Bad Jagged lines in CS5.5 after reformat

Hello & thanks for looking,
I reformatted my computer last week due to a bad virus,
and everything seemed to be running perfect and clean
until i  reinstalled Flash CS5.5 to see that all my art is jagged and
horrible looking. Before the reformat all the lines were smooth as
can be, and now it's only slightly smooth when i zoom in very
close. The further i zoom, the clearer it seems to become
for some of the lines.
I've tried some basic fixes i found on google without any effect (Change  view-Full, let application choose in graphic settings ).
For some reason i do not have a Anti-Alias option in my flash preferences,
so i was not able to change it.
I've installed most the drivers from HP and updated the graphic card,
here's system specs in case it helps.
Windows Vista 'Home Premium
Service Pack1
Pavilion e9180f Elite
Intel(R) core(TM) i7 CPU 920@ 2.67GHz
9.00GB
64-bit Operating System
Nvidia Geforce GTS 250
Resolution
1920 by 1080 (60Hertz)
in the example picture you can see how
some lines are less jagged, when others
are a mess. There's no difference in quality between
regular paintshop and Flash cs5.5 for me, if anyone
could share some solutions i'd be very grateful.
Let me know if anymore information is needed, Thanks!

As John mentioned.. this is as of today still a forum of users helping users.. it is NOT an official Adobe FIX PROGRAM SITE .  It's just users who use adobe products helping others who use adobe product.  I feel your pain... that things are not working as you would wish...but you have so many issues it is hard to know where to begin addressing them as a fellow user of product.
I just bought a nikon d800 and it records on SD cards ( and CF ) as mov h264. Canon is the same ( 7d, 5d ). Those mov files with h264 are HUGELY COMPRESSED...and are a " viewing only " type of product.  It is not  MEANT to be a format file you put into an editing program to edit a movie.  I don't know what your cameras can do but mine can only do mov h264 on the cards.
once you get that figured out... understood....then what you are dealing with is a whole NEW set of issues... as a person who wants to edit that material and make a product from THAT.
It isn't a 'workaround' so much as it is really a WORKFLOW.. that gives you what you need to make your product AFTER ingesting, editing, etc.... those are the other issues.
I sure hope you get what you need and like the end result... but I personally have no clue why you would be mad at things that have nothing to do with your problem...namely blaming adobe for your workflow problems... ????
This forum probably isn't the best place to answer your questions and fix your problems. A film school might help , or some night courses on how to shoot movies ??

  • Slideshow exported to pdf: jagged lines

Although this issue has been brought up before in this forum, it has never been properly answered or resolved. Therefore, I will be pretty precise about the procedure in the hope that knowledgeable people will take a closer look at the issue.
For test purposes on this forum, I make a "slideshow" in LR 2.1 MacBook Pro using one single 10Mpx RAW image that has been pre-rendered 1:1 in Library. For this demonstration, the slideshow has no borders, no text, and 0 pixel margins in layout.
First, I play the slideshow i LR 2.1 so it shows full screen on my 1920x1200 SpectraView monitor, then, to make you see the result, I do a screen shot and then crop the relevant detail from the image, then 'Save for web' jpg to make it web friendly so you can easily see it.
The following image is the relevant detail of the full-screen LR image, namely a car (a very nice beautiful good-looking car, since it happens to be MY car:-)
Then, in LR 2.1, I export to pdf, choosing Screen as resolution, which in my case is 1920x1200, at 100% quality, 'automatically show full screen'. Then I open the pdf in Acrobat 8.1.2, which shows it in full screen on my 1920x1200 monitor. Since the monitor matches the chosen resolution, the result SHOULD be at least as good as the way LR "plays" the slideshow, but preferably with some suitable amount of output sharpening.
However, the car in the image now has very ugly jagged lines. To make you see the result, I do again a screen shot and then crop the relevant detail from the image, then 'Save for web' jpg to make it web friendly so you can easily see it. (This jpg sRGB procedure has not affected the visual result of the artifacts in any relevant way.)
The following image is the relevant detail of the pdf-exported full-screen image, namely the car:
It should be pretty obvious that the result is unacceptable. It is not primarily sharpening that causes the jagged behavior, it looks more like a very bad resampling. Many people seem to have reported the same thing, so I wonder how come this hasn't been addressed at all in the last few versions of LR? Or do you really have a workaround?
PS: increasing resolution further (to for instance 3000x2000 pixels) on export does NOT solve the problem; it only makes the artifact somewhat smaller.

