Bad DVD Resolution

Hello!
I am having an issue creating a nice clean DVD. I have a series of JPG files that are 300dpi (2400x1080). Basically I import them into iPhoto to be used for iDVD (version 7.0.4). I then "insert slideshow" in iDVD and put a simple fade transition on them. Then I burn the DVD. Everything looks nice and crisp, even in the iDVD preview player. But once I burn it to DVD and try to play that DVD on a computer or on a TV the resolution looks terrible. I've also tried smaller versions of these JPGS as well as TIFF files and nothing seems to help. I set the settings in iDVD to be "Professional Quality" so I thought they would look nice, but everything is really pixelated. Any help would be appreciated, thank you!

Hi
The DVD-standard is the limit - not iDVD - So there are no other product that can
do better (except pro tools that costs $$$$$$$)
So DVD-Studio Pro - Has a HD-DVD function - BUT to be played on What ?
only a few Toshiba DVD-playes can do this but most Macs Can't !
alt approach is
Roxio Toast™ 10 Pro incl BD-component
Here is bundled a program FotoMagico™ - To create the SlideShow
Then one can - encode and burn out on standard DVDs but as Blu-Ray (only short ones 20-30 min)
To be played on BD-Player or PlayStation3.
Can't be played on Mac (except with Roxio-Player (can't play BD-Disks - need blue laser))
or - get a BD-burner and BD-disks - resulting in full Blu-Ray products.

  • Confirm hypothesis: bad DVD's & print to tape due to external drive format

I bought anexternal drive about three months ago. Ever since that purchase my DVD's have had continuous errors. (locking up, massive pixelation, just won't be recognized). The interesting part was not all DVD players had a problem-some played fine.
We thought bad DVD's, corrupt files, bad burner--all have been checked and was in to APPLE three times. I just opened the "info" on my external-that I thought I completed a Mac format-is labeled as MS-DOS (Fat32). I've heard FAT 32 can "silly errors". Can this be my problem.
After you call me "an idiot" can you confirm my hypothesis? As was recommended yeterday here, I will be formatting this external to "Mac OS X extended" shortly

FAT formatted drives have file size limits. FAT 32 is 4 GB, I think. If your file is larger it gets broken into chunks.
An hour of DV footage is just under 13GB, so that would be broken into four chunks. The fun starts when you delete or move one of those chunks as it makes the rest useless.
While this might be playing a part in your current issues, there could be something else going wrong too. Reformat your drive as Mac OS Extended -at least you have then closed off that avenue.
Don't forget that reformatting will also erase the drive completely.

  • Macbook bad DVD drive how to install windows in bootcamp

My macbook has a bad DVD drive. I just upgraded it to snow leopard and want to install windows using bootcamp. Unfortunately when the windows installation starts the machine reboots but does not seem to be able to detect the windows disc in an external dvd that I have attached to it. I tried two different usb dvd readers and finally a firewire one I had laying around to no avail.
without the DVD drive working, how can I get it to install Windows?
thanks very much in advance for any help

    Hi Amy
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
This particular forum is for student software developers so you might not get an answer to your question. I suggest you post it again, but this time to one of the Boot Camp forums. Maybe someone there will have the answer you want.
    Best wishes and good luck

  • Bad DVD burns

In the last few days I have been experiencing a number of bad DVD burns. Wasted about six discs. The playback hangs up part way through.
I finally resorted to "Toast". It gives me good burns everytime, but I miss the themes of iDVD. The recordings are of lectures and are about 1.25 hrs in length with some stills and music. I have done this many many times before with no problems. I let iDVD do the rendering of the stills.

