Bad MBA design

I've had my MBA for a while now but had never taken it with me to travel. I had the opportunity to take it this weekend and discovered a major design flaw!
It look like the trackpad button touches the area of the screen right below the isight and, when the MBA is moved around with the lid closed, the two are in contact and rub against each other creating dark scratches on the edge of the screen!!!
This is really bad. I guess it doesn't show until you lug it around without the foamy paper thing that comes when the MBA ships! I guess I will start using it to prevent such problem.
Anybody noticed the same thing?

Looks like I'm not the only one then.
If you are going to transport it around without the foam thingy between the screen and the keyboard, I suggest that you try to put the least amount of pressure towards the central edge part of the MBA (right above and below the trackpad when the lid is closed) to avoid this problem!
I had my MBA in my messenger bag and the fact that the top part was being compressed created this problem. Also, the fact that I was picking up the MBA by holding on the central edge of the MBA to take it out of my messenger bag probably aggravated the issue!
Be careful guys, this is obviously a design flaw. The rubber part around the screen should have been thicker or the trackpad should sit a little lower....
Cheers...

  • Bad OOP design?

    I have to access some data before my program starts (to prevent a slow down while the program is running). The thing is, I need to init some objects before my program loads. It works fine now, but when I do the thing that I need the objects for, it hangs for a very short time (while it creates them, you see, right now I can only create them when the action they are needed for is called; it is to detailed to explain). The problem is it just looks unprofessional. Anyway, java.awt.component has a method that would make it possible for me to do the object creation before the program starts. Would it be bad to make a class that extends Component, and then define a method in there that get the information I need to makes it possible for me to create my object before the program starts? Is this bad OOP design?
    Thank you!
    Joshua

    Of course you can't really initialize stuff "before your program loads" since the initialization is part of your program, just before you program tells the user it's loaded.
    Probably the way to intialise stuff early is to do it in static, which will happen as soon as the class loads.
    Mostly you can do it with static object variables initialised to new objects.
    But you can get fancy and put a static code block in the class. Just a piece of code under
    static {
      .. do some initialization

  • MEGA 180: A story of stupidity mixed up with bad product design

    This is more for a word of caution to Mega180 users and future owners.
    A bit angry as I managed to burn ( physically ) 2 harddrives  because of carefulness about 10 mins.
    Spend quite some time looking for a SATA to ATI power converter while looking for a solution to CPU temp problem. Could not find one ( and  I don't know if any one does it )
    As my old HD did not start the OS on Mega180 for some data transfer I was not able to use my USB external HD. So I decided to connect old HD as slave and do a HD to HD transfer. Here comes the bad design, the HD connection cable specifies a slot for a slave HD however there is only one power connector (ATI) for supported IDE HD. and there is a useless SATA power connector,it is useless as MEGA 180 does not support SATA.
    Here comes the stupidity, for a min I came up with the bright idea of using the CD drives power connector ( I now remember that I ruled this option earlier, I wish I remembered it all along) As there is always a current on this cable (when there is a power connection - for the HIFI mode to work ) I guess some static electricity effected my HD. Not having realised the HD is already affected, I swapped the cables as the HD connection cable is not long enough to keep 2 HDs in a steady state.
    As a result both my HDs are now not working, when I tried the original master HD I was horrified to see a spark and some fume
    I wish I never tried to use my old graphics card - which I wanted only for the DVI support. This led to CPU temperatures of average 70 degree celcius and when I ever I tried to use the PC properly I was had to turn it off due to extreme temperatures over 75 degree celcius.
    All I was after is a troublefree smooth working nice looking PC, yet I am stuck now... I am both upset for the data I lost as well as hours I spend in trying to put this thing together. I will decide in the morning to return or keep the product. If I keep it the next challenge will be getting my external HD to run an OS as I need to save up again to buy a new HD, I was hoping my next HD would be a SATA one :(
    This is definately a bitter lesson. Such a pity that with just a little more effort MSI could have really improved the profuct most are listed here but I want to summarise:
    1. before getting the new product out try fitting a new graphics card and a TV card and operate both for 2 hours... That is if you could fit them both in the first reason why you could not is the cables from power supply is unnecessarily long for supplying power to the board and unsuitably located. the best you could do is place them all infront of the cpu fan.
    2. It is really great to have detachable ODD and HD yet Floppy drive ( card reader ) bay is static
    3. a better location for CPU or card slots would have contributed to airflow far more.
    Better close here... I am still not sure if positives of the product companates all the negatives.

