Bad Defaults ?

Hello.
I got a problem with my G4 quicksilver, 10.4.5.
Sometimes it doesn't wake from sleep.
I did all the maintenance things (with onyx, and pram zapping) but sometimes it still can't wake up.
I tryed to reset the open firmware by doing cmd opt O F at startup and:
reset-nvram
set-default
reset-all
But when I type set-defaults I got this message: "bad defaults".
What does that means?
Is it a problem, does it have to be fixed?

Ah this is a misanderstanding, I was replying to W.J. Llope : everything was ok according to the "Apple Hardware Test" CD but my problem is still unsolved.
I still wonder about this "Bad Defaults" in open firmware and my computer still doesn't wakes up from sleep (not everytime, though).
When it occurs, the computer itself is not really sleeping since I can hear the fan working at normal speed. I got no solution but to force restart with the front button.

Bug: bad default save directory

When saving files (e.g. a stored procedure definition) in "File ... Save As", the default directory is always "C:\windows\system32\config\systemprofile". That's stupid and senseless. What's worse is that a changed directory isn't remembered, it always defaults to that location, wasting time every time.
Suggested fixes:
1) Make the default the working directory when sqldeveloper is invoked. For example, the one specified in a shortcut.
2) If the "Save as" directory is changed by the user, then remember it and use the same location next time, or at least through the current session

I see this in 3.2.20.0.09.
When attempting to "Save Package Spec and Body", the default is "....sqldeveloper/bin", and there is no way to change the default (one can change the directory for the current operation, but the problematic default will be there the next time one attempts the operation).
This is very annoying.
I don't even see where it was intended to be able to configure this. Under "Tools->Preferences" I don't see anything that looks like it would configure it, in sqldeveloper.conf nothing seems to be useful, and scanning the results of "Help->about->Properties" suggests that the "VMOption" of "user.dir" might be relevant, but changing that seems to leave the program inoperable.

Arch 0.7-Beta2 - Bad default grub config

Ive just gotten the 0.7 beta working on my new server.
I had problems when booting into the system, the kernel saying it couldnt mount /dev/discs/disc0/part5 (my / partition)
ive forgotten the exact error, but it was at the VFS mount point.
I spent a number of hours trying to figure out what was wrong.
After a while i came across phrakture's(?) post about having grub problems and tried replacing the root=/dev/hda5 instead of the /dev/discs/... style.
this worked.
it would be good if the 0.7 grub config file had something mentioning the different naming schemes for udev vs devfs
admittedly it has this comment

another thing, required kernel parameters.. are there any required for Arch to function? I havent seen anything in the wiki mentioning any requirements or even lack there of.

Well, if I were to venture a guess, it's because your kernel doesn't have devfs built in at all. So the kernel has no idea what /dev/discs/... is supposed to point to.
yep, thats what im saying.
but because its possible to do such a thing, even during the install with the compile youre own kernel option, I think it would be worth adding an example to distinguish between udev and devfs style devices.
seeing as 0.7 comes udev ready, i didnt expect there to be any trouble with device naming conventions. It took me some hours to realise thats what the problem was.
i think its worth the effort to save anyone else the trouble in the future.

OSA - Default Manager From Org Unit

Hi everyone:
In my appraisal form, under "Processing" tab, in "Further Template Behaviour", I have included the standard BADI (Default Appraiser - Default Manager).
Is this BADI supposed to pick the manager (chief position) of the org unit that belongs to the employee?
If yes, it does not seems to be working the way it should be. I can put anyone (even the subordinate of the employee) as the appraiser and the system still lets me go through.
OSS notes does not seems to have any solution with this.
Has anyone encounter anything like this before? Your help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your help. I managed to get the "Default Manager" BADI working.
However, this is not a complete functionality because the appraisee can simply change the appraiser's name. There is no control on the appraiser chosen. I can always choose my subordinate as my appraiser, which is not correct.
I know that in "Processing" tab, we can de-select "No Authorisation Check for Appraiser". This feature will check if the user (in my case, the appraisee) has authorisation for the appraiser etc. A few questions I would like to find out
1) Will this feature work for my scenario?
2) To use this feature, do I need structural authorisation or just non-structural authorisation?
3) Should i use BADI "Authority Check" instead, to cater to my requirement?

T410 - how to recharge backup battery after - ERROR 0251 System CMOS checksum bad

Hey people
I would like to know how to recharge the backup battery ( internal one, keeping clock and date etc. )
i got the
Error 0251 System CMOS checksum bad— Default configuration used.
message and after looking at the T400 manual they write what to do:
Charge the backup battery for more than 8 hours by connecting the ac adapter.
ok sounds good, but i cant figure out how to properly charge it,
do i need to put the normal battery pack out and then attach it to the AC adapter, or not?
Does the laptop need to be running or will it be charged also turned off?
i would really appreciate if u could help me out and tell me the proper way to recharge!!

