Bad analog assembly - can I transfer Hard drive to my macbookpro?

My emac has a bad analog assembly. I've already had it repaired once when under the apple care plan. The care plan expired and I don't want to have it repaired again. I have a macbook pro and need to get some infor off of the emac's hard drive. Is that possible? I tried the firewire and commandT and nothing happened.

I thought I could connect the emac to my laptop by firewire, turn on the emac and press command T.
If the eMac was working, that would be possible. But if the logic board is damaged or not getting power, then it won't work. The eMac must be working enough for the basic parts of the logic board and drive channel to function. Whether this is the case with your system, I can't say.
You're saying I need to take the hard drive out of the emac, place it in a firewire case, then use the command T?
If you put the drive in a Firewire case, then you just connect it to the MacBook and it should mount; no key commands should be necessary. If you can't get Firewire Target Disk Mode to work on the eMac, then removing the drive and mounting it on the MacBook is your only option. If you don't plan to keep using the drive, then using a connector such as NewerTech's Universal Drive Adapter would work (presuming the drive is good) and be cheaper than a full case. But if the drive is of reasonable size, you can put it in a Firewire case and then use it as backup or portable storage.
Hope this helps.

  • I dropped my macbook pro and the screen is broken can i still use it with an external monitor? Or can I or how do I transfer hard drive files to my mac mini?

I dropped my 17" macbook pro and the screen is broken. Can I still use it with an external monitor? When I plugged it into a monitor I had used it with before, I'm not able to see anything on the macbook screen to control it. It came on but I just got the blue screen with nothing else after typing in my password. (Didn't see the password form just assumed it was there somewhere and it did go from space to blue screen but no desktop icons, files, dock strip at top or anything else, just blank blue screen) so I can't access the system preferences.
Or can I / or how do I, transfer hard drive files to my mac mini? If not salvageable as is can I pull out the hard drive and make it an external harddrive? In otherwords is anything salvageable? It seems it's coming on I just can't access anything. BTW I was told it would cost aprox $1000 to replace the screen! I paid almost $4000 for this thing and it was running great - makes me sick to lose it!

I'd like to promise you that everything will be fine if you just get the monitor going - but it's hard to know what the hardware damage might be. It might be the monitor, or the damage might be greater.
Your best solution would be visit your local Apple Store and let them know what your situation is. They have access to diagnostics you don't, and they might be able to the best way to save your data and keep you computing. It's still not covered, but they can tell you what your current options are.
Um, you might consider investing in a backup drive.
And there other repair options, too. Powerbook Medic http://www.powerbookmedic.com/xcart1/pages.php?pageid=67 offers reliable repairs, and quotes prices well under Apple's.

    Hal

Aha OK then, that should work fine.
The only snag might be, if your missing the original thermal sensor from the original 24" Hard Drive.
Then again, you should be able to use the one that came from the original 17" Hard Drive.

  • U410 ultrabook: Can I defrag hard drive with SSD cache?

    Hi,
I would like to know if I can defrag my hard drive with 24G SSD cache. I heard that it would be bad to defrag the SSD part so I would like to defrag the regular hard drive portion only (1TB). I right clicked the drive but I see four drives and can't tell which one I should defrag. It looks like the first c drive is the one, but I am not sure. Any comments would be helpful. Thanks.

You are right that by default, drives are set to be defragged automatically. But you can also do it manually and when the date of the task is not yet due.
Re ssd, are there permanent files in that drive? By permanent, I mean data, programs, etc.. Not the temporary files used by runned programs and the system using the caching process.

Buy another hard drive.  They're cheap these days.
In fact, buy a couple of 'em.  I recommend a minimum of five internal hard drives.
    C: Windows and Programs
D: Project, graphic and audio files
    E: Cache and Scratch

i have a macbook pro md318 late 2011 i want to know can i change hard drive from 500GB to 2TB????

    Tbh,  I really wouldn't bother.
I may get shot down here, but I like having storage centralised, backed up etc, so I would use the internal storage for the day to day stuff, and anything more dated, and large, then dump it on an external, with backup.
I've heard some horror stories about larger capacity drives getting over hot, and failing in some machines. Not macs particularly though.

  • I can't access hard drive

    I buy Airport time capsule.
I can access WiFi but can't access hard drive ?