    Simply, be aware that the power cable for the CDRom is live most all the time that your backpanel power cord is plugged in. Its for the support of CD/MP3 in HI-Fi mode. If you shut down your system, and not unplug the power, and you try to connect or disconnect anything to the IDE cable, and you are using the power cable for the CD, you can cause static/surging on the component you are hooking up....
    If you must hookup an alternate drive [slave] for data dumping/imaging etc. use a Y cable from the HDD power cable. It only activates when the PC power switch is utilized....

  • N97 BAD Software Design

    This phone, the WORST Nokia phone I've ever had, and very probably the last, never ceass to amaze me with just how BADLY the software is designed.
    The latest disaster: I am trying to set up the WiFi to connect to my wireless router.  OK, great it sees the network and asks for a Passkey (as it is encrpted); gives me an input box to enter the passkey.  Oh Dear, my passkey is 64 digits long and consists of random lower case, uppercase letters and numbers.  It is a strong encryption key.
    But do, Nokia SERIOUSLY expect me to type this in digit by digit??  I have looked in vain for ways to enter this passkey efficiently - the obvious way - pasting it from off the clipboard (oh yes, I've successfully got the key pasted ONTO the clipboard from a text editor); appears to be too clever for Nokia.
    Unless I have overlooked something, there appears to be no way to cut & paste into the Passkey dialog, and apparently no way to do it from the keyboard either.
    SO I guess WiFi is another feature I won't be using on this **bleep** phone!

    Ok, I'll try and save you a bit of time with a medium as apposed to a short cut. Put your passcode in notes in the Office app, then WITHOUT using QWERTY open the note youve done, run your finger over the text, select copy. Go to search for wifi, when asked for passkey don't use QWERTY just tap it and when virtual keypad come up tap the box next to tick with 3 horizontal line in it, select paste, and there you go, takes abot 7 seconds once you have passket saved.
    Good Luck

  • Bad Software Design

    As prompted by the support tech who completely agreed with me, I post my anger here to warn others of the potential one click destruction..
    Im a new Ipod user, a classic.. A nice device. Itunes is alright over all except where warning of bad user decisions is concerned..
    I wanted to reorganize my library having just gotten it all nice and neat on the ipod. So I deleted all my old music folders, cleared my playlists in Itunes and clicked sync.. No warning, nothing, and in a few seconds 20 years, gone with the closest back up in a computer so old its doubtful the drives still work, provided i can find it.
    You would think in logical software design, where the syncing of drives is concerned.. In the event a sync would erase all data on a device, a warning would be appropriate. Now if there was a warning, with one of those don't bother me again with this checkbox, that box shouldn't be there.
    ITunes, you suckzors and I'll be rid of you as soon as i find an alternative that I like.

  • Non-numeric primary is good or bad for design

    In general, the primary key created using the non-numeric key is good or bad ?  Any specific reason?

    Numeric datatype is good for primary key because :
    1.No need to implicit conversion
    2.NO overhead in using a NUMBER datatype in joins!!
    3.Auto primary key index will be used since there is no conversion require for numeric datatype.
    All I learn and came to know from Sybrand's reply at below link:
    optimum datatype for primary key column O9i - Oracle Database

  • Bad SmartScript Designer popup behavior

    All,
    I'm hoping someone will recognize a simple but EXTREMELY annoying problem I'm having when designing SmartScripts:
    When I drag a question, page, or branch from the palette to the design pane, the select applet appears BEHIND my main application window,
    so I have to minimize the application, pick the question (or page or whatever), click OK, restore the application, drag the next question,
    minimize the application, pick the question... and so forth, ad nauseum.
    This is for a customer-facing class, so I'd like to:
    (a) Resolve it, and
    (b) Show customers how to resolve it if they encounter it.
    Anyone ever seen anything like this? It happens on my machine with IE6 SP 2, but not with IE6 SP1, so I'm fairly sure it's related to IE6 security
    settings, though I didn't find a difference between the settings on the two machines.

