"Bad parameter" when starting Acrobat XI Pro (Windows 7 Pro 64-bit)

The first time I start Acrobat XI Pro each day (whether directly by clicking on the Acrobat icon or indirectly by clicking on a PDF file), I receive a "bad parameter" screen and I can't go any farther with the program. At that point, I close Acrobat. For the rest of the day, when I start Acrobat again, the program opens without a hitch. I've searched the Adobe Forums (and more broadly using Google), but I have not found any discussion of the "bad parameter" startup problem, just discussions about encountering "bad parameter" when trying to delete pages. Any explanation for the startup problem? Any cure? Thanks.

Try going to HELP and first running a repair, then run the updates until you are at 11.0.06.

I don't know if this is the right section but I experience the following issue with Adobe Acrobat Pro XI installed on Windows 8.1. When I start Acrobat the related window opens normally but, after some scroll up and down along the document, it blocks, Acrobat doesn't respond to any command I can give and, in place of the pointer arrow, a vertical bar, as the one of the text editor appears. The only way I can stop Acrobat is by means of the task manager. I tried to de-install and the re- install Acrobat but the behaviour is always the same. What can I do??

Have you opened Acrobat and gone to Help>Updates to get an updated install?

  • Font loading when starting Acrobat - Acrobat hangs

I have the problem of a kind of "hang-up" of Acrobat 9 when opening a file. Actually this problem started with Acrobat 6 or 5 I think and I have not found a solution or a reason why. Also I did stopped searching for solutions some time ago and tried to live with this feature of Acrobat.
Today I started searching again and found this here:
    http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.3bc3a7f1/22
I investigated some time in verifying that the font loading is causing my problem.
    This is what happens:
    - Acrobat is not running. I open a PDF file. Acrobat starts, the file is opening after a few seconds, fast enough. After 10 seconds or so the application hangs and does not react. A second tab is opening and when you look into the task manager you see that csrss.exe is running with 50% CPU usage on top of Acrobat with the remaining 50%. After - it seems a long time, like leaning back and having a cup of coffee - the system comes back an one can work with the PDF file just like normal.
    - When you just close the file and not Acrobat as such and open a new file, the hang-up does not occur.
    - Only when you close Acrobat and open a new file it happens again.
My work-around after knowing this - after a few years of searching - is to to start Acrobat on booting the PC by putting the application into autostart and never close it during the day.
I can not uninstall fonts. I need them all.
Now the question: Is there anything new on this subject? Is there a way to disable font loading when starting Acrobat?
I have tried some of the speed-up tools, that disable some plug-ins. They do not help.
Thanks for some feedback and may be a better solution than mine.
(If only Acrobat would load the fonts first, tell me it is loading the fonts and how long this takes, and then open the file I need to read - this would be nice ... )

I use XP Pro and have the same problem on other computers with XP Pro.
For the fun of it I un-installed Acrobat 9 and re-installed and - surprise surprise. No hang-up. Just perfect.
I started and closed Acrobat several times and every time I think the hang-up, that used to be a minute and more before re-installing - is a little longer. At least it feels like.
I remember I had the same observation when I upgraded to Acrobat 9. But a few days later the hang-up was there again.
I will observe ... and keep you updated.
I am using type 1 and true type fonts and Adobe Type manager to manage ma many fonts.
On page display I have "use local fonts" checked. I don't see a difference, when I un-check.
Ideas to solve the issue are aprreciated

  • When starting up too many windows open up.

When starting up too many windows open my 2010 Macbook White with upgraded Lion and apparently slows it down. How do I prevent unwanted windows from opening up on startup?

When you shut down your machine, you get a dialog box that asks you to confirm the shutdown.  There is a little check box there that, by default, will re-open all of the applications that were open when you shutdown.  You can uncheck that to prevent those applications from reopening.
I'm guessing that you do not have a bunch of applications set up to automatically start under your user settings.  If doing the above doesn't work, let us know and we'll go through checking for any start programs set to start when you login.

  • Why when istalling acrobat 8 does windows ask for a vista cd??

Why when istalling acrobat 8 does windows ask for a vista cd?????