I didn't know that the backup battery was rechargeable. I don't think it is. You might be better off to just replace it.
The Hardware Maintenance Manual page 80 shows how to access it. According to the System Service Parts T410, the FRU number is 02K7078. They should be easy to find and inexpensive.

Can not display long derived measure - ORA-33674

I would need calculated measures for compiling some special URL, but there seems to be now way to have results longer than 60 characters. I tried creating the measure using AWM and using OLAP API. Both will result in:
ORA-33674: Data block exceeds the maximum size of 60 bytes.

But here it is about DerivedMeasures, so the workaround is not applicable. There is no corresponding option. Unfortunate this has not been fixed by BugFix 6940809 as described in [AWM 11.1.0.7.0B Readme|http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/bi/olap/11g/awm/awm11.1.0.7b_readme.html]

Translating from German: While writing to the DB he finds out he doesn't actually have some object called TO_CLOB. Does they API offer functionality not supported by the DB?
Played around with this for quite a while - suggestions more than welcome.
I'm evaluating on the OLAP Option, using AWM 11.1.0.7.0B, Oracel DB & OLAP 11.1.0.7.0, OLAP API 11.1.0.6.0 (delivered with AWM 11.1.0.7.B) and the Oracle OLAP 11g Sample Schema.

This is similar, bot not quite the same problem as for attributes. In the case of attributes, the problem was bad defaulting of the VARCHAR2 length by AWM. To fix it is was just necessary to give an appropriate length.
Your issue is more serious since it lies in the server itself, which attempts (badly in this case) to derive the data type from the expression. In this it determines that the data type is VARCHAR2, but it defaults the data length to 60 instead of deriving the length from the contents. I am not aware of any workarounds in 11.1.0.7 for this problem. CAST, for example, does not solve the problem. The bug is addressed in 11.2 beta releases, but it was a non-trivial project that is no likely to be back ported to 11.1.0.7. It may be possible to bump up the default of 60 to something higher, but this is not a general solution.
The TO_CLOB error is due to the fact that the CLOB data type (and hence TO_CLOB function) is not supported by the AW. It is supported by relational tables, which is why it is listed in the OLAP API. It can be used, for example, in the mapping between cube and table as long as you resolve the CLOB into an AW data type again.

Search doesn't work

MacMini. I have two of them, running OSX 10.8 Both continue to confound me with bad search results. I keep having these kinds of experiences on both computers. Searching with the finder is normally second nature, I am trying to be much more conscious and scientific with my steps. This goes well beyond the bad default search preferences that come with installation; I know it defaults to All My Files, but there is never anything there, so I constantly have to manually change it to This Mac. I can't find any way to make that permanent. Under view, it defaults to some strange way to "arrange" files scattered over multiple lists. From the desktop I can fix that, within programs I have no access to change that screwy layout so I have to search through junk to find my result. The moment I click on a search, I almost instantly see the file I was looking for, but before I can click on it, it disappears, replaced with thousands of wrong results that I have to scan through to find the first item that popped up, now burried. That's just a huge waste of time. But what is more frustrating is that it cannot find an exact file when the name is spelled correctly, case sensitive.
I have a folder open on my desktop, but I don't know where it is or what drive it is on. Inside that folder is a file with a unique combination of two english words without a space, which are the same name as the folder they are in. I copy the file name and paste it into the finder. No typos possible in this step. Nothing. It can't find the folder or the file I am looking at.
Is this inherrent in OSX 10.8? What am I doing wrong?

n Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, if you want to search your Mail messages by typing keywords in the application's search box, Spotlight won't find any messages if it isn't allowed to index and search your Home folder. This is because Mail messages are stored in each user's Home folder.
Note: By default, Spotlight includes your Home folder in its searches. This issue only occurs if you specifically added your Home folder to the Privacy list.
To resolve this issue, use Spotlight preferences to remove your Home folder from the Privacy list. Then give Spotlight a few minutes (or more, depending on how large your Home folder is) to index your stuff, including your Mail messages. If you want to check indexing progress, click the Spotlight icon.

