Bad audio on IDVD but not IMOVIE

Why is my audio sounding like slow motion when i preview my IDVD but the IMOVIE plays it just fine?

Why is my audio sounding like slow motion
Not sure, but the "preview" in iDVD sometimes is great and the final product is bad, or preview can be bad, but the final product can be just fine.
So you can try "Save as Disk Image" and see if the encoded disk image will play OK with the Apple DVD player. If it's OK, the burn the image with Disk Utiltiy.
But if your audio is still bad on the iDVD disk image, go back to iMovie and "Extract audio" and then try again. You might have 12bit audio in your DV files, if so look here for other advice:

  • Audio in Quicktime, audio in iDVD but not in iMovie

    Hi All,
I'm pretty sure the answer will be a menu setting I haven't been smart enough to find on my own, so thanks in advance for any and all assistance.
On ocassion I've taken quicktime movie file created in Final Cut Pro, imported it into iMovie - where the sound doesn't play, then out of curiousity shared to iDVD, where voila!, I have sound again!!!
What silly setting am I missing? I'm sure it's something simple I'm overlooking, argh!
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    Howdy Brian,
I found the perfect article to help troubleshoot the lack of audio when you play movies in Quicktime. Its named iTunes and QuickTime for Windows: Audio does not play or plays incorrectly and can be found here http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1362.
    All the best,

  • Audio will preview in iDVD, dvd will play audio in puter but not player

Sharing a movie from iMovie 8.0.3 (all programs up to date) gives me a movie with audio I can preview in iDVD 7.0.4 again, all updated. When burned, the dvd will play with audio on the computer, but in an actual dvd player, it will not play audio, and the movie autoplays - to get the dvd menu I had to press "menu."
    Any thoughts?

If the burned disk plays ok in your computer, I would not suspect the software, but the DVD player that you are using. Try the disk in another player and see if it works. DVD players vary considerably in how they handle the audio tracks. I am especially sure that it is the player when you note that one must push 'menu' to get the iDVD menu to appear.
    Other suggestions:
Use a good recommended brand of DVD disk to burn your DVDs, such as Verbatim or Maxell. Memorex and TDK are not recommended here because their layers are thinner and they give inconsistent burns.
Be sure to use a slower burn speed, 4x or less.
Also, most of us recommend that you make a disk image file of all your iDVD projects.
From within an iDVD project, select 'Save as Disk image' from the menu. The process looks like a burn, and takes just as long for encoding, but the end result is a disk image file, not a burned DVD disk.
You can then mount the disk image file and play it on your computer using the application DVD Player.
This disk image file is an exact replica of your iDVD project, with all the media data encoded within it. If it plays properly, you can use it to burn DVD disks now and for as long as you save the disk image file. It is a great backup for your projects. In fact, you can safely move, change or delete the original iDVD project and the original iMovie used in it without losing the ability to burn a disk of your project later.
An iDVD project, on the other hand, is a shell container that points to the media used in it, but does not actually keep those files in it. iDVD pulls the media for the encoding/burn, but the media stay where they are originally located. If you want to save all your iDVD projects, you have to save all the media precisely as it was when the project was created or iDVD will be unable to find it to open the project.
Many have been keenly disappointed to learn that their projects are gone because they saved only the iDVD project and deleted all the other media.
However, with an disk image file encoded with the media, the original iDVD project and iMovies used in it can be safely deleted.

  • Audio Drift with Pro X but not iMovie

For years, I have been editing in iMovie11. I take a 30 minute video and then sync it with audio that was recorded using Pro Tools. In iMovie, I could take the video from my HD camera shot in 30p or 24p and the audio from ProTools(after editing it down) and it would be synced great from begining to end.
Now that I have switched to FCPX, I am noticing a sync problem. At the beginning, it is synced fine, but the farther I go the worst it gets. (The settings in my audio and video have not changed from iMovie and FCPX) WHY?
What should my settings be for the audio? 44 hz or 48 hz? Mono or stereo? wav or mp3?
Do I need to stick with iMovie11? Please tell me no!

I am capturing the video with a Panasonic HD cam AG-HMC40. Filming in 720p with either 30 or 24 fps. I load it on FCPX then also load the audio wav file and then manually sync it up. It is great for the first 10ish minutes then progressively worse.
I am not using the sync clip function. Not sure how-guess I should learn about it.

  • Audio in menu but not in movies

I've built a DVD with music in the menu screen, and 4 mpeg2 movies. When I preview the disc in iDVD I get audio everywhere - the menus and in my movies. When I play my movies with Quicktime they work perfectly. Yet when I burn my project to DVD or Disc Image I get audio in the main manu, but not in my movies - they are silent. I have tried reimporting my movies and deleting all converted assets and I get the same problem. I have also tried changing the compression scheme used - nothing fixes my problem.
Can anyone help me here ? Is iDVD'08 really broken or something ? Any news on a fix from Apple ?