    Hi
Just some thoughts about DVD-Quality. Unstructured collection.
Can may be be of help.
    DVD quality
    1. iDVD 8 has three levels of qualities.
iDVD 6 has the two last ones
    • Professional Quality (movies up to 120 min.) - BEST
    • Best Performances (movies less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD
    • High Quality (in iDVD08) / Best Quality (in iDVD6) (movies up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
    2. From
    • FCE/P - Export out as full quality QuickTime.mov (not selfcontaining, no conversion)
    • iMovie x-6 - Don't use ”Share/Export to iDVD” = destructive even to movie project and especially so
when the movie includes photos. Instead just drop or import the iMovie movie project icon (with a Star on it) into iDVD theme window.
    • iMovie’08 not meant to go to iDVD. Go via Media Browser or rather use iMovie HD 6 from start.
    3. I use Roxio Toast™ to make an as slow burn as possibly eg x1 (in iDVD’08 this can also be set)
This can also be done with (Apple) Disk Util tool.
    4. There has to be about or more than 25Gb free space on internal (start-up) hard disk. iDVD can't
use an external one as scratch disk (if it is not start-up disc).
    5. Verbatim ( also recommended by many - Taiyo Yuden DVDs - I can’t get hold of it to test )
    6. DVD-R (no +R or +/-RW)
    7. Keep NTSC to NTSC - or - PAL to PAL when going from iMovie to iDVD
    8. Don’t burn more than three DVD at a time - but let the laser cool off for a while befor next batch.
    iDVD quality also depends on:
    • HOW much free space is there on Your internal (start-up) hard disk. Go for approx 25Gb.
less than 5Gb and Your result will most probably not play.
    • What kind of movie project You drop into it. MPEG4 seems to be a bad choice.
other strange formats are .avi, .wmv, .flash etc. Convert to streamingDV first
Also audio formats matters. I use only .aiff or from miniDV tape Camera 16-bit
strange formats often problematic are .avi, .wmv, audio from iTunes, .mp3 etc
Convert to .aiff first and use this in movie project
    • What kind of standard - NTSC movie and NTSC DVD or PAL to PAL - no mix.
(If You need to change to do a NTSC DVD from PAL material let JESDeinterlacer3.2.2 do the conversion)
(Dropping a PAL movie into a NTSC iDVD project
(US) NTSC DVDs most often are playable in EU
(EU) PAL DVDs most often needs to be converted to play in US
UNLESS: They are plabacked by a Mac - then You need not to care
    • What kind of DVDs You are using. I use Verbatim DVD-R (this brand AND no +R or +/-RW)
    • How You encode and burn it. Two settings prior iDVD08
    Pro Quality (only in iDVD08)
Best / High Quality (not always - most often not)
Best / High Performances (most often my choise)
    1. go to iDVD pref. menu and select tab far right and set burn speed to x1 (less errors = plays better) - only in iDVD08
    2. Project info: Select Professional Encoding - only in iDVD08.
    Region codes:
iDVD - only burn Region = 0 - meaning - DVDs are playable everywhere
DVD Studio pro can set Region codes:
    1 = US
    2 = EU

  • I have a mid 2009 macbook pro with a bad dvd drive. Can I use an external drive?

Is there an external CD/DVD drive that will work on a mid 2009 macbook pro with a bad SuperDrive?

    Hi parrotdawg,
Please look at this post first:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/25385804#25385804
If that doesn't help, I have a Samsung SE-208AB/TSBS External DVD-Writer that works well with my mid-2007 MBP 15".  Note this this drive requires 2 USB ports but doesn't use an external power adapter.  Also, the above trick worked for me after I got this drive, so now I use it a Region 2 DVD player.

  • Bad DVD quality. Camera or Settings?

    Hello.
I've recently finished a DVD for my high school's drama department. I'll fess up right away and say my camera (a Sony HDR-HC3 HDV minidv... 5 years old) isn't the best to film in extremely low light conditions. It doesn't look ungodly on my computer however (im sure the macbook pro's glossy screen helps this).
When put onto a DVD and played back onto the 46 in HD TV, it looks pretty bad.. i guess its passible for a high school show DVD, but im hoping to get into more professional settings (school for video production), and this would be mocked and i'd never have a job again.
The project, was quite long (about 136 minutes) so when i was finished editing within FCP (and color correcting the footage to reduce graininess with an external monitor) I rendered, then exported as a reference file. Imported to Compressor, applied the 150 DVD Best. I upped the bitrate to around 5mbps (just enough to fit the video onto a 4.7 gb DVD) and set the deinterlace filter to Best.
So camera quality, bad/dark lighting, inconsistent lighting vs. DVD compressor settings?
I would like to lean towards the camera/environment. I'm saving for the Canon XA10 AVCHD HD Pro Camcorder which has great low light picture quality.. im hoping this will help the quality of my DVD's.
    Any insight?
    Thanks!