Optimized subsampling: bug and workaround

(CS3 and CS5. Mac).
InDesign appears to have some really bad defaults for the printer internals of "Send Data: Optimized subsampling" in the Graphics pane of the print dialog.
We moved from an HP 8150DN to a Xerox Phaser 7500DX. On the Xerox, 1bpp images come out looking abysmal when Optimized subsampling is turned on. On the HP, they were fine. Here's a scan of the difference. The left image is optimized subsampling on the Xerox (in case you couldn't tell!); the right is "Send Data: All" on the Xerox:
Why does this happen?
Well, Adobe's documentation isn't so good, but Real World InDesign CS5 (Olav Kvern, David Blatner, and Bob Bringhurst; who is Olav, anyhow?) tells us:
Black-and-white (bi-level images). When you're printing bi-level, black-and-white images, and have selected Optimized Subsampling, InDesign matches the images it sends to the resolution of the output device. … FOR THOSE WHO REALLY WANT TO KNOW, INDESIGN GETS THE PRINTER'S RESOLUTION FROM THE DefaultResolution KEYWORD IN THE PPD.
[EMPHSIS mine]. It appears the PPD situation with the Xerox printer is fairly weird. Fundamentally, Xerox ships a PPD file that lacks a DefaultResolution keyword. So it appears that InDesign has a very bad default -- it presumes that a PPD that specifies no resolution means it should assume a resolution of 25dpi or so.
If we edit the PPD file to add:
*DefaultResolution: 600dpi
*SetResolution 600dpi: ""
then suddenly Optimized Subsampling works fine.
It turns out the reality is a bit stranger. In Xerox's Mac drivers for the 7500DX, they ship "Xerox Phaser 7500DX.mpkg", an OSX package file. Inside that file they ship several Contents/Archive.pax.gz files (basically tar files), one in Contents/Packages/xeroxPrintDriver.pkg and one in Contents/Packages/xps104.pkg. The xps104 version is the one that gets installed, it's a 724440-byte file that ends with "*% End of XR7500DX.PPD, 724439 bytes."
But the xeroxPrintDriver version is different -- among other things, it has a *DefaultResolution line:

Maybe we should just switch to using the xeroxPrintDriver version, I don't know.
Really, this situation is quite annoying. Xerox installs a print driver that lacks a *DefaultResolution, screwing over InDesign users who use the default setting of Optimized subsampling. InDesign has a horrible default that chooses 25dpi instead of 300dpi or 600dpi if no resolution is specified.
Does anyone know who the right person at Xerox is to get their side fixed? I suppose we'll submit a wishform bug report to Adobe on this (grr, I hate being a volume license customer sometimes. Maybe if I buy a single copy of InDesign at street rates then can I submit real bug reports and get useful responses and tracking numbers? Anyone know?).
Oh, some of you will ask why we use optimized subsampling at all? The short answer is that it often makes a material difference in the time to print proofs of high-resolution jobs. Of course real jobs are not printed in-house on these printers, but we do proofs all the time. And a casual benchmark showed one job going from 18 minutes to 36 minutes, and another going from 5 minutes to 18 minutes; that's from switching off Optimized Subsampling. So it does have some real value for us. (I think, though, there might be a network problem with the printer those benchmarks were done on. Not sure. But the person doing the benchmarks did them on our slowest hardware to get a worst-case estimate.)

I wouldn't put my faith in Adobe's Customer Support either. They would probably give it a half-hearted try at their end (which of course works fine because they don't use a Xerox), tell you they can't reproduce the problem, then tell you not to use optimised sub-sampling, advise you to test with some other printer, and finally state "it's not our problem, complain to Xerox" and hang up on you.

IMac G3 Won't boot up?

I have a IMac G3 slot loading and it wont boot up every time? Some times I trun it on it go to the apple and boots up. But most of the time its just a gray screen and then a fast white screen than back to gray with a folder? When it does come on it freezes when its on for maybe 10min or if I try to download to a flash drive(to remove all my stuff). I think its running 10.3.9 or some thing like that. Is There any way i can get it to work again? Also the cd/dvd burner is not working when I put a cd in it gets stuck? I read that I need to reinstall os 9. But i dont have the money to get one or where to find one. I also read I need a new hard drive but I need to get some of my stuff off .Also when its been unplug for a few and i plug it in and trun it on the light comes on then it makes a pop sound and shuts off and wont turn on unless i unplug it and plug it back in. I really like to get this IMac to work again.
Any Ideas or tips? also when I do option key then power on it wont read its hard drive?

I think the popping sound is the power supply going bad. Or maybe the fly-back-capacitor going bad.
you need to reset the Mac's PRAM, NVRAM, and Open Firmware. Shut down the Mac, then power it up, and before the screen lights up, quickly hold down the Command, Option, P, and R keys, until the Mac has chimed twice more after the powerup chime. Then, before the screen lights up, hold down Command-Option-O-F until the Open Firmware screen appears. Then enter these lines, pressing Return after each one:
reset-nvram
set-defaults
reset-all
"The reset-all command should restart your Mac. If so, you have successfully reset the Open Firmware settings."

