Bad framerate playing games

Hello,
I have a new imac 20" with 2.0 Ghz intel core 2 duo, 2GB ram and ATI Radeon HD 2400 pro with 128 mb.
and when i try palying alot of games the framerat is so bad I can't even play them. I have WoW, warcraft 3 and starcraft and they work fine(but they are dated games) but WoW's framerate is around 15 frames per second on average(which isnt the best). when I try to play Doom 3 or Quake 4 the framerate is really bad even on low settings is there a reason for this because when I had a pc my graphics card was very old but i was still able to play doom 3 on high settings decently i didnt even have 1 GB of rame. is it just because of the OS or is it because the Graphics card is bad or what? I even tried an older game unreal tournament 2004 and i couldnt even move because of the framerate.
Could anyone help me please?
(also when i get OS X 10.5 and put windows vista on there because i get it free from school will i be able to play games better?)

I have a much older iMac than you (2Ghz G5 with 2 Gig of ram and 128 Meg Ati Card) and Wow runs for me at a frame rate from 30 fps (crowded areas) to a cool 60 fps. There are a few things you may need to change in your graphic settings in WoW to get better rates.
Firstly, turn off the full screen glow effect in the graphic options. This can sometimes knock as much as 15-20 fps from the full frame rate and, in my opinion, can make the graphics rather soft anyway.
Secondly, reduce the overall resolution.
Third, adjust the graphic sliders in the game options to a much lower level (especially terrain distance). You may not get an awesome looking game, but it will run smoothly.
Finally, put Animation LOD on.
WoW runs significantly faster on Windows machines on the whole. As do most games. The Mac, as much as I adore it, is not yet at a level where it can compete with good PCs, spec for spec. My work PC runs WoW with all the settings on maximum at the top resolution on a 30 inch monitor with no loss in performance. OpenGL, the Mac graphic core seems to be slower than Direct X/D3D on Windows.
I would guess that Boot Camp Windows on the Mac may have better performance from games compared to the same game in OSX. My guess, as I don't have an Intel Mac yet.

Choosing gpu when playing games

Hi,
I own a hp g6-2305sl running win 8.1, it's not a bad laptop, the only thing I can't control is the gpu when playing games.
I have AMD catalyst 14.9 and HD Intel driver 153330, but when I go to device manager there is only AMD HD 7600M series and not AMD HD 7670M. And also even if I select maximize performance and set the high performance gpu for games, game is slow has hell, like using the Intel gpu.

Looking for help in making my computer good enough to play games

I bought a computer from Best Buy right after Christmas. It's a HPE-410y. I'm pretty happy with it in terms of speed and ease of use. I'm glad to be finally done with freaking Vista and blue screens of death.
Anyho, a buddy of mine wants me to play Bad Company 2 with him. I don't know much about the game other than its a shooter. However, I did read in the editoral review that the ATI 5570 my computer came with is weak. Also, 300Watt power supply needs to be upgraded as well? Do you think a graphics card/power supply upgrade is all I need? hmmm
I have glanced at the graphics cards at Best Buy when I've been up there, but not exactly sure what will work, what is good. Looking for any advice and help on what I should possible buy to get this computer good enough to play games. I wanna do this maybe the end of next month. My budget is 450 bucks. I don't need to pay to have any upgrades I decide to get installed, my brother can help me do that. I just need help in what to buy.

yes input lag could be an issue for FPS shooters
else should be fine. most of modern monitors/TVs has special mode to bypass certain internal circuitry to reduce the input lag
you need to set the input to "game mode", once done for your TV input lag will be reduced to around 16ms,

That would depend if you have the potrait orientation lock - on.
If you see a lock icon with an arrow around it on top of the home screen next to your battery then that means you have it enabled.
to disable swipe up from the bottom of the phone (near home button) to access the control center, hit that icon.

Restart your device

Ideapad Y510P overheating when playing games...help

Idk anything about your model of laptop, but i have the z580 that gets really warm too. 78 - 82*C when playing games like Starcraft 2. I have a desktop computer fan that runs of USB. + a 18$ cooling pad. But they both only keep the laptop 1 - 3 *c diffrence. So.. Idk what to do there ither. unless I just take off the bottom of the **bleep** thing and set it on a window box fan... loool or spend 100$ on a better cooling pad.. Idk. but even the more expesnsive ones have reviews saying only 1-5*c in diffrence. And i cant find anyone that knows how to reccommend a good cooling pad. Everyone I tlak to just says it means its a **bleep**y laptop and to upgrade. But thats not useful...

