Bad drive in my HP notebook

My i.t. guy did a check on my system and said this.
"The serious problem is the drive inside this machine may be fautly (Or may have been replaced). Its quite possible that you plugged in an external drive that was bad and we're seeing that information that ended about Xmas."
I bought this new from HP and never plugged in an external drive (don't even know how to use one).
He suggested HP check my drive remotely.  What should I do??????

Hi,
Try the following.
Download the IDT Audio installer on the link below and save it to your Downloads folder.
http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp59501-60000/sp59542.exe
When done, open windows Control Panel, open Device Manager and open up Sound, Video and Game Controllers.  Right click the IDT device and select Uninstall - you should also get a prompt to remove the current driver, tick the box to allow this and then proceed with the uninstall.
When complete, download and reinstall the Chipset driver on the following link.
Chipset Driver - Windows 7.
When the reinstallation has completed, shut down the notebook, unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter.
Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to launch the Start-up Menu and then select f10 to enter the bios menu.  Press f5 to load the defaults ( this is sometimes f9, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key ), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.  Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.
Let Windows fully load - it will automatically load an audio driver, but just let this complete.  Then open your Downloads folder, right click on the IDT installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation.  When this has completed, right click the speaker icon in the Taskbar and select Playback Devices.  Left click 'Speakers and Headphones' once to highlight it and then click the Set Default button - check if this has helped the issue.

    Hi Leon,
There are many well known G5 problems, but being hard on Hard Drives is not one of them.
How old & what brand/model drives were they?

  • I was working on numerous songs in Logic Pro 9, and for some reason 2 of the songs would not bounce. I get an error message: Error in parameter list / Not an existing volume, and no default volume / Bad positioning information / Bad drive number

I was doing some minor editing in Logic Pro 9.1.8, like adding some plug-ins to audio and midi tracks on numerous songs. Most of the songs I had no problem bouncing. For some reason 2 of the songs I tried to bounce kept showing me this error message:
"Error in parameter list / Not an existing volume, and no default volume / Bad positioning information / Bad drive number" result code=-50.
The songs open and play fine, but won't let me bounce. I've worked with Logic for a few years and this has never happened. Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Johnny

Fixed! Ran disk utilities and repaired my external HD.

  • Recovered photos from bad driver, but files are .ithmb, & won't convert!!!

Hi, .. My hard-drive was damaged, and Time Machine backed-up everything on the external drive, except my second iPhoto Library, called iPhoto Library-2, .. and Genius Bar couldn't find the reason, nor could they fix it. For some reason Time Machine just saved thumbnails, and the dates and the locations were all intact.
However, when the technician tried to recover data from the bad drive, using Mac Drive, Media Four, via PC, all the pictures from Library-2 has .ithmb extension. Not Library one. Library one is fine just like time-machine back-up. I used File Juicer to convert .ithmb files into readable file, but it couldn't do it.
My question is, .. Has this happened to anyone? Why the rescued files are .ithmb? Did we recover the data in a wrong way? Are the picture in Library 2 corrupted, thus damaged drive, & the thumbnails? Should we use another software to recover? Is the problem using a PC to recover instead of a Mac?
Thank you in-advance for your help. Babak
P.S. Time-Machine's back-up shows Library 2 thumbnails, under 1GB, which is no way 19,000 pictures be under 1GB, but the data recovery rescue shows 14GB. .. I'm very confused what to do. Specially, that all the pictures from my iPhone was accidentally erased the next day by iTunes, even-though I stopped the sync, somehow pictures were deleted. So, my only hope is rescuing the pictures from the bad drive.

Hi, I don't know if you're still looking for an answer, but I can tell you that you can easily convert those .ithmb files to viewable .jpgs files on your working pc. It's a bit time consuming but easy. Don't waste your money on expensive software or recovery options, because they will not work. This is freeware and it's a very small command line program. You can download it for free here:
    http://www.4shared.com/file/50707723/37b8a1ad/iThmbConv.html
    Now follow these steps:
    1. Create a new foder called Thumbs as a subdirectory of your hard drive. I assume this your C: drive. (example C:\Thumbs)
    2. Copy all the .ithmb files into this folder.
    3. Download the iThmbConv program file directly into this folder.
    4. Now, on your pc desktop, go to Start, Run and enter cmd in the box. Hit okay.
    5. When the black screen command prompt comes on, type cd.. at the end of the prompt line. Press Enter.
    6. The next line should only show C:\> If not, enter cd.. again to just show C:\>
    7. Now type cd Thumbs When you press enter, the next line should be C:\Thumbs>
    8. Assuming one of your .ithmb picture files is named T100. (They are all T and a number, so I'm using T100 as an example) Now type iThumbConv T100.ithmb
You should now see a few copies of your original .ithmb file in the Thumbs folder in a format that is viewable on your pc such as .jpg or whatever.
Repeat step #8 for each additional .ithmb file you want to convert. Then, you can ditch the the copies you don't need.
    uming, but easy.

