Bad gtk rendering on KDE [SOLVED]

Hi,
I'm using KDE, and since last month, all my gtk app are very ugly.
For instance, look at mkvmerge :
Menu entries :
Combobox :
Do you have any idea ?
Thanks !

Does someone have an idea ?
In kde settings, I set gtk rendering with my kde theme.
As you can see in the combobox screenshot, I can't see the scroller in the scroll area.
And I have no contour for buttons, tabs, menus, popop menus.
It's very annoying...

  • [SOLVED] No GTK themes on KDE

    Good morning.
I'm having a rather odd problem, one which I have yet to encounter.
I use KDE as a desktop, and when I start a GTK program using KDE tools (such as a launcher, or KDE's run command prompt) the program starts without being themed.
When I start the programs from a terminal, they are themed properly.
Has anyone a clue as to what's wrong with my setup?
    Thank you.

    Oh, sorry.
It was a bad environment variable - gtk-qt-engine generated a file in my ~/.kde/env directory which manipulated an environment variable. Deleting this file solved this issue.

  • Problem with firefox and gtk applications in KDE!

Hi there, i have my arch installed and it's great, i use kdemod that is quite perfect but i have a problem: all the gtk applications like firefox, eclipse, emesene and so on are terrible looking expecially the fonts. Here what I've done:
    1) installed kdemod-gtk-qt-engine and configured to use qt theme and it's better
    2) enabled fonts with antialiasing and hinting
    3) installed fonts for lcd like cairo-lcd
    4) installed microsoft fonts
But stille it's ugly and it's impossible to use the apps, here's a screenshot:
The point is that i can't use konqueror because i need some plugins like googlebrowsersync that doesn't exist for konqueror. And in other distros like n00buntu it works.
    Thanks for your help!

    pelle.k wrote:
I can relate to what borzo is saying, because i have exactly the same problem.
See, i have installed libxft-lcd and enabled antialiasing and sub-pixel hinting in kde font properties. All kde fonts look great. Now, i usually the exactly the same in gnome "Appearance" font settings (when i use gnome).
The thing is when you have KDE installed you can't set antialiasing and sub-pixel hinting for *GTK* apps, even if you can set a theme and font size with gtk-chtheme/.gtkrc
This has nothing to do with how firefox renders fonts, really, but how GTK fonts a drawn in KDE since gnome-settings-manager isn't running, and thus GTK apps get crappy fonts (including firefox html rendering).
So, how can i enable antialiasing and sub-pixel rendering specifically for GTK apps in KDE without running gnome-settings-manager?
I know this is an old thread, but I'm still having exactly the same problem. I've been fiddling with fonts for a whole week now. Fonts in KDE apps look great, but crappy in GTK-apps like Thunderbird and Firefox. Like Pelle asked: how can I set aintialiasing and sub-pixel redndering for GTK apps? When running Gnome the fonts in GTK-apps look so much better. I wanna use my shiny new KDE 4 desktop, though.

  • Slow text rendering in KDE.

    Hi there,
I recently starting getting quite fed up with how I felt that writing stuff in kate (or kile, or kdevelop etc) was very slow and unresponsive. The effect I was getting is that there was a big delay (of up to a second or two sometimes) between hitting the key and the character appearing on the screen. It's especially noticeable if you type a whole bunch of stuff very quickly - wait for the screen to catch up!
I did a few experiments, and managed to rule out any kate plugins etc, though I wasn't experiencing the same thing in konsole / yakuake. Also, I noticed that if I made the kate window smaller, so not so much of the text I was editing was visible, it would speed up. In fact, the size of the lag seems proportional to the amount of text visible and being rendered while typing (even if that text is not being changed).
I fiddled with a few settings and noticed that I could fix the lag (i.e. completely get rid of it) by disabling "sub-pixel rendering" in KDE's font settings (and restarting the relevant program). Incidentally, it's not enough to have the the "sub-pixel rendering" box enabled and select "none" - that still creates the lag.
Therefore, I can work around this for now by unchecking the box, but it got me interested in this. I'm thinking that it's something to do with the way Qt is rendering the fonts, possibly to do with my intel graphics driver, but possibly not.
So this post is twofold really; firstly to let others know of the workaround in case they're also experiencing this, but also to ask around to see if other people are noticing this, with a view to filing a bug / feeding back to developers / deciding that I need newer hardware.
    My specs:
    - KDE from kdemod 4.2.2
    - intel 945GM graphics card onboard
    - xorg intel driver  (currently version 2.3.2, but I've experienced the same with earlier and later versions, up to the current git version)
    - XServer 1.6, though again, I've experienced this with 1.5 too.
    - Using EXA for rendering, though again I've had the same experience with XAA. Haven't tried UXA yet.
    So... anyone any contribution?
    Cheers,
    Pete.

I experience sever slowdown in scrolling in Kate with my Intel 965.  However, I do not experience any problems in other applications (Kontact, Konsole, etc.).  I did not experience the problem (at least noticably) when I was using Xorg 1.4 and XAA.  Hopefully, 4.5.1 resolves this issue for me as well...  It's harder to deal with large code files now.

