"Bad checksum in disk label" & "Can't open disk label package"

Hello,
I'm brand new to Sun/Solaris.
I have a Sun Blade 150, with SunOS 5.8.
I wanted to make a backup to prevent future data loss, so I put the disk in a normal PC with Windows XP to try to make a backup with Norton Ghost, the disk was detected, but not the file volume, so I place the disk on a desktop PC, and used Norton Ghost for DOS, the disk was recognized but once again not the file volume, so I wasn't able to make a disk backup, and I quit.
Put back the disk on the Sun Blade 150 PC, and then I was unable to startup the PC, showing the message "Bad checksum in disk label" and "Can't open disk label package".
What's wrong?
How can I solve this?
I need the data that's inside the hard-disk, so I cannot make a clean install, and i also don't have any install CD.
Thanks for any help,
JS

Thanks for the fast response,
i did't allow WindowsXP to write anythink to the disk, but somethink is written, and I don't know what. So now, the Spark-System dosn't boot from the HDD and the data on the disk is very important for me! When I format the disk all data are lost, right?
Is there a way to "rewrite" the Disk-Label-Checksum? I have an original Boot-CD-ROM, another HDD to install Solaris and so one, but I need the data of the corrupted HDD. And I also have not really a glue to use Solaris or any other UNIX, I'm a Windows-User.........

  • Can't open disk label package

    Hi,
i just tried to make a boot DVD for Solaris 9 9/05 from a image file (.iso)
the iso file size is about 4.383GB.
tried with the nero express with the option copy image to disk.
succefully burnt the details, even the expected .flar file exists in the burnt DVD.
But when i tried in the SUN machine E2900, i got the following error,
    Rebooting with command: boot cdrom
ERROR: disk-label do_read: Short disk read
    Can't open disk label package
    ERROR: Can't open boot-device
    - I guess the fashion in which we are writing an image file to the DVD matters. if somebody faced the same situation, please do suggest me how to proceed ?
    thank you very much

  • T61p Hard drive problem- Can't open Disk D:

Hi, about three days ago, my laptop, T61p, it happened blue scrren error, and yesterday, it happened that I can't open the Disk D:, when I tried to open it, it said parameter uncorrect or asked me to format the disk.
Cause there are some useful files in the disk, I don't want to do that. And because I haven't backed up the system for several months, I don't know how to resuce the files in it.
Actually, this problem had happened last months, but when I restart the computer, the diskcheck runs automatically, and after that, the disk D: can be opened. But this time, the system just check the disk C:, and I can't run the "diskcheck" for Disk D:, when I insert this order in "cmd", it said the disk is raw, and can't proceed.
    Can anyone help?
    Many thanks!

If you get a response that the disk is "raw", you can try the following: go into diskmgmt.msc (type it in run-dialog), and try setting a different drive-letter on the D-drive. See if that helps (reported "raw" disks in Vista/Windows 7 sometimes are just failure to recognize the disk properly, and a new drive-letter "activates" it again).

  • Disk utility can't repair disk, back up and restore files......I need help, I'm worried I'll lose all my photos, files etc

    Mac started hanging up while streamlining a kids show. Restarted and got the screen with the apple and the circle. restarted with control-option p and r. Ran disk repairitem got the following results;
    invalid index key,
    it rebuilds catalog b-tree,
    volume repair complete,
updating boot support partitions for the volume as required,
Error disk utility can't repair disk
I'm then prompted to back up all files, reformat the disk and restore backed up files.
Obviously need help here as I think I'm in danger of losing my files, photos etc if I don't do this right.
    Can anyone help
    Steve

You might want to back up the disk as soon as possible, do the repair, then back it up again. First time will have the issues that Disk Utility can't fix, however, you'll have the data saved.  Then, once you get things repaired, make a new backup, and go from there.
If you're going to use a hard drive directly connected to your iMac for backup, this is what I mentioned earlier: http://twelvesouth.com/products/backpack/ Great way to use space behind the iMac without adding something else to the desk top. You can buy it through Apple online/stores or Amazon, and there are probably other sources too.
For external hard drives, I like those sold by OWC at http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/ as many of them use Oxford chip sets, wihch work well with macs (I've used several for years with no issues). Most pre-packaged drive/cases have a 3 year warranty, although you can buy a case and add your own hard drive. I like Western Digital Scorpio Blacks that have a 5 year warranty.