Are you actually running Lion on your computer??
Make sure the preference in Finder allow it to show network drives.
    This might be turned off.
Have you setup Time Machine.. Time Machine can usually find the TC. If it fails then you need to redo the setup of the TC.
Use all short names, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
Manually mount the TC hard disk from finder.. go .. connect to server.
    Type in the name.
AFP://TCname (in mavericks you will need to add the domain.. so TCname.local) TCname is of course replaced with your actual TCname.

  • T400 Windows 7 or Vista Clean Install - Can't Detect Hard Drive

I've attempted to install Windows Vista x64 and Windows 7 x64 using retail copies of both OS's on my T400. Neither OS can find the hard drive during the install process. I've downloaded every driver possible from Lenovo and loaded them via USB during the install, with absolutely no luck. I've installed Ubuntu in the meantime to have a usable computer, but I really need Win7 on there, so I have to figure this out. Any solutions? (and telling me to go download the driver isn't going to help me). Also, I've messed around with the AHCI setting in the BIOS, but that didn't help either.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Weird.  Win 7 Pro 64 installed on my T400 without any issues that I can recall.  I realize that doesn't help you much
I was doing a clean upgrade install using a Microsoft upgrade DVD over the top of a Vista installation.
Since you've already tried fiddling the  ACHI/IDE mode the only other thing I can think is something about your initial disk partitioning or formatting (or lack of same) confused the installers.  (I realize a confused MS installer is hard to imagine...)
Maybe fire up your Ubuntu live CD and dd some zeros to the first few sectors of your drive and try again.  Or format the thing w/your choice of FAT32 partitions and see if that makes the installer(s) happier.
What model drive are you using?  Is it the original drive (not that it should matter, mine wasn't)?  What was installed on the machine initially?

  • MacBook Pro2012 : How can you get hard drive upgraded in Netherlands without losing warranty?

My MacBook Pro (2012) hard drive is almost full, Apple refuses to provide hard drive upgrade service, how can you get hard drive upgraded in Netherlands without losing warranty?

    Dear Ralph, and All
    My MBP is indeed non-retina.
I also have Apple care support for 3 years
I was in touch with Apple suport since last week. Response I got on Phone was pretty astounding (waiting email confirmation). They say following
    - Apple support does not provide such service of upgrading hard drive
    - Doing it yourself means you will lose warranty (due to nature of operation one would need to perform on the computer)
    - None of authorised delars will provide such a service
So as such there apparantly is no way to get your hard drive upgraded without losing warranty.
    Leaves me a bit perplexed
I do understand MBP retina (or iPAD / iPhones) are manufactured in way that makes it technically impossible to upgrade certain parts. But why non-retina MBP?
What do you all think? is this reasonable? is this what a MBP customer would expect?
Really appreaciate the quick responses i have recieved from you and others on this forum.
    Many thanks

  • What's the highest Powerbook I can drop my hard drive into?

I have a PowerBook G4 Titanium DVI with a SAMSUNG HM160JC Hard Drive (Connection Bus: ATA, Connection Type: Internal) and it's running OS X 10.4.11 and I'm wondering what is the most powerful PowerBook that I can drop my hard drive into?
My PowerBook is from 2003, so a PowerBook from 2005-2006 would be a huge upgrade.
    Thanks!

Hi, Roger. Any later Powerbook G4 model can use it — all Powerbook G4s use Parallel ATA drives like yours. MacBooks and MacBook Pros use Serial ATA (SATA) drives, and yours can't be installed in them, though it could be used as an external drive with a MB or MBP if mounted in an appropriate enclosure.
It's likely that no other model will be able to use the operating system on the drive now, which was configured appropriately for your PB model at the time of installation. You'll probably have to reinstall the OS to get a suitable configuration for whatever machine you buy.

  • Do i need to buy the same hard driver for my iMac or i can buy any hard driver 3.5?

Do i need to buy the same hard driver for my iMac or i can buy any hard driver 3.5?

You can buy any 3'5" SATA hard drive for the iMac. You can buy a hard drive at OWC.
Note that Late 2009 and newer iMacs have the temperature sensor inside the hard drive, so it's important to get one with that sensor. In this case, I recommend you to take your computer to an Apple Store or reseller and get your hard disk replaced