  • Bad drive?

    Hi.
I've been using Arch Linux on an on-board ssd chip in my laptop (soldered on to the motherboard) for a few months now. Yesterday I woke the laptop from sleep and started firefox but soon it froze and Arch Linux started to act... weird. So I thought to myself "I should try rebooting" and this is what greeted me. (Arch Linux is installed on sdb) There is another hdd drive in the laptop that still works.
I googled the error and most of the posts I found about it are either bad controller, bad cable or a bad drive. In one of the posts someone suggested running smartctl (which I ran from archiso):
    smartctl 6.2 2013-07-26 r3841 [x86_64-linux-3.12.6-1-ARCH] (local build) Copyright (C) 2002-13, Bruce Allen, Christian Franke, www.smartmontools.org[3]

    >> Terminate command early due to bad response to IEC mode page
A mandatory SMART command failed: exiting. To continue, add one or more '-T permissive' options.
I also booted up gparted live and viewed sdb and there were no partitions, as if they had just dissappeared.
Everything points to the ssd chip being broken, doesn't it?
    Thanks.

Spider.007 wrote:I agree; this is a major hardware failure and will be a good reason to use your backups, and stop using that drive for any information you want to keep.
Well, unfortunately I don´t have a backup (lesson learned). I will have to make a few netctl profiles and systemd services again (yay!). All my important data (school assignments and such) are backed up on bitbucket though so that´s no problem.
But, fortunately my laptop is still in warranty so I can get it fixed.

PE 13 crashes due to incompatible video driver detected. Running on Win 7 SP1 with ATI 540v video card/driver.  Deleting bad driver file in adobe program data does not fix the problem,  it simply replaces the text file and crashes again.  My video driver is just fine.  Any help out there?

Your video card driver may be fine for something, but just not compatible with Premiere Elements 13/13.1.
For those with the display card error, the answers include
    a. assure your video card/graphics card driver version is up to date according to the web site of the manufacturer of the card -
if necessary consider a driver roll back.
    b. determine in Device Manager/Display Adapters if the computer is using 2 cards instead of 1
    c. delete the BadDrivers.txt file
the rationale for that deletion is found in post 10 of the following older post...principle applies to 13 as well as 9.
Re: Premiere Elements 9 Tryout Serious Display Problem
Have you looked for computer ATI card settings that might be more compatible with Premiere Elements 13/13.1?
When is the program crashing - just opening a new project or rather crashing if editing a particular video format at the Timeline level?

  • What's the "best" external/portable hard drive for a Mac Notebook?

I've gone through 2 completely different kinds of WD external hard drives with my Mac Notebook (late-2011, OS X Yosemite 10.10.2), and both literally burned out after only about 18 months.  The disk itself completely died and even when I took it to a computer repair store and they cracked the case open to extract the disk itself to hook up to another drive, it was still dead or wouldn't work.  I had to have it shipped out to a 3rd party data recovery service both times to have some/most of the data salvaged and recovered (and each times it cost me between $700-$1,000!).
I use my external drive as my main data source and store all of my files there due to it's portability advantages, so I probably do run these external drives pretty hard, especially when running iTunes.
Unless told otherwise, I'm getting away from the WD products for obvious reasons.
So which brand of portable external drives are the most reliable and/or "best" for Mac Notebook users?  I'm looking for something that's at least 1 TB and connects via Firewire 800.
    Thanks in advance.
    - Rob

Given the low cost of an external HD compared with the expense of data recovery services it might be an idea to buy two HD's and duplicate the data across both drives, then if one fails you still have all your data on the other which can be quickly and easily copied across to a new drive to replace the failed one - so you always have two copies of your data.