  • [SOLVED] Bad font rendering after last update (pango issue?)

I am getting very strange font rendering problem. Look at the screen below. It only affects gtk windows (as you can see below HTML text is currently displayed, but url bar and context menu is not). I belive it appeared after upgrading pango package to 1.32, but downgrading it as instructed here (https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=151886), didn't help. Does anybody know what can it be? Any hints where to look for the solution?

  • [SOLVED] Bad font rendering and overlapping since last update

Hi all! Since the last updates I'm getting font rendering problems. I'm seeing something like this in lots of applications:
See the "ce" in Facebook, those letters are kinda overlapped! This happens in Nautilus too, for example in the word "devel". I'm using the Ubuntu patches for font rendering, but actually I have problems even with the stock packages.
I'm on a fresh install right now (I really needed to clean the old one, too much experimenting xD) and I keep having this problem.
    Can anyone help me?
SOLVED I downgraded pango from 1.32.1-1 to 1.30.1-1 and everything went back to normality

  • [SOLVED] Bad GTK Menu Spacing

I'm using openbox and some of my GTK applications have a bad look, like gedit (http://img.susepaste.org/view/raw/43677814), audacious and emacs, for example. Where can I adjust the GTK menu spacing?
Last edited by thiagowfx (2013-11-01 21:35:01)

I'm using gtk-theme-elementary from the AUR (set with lxappearance), so it probably only has a GTK2 theme; not a GTK3 one. At least now I know the issue is the theme, I thought it was a more general one, about GTK itself.
So, I will see the gtk2 versions of these apps, but I don't think this is a *super* good solution. Maybe I should use another theme, which supports both GTK 2 and 3. Thanks, WorMzy!
I will post here later saying if I switched themes or have successfully set the gtk2 versions of these apps.

How can pacman influence the behaviour of gtk2-engines? IIRC, gtk2 has been updated twice since the introduction of pacman 4, so check if the most recent update (2.24.9-2) fixes the issue in the first place.

  • Font rendering in KDE 4

I recently installed Arch (switching from Ubuntu 8.10) and decided to give KDE a try.  So far I'm mostly happy, but the font rendering isn't working so well.  There are two problems: the first is that fonts all look too thin.  The second is that most of them are way too big!  (For some reason they render properly in some places, like some sites online [e.g. Gmail], but they're way off in most applications.)
I've tried the suggestions under "LCD" packages from the Arch fonts wiki, along with this guy's suggestions for setting up fontconfig.  I've also tried (variously) changing my DPI settings for KDM and System Settings -> Appearance -> Fonts (with aliasing anti-aliasing enabled or with system settings, and forcing the DPI to 120 or disabled).
Oh, and I have a 15.4" widescreen 1680x1050 LCD monitor, which I think is (supposed to be) 129 DPI.
What can I do to get fonts to look the way they should?

    hunterthomson wrote:
OK, you problem is not with KDE. This weirded me out when I moved to Archlinux from Ubuntu too. In Archlinux you have to install all the fonts you want to use. The default fonts suck. So, You just need to install better fonts. You want the TrueType Fonts "ttf". You can install them with    pacman
Try this to list all the font packages available.
    sudo pacman -Ss font
These are some ones that are good
    ttf-dejavu
    ttf-freefont
    ttf-liberation
you instal them you just do...
    sudo pacman -S ttf-liberation ttf-freefont ttf-dejavu
Then you will want to open up the Konfiguration thing that you change the KDE configurations settings in and then change the fonts in there.
Thanks for the tip!  I installed those (and a few others), and I definitely like (for instance) FreeSans better than the default Sans that most everything was using.  Most things look better; I think I'm going to have to tweak the hinting a bit still, but this is definitely an improvement.  Many of the things I thought were rendering related were actually just bad fonts, like you said.
There are just a couple of problems remaining that I'm hoping will be just as easy to conquer...  First, some websites are still rendering horribly.  Take a look at this screenshot of this site, followed by this one:
At first I figured it was a problem with Firefox (I know GTK doesn't always play nicely with KDE), but it looks the same in Konqueror.  A quick peek at the HTML for the first seems to say that it's asking for Verdana, Arial, or Helvetica...and I have Verdana and Arial installed.  (The second one calls for a ridiculous font, Palatino Linotype, which I don't have.)  Either way, though, the pages look totally wrong (the font is much too large) compared to any other machine I've seen it on (even my previous Ubuntu setup).   Does anyone know what's going on?
One other example of font size weirdness: the digital clock plasmoid.  Here's what it looks like:
The odd thing is that it looked like this for a while when I first installed Arch and KDE, and then played nicely for a few days...and now it's back to looking ugly.
And finally, here are my font settings in System Settings:
(And yes, I've rebooted since installing the new fonts and changing font settings, just in case.)
    Any more ideas?

  • Document converted with FlashPaper has bad text rendering.

I converted a Korean document to Flash with FlashPaper but its text rendering was bad like the following screenshot.
But it got better when I scrolled a little or zoomed in/out. Like this.
As you see, the text is softer and easier to read.
I don't know how to solve this problem.