    I just sent a feedback to Apple, hoping they will find and solved the problem here...

  • Is this a bad J2EE design?

    Hi, I've implemented a bulletin board system with JSPs and Stateless session beans. The JSP assigns 1 Stateless Session EJB to each client's HttpSession. And if the session times out, a new session is created and a new reference to a Stateless Session EJB is obtained.
    I've seen an example that uses 1 Session EJB per JSP page (rather than 1 per client's session). But it seems to me if you do it with 1 Session EJB per JSP, then you'd have to synchronize access to this shared Session EJB, since the JSP is executed by multiple threads at the same time. Since the majority of the work is done in my Session EJB (accessing the entity beans), it seems like having to synchronize access to it would defeat the whole purpose of having multithreaded JSP execution in the first place.
    Any thoughts?

    Yes could you please explain how its different for
    Session Facade Session Beans (SFSB)? SFSB means StateFul Session Bean. You cannot call stateful session beans conccurently. It will cause container to throw an exception.
    If you use stateless beans (doesnt matter if it's a facade or not) than you dont have to worry about this.
    Because thats
    actually my setup. I have 1 Session Bean per Client
    and each session bean calls methods on the entity
    beans that map to the database tables.

  • Components inside components - Bad design?

    Is it bad practice/design to nest components inside components using Flex 4? Should I simply be creating components and inserting them into my main application as below, or doesn't it matter?
    <com:MyComp1>
        <com:MyComp2>        <com:MyComp3>
                <s:Label text="This is a test."/>        </com:MyComp3>
        </com:MyComp2></com:MyComp1>

    It all depends. Knowing nothing about the components, all I can say is that it depends on the complexity of the components individually and collectively as well as what level of reuse you may desire.

  • Overloaded radio buttons -- good GUI design?

    I don't know where else to ask this. What do you think about overloading radio buttons with multiple functions? I have made an update to my Interactive Color Wheel that uses this technique. I haven't released it yet, but it is available here:
    * http://r0k.us/rock/Junk/SIHwheel.html
    It offers eight different sorts of 1567 colors and their names. That seemed to me to be way too many radio buttons; there were originally just three sorts and three buttons. I made a second row that contains the five new sorts accessed via two buttons. The sorts on each button are closely related, riffs on a theme if you will. Consecutive clicks on one of these two buttons will rotate through its functions, with the button text and toolTip updated to match its current sort and state.
    I won't try describing more -- just use it, and let me know what you think. Intuitive? Ugly? Bad GUI design? Other comments?

    RichF wrote:
    Don't forget to take Spot, the Magic Color Dog for a walk! I recommend a different sort than the default [alphabetically], but you can change sorts on the fly. (Try [by hue], or one of the three Hilbert sorts.) In fact, Spot isn't stopping you from doing anything. Well, you'd have to have him go really slow to type in a hex color.
    I was really, really amazed how fast Spot can run. With the gauge fully to the right, the timer has a specified delay of 0, so he's running as fast as everything else in the program lets him. There's a LOT going on, yet Spot can traverse all 1567 colors in mere seconds.
    [add] It just occurred to me, maybe I should set a minimum update rate. I don't want it to cause someone to have an epileptic seizure. I'm thinking of setting 10 updates a second as the fastest it would go. What do you guys think?Actually it made me have to kill the JVM to stop the applet (closing the web page didn't work, apparently the new Java plugin sandboxing doesn't work). Only the JList was updating at full speed, not the color wheel.
    This one I did not do. There was a complication with intensity. It uses a quantized color space, with intensity almost ranging from 0..74. I say almost because this integral range also includes 0.5. I forced that in so the value after black on a 0.255 scale would not be 4, but 2. The third value is 4, and the rest of the time it jumps by 3 or 4 on the 255 scale.
    Once I decided to keep the intensity buttons as they were, it did not make sense to change the tile width buttons either. Their range is only 10..15, so IMO the [-] and [+] buttons work well.Just as a demo how to do that with JSpinner (JSlider is much harder to have non linear scales):
    import java.awt.EventQueue;
    import java.awt.FlowLayout;
    import javax.swing.JFrame;
    import javax.swing.JSpinner;
    import javax.swing.SpinnerNumberModel;

