Bad game performance, but, why?

I got my new computer yesterday. It's a macintosh 2ghz 20-inch iMac, with Memory of 512 mb ram and under the memory section in about this computer it says its running at 667mhz. I have 256mb ATI Radeon X1600 graphics card and 207.96 gb free in my macintosh HD.
I have been having really crappy game performance. THe only game I have is UT2004, but I can't play it at all with the graphics turned up, and while single player works once i put them down to average quality, but even at LOWEST quality multiplayer is really hiccupy. Why is this and can I fix it?

  • BIOS flash resulting in bad game performance?

    Motherboard: K8N Neo2 Platinum
    Yesterday I flashed my BIOS to version 1.C, because of problems when rebooting the computer from Windows (booting would get stuck at the Gigabit Boot Agent, until network cable was removed).  The flash was successful, however I noticed a great decrease in game performance after booting into Windows.  Games like WoW and F.E.A.R. Combat had their fps reduced to less then 30 fps, where 40-50 fps were not abnormal before the flash.
    I talked to a few people about this and due to their advice I tried reinstalling the motherboard and graphics card drivers.  To no avail.  3DMark2001 benchmarks showed a score of 11000, where I got a score of 15000 when I tested my rig a few months ago.
    This morning I completely formatted my Windows drive and reinstalled Windows, including all new drivers for motherboard, graphics card, you name it.  Still my 3DMark2001 score won't go beyond 11600.
    I checked everything possible in BIOS and Windows:
    CPU settings are ok,
    memory settings are ok,
    harddisks are configured for UltraDMA5,
    graphics card core and mem clocks are ok,
    all possibly performance reducing services and programs are shut down.
    I can't think of anything else reducing my computer's performance, but can't also think of the BIOS influencing this performance.

    Should I try reflashing the BIOS, and if so:
    a) to which version?
    b) is reinstalling of drivers really necessary?

ALso troed to reset your BIOS by removing the CMOS battery and leave it for 10-30 min make sure you've removed the power cord as well as power connectors and load all the default setting before you need to reflashed it again.     I don't fully understand this part of your reply.  Should I first remove the battery and then reflash the BIOS?  What's the difference between removing the battery and resetting the BIOS with the JBAT jumper?
    And what are the modifications of the Syar BIOS compared to the MSI 1.C BIOS?  Will it resolve my problem?

  • Steam bad game performance

    My system is 64bit Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3210M CPU @ 2.50GHz with Nvidia G635M  on my lapton. There are a lot of post in Internet saying that Left for dead 2 in Linux has more fps than in windows. But for me on Windows everything is smooth, but on Linux game freeze for a second sometimes, game video settings is the same on both systems.

    At topic, that I pointed to, author wrote that he deleted lib32-libtxc_dxtn, but I can't because lib32-mesa-dri requires lib32-libtxc_dxtn

    Hello!
    My system is 64bit Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3210M CPU @ 2.50GHz with Nvidia G635M  on my lapton. There are a lot of post in Internet saying that Left for dead 2 in Linux has more fps than in windows. But for me on Windows everything is smooth, but on Linux game freeze for a second sometimes, game video settings is the same on both systems.
    I've found this post https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1284496 . There Svenstaro say "Your 32bit chain is completely broken..." how did he find it out? Is my 32bit chain is broken too?

    At topic, that I pointed to, author wrote that he deleted lib32-libtxc_dxtn, but I can't because lib32-mesa-dri requires lib32-libtxc_dxtn

  • Bad Game Performance on MacBook Pro Retina

    I've been getting below average performance on my the 15" Retina (2012) with all sorts of games lately. I did the SMC Reset and nothing works. I tested it out on Bootcamp with Windows 8 and Windows 7 and the gaming performance seems to be lower than what it usually was.
    I have a feeling it may be related to the Throttling done on my GPU, I tested it out on windows and it seems that my GPU Clock is usually running at around 500 to 725 it never reaches the 900MHz and the tempratures is always around 95 degrees.
    Any ideas ?