    Hi
Mixing audio from various sources and formats gives iMovie a problem. I use ONLY 16-bit audio
from Camera and only audio .aiff for the rest. From iTunes Export out as an audio-CD .aiff and use
    this in Your movie.
I guess that Garageband or iTunes also are capable to convert .mp3 to .aiff.

  • FCP Quicktime Movies works well in iDVD, but not in DVDSP

    Hello,
I work in a film school with several iMac & PowerMac editing suites running Final Cut Studio 2.
Every computer is set up exactly the same way, yet we are having odd problems with DVDSP on one of the PowerMacs.
From FCP6, we export self contained quicktime movies, that we then Compress, and then import into DVDSP. This system works well on all of our new iMacs, but on the 3 year old PowerMac, the resultant DVDs that it burns do NOT playback on any DVD Players at all.
Yet strangely, when I take the same QT Movie into iDVD on that computer, it burns a perfectly good DVD.
I have even tried bringing the QT Movie files and Compressor files from the Power Mac and transfer them onto an iMac and have been able to burn them fine that way as well. This is occurring with all the FCP projects on this computer.
Any help would be much appreciated,
    Sincerely,
    Marc Griffin

It could be a few things, but it may be that the drive itself is dirty or going. It sounds strange but there were people on the board who ran into issues where they could burn the DVD but not play it back on the same drive. Could be something became corrupted. Also people have noticed some strange things happening if an install of Studio 2 was done over a prior installation - it seemed to be most reliable by doing a fresh OS install then installing 2. Also does the computer have all the updates to the software? Are all the computers running the same OS? Have you deleted prefs and repaired permissions?
Also check your settings on the PowerMac, are you doing a proper build/burn? Did you set a first play? Are you using the same type of media?

  • I want iLife 8 but not iMovie 8, can old projects open in iMovie 6?

I have seen the new iMovie 8 and the missing functions makes it totally useless to me. I am very disappointed with the dumbing down of iMovie with this new version but enough has been said by many others about that already. However, the new iPhoto link to .Mac gallery looks good, and likewise the new version of GarageBand so I would like to get iLife 8 just for those, without using iMovie 8. I want to carry on using iMovie 6 for my old and new projects. If I upgrade to iLife 8 can my old projects continue to be accessed by iMovie 6 if I go to the "previous version folder" and open the application from there? I do not want to risk anything going wrong with the old projects before I have completed them. I definitely am not interested in even starting anything in iMovie 8 as I use all of the lost functions when editing my movies.
When I bought my first Mac 4 years ago, it was the sophistication of the iLife application that came with the computer, and particularly iMovie, that most influenced my decision to switch...nothing to do with iPod halo effects or pretty white hardware. If I was making the same choice now, I would not be similarly impressed and influenced by the capabilities (or not) of iMovie 8.
I can kind of see why there might be a need for the YouTube link up and webcasting functions in iMovie 8 for some people, but I still think that the majority of people using iMovie want to make good looking and sounding movies to store on DVD's. I really hope that Apple give us a proper upgrade to iMove 6 HD and a separate application for all the other simplified stuff.

Thanks both of you. All of the earlier projects that I want to open are in iMovie 6 so it looks as if that will still work.
QuickTimeKirk, I don't think I was really ranting ( I did that a few days a go and my post was deleted, so fair game), but I was expressing an opinion that from what I have read, is shared by many on this forum, and on others. I am not saying that iMovie 8 is absolute rubbish, it will work well for lots of people and has some good functionality if you want to make quick, simple movies and upload them to the web, but I sincerely believe that it falls very short for the many of us who want to continue to be able to do what we had been able to before with the old version. Whenever Apple had previously given us an upgrade to an application it had added not taken away...at least not so drastically as with iMovie 8. To me, not being able to at least edit sound or use a timeline, or themes, just means I can't get the same quality of movie I could before, therefore it is useless to me. I am just expressing my disappointment that a product that I had previously been impressed enough with to switch from PC's because of, no longer holds the same appeal. And I am only talking about iMovie 8, not Apple products in general, or the rest of iLife. I just wanted increased functionality, not less with a new version, and V8 is probably going to work for lots of people, but not for me. And I am not alone in that.

  • Audio in Mplayer but not in SMplayer

I'm new to Mplayer I'm afraid, i'm used to using VLC. So basically, I've set "ao=alsa" in ~/.mplayer/config and if I do "mplayer blabla.avi", the audio works. But if I open a video using SMplayer, I get no audio... Do they use different config files?
Here is the Mplayer command from SMplayer:
    mplayer -noquiet -nofs -sub-fuzziness 1 -identify -slave -vo xv -ao null -zoom -nokeepaspect -input conf=/usr/share/smplayer/input.conf -stop-xscreensaver -wid 39845900 -colorkey 131586 -monitoraspect 1.6 -subfont-autoscale 1 -subfont-text-scale 5 -subcp ISO-8859-1 -aid 1 -subpos 100 -contrast 0 -brightness 0 -hue 0 -saturation 0 -ss 26 -osdlevel 0 -vf-add expand=osd=1 -noslices -vf-add screenshot -channels 2 /mnt/autofs/download/download/Six Feet Under - 3x02 - You Never Know/six.feet.under.s03e02.dvdrip.xvid-ffndvd.avi
I'm guessing the "-ao null" is the problem? But how do I change this in SMplayer?

