.
I also wanted to ask how reset the SMC whith new mac book (i can't remove battery) there are not articles on the support site.
Sorry for the language but not speak English very well

You are correct that the SMC reset procedure is slightly different from earlier MacBooks...

your instructions are toward the bottom....same as a Macbbok Pro or the Air..

  • Airport Express and Time Capsule problem

We've had an AirPort express since 2006 that has always worked FINE for wireless printing and Airplay.  We just bought a new iMac and a TimeCapsule (2tb).  We replaced our netgear router with the TimeCapsule, and now we have problems.  First off, if the iMac goes to sleep when it wakes - although the connection to the Internet is intact - AirPort Utility will not be able to find any of the TWO devices from any computer in the house (MacBook, PC, and iMac).  Second, if we try AirPlay from iTunes we get this:
And from there, everything again disappears from the AirPort Utility for a while........and then comes back and works fine.  Anyone know how to get rid of this hiccup?  sometimes it takes a while to come back, and we have to turn off one of the devices and turn it back on again.
    Thanks!

So you replaced the netgear router with teh TimeCapsule, and configured the airport express to join the network correct?
The iMac is connected to a LAN port on the TimeCapsule right?
AirPlay works by first "finding," and then, establishing a secured communications link between the iTunes host and the TimeCapsule. Once this link has been established, it can then start the streaming process. Also periodically through the streaming, AirPlay checks to see if the link is still valid.

  • Reseting SMC problem.

    Hi
My son has a Mac Book Pro 13" mid 2012 with its original HDD and an upgraded RAM to 8 GB (Crucial).
Few months ago he damaged his laptop's body in an accident. Since then he have been using with no issues despite the fact the in addition the Ethernet port was not functioning.
I recently bought used the same model with a dead mother board (liquid spillage I think, some marks were by its usb ports, firewire 800 as well as around the battery connector).
My goal was to swap the mother board from his computer to the one with a good body and a dead mother board.
Th process was easier than I thought.
However when it started the keyboard was not responding, I have installed the zif cable correctly At least I think.
Another thing was that once I turned it off it would not restart unless I disconnect and reconnect the battery.
I assume that resetting the SMC will help but with no keyboard, how to do it on this model?
I am lost, thanks for your answers.

Thanks, I thought about it but now when I turn it off I have to disconnect and reconnect the battery in order to have it start...

  • Airport Extreme and USB Printer Problem

I have an Epson printer connected to the USB port of my Airport Extreme.  This has worked just fine for years.  But from today neither my iMac nor my MacBook Air can "see" the printer any more.  I have rebooted everything a couple of times, but still no joy.
I have connected the printer directly to a USB port on my iMac, and all is well, so I guess the problem is not with the printer.
The only thing significant done to my system in recent times is the latest security update, which I installed yesterday.
Can anybody give me a clue as to why this problem has suddenly raised its head after all these years?

    Hi bricknell,
It sounds like you are experiencing some printing issues after performing an update to your computer’s software. Here is an article for you with some troubleshooting steps that will help you address this issue:

  • Airport Extreme and Westell Modem problem

Two days ago I bought a new Airport Extreme to replace my Belkin Wireless G router which operates without problems. I have spent hours unsuccessfully trying to get my AEB to work. My Westell modem is in bridge mode, and each time I configure my AEB to connect via PPoE my results are a flashing amber light on the AEB and a scrolling message next to my airport connection icon which states "Attempting to Negotiate PPoE." After several seconds this message disappears, the airport icon shows full signal strength but I'm unable to connect to the internet. The light is still flashing amber and the Airport Utility indicates that there is a problem with the IP address from the modem.
Reconfiguring the AEB to connect via DHCP results in a green light and the Airport Utility indicates that all is well and I'm connected to the internet. However, each time I try to connect to the internet I'm taken to the configuration page of my Westell Fast Access modem.

I had a similar problem. I had to switch my computer's Airport seting to DHCP from PPPoE. Then I was able to access Airport Utility(be sure to upgrade to 5.1). My Airport Basestation Internet setting was on "Always On". I switched it to "Automatic". Then switch my computer network/Airport setting back to PPPoE. Hope this helps.

  • Airport Express and Linksys Router Problem

I have a Linksys wireless router through which I connect to the internet using my Macbook Pro without any difficulties. I recently purchased an Airport Express unit in order to connect to my stereo and play music using Itunes. However, I seem to be unable to set up the Airport Express as the Airpor Utility does not seem to be able to find it. I tried connecting it to the router using an ethernet cable and this did not seem to solve the problem? Does anyone have any recommendations to solve this problem?

