Bad dissolves in DVD project

Hi, I've been having a lot of trouble with this particular project. It's a DVD project that I can't seem to get right as the dissolves are coming out terribly. The dissolves come out very slow, grainy and a little pixelated/distorted.
METHOD USED: I used to export straight from FCP (version 5.0.4) to Compressor (version 2.0.1), but I've been exporting using File/Export/Quicktime/Make Movie Self Contained/use Current Settings, then putting this file into compressor.
Firstly, are these the correct settings above to use to then import into Compressor?
Secondly, the settings I'm using in Compressor are - 16:9 PAL 90 min best VBR, two pass/bit rate was 6.2 - 7.5 and I didn't change any other settings in there. I choose dolby audio AC3. The project is 60 mins in length and I want to look as good as possible for the client.
(out of interest - when I'm doing a quick burn for a client review using File/Export/QT/movie NOT self contained/ then burn it using toast - it comes out fine - the dissolves are as they should be)
After Compressor I'm using DVDSP to build the project with chapters etc. I then use the Build then Burn to complete the master onto DVD. Are these steps the best to use?
The bad dissolves happen on both stills and video. On one particular section i knew had a bad dissolve from a previous burn, I put compression makers and it still looked really terrible.
I hope you can me help me with the right process needed on this. It's really stressful having problems with this on a regular basis.
Cheers

Hi:
Did you try exporting directly from FCP timeline through Compressor? You can make a short test with some problematic parts of your ffotage to check if you get a better quality. FCP put compression markers in your sequence edits.
Second you can try changing the MPEG2 preset from VBR to CBR:
You'll get a bigger MPEG2 file but I guess it will fit in your disc.
Do some tests with these advices and come back. You don't need to encode your full movie for the test, use IN/OUT points to select just some seconds/minutes in the parts you do know you got problems.
Hope that helps !

First, People did report problems with vbr encodes in compressor in earlier versions of compressor. not sure at what point this was fixed, but try doing a cbr encode and see if it's better. Do a short section to test rather than encode your whole project.
Second, you should be judging this on a dvd player and video monitor rather than on your computer screen unless of course your end user will be viewing on a computer.

  • I have a DVD project that takes about 14 hours to generate. Is there any way to periodically save it during encoding so power failures or other problems do not require a complete restart?

No.  Are you saving the project as a disk image rather than burning directly to disk from iDVD?  If not then that's what I suggest you do.  That will separate the encoding process from the burn process to save time and disks if the encoding is bad.  It also lets you burn a second or third disk without having to encode again.

  • Why did I loose all photos in DVD project and see only broken chain symbol?

I opened my DVD project to see only broken chain symbols where previously I had thumbnail photo images. My previous work to nearly finish this project was gone! Then, today, I opened another DVD project, a larger one, that I'd worked on also this week, and found the same thing had happened to it! I have no idea what happened. Help!

Additional details: This is getting worse. Today, I see that ALL my existing DVD projects have lost photos and have only CHAINS. I get this message: "Assets have been found in your project which have been modified externally since this project was used the last time". Do you want to automatically update your project? To which lately I am answering- Cancel. Previously, in one case, I answered, "Update." WWWV
I can see this is very bad news, but I still don't know what happened.

  • Latest dvd project won't play in DVD players...

I have a iMac G5 and iDVD 4. I use FCP to edit. I have made many DVDs from files I make with exporting my sequences to quicktime. Then I import that export into iDVD, and this has always created DVDs that play in my computer and in DVD players.
For some reason, my latest project will only make DVDs that play on my computer using this method, not any of my 3 DVD players. I've checked to make sure I'm still set to NTSC, and I am. What could be causing this? Did I change a setting in FCP that I'm unaware of?
Any help would be greatly appreciated as I've wasted a good many blank DVDs from this glitch. Thank you!

Haha. I would love the luxury to just stop and not worry about it but unforunately I need to burn the DVD. I do not have another burner, I only have my internal one built into the iMac G5 I have.
Plus if you read through, you'd see that I have successfully burned older DVD projects just fine this week. It's just this latest project that won't burn.
If you have any suggestions related to what I might have changed or what might be different in FCP, that would be helpful. Unfortunately just stopped after 10 bucks worth is not an option.

  • After rendering a movie, the DVD project screen doesn't display

    Q. After rendering a movie, my DVD project screen won't display?

Hi and welcome to the forums!
Sorry to hear about your mishap.
Do you have a backup using desktop manager? If so, your data is in there. Had you recently sync'd with outlook?
Did water get into your BB? If so, place your BB in an open container of UNCOOKED white rice and set in a warm place for a few days. Rice should absorb the water.