  • Can't open disk images after 10.4.6 update

I upgraded my computer to 10.4.6 and now I can't open any disk images. I checked my disk in Disk Utility and it said it had errors, so I booted from my installation disk to fix the drive. That worked for about a day, and then the same thing happened again. It says my disk is fine, so I don't think I need to go through the trouble of rebooting and repairing it.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

    Shazzi,
Have you repaired permissions on your start-up drive using Disk Utility in addition the disk check and repair that you did? By the way, what kind of errors did DU find when you checked and repaired your disk? Did it complete the repair?

  • HT3386 Where is the icon for pages?  How can I open desktop labels program

Apps says Pages is installed.  I cannot locate it on my iMac.  Cannot open desktop labels either.  Have been charged for both.

If you bought Desktop Labels from the Mac App Store, it should be in your Applications folder.
You can open AppleWorks 6 word processing, spreadsheets & presentations in Pages, Numbers & Keynote respectively. You cannot open any other type (draw, paint or database) of AppleWorks 6 documents with any iWork application nor can you open AppleWorks 5 or any version of ClarisWorks documents. There is no special importing needed. There are several methods you can use, common to most Mac applications. Use the Open dialog, Control- or right-click & choose the desired application from Open With in the contextual menu or drag the icon of the file onto the desired application icon in the Finder or the Dock. If you want to (semi-) permanently change the application to open the files, you can do it in Get Info. I'm not sure how successful this would be with AppleWorks documents, though, since OS X does not differentiate between the various AppleWorks document types & there are three different applications you would use.
Preview, that comes with the Mac OS will open PDFs.

  • Can an opened disk image (.dmg) be passworded?

I have created a DMG file with encryption and password. That secures it before I open it.
Can I also have password protection after I have opened it?

Can I also have password protection after I have opened it?
I'm not sure I understand the question, so let's see if this hits the mark... When you open an encrypted .dmg file, you must supply the password. From then on, as long as it appears as a "disk" on the desktop, you can access that disk and all the files on it without a password. When you're done, you drag the "disk" (not the .dmg file!) to the Trash to "eject" it. At this point, it's locked up again, and you'll have to enter the password to open it again.
Does that answer the question? If not, you'll have to be more specific.

  • Can't open disk drive

Hi. I put a DVD in the disk drive for my Power Mac G5. I have tried to eject the disk using various methods, but nothing has worked. Here is what I have tried thus far:
    1. Press "Eject" button
    2. Open Disk Utility (to eject the file) -- but the dvd is not seen by disk utility
    3. Restart, hold down mouse.
    4. Use firmware: Restart, hold down command-option-o-f when startup sound heard, type "eject cd".
    5. Hold down metal door, look for hole below drive, push paper clip in the hole. I suppose it is possible that I found the wrong hole.
Nothing has worked. When any of these steps are taken, I hear a mechanical sound, as if the computer is trying to open the door, but it doesn't actually open.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

Hi, and a Warm Welcome to the Power Mac G5 Forum!
There is a bit more info on possible emergency eject hole positions at Figure 4 here
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=88215
It takes a strong, straightened paper clip in the emergency eject hole - it is a mechanical release only, so you will have to slide the tray out by hand. If the drive is dodgy anyway, it may be easier if you remove the drive
    http://www.info.apple.com/usen/cip/pdf/g5/073-0807.pdf
As to the problem - a jammed tray on a PC optical drive here was fixed by levering the toothed rack on the tray back into the groove where it could then contact the cog wheel that drives it. But you need to remove the optical drive on a G5 to try anything like that.
Please post again if you have any questions. Good Luck.

  • Disk Utility can't repair disk

Hi, I just saw that the amount of memory left on my HD just dropped around 60GB, so I used the "Verify Disk" option on Disk Utility, and the output was:
    Verifying volume “Macintosh HD”
    Performing live verification.
    Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
    Checking extents overflow file.
    Checking catalog file.
    Checking multi-linked files.
    Checking catalog hierarchy.
    Checking extended attributes file.
    Checking volume bitmap.
    Checking volume information.
    Volume header needs minor repair
The volume Macintosh HD was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.
Error: This disk needs to be repaired. Start up your computer with another disk (such as your Mac OS X installation disc), and then use Disk Utility to repair this disk.
I don't have the disk right now, so is there some other way I can repair it, get another install disk, or anything else? I've been thinking of booting up with a Linux livecd, but can it access the HFS+ filesystem?
    Thanks.