  • Apple case design flaw - broken ipad

    Having recently just purchased my shiny new ipad, I made use of the apple supplied case by putting it in the stand position so that I could watch the screen without holding it.
    The audio noise was enough for it to lose its balance and topple of the side breaking my ipad. Not a happy customer.
    Please be aware of using the case as a stand as it is not fit for purpose.

    2 things:
    i have this case and there is NO WAY i have enough volume, even at full blast with MANOWAR playing out of it that it will topple anywhere!!
    2nd: you used your ipad in its case, in the bathroom whilst you were having a bath??? and now your hunting out an exscuse that your ipad mystically flipped into the bath and got ruined??
    if the case is used correctly the chances of the ipad "falling" over are VERY slim! its sits very stable and erect when the back of the caqse is slotted into the slot correctly. on a STABLE SURFACE its not going anywhere unless its wobbled or knocked quite considerably!
    i would suggest you had it "balanced" on the edge of the bath..and it wasnt anywhere near stable! the thing that isnt "fit for purpose" is your foolishness at using your ipad, unprotected, next to a bath of water!!
    sorry for your loss, but your gonna have to bite the bullet and accept its user error rather than bad product design!
    EDIT:
    in fact to give you the benfit of the doubt im sitting here with my ipad (in its case standing upright) watching SIN CITY (plenty of gunfire and violent LOUD action!) and typing away on my keyboard replying to you! the Ipad is perfectly stable with me hammering away my keyboard and watching the film! its simply not going anywhere! and it certainly wont go anywhere at full volume watching this movie!!

  • DECODE function to validate date value and sort the records

    Hi Friends,
    I am looking for some query which can give me the required output,
    I need to do this using SQL query only and I have tried using the MIN() and MAX() functions it was working fine with limited data, now after inserting the last record(in the below table) which has date for start_range and end_range in(mm/dd/yyyy hh24:mi:ss) format.
    Because the data type is VARCHAR2 if I am using the MIN() function it is sorting as a string value, hence the min date is incorrect. I tried using validating the value to date or non date and tried to using MIN() and MAX() functions using the DECODE function, I am getting this error "ORA-01840: input value not long enough for date format".
    select table_name,
    DECODE(substr(START_RANGE,3,1)||substr(START_RANGE,6,1)||substr(START_RANGE,11,1)||substr(START_RANGE,14,1)||substr(START_RANGE,17,1),'// ::',
    to_char(min(to_date(start_range,'mm/dd/yyyy hh24:mi:ss')),'MM/DD/YYYY HH24:MI:SS'),min(start_range)) MIN_RUNS_START_RANGE,
    DECODE(substr(END_RANGE,3,1)||substr(A.END_RANGE,6,1)||substr(END_RANGE,11,1)||substr(END_RANGE,14,1)||substr(END_RANGE,17,1),'// ::',
    to_char(max(to_date(END_RANGE,'mm/dd/yyyy hh24:mi:ss')),'MM/DD/YYYY HH24:MI:SS'),max(END_RANGE)) MAX_RUNS_END_RANGE
    from MY_TABLE
    GROUP BY table_name,
    (substr(START_RANGE,3,1)||substr(START_RANGE,6,1)||substr(START_RANGE,11,1)||substr(START_RANGE,14,1)||substr(START_RANGE,17,1)),
    (substr(END_RANGE,3,1)||substr(END_RANGE,6,1)||substr(END_RANGE,11,1)||substr(END_RANGE,14,1)||substr(END_RANGE,17,1))
    Can sombody please advise what is the best way I can query this data with the required output.
    The following are the source table and records and the out put records using the sql query.
    MY_TABLE
    TABLE_NAME(VARCHAR2),START_RANGE(VARCHAR2),END_RANGE(VARCHAR2)
    TABLE1,1000,10000