    That was harsh..
Okay, there's obviously things I could have done differently. I wasn't really aware of being able to rent equipment (for cheap) in my area. I've seen stuff advertised online for lower end professional cameras but those still run around more than a $100.00 per day, and my budget isn't what I would consider to be flexible. Also, I was literally asked by the director to film the show the day of the performance. There wasn't much room for obtaining better equipment, BUT I will keep that in mind for the next time.
The tapes, okay I was idiotic. But I think its best to know you did that was stupid in order to never do it again.
As far as the video that was shot, i'm not sure how I could have made it look better given my lighting conditions. I used what manual controls I had, and it made the scenes with the lighting scheme I was adjusted to look good, but it had issues adjust to rest. My biggest problem was artifacts and graininess in the black areas. Im not saying there isn't much i have to learn about getting the shot, but i feel like the camera was limiting in its low light capabilities. Of course, I should have rented something better.
As far as the editing portion of it goes, that is my strongest point and the area I want to focus on in college. I filmed the show on 2 nights and combined footage/audio bits from both nights. This included cross dissolve shots between near and far shots (from 2 different nights) and matching them so they appear to have been from the same show. This also involved mixing the audio in a way that one couldn't tell when the "transition" from audio night 1 and audio night 2 took place. During the orchestra bits there were parts where they messed up on one night, and played it perfectly the next night, so I combined orchestra audio and had them fade into eachother. The end product makes it seems like the orchestra played perfectly. So in some ways i don't lack the creative ability to work with what i have.
I burned a couple more test copies and it looks fine on a standard def TV, and the sound is the best i've ever had. It doesn't look the way i would love it too on the 46 inch, but its better than previous theatre projects since i went through and color corrected all the clips.
Like i said, its a learning experience.. sometimes being harsh is what gets one to learn.

  • Low and bad screen resolution with radeonhd [SOLVED]

    Hi Archers,
I just setted up a brand new PC with an ATI HD4550 GPU and a 22'' 1680x1050 monitor.
I can run Xorg and even Gnome using the radeonhd drivers, but the max resolution I can get is 1280x1024 (which isn't even the correct ratio).
The lower suggested resolutions' ratios are bad as well.
    I didn't write an xorg.conf file.
When I try to run X with a configuration file generated by X -configure, the monitor displays an error message like "Unsupported video signal".
    What can I do?

  • Bad image resolution on TV when mirroring.

I have AppleTV HD and Macbook Air (OS10.8.1). Mirroring worked pretty nice for 3 months, but recently the image on my TV started to have very bad resolution and slow response to image changes. I checked out all wires, internet connection, reset all devices, including TV multiple times. Nothing helped out!
    Any advice?

I had this same problem and I think I just found a solution. Turn on your Apple TV. BEFORE turning on the mirroring, change the output audio on your computer to Apple TV in System Preferences. After that, turn on the mirroring and the sound should be coming out of your tv."

  • Bad DVD quality

Imported video as "large" from Sony HDR SR12. burned a DVD using Toast 11. I realize Std def on a 40" LCD is not ideal but I expected better. I have Blu ray  and plan to burn HD or BD but some friends do not. Render the movie in Imovie and then burn or import the raw footage into Toast and burn?  I tried to increase the Mbps to 7-8 in Toast but that extended my approx 1 hour video to 2 disks needed? I otherwise tried to use the best quality settings. Any tips appreciated!