    If you are serious about games, get a PC.  Macs are not good gaming platforms.

  • Bad game performance: "Tibia" - need help to find the error

    im playing a game called tibia (www.tibia.com) for a long time, back on windows i had no problems with the programm(except that windows itself crashed sometimes while playing ;P).
    since some time they made an linux client again and i tryed it on my pc, running arch with all updates.
    my problem is that sometimes when (probably to much) pictures like garbage and player are shown on the screen(its an 2d mud inspired by ultima) i get performence issues, the program is freezing 2 seconds before i can view another level, just to say an example.
    via "top" i watched what kicks in that uses my cpu so much and it is X.
    ok, now i dont realy know where this post belongs, more here or into newbie's corner, but:
    as i said before i have every possible update for arch and the installed programms.
    i got an geforce fx 5200 with the newest driver(manualy installed because the installer via pacman whont have the new driver because of an outdatet kernel, atleast that was what i remember).
    my problem now is that i just dont know where the error is.
    i know of people, using the same client as i that dont have that issues.
    i already bugged the support forums but as far as i saw they dont realy like arch user, atleast they dont answer to their questions. ;P
    i whant to know if MAYBE someone is here who plays tibia and can tell me that he got the same problems like i do or not.
    or you could give me hints what i could try to solve this problem.
    to write it in one short line:
    the problem is that the process "X" sometimes kicks in, using 100% of the cpu, this happens only while playing "tibia"

    Did you add or change your credit card details when downloading the app ? If so then you've probably received a temporary store holding charge, which should disappear within a few days : holding charges. Or have you made any in-app purchases within the app (what app is it) ? If you log into your account on your computer's iTunes (Store > View My Account), what shows under your purchase history ?

    I've been told to reset my router as a possible solution to not being able to connect to a game app. Why is this when my connection is fine for everything else, including other game apps ?

    From my own experience Routers can be a little 'fussy' from time to time. For example my other half may well be happily surfing the 'net on her iPad but mine won't connect, however after a quick 'reset' of the router - unplug it for about 30seconds, then plug back in - all is happy and working again. So this may be the reason why.

    I'm not sure what your post means. If you are trying to make an in-app purchase in a game then what happens when you try to do it, does the 'buy' button not work, do you get any error messages ... ?

  • Slow performance-CS4, why?

    Hi,
    I have a Q9450 proccessor, Vista 64 bit with 4GB ram. ever since I installed CS4, things are going a bit slow in PPRO, and I don't understand why?
    For example, scrubbing or playback in the timeline have become painfully slow, and sometimes, I see leftovers of the marker, as if I don't have enough memory (it's hard to explain in writing... I hope
    you got it). Overall, all the symptoms shows I don't have enough memory, because of the slow performance, but it doesn't make sense, cause I have 4 GB, and in CS3 it all worked great.
    Any suggetsions?

    I highly recommend switching to Vista 64 if you are a Windows user (Mac guys are OK with 10.5.4 or higher) Vista 64 will allow Production Premium CS4 to run using more than 4GB of Ram (XP/Vista32 Limitation). As with most NLEs, there are several programs running at the same time to give you the NLE experience. CS4 now allows each process to take up to 4Gb of RAM. If you have 16GB of RAM, then 4 processes can take up to 4GB each. This is a HUGE advantage over CS3. What are some examples of processes? DynamicLink, AfterServer, Photoshop Server, Adobe Media Encoder, Titler, Playback, Capture, Importer, and many more. I tell most people to count on buying 8GB minium.
    So maybe I have to add more ram, in order CS4 to run properly...

    There are plenty of methods for putting a resume online, where a potential employer can download it, though admittedly the iPad is less flexible in this regard than a computer.  Nobody ever has claimed otherwise.  However, I get the feeling you're not actually looking for an answer to anything, and you're just posting to complain.  Note that that is a violation of the Apple Support Communities Terms of Use, which you agreed to when signing up for an account here.
    I wish I had gotten a Galaxy Tab.
    Then sell your iPad and go buy one.  You will have no problems whatsoever finding a buyer.