    TABLE2,EEEF,GGGG
    TABLE3,01/01/2011 00:00:00,01/31/2011 23:59:59

    TABLE_NAME,MIN(START_RANGE),MAX(END_RANGE)
    TABLE1,1000,20000
    TABLE2,ABCD,GGGG
    TABLE3,01/12/2010 00:00:00,01/31/2011 23:59:59
    Thanks
    Kalycs

    i also think this is a very bad table design ...
    but if you are not able to change it, you could split the select (date and non-date data) and combine the result with UNION like this:
    with t as
    SELECT 'TABLE1' table_name,'1000' start_range,'10000' end_range FROM dual UNION
    SELECT 'TABLE2','ABCD','EEEE' FROM dual UNION
    SELECT 'TABLE3','01/12/2010 00:00:00','12/31/2010 23:59:59' FROM dual UNION
    SELECT 'TABLE1','10001','20000' FROM dual UNION
    SELECT 'TABLE2','EEEF','GGGG' FROM dual UNION
    SELECT 'TABLE3','01/01/2011 00:00:00','01/31/2011 23:59:59' FROM dual
    SELECT table_name,
           TO_CHAR(MIN(TO_DATE(start_range, 'MM/DD/YYYY HH24:MI:SS')), 'MM/DD/YYYY HH24:MI:SS'),
           TO_CHAR(MAX(TO_DATE(end_range, 'MM/DD/YYYY HH24:MI:SS')), 'MM/DD/YYYY HH24:MI:SS')
    FROM t
    WHERE start_range LIKE '%/%/%:%:%'
    GROUP BY table_name
    UNION
    SELECT table_name,
           MIN(start_range),
           MAX(end_range)
    FROM t
    WHERE start_range NOT LIKE '%/%/%:%:%'
    GROUP BY
        table_name;
    TABLE_ MIN_VALUE           MAX_VALUE
    TABLE1 1000                20000
    TABLE2 ABCD                GGGG

  • Browser Lab displays wrong for IE8 ?

    I am trying Browser Lab for the second time, so I'm not experienced! However BL's Flash display of IE8 (Win)  is significantly different from my own local IE8 (Win) display.
    I have screenshots but this Adobe Forum message app' does not seem to have a working "Insert Image" function (it is greyed-out) - f.y.i website I am testing is www.sebra.org.uk.
    So - there is a gif inside a Div component of my webpage which is not displaying at all (BL displays red "X" and the name of the Div) and the ribbon menu underneath is displaced by maybe 5 pixels vertically.
    Since the whole point of Browser Lab is to highlight inconsistencies in browsers maybe this is a serious flaw (if I changed my code to adjust BL's render, then my version of IE8 would display badly aligned design - I have no idea how to restore the missing gif in BL!).
    Alternatively maybe I have a glitch in my desktop system (Vista).
    Any ideas about this glitch?
    aye

    Does the issue still occur for you? I seem unable to reproduce this.

  • EEWB: Change tab tittle when creating an extension type ACTIVITY_H

    Hi CRM Gurus,
    I am using transaction EEWB to extend the object BUSINESS_ACTIVITY. There are two extension types: CUSTOMER_H and ACTIVITY_H. Both of them create an additional tab that contains the new fields. I have two questions about this:
    1.- Which differences exist between them?? When must be
        used one and when the other? Can I use both at the
        same time?
    2.- With the method CRM_CUSTOMER_H_SET_TITLE of
        the  Badi definition CRM_CUSTOMER_H_BADI, you can
        change the tittle of the additional tab when using
        CUSTOMER_H extension type. But when you are using
        ACTIVITY_H extension type, instead
        CRM_CUSTOMER_H_BADI the system triggers
        CRM_ACTIVITY_H_BADI, and that Badi doesn´t have any
        method to change the tab tittle. Anybody knows how
        to change the tittle tab in this case???
    Any suggestion will be of great aid.
    Thanks in advance.
    Rosa

