Bad iPod

My friend purchased an iPod in June of 2005 and its has had many problems since that time. The latest problem is that it will not charge or at least not display the charging picture. she called tech support once and the next time was told that it would cost her $45 dollars to place that call. The other problems she has had is an unresponsive buttn and a few other problems once she had to send it in and got it back "fixed" but it broke again soon after. I was wondering if ther is a way to get a refund or rather a new iPod I am a loyal apple user and i know that there are sometimes faulty machines so do not blame apple however it would be nice if she could get a replacement please let me know what she can do if anything. Thanks
Austin

I must say, that even though I am very happy with the fact that I own an Ipod, I must confess that my enthusiasm has cooled down a bit.
In August I bought my I-pod, and 3 hours into charging it broke down. I went to the shop, and they immediately gave me a new one. Happy again....
Since then I experienced minor problems with the buttons, and finally the menu button would not respond at the end of september. I took it to the store, and they sent it away to be repaired. Today - 3 weeks later - I went to the store, and tadaaah!! they gave me a new one - again! I am not impressed, and if this one breaks down I will get really mad. But at least they have given me new ones without any hazzle.

  • Do I have a bad Ipod?

Ok, I bought a refurbished 160GB Ipod from a reputable vendor on ebay, but before I go ballistic and start complaining that they sent me a bad ipod I want to make sure.
First thing I want to make clear is that I still own a 60GB Gen5 and NEVER experienced ANY of the issues Im about to mention.
WHen I first hooked up the ipod it wouldnt restore. I just got an error that said the ipod was corrupt. Itunes was also going VERY slow and I have a very fast computer. eventually I was able to get windows to reformat the hard drive. iTunes then allowed me to supposedly copy all my songs. Once I unhooked it, I saw that NO songs had been copied, so I rehook the ipod and then itunes allows me to restore the ipod, which lead me to believe that everything was cool.
So I proceed to copy my entire 85GB library over to the Ipod. Itunes unfortunately did not make the process easy, because it was extremely difficult to get itunes to start copying all the music.
So once it starts copying i figure i will just wait it out. While all the copying is going on, itunes is going pitifully slow. every click was met with a long delay.
A while later I come to discover that not all of my music had copied only about 3/4. Then this is where it all went way downhill, because itunes seems to lock up every time I try to copy anything over. I also get error messages and everytime I rehook the ipod windows asks to scan the drive and finds errors.
Itunes just doesnt work well at all and IM getting EXTREMELY frustrated.
    Any ideas?

First do a through check of the iPod's hard drive checking for unreliable sectors as well as the logical errors that often result from a crashed sync.
    *Checking hard-drive for errors*
Hold Menu+Select for about 6 seconds until it resets, then hold Menu+Play as soon as the Apple logo appears, again for about 6 seconds to put the machine in disk mode. Connect to your computer, closing iTunes if it opens. Browse *My Computer* and right-click on the drive for the iPod, click Properties, then click Tools. Under Error-checking, click *Check Now*. Under Check disk options, select *Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors*. Click Start. Mac users should run *Disk Utility / Repair Disk* for the equivalent process. This should find and correct any errors in the logical & physical structures of your iPod's hard drive. Once these have been fixed you can reset the iPod (hold Menu+Select ) and should stand a better chance of a successful restore.
My experience suggests that trying to sync too manay songs in one go can crash the process, leaving errors on the iPod's hard drive. How many can reliably sync in a single session is probably a function of memory & processor speed, but this method should help you break up the process so that you can get all your media onto the iPod
    *Break up large transfers*
In iTunes select the menu item *File... New Smart Playlist*. Change the first drop-down box to Playlist, the next to is and the next to Music. Tick against *Limit to*, type in say 20, then change the drop-down to GB, and set the last drop-down to artist. When you click OK you can enter a name for the playlist, e.g. Transfer. Now sync this playlist to your iPod rather than your entire library. When the sync is complete modify the rule ( *File... Edit playlist* ) to increase the size by your chosen amount, then sync and repeat. You can experiment with different size increments, if it doesn't work just choose something a bit smaller until it works each time. Before long you should have all your music on your iPod. Once that's done you can move on to other media such as podcasts, videos, photos etc.