As to why I export pdf slideshows: there are three reasons and usages for this:
    1. Making relatively small (eg. 900x1440) slideshows to be sent over email to people. For about a year I have noticed the quality is lousy, but I first thought it was because LR did a much too strong sharpening on export, but much later I came to realize that the problem has a much more severe origin. I took for granted that Adobe was trying to do something about it, but obviously not.
    2. I can merge several pdf slideshows into one slideshow, so that I can have an Intro Screen at the start of each new "event", where each "event" may be only a few slides.
    3. The native quality of slideshows as shown by LightRoom is lousy in deep shadows, just as bad as in the Library module, despite it has been rendered 1:1. It is ONLY in the Develop module that shadows are rendered decently, or on export to jpg, or export to a pdf slideshow (but the latter has other problems as I have shown above). So, to make the shadows better, and to avoid various problems with the Slideshow module (such as starting or stopping on the wrong image), I often export to pdf. In addition, color management can behave differently when displaying the show on a separate monitor or projector, where LR and Acrobat sometimes differ, especially on Plasma screens.
I have discussed the issue of bad shadow rendering before in this forum (long ago), and Jao thought it was due to a corrupt monitor profile, or at least an improper rendering intent, but I don't think so, and I showed screen shots so that everyone could see the effect. Some people only saw an almost black image, but that is because their monitor is bad. I have a very good monitor (SpectraView) that shows almost the entire Adobe RGB, and the profiling makes me able to see colors all the way down into the deepest shadows. Whenever color management is not working as it should, I see that immediately. It is in those shadows that the Library and Slideshow modules do a very bad job. Maybe the reason is that the previews are based on jpg, and jpg itself is extremely bad in shadows, usually causing severe posterizations.

  • Interlaced? (jagged lines) issue when burning a disc

I uploaded some standard definition DVD-R footage into my 2011 iMac (550gb). To get the DVD-R's vob footage into FCPX for editing, I first transferred the vob's to QT MOV's via MPEG Streamclip. I then imported it into FCPX as is (SD 640x480), then edited and completed my project without any issues or problems in FCPX.
My plan was to burn the finished project back to an standard definition DVD-R. I wanted to try it via four ways. 1) Burn the disc straight from FCPX. 2) Burn the project as an IMG to my hard drive and make the disc later. 3) Export the finished project as an H.264 QT MOV (at 640x480) and then burn the disc via Compressor. 4) Burn the H.264 MOV via Toast.
Here's the big problem: When it was time to either burn the project straight from FCPX to a DVD-R, or take my QT MOV of the same project and burn a disc via Compressor or Toast, the finished DVD-R, when played on a DVD player or in my Mac showed MAJOR interlacing issues (those jagged wiggly lines on people's bodies, especially during camera movement).
So what's strange is, the QT MOV files and the VOB files that I exported to my hard drive from FCPX (before actually making the disc) look and sound perfect. But when I try to burn the actual disc via FCPX, or Compressor, or Toast, the interlacing issues (jagged lines) appear every time. So it's obvious to me that there's something that the disc burning process, itself, doesn't like, or is having issues with. (I tried changing it Progressive and nothing gets rid of those jagged lines.
Any advice or help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.
    J.

    Then it's probably not interlacing.
Post a screen shot of a frame before you imported into FCP and another sceen shot shot after exporting.
(Or is you'd prefer, upload a short section to Dropbox so we can see it and test it first hand.)
I used h.264 because there was no alternative.
I don't understand that; if you export as a master file, you should have a whole bunch of codec options.

it's hard to notice them, but they're very disturbing.

  • Jagged Lines in Slideshows

I'm having some problems with jagged lines showing up in my slideshows after exporting. I'm sure it happens as a result of the ken burns effect. But is there anyway to avoid this? I need to export to mp4 using the h.264 codec. I made sure to choose all very high settings with no success.

Just a quick edit. Is Fotomagico a little better at exporting slideshows without any jagged lines? I noticed when I exported the same slideshow that the jagged lines were gone!