  • Print Driver Isolation: What exactly constitues a printer driver instability, failure or bad driver?

Server OS: Windows 2008 R2 Standard
The Microsoft PDI blogs and HP PDI Documentation detail PDI prevents a printer driver instability, failure or bad driver problem.
What exactly constitues a printer driver instability, failure or bad driver? They're rather vague terms. Is it specifically poorly coded drivers, drivers causing problems that are "by design" etc...
Could someone please explain how PDI knows this?
    OR
Is it simply a case of using PDI to proxy off print jobs to an isolated host process keeps it separate from the main Spool process and therefore the theory being drivers that cause a problem (any problem?) cannot interfere with the main Spool process?
    Thanks
    Alex

    Thanks for this.
The reason I ask as we're finding PDI doesn't always prevent the Spooler service from breaking. Specifically hitting 100% CPU usuage and causing the Print Server to grind to a halt.
    (namely another thread here:
    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/ea562bee-6356-49c3-ad1f-e86944a30d25/windows-2008-r2-standard-spoolsvexe-process-hitting-100-cpu-usage).
This is presuming the issue is the print driver that has been coded using "poor coding guidelines" of course. Hence the question.
"If you would like to debug a few failures, I can point to several scenarios to easily kill the process."
    How do you mean?

  • Twist - Bad Driver for WAN Miniport?

Just picked up a new Twist s230u.  Under the Device Manager, there is a yellow exclamation point warning about a bad driver for the WAN miniport.  Is this regarding the SIM card slot in the back left behind the SD card slot?  Is there a driver update available somewhere?  I've run all the Windows updates.  I tried searching these forums but did not find a solution.  Thanks.

    Hi, RedV
I've seen this issue before and have helped a few users with it. The steps to removing this issue can be found here. For your convenience, the steps are also listed below:
Open the Start menu and type Device Manager into the search box.
    Open Device Manager.
Right-click on the WAN miniport device.
    Select Update Driver Software...
Select Browse my computer for driver software
Select Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer
Uncheck the box Show comptatible devices
Pick any driver from within here. (As long as Windows installs a driver, the problem can be removed. I recommend a Bluetooth driver just for simplicity.)
Click OK at the warnings that are likely to pop up. These are just notifying you that this driver is not compatible with the WAN hardware.
Eventually the driver should install. Once it does, right-click on the device again and select Uninstall.
The problem should now go away and this error will not appear in Device Manager anymore.
    Best of luck,
    Adam

  • TS2570 This evening I installed a new internal hard drive in my Mac notebook as recommended by the Apple Store.  The Mac notebook was an older model that was purchased through Ebay and didn't come with a start-up DVD.  Where can I get a DVD to format my M

Can anyone please advise me as to how to obtain the correct DVD to re-format my new hard drive?  I had taken my computer to the nearest Apple store when I first discovered the problem with the gray screen, and was advised to purchase a new hard drive over the Internet for my computer since it was over 5 years old.  The Apple associate never mentioned anything about needing the original disc to finish the installation.  Now I've invested money in this new disc as well as the time taken to install it, and I still don't have a working Mac notebook.  How can I fix this problem without a lot of additional cost.  This computer had been my son's originally, and he can not locate the DVD that came with this Mac.  Please help!!!

I have been trying to install openSUSE 12.3 Linux on my new G500 and have been unable to do it. I think that there is a problem with the hard drive so I want to replace it. I have worked on other notebooks and they all have screws on the base that let you get to the memory and the hard drive. The G500 does not. How does it come apart?

  • Can I use the Macbook hard drive in a PC notebook?

I've decided to join the Apple community by getting the unibody Macbook very soon (probably after I see whats new at WWDC). I see that its cheaper to upgrade the hard drive and memory on a 3rd party website but I want to know if the 250gb macbook hard drive will work in a PC notebook? I have a Dell Inspiron E1505 with a Serial ATA connector for the hard drive and I see that the Macbook also uses a Serial ATA hard drive. Just wondering if this technique worked for anyone that tried it out.
    Message was edited by: JustinJ198806

Yes, but you will need to reformat the drive for your PC which cannot read/write a Mac formatted drive. There's nothing special about the drives used in Macs. They come from the same manufacturers as any other notebook drive.

I started over went to settings and changed this and began recovery process again. First error 0xe0f00013  during disk 2 searched forums and couldnt find anything.