    Carlos,
    The difference between ACTIVITY_H and CUSTOMER_H is very simple:
    CUSTOMER_H is an SAP delivered segment of the business transaction to contain CUSTOMER defined Header fields for the business transaction.
    ACTIVITY_H is an SAP delivered segment of the business transaction designed to hold data specific to business transactions that have a business object type of "Activity"
    It is possible to use both at the same time.  The normal practice is to use CUSTOMER_H for any new customer fields.
    The reason why you don't have a BADI method to change the title of the fields on the tab that corresponds to ACTIVITY_H is that the CUSTOMER_H badi is designed to help "build a tab from the ground up".  In other words the ACTIVITY_H is used to help reflect new behavior in that segment, while CUSTOMER_H badi is used to define how that segment will behave.
    The simple solution is to use CUSTOMER_H.  I really have never seen a valid reason to enhance the other segments of the business transaction header.
    Let me know if you need additional clarification,
    Stephen

  • Experiences with Adobe XPAAJ, XML Parsers, OC4J /AS 10.1.2,10.1.3 and DB10g

    Over the past couple of weeks we have been working on a solution which uses the newly available adobe XPAAJ api's (XML/PDF Access API for Java) for Java.
    The client has a legacy requirement to where users are issued with a pdf form which they complete, save and upload to the server via a JSP. A neat bit of Java code utilizing the XPAAJ API's then strips out the form entered data and spits out XML. This is then parsed and inserted into relational tables within the schema.
    Our solution needs to be deployed to an Oracle stack. However we ran into a number of problems when deploying the solution to AS 10.1.2. The adobe API's are not compatible with the Oracle XML Parsers. When extracting the form data, no error is reported and the code which performs the xml parsing just fails. Very nasty.
    The main problem has been that Oracle XDK libraries have been hard-coded into the classpath of the container using the referential JAR file Class-Path mechanism. Altering this has required the use of the JRE extension library mechanism, or altering the boot classpath of the JVM when it is launched to load the alternative XML parser implementation instead. While this works, it has been an unsupported operation since the effect of this change is not limited to a specific application – it’s effect are felt across the entire container and this may lead to unpredictable results at runtime.

    We did look at a number of other solutions including embedding the java classes I'd written into the database. After loading the apache Xerces api's into our schema we hit upon the same problem. It seems that the same thing happens in the database and the Oracle XML parser is used by default.. Please see SR Number : 6153038.994 on Metalink.
    If you can upgrade to AS 10.1.3 then you can follow the excellent how to at:http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/java/oc4j/10131/how_to/how-to-swapxmlparser/doc/readme.html . Demo code can be found at: http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/java/oc4j/10131/how_to/how-to-swapxmlparser/how-to-swapxmlparser.zip
    The how-to details how to swap xml parsers within the application server.
    Other possible solutions that are also available include:
    - Shelling out to the OS from the DB or Apps Server, You can then execute the app as a command line app with a custom classpath. Very bad architecture design.
    - Setting up an RMI client / server application where client is the db or apps server. You can find examples of this on the web. google 'Simple RMI example'.
    - Bootstrapping the XML parser in AS 10.1.2 (unsupported).
    I hope people have found this informative. It might save someone a lot of time.

    "When I was installing SOA 10.1.3.1.0 on oracle 10.2.0.1 and it was giving error that it needs minimum 10.2.0.3, just wondering 10.1.2.0.2 + SOA =will this work?"
    so you talk about the db version. SOA 10.1.3.x runs on 10.2.0.1 and above (I ran for the longest time on XE) and if I remember correctly that's a warning, and not a hard prereq.
    Regarding Appserver versions - soa 10.1.3 runs on AS 10.1.3 only
