Bad Colors on Safari vs Firefox
OK, I've begun to notice that Safari 4 is displaying color on jpegs very poorly while Firefox displays them exactly as they were saved in Photoshop.
I've put up a page showing the contrast at my website:
http://www.penart.com/firefoxvsafari
Safari seriously desaturates the colors.
The shot was taken on a 23" apple monitor, using OS 10.4.11.
Apparently the problem is that Safari no longer assigns an sRGB profile to jpegs that weren't saved with a color profile, which must be like 90% of the jpegs on the web. I'm seeing the same problem on other designer's and artist's websites I look at.
If that's correct, the only solution is everyone who has jpegs without profiles has to resave them with sRGB profiles attached and reupload them. OR Safari needs to start re-assigning profiles automatically so everyone's images don't look bad. If I resave an image with an sRGB profile and reupload it, it displays like the image looks in Firefox, and originally looked in Photoshop.
Anybody else notice this?

Hmmmm, somebody must have noticed, cuz 4.0.3 seems to have solved the problem!

Green menubar & "bad" colors in all apps on G5
This problem surfaced when I first installed 10.5 months ago, & persists after fully erasing disk & reinstalling with 10.5.2 -- and did NOT occur under 10.4.x or before.
I have a blue-green menubar at top (main menubar) since 10.5 was installed -- ALSO
All colors in any image viewed -- i.e, .jpg or other photo images in image-oriented app's such as Preview -- will be badly distorted and altered unrecognizably IF the image is viewed at any size larger than thumbnail. Same for iPhoto and other apps, as I said.
Images viewed over the internet are fine, but will lose proper color if downloaded and viewed! Videoconference images with iChat have good color, same for online with Safari and Firefox. However, anything viewed in Preview will open with colors so altered that the image is useless.
HELP!! This makes my G5 useless for viewing "field visit" photos for my visit or any image that's emailed to me. I can't imagine that I'm the only person with this problem, especially since it persisted AFTER I wiped the drive and reinstalled from original 10.5 family-pack installer dvd.
Any guidance, any hope would be greatly appreciated, even via email. First problem that I couldn't solve, ever, in 20 years of Macs, so I'm baffled.I post this so anyone else going through this will have a hint on where to go to solve it.
The solution was simple: turns out that the display used for this particular G5 had an odd interaction with the Mac's color prefs (and that same monitor works perfectly with all other Macs!)-- I have NO idea regarding cause or in what the mixup is rooted, so if someone at Apple wants more info, contact me! However, simply having the computer boot ONCE with any other monitor causes something in the Mac to reset, and transferring it back to the original monitor leaves the colors set properly, and the problem disappears.
Something very subtle is happening, here -- and someone with more tech and system-software background than I have might want to put some thought into this. It will rear its nasty little head in other situations, I'll bet on that. Feel free to email me if you want more data.
Problem monitor was ANY projection monitor, and in this case specifically a XR-30X DLP projector. Note that this was NOT a problem with simple color-table or color values - everything displays perfectly, even in complex color depth, just fine EXCEPT the color of the menubar and the colors are totally distorted in any image above thumbnail size in ANY image format in any application displaying photo quality images (that draws its color table from the computer rather than from internet instructions). AND note that the projector handles the colors properly when the VGA cable is transferred to it from another monitor, and afterward, so the miscue is happening on the computer end, not in the projector. Only if the computer was booted from the projector does the interaction occur. Get the drift? Thanks! Let me know if more info is useful, and I'll email it or post it here or as instructed. -
Safari and Firefox not loading pages
Safari and Firefox are now selectively not loading certain pages. Sites like penny-arcade.com and staffingnow.com give me a ...
Safari can’t connect to the server.
Safari can’t open the page “http://www.staffingnow.com/” because it could not connect to the server “www.staffingnow.com”.
message. Now I have tried to empty my cookies, my cache, I have cleared all data that can be cleared. I've renewed my DHCP lease, reset my router, restarted my computer, etc and none of it seems to help.
I've tried loading them on my girlfriend's pc and they load up fine.
Any ideas?Having the same problem here, only I dont have firefox. Safari refuses to load my webpage www.epicvideo.com.au yet any other computer can access it. I have another site, with the same server, on a similar but cheaper plan, that loads every time.
I have no problems with download speeds, but from reading discussions, some individual sites, hand-picked by Safari, refuse to load. My business website is the only site Safari wont load - I get the error "Bad Request (Invalid Hostname)" - frustrating when running a business!!!!
Ive done it all to, emptied the cache, reset safari, deleted all my book marks (yay), turned off my modem, restarted my server, spoken to tech staff at my STMP and website server... even Mac Heads at Telstra... no answers.
Lastly, im finding discussions not helping too much either, cause im just deleting files and changing settings etc - something that will surely cause me more grief!! -
My webpage is massive in Safari and Firefox but fine in Chrome...
Hi,
I've been working in Dreamweaver CS5, my pages are all working fine across all browsers it's just the size which is different and I can't figure out why.
The sites not live yet but here's the code:

I've found that if I make it smaller either by changing the wrapper or exporting a smaller size from photoshop, the size is fine on Safari and Firefox but really small on Chrome. Prefer bigger rather than smaller but would be so great if there was something I could do to get them all the same...
Help. ThanksSince we can't see your images without a link to your work in progress, my guess would be your zoom settings in those browsers are set to something other than 100%.
You are also shooting yourself in the foot in a major way with all that absolute positioning. APDivs have been removed from DW in newer versions because Adobe finally came to their senses and stopped allowing the marketing department to dictate how design should be done. -

IWeb-generated site OK in Safari and Firefox, but no NavBar in IE
I created a site in iWeb and it displays fine in Safari and Firefox. However, the entire NavBar section is not displaying in Internet Explorer, despite loose permissions for running code in IE.
The script section from one of the pages appears below, and any help or suggestions are much appreciated. I need to get this site up, and really need it to be accessible for IE users.
Thanks.

//--><!Are you using the navigation menu that comes with the page template? If so, it will not display on a PC with Internet Explorer unless javascript is turned on in the preferences. The template nav bars in iWeb use java and if this is not enabled on some computers, then it cannot be seen.
What you can do so that it will show up in IE, is to create your own text based navigation bar instead - to do this, just open the Inspector and then go to Page - second choice in and click on the boxes which say hide navigation menu and then just create your own by using a text box, shape or whatever. Don't forget to hyperlink to your pages though. -
G4 (800MHz) connects to airport network via N300 wireless modem but won't bring up a browser page (Safari or Firefox) - so the connection is there, everything says its a goer - I get a clear black signal icon in the menu bar on top, and a clear signal strength in the Internet connect dialogue box - - but when I run either of the browsers, it just says 'not connected to internet' - even for the 'software update'.

Safari and Firefox always crashes down on my mac
Hi,
I have a macbook, the older one, and I started to have problems with safari and also firefox, since a really long time. I have now the newest updates, and i reinstalled my mac OSX, I did repair permissions, and it still doesn't want to work. I don't know maybe its because i don't have flash player, because i used to have but my little sister deleted it and so first i just couldn't watch videos and stuff like that, but now it just always crashes, even on hotmail, or facebook. I tried to download like 1000 times the new flash player and i installed it also but it just doesn't work. I even downloaded a flash player remover and then installed it again. I also installed safari and firefox many times. PLEASE HELP ME!!! I tired to download other applications like opera, or internet explorer, but they also crashed. I'm not a computer genius as you can see, and also sorry for my bad english.Process: Safari [141]

Hello,
why Safari shows different colors that Opera and Firefox?
Here is preview:

Thanx!Hi big.mike,
Are you creating a web site? If so, which editor? Depending on which editor, you should have an option for Web Safe Colors. That way they will all the same shade of green.