  • Bad ipod need help badly!!!

So my 20gb photo was working fine then all of a sudden it gave me thesad ipod. Then i tried everything possible to fix it and it didnt work. Then all of a sudden it kept asking for it to be plugged into a wall charger. So i plugged it in to one and it would then go the chargeing bar and freeze. is there ne way to fix this without having to basically buy a new ipod. PLZ HELP!!!.
Dell   Windows Vista   20 gb ipod photo

    You can't.. it is terrible..
the only app that really uses it is mirror
Open this link on your phone to install mirror
    http://maemo.org/downloads/product/raw/Maemo5/mirror?get_installfile
the camera firmware is bad, so the image quality is truely terrible.. play with mirror to see.. it may be fixed in a future firmware release (it *IS* better than it was.. the firmware last year had a line through the picture!)

  • Bad iPod Video..

Well first sorry for my english but I'm from Mexico.
OK I used to own a 30GB iPod Photo.. It was almost perfect except for the non video support. Ok so I decided to buy a 60Gb black iPod with Video. First of all it has a lot of very very small dead pixels on screen... I own a griffin earthumps that sound grate with iPod photo but for my surprise the iPod with Video sound incredibly bad vs the iPod Photo.. I think that the last firmware fix this or maybe I'm just crazy...
Ok so tell me where the **** I can see my videos that I had under TV Programs on iTunes on the iPod... In the Videos Menu on the iPod I see only Videoclips, and Movies... Nothing about TV.. The only I can do to see them is to open the Recently Added playlist or check them as Movies under iTunes...
And what about that nice bar with movement like the iPod Photo or Nano.. Like in Mac OSX.. The iPod with Video just shows a blue static bar.. No backgraund color in movement like other iPods...
And finally why the **** when I turn off the iPod if I touch the click wheel it sound like the iPod is still on..
Oh and I forgot why do Apple didn't put an option like the other iPods to enable or disable that click noise from earphones.. I like that the iPod sound with the clicks but not on the earphones!!!
And well I think now really finally.. The crashes... My iPod Photo never crashed... New one sometimes only freeze.. others crashed... I think that with the newest firmwares it crashes less but freezes and lags as always...
I'm too disappointed with my ultimate generation iPod...
It's just mine or all other iPod with Video suffer the same???
If not, can I send it to Apple to get a fixed one???
The problem is that I buyed the iPod on USA in Miami, but now I'm on Mexico..
    Pleaseee answer me someone!!!

Wow, it really sounds like you need to send it back to Apple for a replacement! I don't experience ANY of the problems you have!
If it's still under warranty, I would definately get it replaced, just for the dead pixels (and if Apple won't ship to mexico, buddy up with a friend in the US. Have apple ship it to them, and have that person ship it to you - A trick I learned because many companies don't like to ship to Alaska).
As to not seeing your TV programs, make sure your settings are right in iTunes - Videos has its own tab in preferences.
I'm not sure what's up with the pod acting like it's still on when it's off.... again, I'd get it replaced.
My bar movement is just the same on my video as on my nano and my photo.
I DO have the option to change the click sound, again, just like on my Nano and my Photo.... in the settings.
I've NEVER had my Video freeze up on me (knock on wood), and I HAVE had my Nano freeze up on me...
Don't lose faith - get it replaced.

  • Bad iPod update software?