Very glad to know I'm not alone, thanks for the reply!  Also, looks like the two of us aren't alone either.  There's another thread over at Bleeping Computer that has the same issue:
    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/566588/did-new-windows-updates-and-now-my-fonts-look-bad/
Microsoft knows about the issue, see "Known issues with this security update" here:

    Update: Resolution
Microsoft has released a fix in
KB3037639.  Interestingly, at the time of posting this, it looks like Microsoft hasn't released the update into the Windows/Microsoft Update stream.  So for now, it looks like a manual download/install is required.

  • No Direct Rendering - Intel 915GM [SOLVED]

When it comes to Xorg stuff, I get lost in a hurry.  I'm trying to squeeze a little more 3d performance out of this laptop, and while I know I won't get far with the integrated Intel graphics, I've read I can do better than I am getting.  Glxgears gets around 650fps.  ioUrbanTerror with very low settings gets 10-18 fps.
I think part of the problem is I can't get direct rendering (and no I'm not using compiz/fusion):
    $ glxinfo | grep direct
    direct rendering: No (LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT set)
Doing export LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=0 doesn't fix this. I'd be very appreciative of any suggestions!

  • Printers not shown in gtk apps under KDE 4.7

Sorry if asked before, I searched a lot and tried many things but couldn't find a fix.
No gtk based app are showing my configured printers. This includes LibreOffice, GIMP and Chromium. The printers are, however, shown properly in every kde app and in Opera. http://localhost:631/printers/ also shows "No printers."
    I'm running KDE 4.7.2.
    Things I already tried:
    - cp /etc/cups/cupsd.conf.default /etc/cups/cupsd.conf
    - I already have installed libgnomeprint
    - HostNameLookups Double in /etc/cups/cupsd.conf
    - I'm already in lpadmin group, which I also added to /etc/cups/cupsd.conf
I don't really know when this problem started, probably a few weeks ago.
    Thanks in advance.

Same issue here. Problem only occurs if you are using a custom shortcut (not one of the shortcuts mentioned in Main Shortcut.
I did a quick search and this is the only related post I have found on the topic so it seems like an Arch only problem. If it is a KDE problem, this http://www.commit-digest.org/issues/201 … 79ffe2ed8/ bug-fix could be the reason.

  • Appropriate theme for GTK applications inside KDE

    Hello.
I'd want you to tell me some "appropriate" GTK themes to be used with KDE. To be more precise, I want to know if there are some GTK themes that match with KDE themes (e.g. Bespin).
    Are there any of these?
    Thanks is advance.

Ok, I found a good theme and imported it. Thanks ! Now it's time for the window decoration!

  • Problem starting OpenOffice with KDE [Solved]

I just did a clean Arch install witk KDE desktop. After I installed OpenOffice with
    pacman -Sy openoffice-base
when I try to start openoffice I get the following error message
"The application cannot be started. An internal error occurred."
I tried to reinstall OpenOffice but that didn't help.
Any ideas whats going wrong? OpenOffice worked fine with Gnome before I did a clean install.
    -A-

this problem is caused as some files on the install or somewhere else got assigned root permissions so that is the problem. i deleted the folder and everything recreated ok.
I have the same problem, but deleting ~/.openoffice.org2 haven't solved the problem, so I looked up this forum for other solutions and nothing helped.
From other topic: That's not a java problem, I think.
    Any ideas?

  • Adobe Acrobat DC - Bad at rendering scanned/OCR'd documents

Today I opened a scanned and OCR'd document (~200 pages) and because of the recent update, this opened in Acrobat DC (2015.007.20033). While using the Find function to go through the document, many pages had large white blocks instead of the content:
I've obfuscated the part that was rendered for privacy purposes, but even through that obfuscation,  please note that the table underneath is meant to be displayed as black, not light grey. In addition (and more importantly), more than half the page is not rendered at all. It is as if Acrobat DC just stopped rendering the page.
Finally, I resorted to opening it up in Adobe Reader XI (11.0.10), and then I was able to find/navigate without problems.
Some notes that may be applicable when trying to reproduce:
My document has a fair amount of annotations throughout, though none on this page.
I was viewing in "Fit one full page to window" zoom mode.
I was using the Find tool to search the OCR'd text for keywords (not browsing page by page).
    I'm on Win 7 Enterprise 64-bit
I'm not certain that any or all of those things played a part, but opening the same document in Acrobat with the same zoom setting, and navigating via the Find tool produced no problems.

    Hello im an Sven,
please carefully read my error message. It is not about the appearance of
the image, which is much smaller in the DC as in the XI or Pro 9.
The problem persists. After the scanning process (attached image), the
scanpicuture remains longer than 3 minutes and will not disappear. There is
no transition to the finished PDF. Only on the button cancel, I come to the
finished PDF. And that is a software error on DC.
    I hope you understand.
The problem on Version Acrobat XI Pro newest update is not only von DC.
Thank you for your quick problem solving!
    With best regards from
    Sven Kiss-Lehrmann