  • Vector and PNG jagged lines

    Hi!
I've created a vectorized logo using CorelDraw X7. As my workflow consists of Adobe products, as Lightroom, Photoshop and InDesign, I though it would be convenient to integrate Illustrator in my workflow for better file handling. Then I've faced my first problem: export from Corel to Illustrator. As Corel allowed me to export in .AI file format, that was the best quick solution. But when I opened the file inside Illustrator, it wasn't good looking, and I realized it needed some adjustments. To be honest, the issue was specifically with a line stroke within my logo, noticeably jagged. I've already checked if I was in Pixel Preview Mode, as well as the anti-aliasing options, pixel grid alignment and the document resolution [I've done a extensive search about the issue before posting here, but haven't find anything really helpful]. I tried to redesign the logo using Illustrator, but the ******* line keeps frustrating me.
I know that I'm working with vectors and that shouldn't be happening, even taking into consideration that the monitor inevitably shows images in pixels. That said, if I zoom in a lot, I can see perfect lines, but zoomed at 100 or 200%, the jagged lines are there. I though that it was just a preview issue from Illustrator that wouldn't affect the output file, so I exported it in PNG, which is the output file I mostly use in those cases, but the issue remained. The line stroke I'm talking about is a fine line with variable width at both tips [wider in the middle and tapering at the ends]. This tapering is what causes the problem, creating a jagged effect from the middle section through the ends. What's curious about it is that the same line, when the original file is opened in Corel, is showed smooth and perfect, in vector lines or after PNG export.
As it wasn't enough, ironically, if I create the same line in Photoshop and paste it into Illustrator [which recognizes it as a raster image], the output is exactly what I expected when exported to PNG [from Illustrator] and with a far better preview inside Illustrator, though still a bit jagged with 100% zoom. But as I plan to work with vector lines up to the moment of exporting files, a rasterized object wasn't part of my plans...
I'll be very glad if someone is able to help me. I'm working on CC 2014.
Follows a link to the open files from Corel and Illustrator. For comparison purposes, inside Illustrator file there are 3 versions of the line, being the first the original Corel vector, the middle one is the Photoshop raster, and the third is the one created inside Illustrator using elipse tool.
    Dropbox - Logo.rar
PS.: English isn't my native language, so my apologies for some mistakes I may have commited

Even when I create the same line using Illustrator tools? I though I'd have no problem creating a fine line with variable width.
Here goes the print screens of what you asked me. The first one is the info of the line created on Corel; the other is the one created on Illustrator:

Please describe the problem in as much relevant detail as possible. The "etrecheck" fad hasn't made that step any less necessary. The better your description, the better the chance of a solution.
For example, if the computer is slow, which specific actions are slow? Is it slow all the time, or only sometimes? What changes did you make, if any, just before it became slow? Have you seen any alerts or error messages? Have you done anything to try to fix it? Most importantly, do you have a current backup of all data? If the answer to the last question is "no," back up now. Ask if you need guidance. Do nothing else until you have a backup.

  • After reformatting hard drive, iPod syncs very slowly with iTunes

A couple of months ago I had to reformat my computer's hard drive. I keep all my music files on an external hard drive. After reformatting, the man who did this for me reloaded iTunes for me and imported all my music back into my iTunes library.
It seems that since that time, when I sync my iPod to the iTunes library, it takes many times longer than it used to. Maybe something else happened to my iPod or iTunes and the reformat is just a conincidence, but it really does seem to take three or four times longer to sync.
I have iTunes 7.4.1.2 and my iPod is an older one, a 40G with dock connector
Also, I recently bought some audiobooks to put on my iPod. I only had about 600megs available so the iPod would not sync. I then removed several Gigs from my iTunes library. When I click on the "music" icon under "library" it shows that I have only a little over 29G used which should leave well over 5 plus Gigs available for the new music. But when I try to sync the iPod, it gives me the message that I have only approx. 600 megs available. What's up. I never have had this problem before and I have had the iPod for several years.
    Any ideas or suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Dennis

I actually learned yesterday that Apple didn't put USB 2.0 in their Macs until G5... something I was VERY irritated to find out. Turns out they were betting that Fire Wire would take off instead of USB 2.0, so they only equipped their machines with USB 1.1. So as a result, my iPod is unacceptably slow. Other nagging problems like this are convincing me that I'll have to get a new Mac Pro in the coming year, but for the meantime I think I'll be buying a USB 2.0 PCI card.
    Thanks for your response.