    Try this: from http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1417
Start up your computer in single-user mode to reach the command line.
Note: If necessary, perform a forced restart as described in the Emergency Troubleshooting Handbook that came with your computer. On desktop computers, you can do this by pressing the reset/interrupt button (if there is one) or holding down the power button for several seconds. On portable computers, simultaneously press the Command-Control-power keys. If your portable computer doesn't restart with this method, you may need to reset the Power Manager.
    At the command-line prompt type:
    /sbin/fsck -fy
Press Return. fsck will go through five "phases" and then return information about your disk's use and fragmentation. Once it finishes, it'll display this message if no issue is found:
** The volume (name_of_volume) appears to be OKIf fsck found issues and has altered, repaired, or fixed anything, it will display this message:
***** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED *****
Important: If this message appears, repeat the fsck command you typed in step 2 until fsck tells you that your volume appears to be OK (first-pass repairs may uncover additional issues, so this is a normal thing to do).
When fsck reports that your volume is OK, typerebootat the prompt and then press Return.
Your computer should start up normally and allow you to log in.
If you can't find your original install disk, you could always buy another Snow Leopard disk. It's only $29.

  • Macbook Pro not booting after update. ''Disk Utility can't repair disk''. Help needed!

I have recently updated my macbook pro as I had some pending software updates. I left it to do the job over night and the next day I noticed it was not letting me sign in to my account session as usual.
I restarted the computer and ever since then when I boot it, it just shows the apple grey screen with a bar that loads to about a 3rd and then it turns off again. I have contacted apple but they were unable to help me with this.
So far I have tried to:
    1. Re-install OS X 10.8 - but it says the disk is locked or OS X cannot be installed on Recovery HD.
    2. Verify and Repair the disk and I errors but it cannot fix them. Some are:
                   'invalid leaf count''
                   ''missing thread record''
''incorrect number of file hard links''
                   ''overlapped extent allocation''
and it finally says ''the volume Macintosh HD cannot be repaired'' Error: ''Disk Utility can't repair this disk.. disk, and restore your backed up files.
I would like to know a way to back up my files so that i can completely restore the disk without any data loss as I havent backed up for a while!
If anyone has any solution to this issue it would be much appreciated!

    I just ran the Disk Utility, and cannot very disk. It gives me an error message;
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
    Volume needs repair
and when I run the repair, this is the message:
The volume GERRARD could not be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error
    Repair attempted on 1 volume
1 volume could not be repaired
Prior to running Disk Utility, I have already tried DiskWarrior, and could not repair my disk. Anyway I can fix this problem??? Formatting the disk would be my last option (though I am unsure if it will fix the problem). Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Meanwhile, I will continue to back up my file, and delete unused data and try to run it again.
Thank you all very much for any input.

  • Macbook w/ whole slew of problems...Won't Start Up, Disk Utility Can't Repair Disk, Horizontal Lines on Screen, Etc.

I purchased my Macbook in the summer of 2011 and before it went berserk it was running Mavericks. 3 years later, it's finally seemed to have run its course.
It won't start up normally and it won't start up on safe boot. Attempting to use disk utility to repair the disk only gives me the message: "Disk utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible." There are also horizontal lines across the start screen (before it inevitably shuts down) and the screen looks very faintly purple-ish/off-colored.
This actually didn't come out of the blue. On Monday, my macbook suddenly froze, went white, and beeped three beeps repeatedly. I restarted it and backed up all my important work files and set up an appointment at the genius bar for Friday once work ended. It remained buggy during this process with the beeps returning an occasionally a blue screen popping up.
Unfortunately, there wasn't enough space to back up my important photos and by the time I returned on the next day with an external hard drive to store them on, my macbook would no longer turn on.
Is there anything I can do to bring my macbook back to life? Ideally I'd like for it to last one more year before I graduate college. Is it still salvageable, and if so, is it worth salvaging?

I hate to spread gloom, but that computer has serious problems. The only people who can diagnose the problem(s) are technicians. I would take it back to the Apple store for further testing.

  • Only turns on in OSX Recovery, Disk Utility can't repair disk

Hi guys, I really need your help, as my Macbook Pro running on OSX Mavericks is having problems.
Today I turned my Mac on, and it started up with a loading wheel and a loading bar. When the loading bar finished, the Mac turned itself off. I tried many times, same happened every time. I then went into OSX Recovery, started repairing Macintosh HD, but the error message saying "Disk Utility can't repair Macintosh HD" came up and now I don't now what to do.
Is there any way I can back up my files in this situation?
Is there any way I can repair the disk without having to erase all data and reinstalling OSX?
Or do I really need to bring it to a Apple Store for repair?
    Thx for reading

If you have access to another Mac and both computers have the appropriate connects, try the Target Disk mode to see if you can copy the files.