    Hi
May be my notes can give an idea ?
    DVD quality
    1. iDVD 08, 09 & 11 has three levels of qualities. (version 7.0.1, 7,0.4 & 7.1.1) and iDVD 6 has the two last ones
    • Professional Quality
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - BEST (but not always for short movies e.g. up to 45 minutes in total)
    • Best Performances
(movies + menus  less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD (Can be best for short movies)
    • High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6)
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
Menu can take 15 minutes or even more - I use a very simple one with no audio or animation like ”Brushed Metal” in old Themes.
    About double on DL DVDs.
    2. Video from
    • FCE/P - Export out as full quality QuickTime.mov (not self-containing, no conversion)
    • iMovie x-6 - Don't use ”Share/Export to iDVD” = destructive even to movie project and especially so
when the movie includes photos and the Ken Burns effect NOT is used. Instead just drop or import the iMovie movie project icon (with a Star on it) into iDVD theme window.
    • iMovie’08 or 09 or 11 are not meant to go to iDVD. Go via Media Browser or rather use iMovie HD 6 from start. (Share to Media Browser and as Large (not HD or other res.) (I never use "Share to iDVD" any version of iMovie)
    3. I use Roxio Toast™ to make an as slow burn as possibly e.g. x4 or x1 (in iDVD’08 or 09  this can also be set)
This can also be done with Apple’s Disk Utilities application when burning from a DiskImage.
    4. There has to be about or more than 25Gb free space on internal (start-up) hard disk. iDVD can't
use an external one as scratch disk (if it is not start-up disc). For SD-Video - if HD-material is used I guess that 4 to 5 times more would do.
    5. I use Verbatim ( also recommended by many - Taiyo Yuden DVDs - I can’t get hold of it to test )
    6. I use DVD-R (no +R or +/-RW) - DVD-R play’s on more and older DVD-Players
    7. Keep NTSC to NTSC - or - PAL to PAL when going from iMovie to iDVD
(I use JES_Deinterlacer to keep frame per sec. same from editing to the Video-DVD result.)
    8. Don’t burn more than three DVDs at a time - but let the laser cool off for a while before next batch.
    iDVD quality also depends on.
    • DVD is a standard in it self. It is Standard Definition Quality = Same as on old CRT-TV sets and can not
    deliver anything better that this.
HD-DVD was a short-lived standard and it was only a few Toshiba DVD-players that could playback.
These DVDs could be made in DVD-Studio Pro. But they don’t playback on any other standard DVD-Player.
Blu-Ray / BD can be coded onto DVDs but limited in time to - about 20-30 minutes and then need
    _ Roxio Toast™ 10 Pro incl. BD-component
_ BD disks and burner if full length movies are to be stored
_ BD-Player or PlayStation3 - to be able to playback
The BD-encoded DVDs can be play-backed IF Mac also have Roxio DVD-player tool. Not on any standard Mac or DVD-player
Full BD-disks needs a BD-player (in Mac) as they need blue-laser to be read. No red-laser can do this.
    • HOW much free space is there on Your internal (start-up) hard disk. Go for approx. 25Gb.
less than 5Gb and Your result will most probably not play.
    • How it was recorded - Tripod vs Handheld Camera. A stable picture will give a much higher quality
    • Audio is most often more critical than picture. Bad audio and with dropouts usually results in a non-viewed movie.
    • Use of Video-editor. iMovie’08 or 09 or 11 are not the tools for DVD-production. They discard every second line resulting in a close to VHS-tape quality.
iMovie 1 to HD6 and FinalCut any version delivers same quality as Camera record in = 100% to iDVD
(If You need to change to do a NTSC DVD from PAL material let JES_Deinterlacer_3.2.2 do the conversion)
(Dropping a PAL movie into a NTSC iDVD project
(US) NTSC DVDs most often are playable in EU
(EU) PAL DVDs most often needs to be converted to play in US
UNLESS. They are play-backed by a Mac - then You need not to care
    • What kind of DVDs You are using. I use Verbatim DVD-R (this brand AND no +R or +/-RW)
    • How You encode and burn it. Two settings prior iDVD’08 or 09
Pro Quality (only in iDVD 08 & 09)
Best / High Quality (not always - most often not)
Best / High Performances (most often my choice before Pro Quality)
    1. go to iDVD pref. menu and select tab far right and set burn speed to x1 (less errors = plays better) - only in iDVD 08 & 09
(x4 by some and may be even better)
    2. Project info. Select Professional Encoding - only in iDVD 08 & 09.
    Region codes.
iDVD - only burn Region = 0 - meaning - DVDs are playable everywhere
DVD Studio pro can set Region codes.
    1 = US
    2 = EU