    Hi,
It seems to me that the installer is looking for AdobePDF.dll.
If so, then when it asks you to insert Vista CD-ROM to find AdobePDF.dll,
go to the AdobePDF.dll_64 in DATA1.CAB folder which is included in the Adobe install files on the disk.
Copy the file to your system and rename it AdobePDF.dll and point the install program to that file.
Revert in case of any issues.
    Regards,
    Ravi.

  • No Protection Tools! I have enabled enhanced security. This is Acrobat XI on Windows 7 64-bit. Did same install on a Win8 server and it's fine.

I just want the protection tools to show on the Tools dropdown! So I can use them...

    Hi Sara,
Thanks for putting me in the right place. I'm not much of an
    online-community person!
Here's what happened after your email:
    1. I went into Acrobat and clicked the down arrow as you described. I
previously had been clicking in the View menu. I saw the Protection
tools and I was so excited.
    2. So then I clicked on "allow multiple panels open" whereupon the
Protection tools disappeared! They did not reappear when I unclicked the
    "allow multiple panels open".
    3. Remembered that I hadn't reinstalled the updates after reinstalling
Acrobat in hopes that would fix this problem, so I installed the
    updates. I'm now on 11.0.07.
Sadly, still no protection tools appearing in either the View-> Toolsets
or the down-arrow in the upper-right corners of the Tools panel. Bummer.
This is so strange, since the same installation worked great on our Win8
    server!

  • I cannot open this PDF file in Acrobat 8 Pro or in Acrobat Reader on Windows 7 64-bit

I have a PDF file that I could open on my Windows XP 32-bit laptop in Acrobat 8 Pro or in Acrobat Reader.  I then upgraded to a Windows 7 64-bit laptop.  But now in Win7-64, I cannot open this same file using the same apps (Acrobat 8 Pro & Acrobat Reader XI).
When I try to open it in Acrobat 8, it does not load and instead a popup windows appears saying -
    Adobe Updater
Some components needed to complete this operation are missing but information about them may be available on the Adobe website. Would you like to search the Adobe website for the missing components?
And I can choose either the OK or Quit buttons.  When I click OK, a web browser starts and goes to this website -
    http://www.adobe.com/special/adobe_update_manager/?type=Filter&name=FOPN_foweb&version=0.0 .0.0&lang=en_US&os=Windows&osver=6.1.7601&appid=acrobat8pro-en_US&cpu=intel
    This webpage says -
    Adobe Update Manager
Adobe cannot locate the requested plugin. New plugins will be listed on this page. Currently there are no plugins.
So now I am stuck, no direction to go.  I am left without any solution from Adobe for Acrobat on this file.
When I try to open this PDF file in Reader, it does not load and instead a web browser is spawned loading the webpage -
    http://plugin.fileopen.com/Default.aspx?bhcp=1
This is the FileOpen Plug-in for Adobe Acrobat/Reader, which prompts to -
Please click OK to download the FileOpen Plug-in Installer for Adobe Acrobat/Reader
I click on OK, download and run the Installer file, accept the terms, and installed the FileOpen Client (x64) B928.  Upon completion, it prompts to Finish.  But it does not automatically bring Reader up or try to load the file.  So I try again to load the PDF file into Reader.  But once again, the file does not load and the web browser is spawned loading the same FileOpen Plug-in Installer link.  I click OK again, and start the same FileOpen Client process.  This time, it recognizes that I have FileOpen Client installed, and the window gives me two choices, Repair or Remove.  So since I apparently need this Plug-in, I choose Repair.  The process seems to complete the Repair.  But when I try to load the file, it still brings me back to the FileOpen Plug-in webpage.  So now I am stuck again, and left without any solution from Adobe for Reader on this file.
I tried Adobe support.  But apparently Adobe does not support past releases of their products (Acrobat 8), and also does not give free support for the current version of their free products (Reader XI).
    Can this be fixed?

How is Acrobat 8 not fully Windows 7 compatible?  I see discussions on this Adobe Community saying how Acrobat 8 does work on Windows 7 and with 64-bit.  It appears that if Acrobat 8 is updated to the latest version, then this should fix AA8-Win7 issues.  And I am at the latest AA8 version, 8.3.1.
And how are Acrobat 8 and Reader XI are not compatible?  I have always had Acrobat and Reader installed on the same PC, without ever having any issues.  And Adobe allows the installation of one after the other.  So apparently Adobe allows them both to exist together.  If they are incompatible, then why would Adobe allow them to exist together?
Anyway, I did uninstall the FileOpen Plug-in and the Reader XI, then reinstalled the FileOpen Plug-in.  So now Reader is not installed and only Acrobat 8 is installed.  I then tried to load the PDF file, but I still get the Acrobat 8 error described above.