Thank you for the suggestion. That allowed me to see it to configure it but once I disconnect it to restart it I the network cannot find it and it just blinks orange. I am guessing that it is because I have set the network security incorrectly. I set it at WEP 128. How do I check to see how the Linksys is configured? Or do you think it might be something else? Thank you.

  • Airport Utility and System Keychain Problem

I'm having a strange issue when trying to access Airport Utility on our imac. When I click on manual update I get a popup box asking for the administrator user name and pass word because Mac OS X wants to use System keychain. When I type those in the boxes and click allow an error message appears saying I typed an invalid password. I've rebooted, I booted up in Safe Mode which asks you for a password before it logs in - no problems there. I didn't try to access AU from there, not sure if that's possible. I've even gone to account settings and changed the password which requires you to enter the current password, that worked. I used the new password with that warning from Airport Utility but got the same error. I went back and changed the password back to the original and tried again, same error.
I don't normally access AU on that computer, I use my laptop and there are no problems there, so I don't know if this is a problem that just cropped up under SL or not. So far that's the only instance of this popping up with that issue. I don't believe I've ever seen it say it needed to access the System keychain before. Another oddity to this is I can open up Keychain Access and click on unlock the System keychain which then asks you for an administrator password, I enter it and it unlocks with no issue. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
    John

Sometimes the Keychain just gets a bit "wonky." The simplest resolve, in most cases, is to delete all entries with the Kind of "AirPort base station password" and "AirPort network password" in the Keychain using the Keychain Access utility.

  • Airport Express and IP address problems

I have set up an Airport Extreme to my IMac using a Motorola modem 2210 and I get the message "Another device on the network is using your computer's IP address ... " I can't connect to the internet. I don't want my computer to use wireless, but I want to be able to use other devices wireless.

This AT&T support document provides instructions for configuring the 2210 modem for use with a router from another manufacturer, which would be Apple in this case.
    http://www.att.com/esupport/article.jsp?sid=KB401764&cv=801,902&title=Connecting +a+non-AT%26T+provided+router+to+your+AT%26T+Internet+connection#fbid=yOvqjXCz5r d
AirPort Utility, the application used to setup the AirPort will ask you how you want to connect the AirPort to the modem. Choose the PPPoE option and enter your AT&T user name and password as you proceed through the setup.

  • HELP! Airport reception SO bad

Help! Is anyone else getting really bad Airport reception. I have less than half the range than my macbook. I can be looking right at my base station (Negear B) and I'll get only 2 bars. Wondering if anyone else has this experience or if I need to exchange my unit. Thanks!!!!!

if you are using a Netgear B, the connection will be slower because you are serving up B speed, not G or N speed. Try getting a faster router...

  • I'm having a hard time setting up my external hard from with my AirPort Extreme and Time Machine Backups.

I have been using a Mac Mini with an external hard and Time Machine.  I bought an Airport Extreme and have had problem setting up the hard drive using the USB port on the Airport Extreme.  I also just recently bought a Mac Book Air and hope to have both computers back up to the external hard drive using Time Machine and Airport Extreme.  I have been using the optical drive from the Mac mini to load programs into the Mac Book Air.  I think I'm just getting confused in Finder.  I am just not seeing the hard drive.  I ended up plugging the hard drive back into the Mac Mini and that is work fine again.  How do I setting the external hard drive up to the AirPort Extreme and use for both computers?  Or at least to start with the Mac mini.

It's critical to understand that Time Machine (TM) stores backups differently between local and network drives. That would mean the TM backup on your locally attached USB hard drive will not be directly useable when it is connected to the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS). There is a way to copy a local version to a network version, but it is not fool-proof. When you do connect this drive and point TM to it, TM will start a brand new backup, leaving your existing backup as is.
If your current backup is critical to you, you may want to consider getting a second USB drive to attach to the Extreme and use your existing one as a backup ... or use TM's multi-backup process to backup to more than one destination drive alternatively.
So, at this point, you may want to make a decision on how you want to go forward to help provide a solution for you.
To directly answer your question, when you go to select a destination for a Time Machine backup, the drive(s) that show up under "Backup Disks" are those that TM already recognizes and has backed up to. Those listed under "Available Disks" are drives (either local or on the network) that TM can back up to.