  • DVD Project Backup

I was recently backing up a DVD project onto a data dvd. After the disc was finished burning, I opened the project file from the disc (my first mistake.) When I saw that the project opened, I thought all was well, that is until I went to the hard drive to delete the project. To my dismay, the folder where I stored my DVD projects, all of the files had been replaced with *.par files associated with the project I backed up and opened off the disc. NONE of the other files were in the folder and i have yet to be able to find them or unerase them. Does anyone have any suggestions as to why this happened, or more importantly how I could possibly get the files back?

    PT and Lennart,
Thanks for your quick response. I've been burning DVDs of various types (data, video) for several years now, however, I've never had/needed to burn an iMovie project to a DVD (I would always archive them on another harddrive).
I'm helping a friend out, and he has 1 harddrive with very limited space. He has 6 unfinished iMovie projects, each about 15 minutes long. I figured W/6 DVDs he could free up about 18gb-24gb.
I wanted to make sure "project corruption" wouldn't be an issue.
    Thanks again

  • DVD project photos back to iPhoto

Dumb me. i made a DVD project with photos from iphoto. Worked fine. i inadvertently deleted the photos from iPhoto and want them back. Is there a way to restore them to iPhoto from the DVD project which I saved on my hard drive?

Is there a way to restore them to iPhoto from the DVD project which I saved on my hard drive?
If all you saved was the 'project' file, the answer is no. If you saved a 'project archive' file, probably.
When you do frame grabs from a DVD (using something like SnapzPro X) all you will get is a 640x480 pixel image. (But if they are all you can get, they are probably better than nothing.)
Is there any chance that you didn't deleted the original images from the camera memory card?

  • Why is my DVD project freezing when a video clip plays?

    Hi -
I have a simple Encore(CS5 Mac) project that is that is "stalling" when played.
The content of the DVD is made from an After Effects(CS5.5 Mac) project so I think I should provide information on that.  The 30sec AE project is mostly timeline animation until the last 6 seconds which is video footage.   The 7 second video clip is scaled way down from it's original dimensions and then masked off to fit in an area of the AE stage.
I rendered the AE project to a QT MOV with No compression.  In this format it was a very large file (939MB) but it played flawlessly in Quicktime on my desktop.
Then I brought that MOV into Encore as a timeline, added a one button menu,  and burned a DVD.
The prpoject plays fine until that video comes on. At that instant - the picture freezes for a few seconds - then plays for a second and then freezes again.  It does this stop and go until the video ends and then the DVD returns to the simple opening menu.
It seems to choke at the same time each time I replay it but I can't be 100% sure.  It's almost as if the disc actually stops spinning.
Why would the DVD freeze when the video content of my DVD project played?  What can I do to fix this?
    TIA some expert advice.
    JL

While I am familiar with the brand name, Imagtion, I do not know what their business model is. Some companies, like Memorex buy the cheapest blank media of that day, and rebrand it, with their logo. Others do the same thing. Poor quality blank media can cause all sorts of issues, such as hanging and skipping - hence my question.
I would do a test burn with high-quality blank media, such as Falcon, Taiyo-Yuden or Verbatim, and then burn about 4x on the speed. Test to see if that disc plays, without the skipping and hangling.
    Good luck,

  • DVD project with movie and additional files on same disk?

    Hi-
Dell 9200 (aka XPS 410), WinXP Pro SP2, Encore 2.0.
I have a DVD project that I am assembling and need to include different types of files on the same DVD. I have an educational movie that is already formatted on a stand-alone DVD (just like one you would rent from Blockbuster). It needs to go onto a DVD along with some additional supporting files in .pdf and .txt file formats. The DVD has to be able to autostart and play on both a home TV/DVD setup as well as a computer. Users also need to be able to access the additional .pdf and .txt files if it is viewed on a computer. Can these two viewing arrangements co-exist on one DVD? Seems to me that it would all work fine if I converted the stand-alone DVD movie into a something like a Quicktime or Windows Media file, created a XHTML file that can be used as an autostart menu, and then link the movie, .pdf and .txt files from there. All of this can then be burned onto one DVD that can be viewed on a computer, but I assume it would NOT be able to be viewed on a TV/DVD home setup. On the other hand, If I created a DVD using Encore I could just make an autostart screen with menu, but I don't think the menu would suppport something like linking to the .pdf and .txt documents (not that they could be viewed on a home TV/DVD setup anyway.
So, am I looking at having to make two separate DVDs--one with the movie and one with the additional .pdf and .txt materials? Would this have to go onto a dual-sided DVD? One side with the movie and one side with the additional materials? Would it be best to just convert the movie and stick all the files on one DVD? (Even though my boss hates this idea because it will reduce the quality of the current DVD movie).
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    -=Scott