What the problem with copying? Should be able to copy lots in 10 minutes.

You need an external FireWire drive to boot an iMac G3. Does your machine have firewire port? Get something with a power cord. The usb drive will be no faster than your flashdrive.

Hacked Message: Your Apple ID was just used to download Podcasts from the App Store on a computer or device that had not previously been associated with that Apple ID

So I just got a message from Apple saying
"Your Apple ID was just used to download Podcasts from the App Store on a computer or device that had not previously been associated with that Apple ID"
I am new to Apple products and signed up to the app store about an hour before but have not downloaded any apps yet.
I also turned on iCloud Drive.
Neither of these are Podcasts and I do not have any Podcasts on my device.
The message is a really poor warning, it could for instance list the IP address which would immediately tell me if it was me.
It could list what type of device it was.
It could list what Podcast was downloaded.
But no, just some random message, probably generated by the really bad default iPhone settings that put ease of use before security.
I have a long complex password that I do not want ot have to change just because Apple generates a stupid message.
On Google you have a log of all logins and devices, is there something similar with Apple, so I can figure this out?

I have not down downloaded any podcasts and there are no podcasts in the podcasts app, of course if Apple were to list the podcast that was downloaded, the IP address and the device it might help one dismiss the message.
I am running the latest v8.1.1 although how the version of my OS related to a message generated by Apple servers is beyond me, unless my device is not authenticating properly so Apple thinks I am someone else but then as I have not downloaded any Podcasts that would not seem to be the issue.
It does NOT say you downloaded a podcast. First, podcasts are not downloaded from the App Store; they are downloaded from the iTunes store.
It's very clear to me; the app named "Podcasts" was downloaded, not a podcast. "Podcasts" is a app provided by Apple for managing and downloading podcasts.

After Effects Plugin Error when launching

I recently installed Red Giant Knoll Light Magic Pro plugin and get the following error when launching AE CS4 9.02 on a 2.53Ghz Intel Macbook Pro with 4Gb Ram and Snow Leopard.
After Effects has encountered an error.

then I get:
After Effects can't continue: An output contract violation has occured!
then:

I have also lodged a support ticket with Red Giant but wanted to see if anyone had experienced, or could shed any light on this error code.

As a start, move the KLF plug-in out of the shared MediaCore folder (Library:Apllication Support:Adobe and something; not on my Mac ATM) to the conventional AE plug-in folder (Applications:Adobe After Effects CS4:Support Files:Plug-Ins) I've reminded my friends at RG a hundred times, but their installer stil luses bad default locations. If that doesn't fix it, then indeed you have a problem. Which version of the plug-in are you using? Most complaints revolve around v2.5's GPU usage, which is on by default and causes a lot of trouble. Older versions do not do this, so they are more stable....

Ok, cleared CMOS - installed the new cpu
everything turns on and of course BIOS says there is an error with bad/default BIOS settings so the 2.16 Ghz is running at 1.2 Ghz but I cant get it to load windows ... any ideas if this is BIOS tweaking settings, or a format is defintely needed, id like to salvage some MP3s ;[

I don't think it's time to format.
First of all you need BIOS version 1.2 or older, preferably the latest. Then clear CMOS and go with default settings. You migh need to force your FSB to 166 and set multiplier to default.

Back to back spa3102 no voice

I have 2 SPA3102na devices setup over a wan without NAT. Calls ring through to the remote device but when it's answered there is no sound, just dea space and the caller hears it continue to ring.
They are connected over a private network and local routers with no firewall in the way. When a call comes in it rings through and when answered niether the caller or reciever can hear anything.

Which seems to be the most commonly used.
Any help would be appreciated.

One thing, you can never underestimate the importance of double checking settings. I found I had a bad default gateway on one of the units. FIxed that and life is good.
Sometime you have to wal away from it for a bit.

Why has Bridge has stored 3.5 GB of data in my roaming profile?

For some reason Adobe Bridge has stored 3.5 GB of data in my roaming profile (C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming) which is then copied around the network as I log into different machines.
The data seems to be mainly a cache of images that do not need to be copied around the network especially as they have no relevance to any other machines I log into.
The Adobe support guys tell me that "We do not support roaming profiles, only the standard win users" and have referred me to these forums. If this is correct then the data should be stored in the local profile folder instead (C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local).
Is this a setting that I need to change (if so it's a pretty bad default) or is it a bug?