Last week I was prompted to install the latest ipod and itunes software released 1/10/06.
However, upon installing the software, my ipod no longer updates - anything.
I've done the 5-R's, I've reinstalled everything from scratch, and it still won't update:
These five steps (known as the five Rs) will conquer most iPod issues.
    1. Reset your iPod.
    2. Retry with a different USB port.
    3. Restart your computer.
    4. Reinstall iPod and iTunes software.
    5. Restore your iPod.
I suspect there is something very wrong with the latest 1.11 ipod update.
    Symptoms:
    1) PC & iTunes see ipod fine
    2) itunes shows songs/podcasts on the ipod
    3) ipod is blank - no podcast menu, no playlists are updated, it's blank.
Anyone know if Apple has responded to this issue? or has a fix in the works? Or if there is some way to roll-back to the older version? or what I can do?

    Hi Posty,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
I don't know if this will help but won't the old software (version 1.0) be on the install CD that came with the nano?
    Regards,
    Colin R.

  • Is there any way to recover data from bad ipod hard drive?

My 60GB iPod photo shows a sad iPod icon, will not connect to iTunes and will not charge. I have recently replaced the battery and it was working for a day, but now I keep getting the sad iPod icon. If I take the hard drive out and connect it with a USB2.0 mini enclosure to my computer, can I recover the data on it?

    Depends... See Corrupt iPod classic.

  • A Paticularly Bad iPod Connection Problem

My ipod will not connect to my PC it shows up in windows explorer but when you click on it or rightclick it freezes the "explorer.exe" and i have to end its task..the ipod updater is the same way it freezes as soon as i plug in my ipod..or open it with the ipod connected.
Once I plug in my Ipod there is no way short of restarting it while its plugged in i can do to get it free'd up I've been having alot of problems with this lately normally I would be able to restore it and start fresh but nothing I do seems to have any effect this time,
its been on a declining slope since it broke originally see this thread for my previous question:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=535772&tstart=0
I'm guessing a major harddrive failure...wouldn't that just be the way of it now that i'm off Warrentee...

I posted this in another topic, but I had the same problem that you have...this is how I resolved it:
Success!!!! Here's how I did it:
    1) Re-named iTunes music folders in my My Music documents, just to avoid any mishaps during the uninstall process. I just called them "Backup" and "Backup2"
    2) if you have the ORIGNAL iPod updater installed on your computer, restore iPod using this updater. If not skip this.
    3) Uninstall iTunes, and any iPod updaters that you have, including the original. Delete any leftover files & folders from the C: drive.
    4) If your iPod is in disk mode, and is available in Windows Explorer, find it and right-click, and select format. Make sure to have the volume type set as FAT32, and do not use quick format. This is really just an extra step, just to be sure that your iPod is clean of any newer software.
    5) Re-boot, and re-install your ORIGINAL software.
I have a 3G 15GB iPod, and do not listen to podcasts. So not having that capability in iTunes is no loss to me. If you have more music in iTunes than will fit on your iPod, you can either manually update iPod, or create a playlist, and set iTunes to only update that playlist (or any others you create later). If you listen to podcasts, and need that functionality in iTunes, you may be out of luck, as oldversion.com does not currently have older versions of iTunes available. If you stil have a setup program for iTunes 5, you may want to back that up as well and re-install that after your original install is complete.
I have re-charged my iPod, and listened to it for a bit, with no song skipping, and all songs I have asked for on it. I'll keep an eye on it over the next couple of days, but it seems like I have cured my sick iPod.

  • Too bad ipods can't be checked before leaving the store

I had made a suggestion that folks check their ipods before leaving the store with them, but Prof said that's not possible. they must be synced first. bummer.
    Message was edited by: David.

I havent got my touch yet. I have been reading up on these forums and it looks like Apple Store is the last place to buy it.
Anyway, you said that when u turn it on without syncing, it has a BLACK screen saying whatever. Isnt that big Black screen enough to notice if it is negative or not?
And for those who have a screen with negative blacks, will you take it back and complain or will you keep it as if thats the way it was made and meant to be???

  • Bad iPod Problem!