After reformatting my 1 Tb WD ext drive and tinkering with the "exclude these items" list, I now get the following error message from Time Machine: "Are you sure you want to back up to the same device your original data is on?"  I've reformatted in Disk Utilities...not sure what I did wrong.  Any help would be appreciated.

Not sure what you mean by "booted" from it.
If the Mac OS is installed on the external drive, then it's possible to start up from it, just as you do from your internal drive. Please open the Startup Disk preference pane in System Preferences, and verify that your internal drive is selected as the startup disk.
Assuming that's the case, then it may be that your TM settings have been corrupted. Turn off TM, then move or delete the file /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist. Turn TM back on, recreate your settings, and try again.

I just a purchased a Panasonic BTLH1700 to use as a braodcast monitor with Final Cut Pro 6 and even though the monitor and my FCP project are 720p mode, I'm still seeing jagged lines. I thought that was usually a 480i issue.
When you're working in a 720p project, should you be seeing jagged lines as in interlacing on the Panasonic LH1700???
Please help. Thanks very much in advance,

PS: The monitor is connected to my computer via component cables and a BlackMagic HD Pro card. Should I be looking instead at Matrox MXO??? I also used the SDI port and still have jagged lines on the external monitor.

    Hi Shane,
Thanks very much for your help. As far as I know, no, there is no downconversion occurring. I went into the Blackmagic settings in general systems preferences, and there is no downconversion selected.
So I don't know what's causing this. But would I be better off if I sold my BlackMagic HD Pro card and instead purchased a Matrox MXO? I've heard a lot of good things about it.

  • Horizontal jagged lines in ProRes conversion from MPEG-2

I converted an MPEG-2 from a DVD into a ProRes 422 Quick time through MPEG Streamclip in order to edit excerpts in FCP 7.  When imported in FCP it shows horizontal broken layers when I stop playing it, and full image when it runs.  The specs of the MPEG-2 were 1920x1080, 25 fps, PAL.  The ProRes is compressed to 720x405, 25 fps, pixel Aspect Square, Alpha None/Ignore, Field: Upper, Audio 48kH-16bit.  In MPEG Streamclip: "Interlaced scaling" was selected. Is that correct or should I have selected "Deinterlace video"?  Is that the culprit for the horizontal disaligned layers when the video stops running?
If this is not the cause, does anybody know a solution please?  Many thank yous in advance.

this is correct, do not worry. on stop, you only see one field. on run, you see both fields.
if you work with deinterlaced material, even on stop there will be no jagged lines. advantage. but you then have reduced your motion resolution to half (because both fields are identical now). disadvantage. so, what you want really depends on what you need your master for. usually, TV uses interlaced material.

  • Font names are invisible in Ai CS5 after upgrading to OSX 10.10 Yosemite

    Hello,
I am having a minor drawback on Adobe Illustrator CS5 after upgrading my iMac to OS X 10.10 Yosemite. The thing is when trying to select a font form a Type>Font selection mostly all font names are invisible. This only happens in Illustrator, Photoshop and Indesign works fine. I have attached a screenshot of what I am  seeing: after hovering with my mouse pointer over the particular font the name appears, but otherwise not.
I will also address this issue to Apple support as well.
    Waiting for your reply.

  • Strange Dark Shaded Jagged Line From Inside Glass(on LCD)

There is a strange jagged line showing up on the screen. It's not obtrusive, so I don't necessarily mind it, but the fact that from time to time I can notice it is bothering me. It's a lot harder to see when something really light or really dark colored is moved onto the spot it's at. It's not on the glass, it's under it, but the LCD doesn't show any normal sign of damage.
Here is an image of it: http://i.imgur.com/QdFLX.jpg
    Any ideas or experiences?

Contact Apple Service, iMac Service or Apple's Express Lane and get it repaired. Do note that if you have AppleCare's protection plan and you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you're eligible for onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine.

    sonjadg,
you can purchase a replacement pair of grey installation DVDs for your MacBook Pro from either Apple or iFixit. If Startup Manager is only showing an OS X Installer volume, then it sounds like the Mavericks installer had a problem midway through its installation process. To fix this, you’re going to need to erase your internal disk and reïnstall your original version of OS X from the grey Mac OS X Install DVD, use Software Update  to get it back to 10.6.8 (presuming that your MacBook Pro originally came with Snow Leopard), and then restore from Time Machine.