eDVD is one option. It uses the Interactual Player to link to your extra content directly from the DVD material. Your other option is just to create your own separate content for use on computers. DVD players only pay attention to the VIDEO_TS folder, which must be in the root directory. If you also have an autorun.inf in the root directory, Windows-based systems will follow the instructions there rather than treating the disc as a DVD-Video disc. So you could use an autorun.inf to launch whatever you want to play on the computer (Director projector, other executable, etc.). You can add that extra stuff to the DVD either by using the "ROM Content" feature in Encore or by building to a folder and then burning your disc with other burning software (be sure to use the UDF filesystem or it won't work in DVD players).
    Notes:
    1. Mac computers will still launch whatever application is set to handle DVD-Video discs in the System Preferences (usually the Apple DVD player).
    2. If computer users need to view the DVD-Video content, you will need to give them some help in doing that. (i.e. instructions to manually launch their software DVD player, linking directly to the DVD-Video content from your Director project, providing a separate copy of the video, etc.)
    3. eDVD's effectiveness is diminished by the fact that it requires installation of the Interactual player. If the user is unwilling/unable to install software on their computer, such as many corporate/educational users, they will be unable to take advantage of the eDVD features.

  • DVD projects --saving them?

What is the difference between saving a file as a dvd project and saving it as a DVD ARCHIVE file?
    thanks

To 'archive' a project I assume you mean put files away for storage. If you use DVD media material you will have 4.7 gigs to play with. It's the same thing as using a CD to store 800mb as storage devices. Same process too.
HOWEVER -- if you want to record a CD for playback in a CD player you'll need to do more than just copy 10 songs to a CD. You need software that will conform the CD to blue-book standards (or white... I forget) anyway - beyond anyone's basic need of understanding.
IF you want to create a DVD for playback in a DVD player (from here out called a DVD) you'll need to do something similar. First order of understanding is that a DVD is a HIGHLY compressed form of storage. Yes, it might LOOK good, but only because there are more lines of resolution. Actually a DVD has LESS information on it than a VHS tape!!
Anyway - you need a piece of software to compress the video and separate the audio into mpeg2 (video) and something else for the audio.
Lucky for you - iDVD does it all by itself, or you can use Compressor to control the amount of compression and then use DVDSP to create your own DVD.
    Hope this helps.

  • Dvd Project... HELP...

How do I save a Dvd Project from my iBook G4 and burn it later on another computer? I'd heard something about it, is this possible?
    Please, i need help...
Maybe i'm wrong, but is there some way and save the project and transfer it to a PC (Windows)
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4)

ONce you are finished working with your iDVD project, you save it as a disk image. This disk image you can burn in any other computer with a DVD burner.
If the disk image is large, you will need to be patient to transfer it to another machine, (firewire is easier and faster, but there is also the option of ethernet or airport).
Now, if the machine on wich you want to burn is not a mac, you'll need to convert the dmg file (disk image, mac format) to an iso file (also a disk image, but one supported in windoes) before sending it to burn. You need to open the terminal (applications/utilities) and type:
    iutil convert /path/to/filename.dmg -format UDTO -o /path/to/savefile.iso
Replace /path/to/filename.dmg with the path and name of the existing .DMG file, and replace /path/to/savefile.iso with the desired path and name for the converted image.
That's it, your dvd project will burn as originally intended. Enjoy.

  • Create a DVD project in UFF

    Hi all.
I am wondering why I cannot create a DVD project in Upper field when most footage these days are in UFF (except DV)?
When I burn my disc, the fielding is wrong because of the default LFF setting. It also defaults to 720x576.
    I am using CS6 -  desired project - PAL, 16:9, SD.
    Many thanks, Toni

Hi, Andrew. Thank you for your prompt reply.
I am working with Pro-res 422 HQ and 422 files which are all upper.
This is not going into any editing package. AME is the default transcoder I am using for Encore.
The masters come from overseas on tape (HDCAM SR) which are then transferred to file format.
The HQ files are beautiful but once they are down converted to SD (in Encore) they really look awful.
I know how to transcode them not to be in the wrong field but I was wondering why Encore limits to only PAL DV i.e. 720x576 lower when most file formats nowadays are upper and 16:9 is almost standard. Few 4x3 television set are sold these days. I have been submitting SD 16:9 (not HD) for many months now.
Only recently have I started doing BD discs in Encore and because client wants the DVD to look exactly like the BD, I am authoring both in Encore.
I think there is no answer to this because all my graphics are also stepped as well (unlike BD).
I was hoping the Adobe Encore had a “fix” to include an aspect ratio of 16:9 as well as UFF and Progressive.
Many thanks again for your help.

  • Best settings for DVD project

I have done all of my work so far for online projects so I didn't realise that dvd always has dimensions of 720x576, and that it is only blueray which plays in full HD, until I started building a DVD project in Encore.
    I would like some advice to produce the best possible results on a dvd format;
I presume that this means I must build all my menus in photoshop to 720x576 dimensions?
But what about the video itself? It was filmed in 1920x1080, and was created on a 1920x1080 timeline in Premiere Pro, can I simply export it at as an SD file?
What I'm asking really is how should I export my project from Premiere, and build it in Encore for best possible results for DVD format?
    Thanks in advance