What it turned out to be was the "quality" settings in iDVD. The total clip time was NOT over 2 hours or 4.7GB, yet iDVD created massive visual artifacts on the "professional quality" setting.
I switched the settings to "high quality" which solved the problem. According iDVD help, "high quality" determines the best bit rate for the clips you have.
I have NEVER seen iDVD do this before, especially when I was under the 2 hour and 4.7GB limits.
For anyone else, there seem to be 2 places in iDVD to set quality settings, the first is under "preferences" and the second under "project info." They do NOT seem to be linked (i.e. if you change one, the other is NOT changed). take care, Mario
TO GET IT TO WORK SLIGHTLY FASTER
    • Minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up hard disk
    • No other programs running in BackGround e.g. Energy-Saver
    • Don’t let HD spin down or be turned off (in Energy-Save)
    • Move hard disks that are not to be used to Trash - To be disconnected/turned off
    • Goto Spotlight and set the rest of them under Integrity (not to be scanned)
    • Set screen-saver to a folder without any photo - then make an active corner (up right for me) and set
pointer to this - turns on screen saver - to show that it has nothing to show

  • Creating bad DVDs

My daughter got new MacBook for graduation and loves it very much. Everything works fine except that if copying or creating video DVDs they come out bad. Sound is there but picture is vertical colored lines or some kind of heavy pixelation that is unrecognizable.
I am suspecting that first time when she went to play DVD that she didn't select right region or something like that. Somewhere in settings I saw that NTSC is selected. I don't know how to change or fix this problem. Please help, thank you in advance
    Zack

Copying commercial DVD releases does not work with any software from Apple. It is technically illegal to do this, and although it can be done, nobody here would be allowed to discuss or promote the ways to get around any copyright issues. You will need to check with online forums that do. Google.
If you are having problems with iDVD not making playable discs of content you've created, then let's focus on the exact methods and settings you are using.
Future posts about iDVD should be made in the forum for that purpose:

  • Can't get rid of Untitled DVD.fpbf after trying to write onto bad DVD

I apparenlty had a bad set of DVDs, which I discovered by having tried to back up some data onto them. Fair enough. But the problem occurs after the bad disc is discovered. When finder discovers (and reports) that the disc is bad, I am forever unable to "remove" the burn folder entries listed on the lower-left panel of the finder window. This happens for every disc fails, so I now have a list of these unremovable burn folders down there. I can't drag them to the trash can, and I can't open them (the error says the folder can't be found).
    what now?

It seems to me there are only two possiblities:
    1. The aborted burn folder actually still exists somewhere and so keeps reappearing, or
    2. A permanent entry for it got recorded to the sidebar plist file even though the thing is actually gone
If it is there but no longer visible a search using something that sees invisibles, such as find in the Terminal or EasyFind should turn it up. If it exists only in the Sidebar's imagination, then removing
    "/Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/com.apple.sidebarlists.plist"
and logging out/in should get rid of the spurious entries.

  • Premiere Elements 11 burning a DVD resolution issue

Why is it when I take an Elements 11 slide show wmv file and burn it to a DVD, using the maximum resolution and selecting the NTSC widescreen Dolby DVD option, the resolution degrades?