I have a solution for your problem, it took a little investigating and work to get FaceTime for Mac working. Here's what I did: Go to the folder /Applications then right click on FaceTime.app go into /Contents/LaunchAgents and look for two files "com.apple.imagent.plist" and "com.apple.apsd-ft.plist" and copy them into your /Home/yourusername/Library/LaunchAgents. If you can't find "com.apple.apsd-ft.plist" do a Google search for it and download it, the name will be "com.apple.apsd.plist.txt", do a cmd-I on it and rename it "com.apple.apsd-ft.plist" put this file in the same folder as "com.imagent.plist", launch FaceTime and if your webcam lights up, your good to go.
    Hope this helps.

  • Re: ATI HD 2600 PRO WINDOWS 7 64 BIT BOOTCAMP DRIVER ERROR

Okay - I *think* I was able to get the modified INF to work properly now - it turns out there were many more instances where changes needed to be made that my original procedure did not address. The updated procedure is below with additional steps added.
Procedure to manually update iMac Radeon HD 2600 PRO video card under Windows 7 (64 bit).
    Rationale:
    > Boot Camp drivers incorrectly identify the video card my 24" iMac (Dual core; 2.8 GHz - graphics card is shown as a "ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600 XT") - this has been a long-standing problem when using my iMac under Boot Camp. There have been reports about how to update the drivers manually by obtaining them from ATI/AMD then installing them.
    Background:
    > When I was previously running Windows XP, I was able to perform the graphics driver update per the online instructions, without any problems.
    > When I updated to Windows 7, 64-bit (because I was updated my Mac OS to 10.7 [Lion] and Windows XP was no longer supported in Boot Camp), I could no longer update the graphic card drivers to the Win7 64-bit version (it was giving an error that the driver was not supported).
    > The solution I finally came upon was to modify the installer .INF file that comes with the drivers from AMD. I take no credit for this, except from the fact that I adapted a procedure I found for doing this for graphics cards in notebooks. The original place I found this is here <http://forum.notebookreview.com/gaming-software-graphics-cards/370695-guide-upda ting-your-ati-drivers-manually.html>.
NOTE & DISCLAIMER: I don't claim to fully understand every step that is going on here, nor if every step is needed. I based this on the procedure referenced in link immediately above and it seems to be working for me (that is, my graphics card driver was updated for Win7, 64-bit just like had been previously under WinXP) - YMMV.
    >> This procedure was done with the AMD Radeon™ Desktop Video Card Drivers for "64 bit Windows Vista/Windows 7 "; Version 11.7, posted 2011-07-27 (main page: http://support.amd.com/US/Pages/AMDSupportHub.aspx)
    1. Driver only was downloaded from AMD.
    2. Downloaded file was installed to default location: C:\ATI
    3. Gather info about the graphics card:
    a. Open the Device Manager (Start>Computer [right-click]>Properties)
    b. Expand the "Display Adapters" item to reveal the GPU (mine was listed as "ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600 XT")
    c. Right-click on the GPU and select "Properties"
    d. Click the "Details" tab in the Properties window.
    e. Click the drop-down under "Property" (top item should say "Device description) - find the item in the list that says "Hardware Ids"
    >> There were four values for my card, shown below:
    PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9583&SUBSYS_0083106B&REV_00
    PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9583&SUBSYS_0083106B
    PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9583&CC_030000
    PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9583&CC_0300
    f. Right click on the first value and select "Copy" - paste it into a separate document.
    g. Go back and click the drop-down under "Property" - find the item in the list that says "Inf section" (it was far down the list).
    h. Copy the value shown there and paste into a separate document; my value read: ati2mtag_M76
    4. Modify the INF file from AMD:
    a. First thing I did was make a copy of the directory containing the files that were installed in step 2 (located at C:\ATI) - my directory was called "11-7_vista64_win7_64_dd".
    b. Go into this path:  C:\ATI\Support\11-7_vista64_win7_64_dd\Packages\Drivers\Display\W76A_INF
    c. Find the INF files (icon is a document with a gear on it), that start with "C7..." and "CH..." (mine were called "C7122569" & "CH122569").
    d. Open the "C7..." file (it opens in Notepad).
    e. The first thing I did was find and replace all existing instances of  "M76" in the INF (I arbitrarily replaced it with the following value "M7a6"). There are a number of existing references to this property type in the original INF.
    > I do not know if this is absolutely necessary but I found that it helped me to distinguish what was originally there with what I was modifying.
    f. Do a "Find" command for "ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO" (if you search for a shorter phrase, be aware there are other "2600 PRO" cards in the list).
    > The exact line I found was <"ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO" = ati2mtag_RV630, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9589>
    g. Replace that line with the Inf section value and the first Hardware ID value, using the same format as the original line. The new entry I made read (notice that each successive entry has an addition <space> between the end of 'PRO' and the ending double quote):
    "ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO" = ati2mtag_M76, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9583&SUBSYS_0083106B&REV_00
    "ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO " = ati2mtag_M76, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9583&SUBSYS_0083106B
    "ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO  " = ati2mtag_M76, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9583&CC_030000
    "ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO   " = ati2mtag_M76, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9583&CC_0300
    h. Next do a find for all instances of "ati2mtag_RV630"; for every instance you will need to replace that value with " ati2mtag_M76".
    i. Next do another find for "RV630" and make sure to replace all instances with "M76" (this is to catch the couple of places where it doesn't have the "ati2mtag" prefix)
    j. Close the file, saving your changes.
    k. Repeat steps 4d - 4i, using the "CH..." file.
    > I personally do not think this is needed since I believe the "C7…" INF is for Windows 7 and "CH…" is for Vista, but I modified both anyway.
    5. Update the graphics driver using the modified INF files:
    a. Go back to the Device Manager and expand the "Display Adapters" item again to show the "ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600 XT" GPU
    b. Right-click on the GPU and select "Update Driver Software..."
    c. In the resulting window, choose "Browse my computer for driver software".
    d. I navigated to the "C7..." file along the following path: <C:\ATI\Support\11-7_vista64_win7_64_dd\Packages\Drivers\Display\W76A_INF>
    e. At this point, I was shown a window that showed "ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO" twice (that's all that was in the list). I selected the first instance and it moved on.
    f. I got a warning that the driver was unsigned, obviously I allowed it to move forward with the installation.
    g. The updating proceeded and the screen momentarily went black, twice. After the second time the description in the Device Manager changed to reflect that the GPU was now "ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO".
FINAL NOTE: as of right now everything seems to be running properly and I have experienced no problems or graphical glitches. If anyone reading this sees an obvious problem with what I've done, please let me know. I have run benchmarks between this and the standard installed mobility driver and I get about a 10% increase in overall FPS (using the free "NovaBench" app by NovaWave).
    < Edited By Host >