About a week ago, my iPod froze on me. I tried resetting it and all my friends tried and no one could figure it out. It gave me the unhappy icon that tells you to go to www.apple.com/support/ipod so I went there and tried everything possible and still no success. The next day, I plugged it in my computer and my computer wont even read my iPod anymore. I tried using every USB and still didn't get it to work. Now every time i plug it in the computer or my charger, the apple icon shows up, then the unhappy icon, then it looks like its charging with the BIG battery in the center of the screen, but it just freezing again.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Nick

We have to understand the reason behind the problem, I could be wrong but I tend to agree with the following statement
"I guess those little Toshiba 1.8in drives sometimes get stuck and a sharp tap is need to free it up."
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=1674593#1674593.
You must get your iPod to be recognized by at least a computer (which does not matter is PC or Mac) in order for you to do a Restore again (which equal a formatting and installtion of software back with your iPod). So please find another PC or Mac nearby(which I much prefer with a Mac as it is better chance to get mounted with it) and connect your iPod with a computer.
If your iPod is covered by the warranty, send it for repairing or go to an apple shop and ask for a favour.
Please read the following interesting article, I do not ask you to believe it, and it is your choice to believe it or not, which did help me to solve couples iPods already

  • Bad iPod Touch

I have an iPod Touch 64GB that is a few years old that is acting up.  First I was losing my songs, and now the thing is totally unreliable.
I have looked over the Apple Repair Service options and I am wondering if it is worth it, or should I just scap it and buy a new one?
I think that this one has been baked because I leave it in my car all the time and in the summer it gets pretty hot.
    Opinions please?

A replacement would be $199, whereas a new one (assuming you still want 64GB) would be $399. I would recommend selling your current one and just going for a new one. $199 would get you the same, older generation iPod as you have now, and it will probably be refurbished. There have been quite a few improvements since then, so I would say it is worth it.

Thanks for the suggestion, but it still didn't work. Still froze the computer when I plugged it in. I plugged the ipod into a friend's mac and was able to restore the settings on it, and now it seems to be working on mine as long as I drag the songs into it and don't try to sync it or manage the music through the tabs at the top. I have had nothing but problems with Itunes since I got this macbook about a month ago, in terms of not recognizing songs or freezing up....

  • Help - My 5th Generation Ipod not recognised by ITunes but 1st Gen Ipod is!

Can anyone help? This is driving me mad!
I recently purchased a 5th Generation 80gb Ipod. Before installing to my PC I downloaded the latest 7.2 version of ITunes together with quicktime. However whenever I plug my new Ipod in, nothing happens other than the 'Found New Hardware Wizard' appearing in XP asking for the driver to be installed and the Ipod Charging/displaying that it is fully charged.
I have spent hours going through the apple site and following their suggestions on this and have done the following:
    Re-started the iPod service
Uninstalled and re-installed ITunes 7.2 (at least 5 times now!)
Deleted all my temporary folders and temp internet folders and cleared cookies, files, etc
Ran Windows Install Cleanup Utility to clean up any leftover installer files
Tried the Ipod in all of my USB 1 & 2 ports (My MESH PC is less than a year old)
I then contacted Apple Support who suggested I try my Ipod on another computer and if it didn't work to return it to them. So I duly installed iTunes (7.2) on my laptop at work and hey presto my Ipod was recognised and I was able to download a few tunes.
I glean from this that there can't be a fault with the Ipod itself??
Back at home I re- tried all of the things above and then after still no joy I connected my old 1st generation ipod to my pc and after some time ( at least 5 minutes) iTunes recognised the old ipod and syncronised. Using the same USB Port and the same cable I plugged in the new Ipod but still nothing happened other than being asked to install the driver once again!
Now all would be fine if I kept my music collection on my work laptop but unfortunately this is not possible and I could even get into serious trouble for having iTunes on there.
If anyone has any suggestions I would be really grateful as £200+ is a lot of money to pay for something that does not work!