    I want to buy a mac, but!
    My brother and I like to play games like Oblivion, Stalker, Steam-games and other. We're waiting for a new powerful Macs from Apple and here they are!
    Now, the questions:
    - could You tell me about game performance on a new iMac with ATI 2600Pro Video card using or not Boot Camp and WinXP?
    Cuz, if the performance will be slow, then we should to buy a Mac Pro, which is a bit expensive

  • Enhance game performance

    I'm not sure where is the correct place to post this topic. I think I'm in the correct place.
    First, my system specifications:
    - MSI K9N4 SLI
    - MSI R4850 512 (A little oced)
    - AMD Athlon 64 x2 3600+ @2.5 (oced to 4800+)
    - Seagate 160 GB 8 MB cache
    - 2 GB RAM DDR2 667 @511
    - Windows Vista x64 Ultimate
    The "problem" is the following: I'm playing Medal of Honor Airborne and Jericho, both in highest quality. The games performance in general terms is very quickly, the protagonist "walk" normal, no slowdowns, but when the game loaded for the first time I note a frame rate drop that some seconds later disappears and works as should. However when for example, I'm entering in new areas, a new frame per seconds drop is noted again.
    Running FRAPS in MOH Airborne show a average FPS of 25 and I think it's low!
    So, two questions:
    1) This motherboard supports only x8 speed PCIE ports. Is this the reason for the FPS drop? Or this affect only a little?
    2) I'm going to buy more memory, two modules of 1 GB each one. The system will be equiped with 4 GB in total. Maybe the games performance are being affected by the memory because Vista needs to read hard disk paging file?

    What do you mean with sounds problems? The sound works well.
    The PSU is CoolerMaster Real Power Pro 550 Watts.
    I'm using Catalyst 8.7 final version. Unfortunately 8.8 doesn't work in my system even with my old card (x1550). When I load Windows CCC.exe close due to problems. Formating doesn't solve the problem so it's a bug from ATI. Maybe 8.9 will fix the issue as others users are having the same problem as me.
    What can I do to enhance game performance?
    I installed Alone in the Dark and it's playable, but when fire or explosions appear, a frame drop is noted 
    I'm playing this game in high quality too.

    While I am no fan of Best Buy and would not buy a lightbulb from them I doubt you issues have anything to do with your iMac and more to do with your lack of experience and simply getting bad advice. Judging by you post I suspect you have loaded your computer down with a lot of crapware and that  has caused it's problems. For example running antivirus apps on a Mac not only is a waste of time, it's a waste of money, system resources and will eventually create more problems that it solves. Please begin educating yourself on the subject by reading Thomas Reeds articles on the subject, Thomas is a frequent and knowledgeable contributor to these forums.     The good news is here are absolutely no, zero, zippo viruses for OS X. There are other types of malware available (for example trojans) however they differ greatly from viruses in that the use has to download and install them, whereas viruses do not work that way. OS X is not like MS Windows and is extremely secure.
    My suggestion at this point would be to clean your computer of the crapware (including antivirus apps) however before doing so please download and install EtreCheck and post its report. Then we can see how your computer has been configured and begin to give you some advice on the next steps.

  • Core i5 27" game performance

    Hey everyone,
    Has anyone installed Windows Vista or 7 on the new iMac 27" with core i5 processor and played any games?
    I'm thinking about buying this model and although games are not a huge deal for me (wouldn't make or break my buying decision), I would be interested to know how the games perform on such a big screen. Obviously the bigger the screen the more GPU memory you would need. This iMac comes with 512mb GPU, really 1GB would've been nice but you can't have it all
    So if anyone has tried this can you let me know how it performed?

    Well I can tell you, you won't have any problems at all. I have a MacBook Aluminum Unibody, with a 2 GHz processor, and Windows 7, and the games are amazingly fast on it.
    So that iMac will be much much better...