My Y500 got a little hot, so I bought a Logisys Computer Dual 140mm Fan Aluminum Laptop Cooling Pad Model NP8. Best $20 I've spent... It comes on when I turn the computer on, and it stays cool, which in turn will make the laptop last longer.Heat is bad for the electronics, and the number one cause, besides the hard drive, for laptop failures. I agree with the reviews, in that the aluminum corners are very sharp, but it's easily remedied with some fine sandpaper. It's quiet, and totally effective! Thermaltake's fancy lighted big single fan is a joke; the fan died a few days after the 90 day warranty. I recommend the dual, or tripple fan setups, in fact I was deciding between the Logisys, and another aluminum cooling fan setup, where you could place the fans where they would do the most good, right by the vent openings on the bottom of the laptop.

It is normal. Same with all devices, be it an Apple, Samsung or BlackBerry.
Games will consume much more power than usual applications. Because it requires more graphics processing thus, more power is consumed. In order for the power to be fed, more electricity is used, hence, battery will be drained faster. Both the faster battery drain and increase in computation results in more heat generated

Satellite A660 freezes during playing games and recovery

I have problem with my Toshiba Satellite A660. Sometimes when I play games it freezes and I can't even move the pointer I all freeze then I have to shut it down with force.
One time it freezes during a recovery and that what make me worried about it would be a high (amount of money) problem.
I tried to take it to a what it call itself a Toshiba-service company and they told me that the problem is solved but it didn't.
So I hope any would help me Im in a bad situation here.

I can also understand you dude and it must be a hardware malfunction if recovery installation from Toshiba recovery disk doesnt work. I mean usually this shouldnt be a problem because this image is pretestd by Toshiba and shouldnt make any problems.
In your situation I would talk with the service company again. You can ask what they did exactly and if they can check the unit again because you problems with .
Just explain the situation a little bit.
As Mike30 wrote, if you play games use high performance power plan and put the notebook on a clean desk to ensure the notebook is getting enough air and the fan will not be blocked.

Dont worry, the same was happend to me too. Im sure the probles is already "solved", just restart your notebook and the resolution is 1600x900 again.

i played the a lil bit, it was okay.
but overheat problem, 1-2 seconds textures loading, and sometimes low fps.
but i have to say - its not so bad cause this game isnt even interesting, it very typical.
like stalker.
but i play battlefield 3 beta whit highest graphic and high fps! but these overheating problem >.<

Pillars Crashes after Character Creation during cutscene,

I update every day
i dont know what else to add.
EDIT: Dota 2 only crashes when playing online (eg the main part of the game), However playing againts bots does not cause this crash

Laptop ThinkPad W701 turns off while playing games...

I got this laptop for 2 years and it has never done this before. Two weeks ago it started turning off when I played games like Skyrim or Europa Universalis 4.
The laptop is hot at the place where the graphic card is located but the fan seems to be working...and PC doctor has no error.
I disassembled the laptop and cleaned it from dust but it did not work...
I tried different drivers (for quadro fx 2800m) and now I have installed the 326.80 beta, but it's still the same...
I don't know what to do, I'm so angry that i'm considering to buy a Dell Alienware... can someone help me, please?

I'll reinstall Win7 in a week to be sure it isn't an other problem.
I uninstalled one device in the device manager, it was an ATI device, I installed a recommended benchmark so that was it's device I guess.
As you said, I took a look into the Event Viewer, by the way thanks for that I didn't know that there is some kind of program :) , and there is one event that matches to the time, the display turns black. Maybe my translation won't be the best one :S

IMac Freezes While Playing Games

When playing games (BioShock Infinite, Starcraft, Civ 5) my iMac will suddenly completely freeze: no mouse movement, no keyboard responses, nothing. Occassionally the audio will stutter and repeat over and over again for a second or two before stopping. The only way to do anything is to turn off the computer and turn it back on.
It seems to happen at random times, but only when playing these games, which makes me think it may have to do with the video card.
If anyone has any ideas, I would love some help!

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with "Model Identifier." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