How can I disable the blue highlight on textfields in Safari and Firefox, using CSS?
Hi, I'm trying to disable the default blue highlight on textfields in Safari and Firefox. I can get it to work in Safari by using the following CSS code:
input {outline-style: none;}
This doesn't work for Firefox, though.
Can anyone help me to get it to work in Firefox?
Thanks in advance! Are you referring the the border color or the actual field color?
For field colour see the section on the input tag.
However if it is the border color, this is set by the browser o/s, and cannot be changed with any 'cross-browser' technique, it can be changed in IE and other browsers using custom behaviors (IE), or by using custom skins (others).
But the skins are only enabled by the user, and changing the chrome of the browser for form fields using JavaScript would probably affect the entire browser anyway.

the firefox works well. skype works well, ichat works well.
my friend told me, maybe is the DNS error. I try to link google by ip and web address with safari. they spent same time, about 3min, while firefox about 1sec.

golden grape - Welcome to the discussions!
DNS problems are very irritating - and some of the hardest to figure out.
Let's start gathering some information to see how things are set up. Open the Network Utility and go to the "Lookup" tab. Pick one or two addresses and look them up. How long does the server report it took to do the lookup (query time). How long did you wait from clicking go?
P.S. sometimes the best thing is to ignore these things for an hour or so - it's often a temporary thing while your DNS server works out the addresses you need. Also - mac OS will cache the addresses - so once you have them - you don't need to wait anymore on DNS to find things. Try to leave your mac on as long as possible - unless you have some bad software or corruption on a disk - the longer it runs, the faster things will get.

7ms! Your DNS server is a lot faster than mine.
I can confidently say that you don't have DNS problems. If you had DNS problems - firefox and Network Utility should be equally slow. This really has nothing to do with mini hardware either.
It would be best to ask a new question titled "Safari slow - FireFox fast" in the Safari group. I'm sure a lot of people there will have good ideas to find out what causes safari to go slow when firefox can browse the same site with speed.
http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=169
One things I can suggest is:
* Temporarily change your Safari preferences to open the bookmarks or a blank page. You will know if safari is waiting on something locally or the web page is drawing slowly. I doubt this is it - but you never know until you try to narrow down what exactly is slow.I am using school's network now.
Does the same thing happen if you connect to the internet through 'normal' means, such as a home internet connection (broadband, dialup etc), or does it just happen at school?

Safari and Firefox stalling on certain sites
Certain internet sites like the New York Times and ESPN seem to make Safari and Firefox stall completely. Anyone have a solution for this?
Try using the Activity Window when visiting one or two of the problem sites. I found that one site was loading two flash files, each over 1 megabyte. Instead of loading the rest of the site, these files stalled the entire site, or Safari, until they were loaded. In the Error Console I'm seeing lots, more than two dozen on one site, of Javascript errors. Again, I think it's a combination of bad/outdated programming on some sites and something broken in Safari.
I think the issue boils down to sloppy programming on some sites and changes to the recent build of Safari. I don't know if the recent OS upgrade broke Javascript and I wish there were a way to reinstall it alone to see if that fixes part of the problem.
I also notice that with OS 10.5.6 and Firefox that same problem sites are also slower to load, but not nearly as slow as when using Safari. Logging in with Tiger and its version of Safari is definitely a better experience. -
Problems with Safari and Firefox (HTTP?)
Problems with Safari and Firefox (HTTP?)
On a laptop G4, 10.5.8 and Safari 5.02 I experience the following:
On the account of my oldest daughter everything works fine, i.e. wireless internet works and no problems with mail or safari.
On the same laptop, on the account of my other daughter, the wireless is OK, she can mail etc. But safari nor firefox works. It says: can’t find server (whatever site) and in the activity window it looks if safari tries to open files (in the safari preferences-folder) in stead of http. Same applies to Firefox, so maybe it has more to do with HTTP in general?
What goes wrong? What to do? I tried the following on the host terminal (tips from Apple)
defaults write com.apple.safari WebKitDNSPrefetchingEnabled -boolean false
and
defaults delete com.apple.safari WebKitDNSPrefetchingEnabled
but that did not help,
NanneI'm still wondering why it happens now at this moment in time...
PC does seem to be a bit odd & inconsistent, the few times I've tested with it, at least so far as we content filtering goes; and if I remember rightly, you're not the first to report previously ok settings suddenly preventing some or all internet until pc is switched off altogether.
It may work when re-enabled -