  • I can send video to IDVD but not audio...

I shot it on my video camera, imported with Imovie, sent it to garageband to add chapters (markers) and then sent it to IDVD for burning. Am I needing to check some audio button or something? The dvd burns fine but no audio.
    Thanks.

Xvid/Divx are output files, not meant to be edited (variations of the MPEG4 codec, often used for Internet streaming video) so, they mostly do NOT edit well (if at all) in any flavor of Premiere

  • Imovie mp4 imports - audio imports fine but not video

I have attempted to import several mp4 files some import fine while the majority import only the audio without the video.

That's could be caused by the incompatible codec of your mp4 files. iMovie can support mp4 files encoding with H.264 and MPEG-4. I'm not sure whether your files are in such codec. Maybe you can try a video converter to help you convert your mp4 files to iMovie first. it's simple and you just need to "Add File"-> "Convert to"-> "iMovie"-> "iMovie H.264(*.mp4)"/"iMovie ProRes(*.mov)".

  • IMPORT issues: Works with iMovie 3 but not iMovie 6 ???

Okay, still trying to get my import issue resolved.
    I have a SONY HDR-HC3 DVmini.
No problems with iMovie 3 on my Powerbook.
iMovie 6 on my MDD will let me control the camera, but the screen stays BLUE with no IMPORT.
My buddy thinks it might be a Quicktime issue.
He said to download Quicktime Pro, that might resolve this issue.
I can copy the iMovie 3 file to my machine with iMovie 6 and do the editing, just not the importing...

    Hi
    Can be so much.
Often Camera has to be connected to Charger/mains during Capture.
An majority is a faulthy - badly connected FW-Cable (USB don't work at all)
    My list on this
    *NO CAMERA or A/D-box*
    Cable
    • Sure that You use the FireWire - USB will not work for miniDV tape Cameras
FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin FW one ?
    • Test another FW-Cable very often the problem maker.
    Camera
    • Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
    • Toogle in iMovie pref. Play-back via Camera (on<->off some times)
    • Some Cameras has a Menu where You must select DV-out to get it to work
    • Camera connected to "charger" (mains adaptor) - not just on battery
Does Your Camera work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK eg recording and playback to TV)
    Connections
    • Daisy Chaining most often doesn’t work (some unique cases - it’s the only way that work (some Canon Cameras ?))
Try to avoid connecting Camera <--> external HD <--> Mac but import directly to the Mac then move
the Movie project to dedicated external hard disk.
    Mac
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ? Please specify the amount of free space.
    (Other hard disks don't count)
I go for a minmum of 25Gb free space for 4x3 SD Video - and my guess is 5 times more for 16x9 HD ones
after material is imported and edited.
    SoftWare
    • Delete iMovie pref file may help sometimes. I rather start a new account, log into this and have a re-try.
    • Any strange Plug-ins into QuickTime as Perian etc ? Remove and try again.
    • FileVault is off ? (hopefully)
    Using WHAT versions ? .
    • Mac OS - X.5.4 ?
    • QuickTime version ? (This is the heart in both iMovie and FinalCut)
    • iMovie 8 (7.1.?) ?
    • iMovie HD 6 (6.0.4/3) ?
*Other ways to import Your miniDV tape*
    • Use another Camera. There where tape play-back stations from SONY
but they costed about 2-4 times a normal miniDV Camera.
    • If Your Camera works on another Mac. Make an iMovie movie project here and move it
over to Your Mac via an external hard disk.

Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos) to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before. Thank you. LKN 1935

Thanks for all your suggestions. What I learned is that I had a software problem. I had something called "Nikon Transfer" on my Mac that was recognizing my Canon camcorder as a still camera and was preventing iMovie from working properly. After uninstalling Nikon Transfer and doing a reboot, everything worked great.
I never liked the Nikon Transfer software anyway--I guess I'll get a cheap card reader and use that to transfer photos in the future.

  • Audio in Menu but not in Movie

Hi, I have just made my second DVD project but am having troubles with the burning process.
Everything sounds fine when I preview the DVD, but once I create the disk image or burn the DVD the audio in the Movie part completely disappears. The audio for the menus plays, but then as soon as I go to view the movie there is no music at all.
Thanks for your input! It is greatly appreciated.

    Welcome to the forums!
What is the source of the audio?
If copy-protected tracks from iTunes they will not play in the DVD.
If that is the case post back - there is a workaround!
    Otherwise:
Your audio settings may have been changed.
    1. Open Audio MIDI Setup (/Applications/Utilities/), then check the Audio Output setting.
    2. Change the Audio Output setting to 44100.0 Hz.
    3. Quit Audio MIDI Setup.