    TysenM
    Thanks for the follow up.
What are these fixes for both Photoshop Elements 11 and Premiere Elements 11 to which you refer? Just curious about that.
Let us back up a little.
What are the pixel dimensions of your photos and how many of them do you have in this presentation? For now I am assuming that you dealing with photos that have pixel dimension equal of greater than 1920 x 1080. Please let us know if that is not the case.
I would like you to take a few as is and import them into a Premiere Elements 11 project with the project preset that you set manually.
    a. File Menu/New/Project
    b. In the new project dialog, set for NTSC/DSLR/1080p/DSLR 1080p30. Be sure to place a check mark next to "Force Selected Project Settings on this Project" before you exit the new project dialog.
    c. Then back in the Premiere Elements 12 Expert workspace, use Add Media/Files and Folders/ to get some of those photos into Project Assets and from there to the Timeline.
    d. If an orange line exists over the Timeline content, then render that Timeline content by pressing the Enter key of the computer main keyboard.
See what that looks like at playback in the Edit Mode monitor?
Are you making your comparisons based on what you see in the monitor or are you actually taking the Timeline content to DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc (Publish+Share/Disc/DVD disc). From what you wrote, it sounds like you are. What are you using for viewing?
Here I would ask this question...just before you would hit Burn in the burn dialog, what does the Quality Area in the burn dialog show for Space Required and Bitrate?
    Thanks.

  • DVD Resolution

After completing a slide show and burning a DVD, on reply of the new DVD,  the photos are of poor quality and out of focus.  What do I need to do to have sharp photos burned to the DVD?  The photos were sharp, high resolution jPeg images when imported to iDVD for the slide show production.  There was no applied Ken Burns effect, and the only alteration of the photos in iDVD was the addition of labels.  Is there any way to get qualty approximating high definition on the DVD whe using iDVD?

    DVDs are standard definition devices.
    For best results:
Use 720 x 540 pixels for standard 4:3 video in NTSC and 854 x 480 pixels for widescreen video in NTSC.
Use 768 x 576 pixels for standard 4:3 video in PAL and 1024 x 576 pixels for widescreen video in PAL.
Using larger images can actually reduce the image quality due to the resizing done by Quicktime.
If you have a Blu-ray player, Roxio's Toast Titanium comes with a Blu-ray plugin that lets you create short Blu-ray compatible discs using standard DVDs and your Mac's burner.  Note I said :"Blu-ray compatible discs"; these are not true Blu-ray discs and may not play in all players that play Blu-ray media.  Such discs can be in true HD image size.

  • DVD Resolution from iDVD...Gotta be better that what I'm seeing!!!

Hello...I've created a DVD using iDVD and their stock templates. The results in the program when previewing after building the slideshow look as expected. Good image quality...color and sharpness. However, when writing to a DVD, the images become soft, fuzzy and unacceptable. Tried it a couple of times using different resolved images (72dpi and at 300dpi jpegs). Also tried changing the preferences to Professional Quality...which actually looked worse than the base setting. Even the type generated in iDVD was softer than it should be.
Just looking for a DVD that looks as good as any screen image with crisp, sharp imagery.
Thanks in advance for your ideas.

Then you are a prime candidate for Blue-Ray (which unfortunately is not yet supported on most macs).
A standard burned iDvd won't make you very happy since it is at best about a third of a MP in terms of resolution...... Not much to brag about. Hence it's the wrong tool for you and so is apple's dvd player app which doesn't yet support Blue-ray playback.
You'll get some support for Blue-Ray in Roxio Toast 9 and limited support within DVDSP / FCS2.

  • Bad DVD after burning

I have created a photo presentation (for watching at TV) based on iDVD and burned with internal iMac tool. But the result is a DVD with very bad photo quality. I tried it with diffrent types of DVDs (DVD-R, DVD-RW). What was wrong?

I have the same problem exactly: iMovie project looks great on my iMac, but after Media Browser (HD 1080p) is done and I burn it on iDVD the result is of very poor quality. Can someone at Apple give us some answers??? Thanks.