The "driver" never was available from Apple. The driver files that Windows uses to communicate with an iPod are standard Windows OS drivers for a USB Mass Storage Device. If Windows cannot/does not recognize your iPod at all, not even at the driver level, it's likely an OS issue, unless the iPod fails to work on another computer as well. At that point you'd been dealing with a bad cable or bad iPod. Since another iPod works with the same cable, then it should be fine.

  • 2nd iPod in a row saying "Disk cannot be read from or written to." Help!

    My setup is as following:
MacBook Pro 2.16 Ghz Intel Core Duo
    Mac OS X 10.5.2
Lacie 250GB External Hard Drive attached via Firewire
    iPod Classic 160GB Black
iTunes 7.6.2 - Library has about 16,000 songs
Using the above setup, my 5th Generation iPod, my iPhone, and my iPod Nano all work just fine. My newly purchased iPod Classic however, refuses to work. Here is the story so far...
I have all of my music on my external hard drive. On the external, there is a folder entitled "iTunes." Inside of that, there are 2 folders. One entitled "Album Artwork" and on entitled "iTunes Music." The music folder contains all of the actual AAC and Mp3 files that makeup my iTunes Library. The actual library data itself, the files entitled "iTunes Library" and "iTunes Library.xml" are on my computer HD, in User>Music>iTunes. Now, I dont know why the library file is on the computer when all the music is on the external, but maybe thats just the way that works.
Anyway, I plugged in the new iPod Classic, it started to sync, and about 15 minutes in, I got a pop up box that said "iPod Sync failed. Disk cannot be read from or written to." So I did a few things to try to make it work. I reinstalled iTunes, I restored the iPod a few times. I set it to only sync music and not TV shows or Movies or Podcasts or Photos. I tried to sync it again. Nothing worked. So, thinking I had a bad iPod, I brought it to the store and swapped it out for a new one. Not a "new" one, but one from the back, so it was refurbished. I tried that. It still didn't work. So I called Apple tech support.
Tech support had me set my iPod for Manual use, and then alphabetically import songs by artists. In other words, bring over all the "A" artists, followed by the "B" artists and so on...So I did that, I got to importing a few songs by Cyndi Lauper, and it got to one song, called "Shine" and the error message came up. So I figured, there it was, the corrupted file. So I deleted it from my computer, and proceeded to go on importing manually, just in case. Well I continued for a while, and at the end of the day, there were about 100 songs that would not copy over. These were songs that worked just fine when you played them through iTunes, and worked just fine on all my other iPods.
So I manually transferred over all the songs that worked, which was about a 100 less than my full library. Along the way, instead of deleting the corrupted songs, I unchecked them. After I did the full manual transfer, I set up the iPod to an automatic sync, only syncing over songs that are checked, thinking the unchecked ones, the corrupted ones, would not even try to be transferred over and it work fine.
I was wrong. With the sync, this time it stopped on a song that was not corrupted the first time around. Not knowing what to do, I ejected my iPod, and it wouldn't eject. It said "iPod appears to be corrupt, please click restore." So I did that, thinking this would finally fix it, since the computer realized the iPod was messed up. I was wrong again. It didn't do anything, it just made it so I could eject my iPod.
So I'm now on my 2nd iPod classic. I've done what Tech Support has told me to do. Now I need help. Badly.

I had similar problems, it was a nightmare and on a 3 month ipod too!. I use a Powerbook G4 at home and a G5 at work - both were returning the same problems. so I sent it off to apple, they quickly sent it back saying there was nothing wrong with and it didn't need to be repaired. I tried it again and the same problems occurred "disc cannot be written to or read from." I could copy 20 songs onto it at the very most. A couple of guys at my work suggested updating it on a PC, then adding tunes via my mac as normal - guess what!? it works a treat!?. How ridiculous is that!? an Apple product works best on a PC. these generations of ipods are obviously designed to work best on Intel based Macs. What is wrong Apple? are you abandoning the G-generation!? still, atleast my ipod works for now - it will prove a problem when I have to update the iPod's software since I don't own a PC or an intel-based Mac.