    look what this guy said:
    Hi Guys,
I've spent a few hours over the last week trying to find something that works to update the driver. Using the Mobility Modder from Driverheaven I managed to install the Catalyst 7.8 but not the actual driver - you need to modify the INF for this. The only problem is that I can't be sure what the differences are between the mobility 2600 and the standard-computer 2600. I would like to assume it's just a few settings such as power saving and interal/ external displays.
I tried to modify the INF and used the settings for the standard graphics card. It worked fine, but I put the original Apple driver back on because I didn't want to find out I was overclocking the Graphics CPU accidentally.
After using mobility modder I added this line just after the mobility 2300 graphics card entry:
    "ATI MOBILITY RADEON X2600 XT " = ati2mtag_RV630, PCI\VEN1002&DEV9583
If you notice and compare the mobility and standard entries, the mobilities have the same ati2mtag but followed by M-something rather than RV-something.
This appears to direct the INF to the correct setup of the Catalyst software for that card - as I say, I used the settings for the standard 2600 card and it installed ok. I didn't try any games though.
On another note, I'm resisting doing anything further or testing any games until I have the screen issue resolved - after exchanging the naff 20" screen with it's horizontal shading (a dark shade at the top to a light shade at the bottom - very noticeable with darkish solid colours!) I've found my new (more costly!) 24" is having some problems with picture breakup, though so far only in Vista which I installed via Bootcamp.
I wish Apple would get there act together. It's my first Apple and I was expecting great things! So far, I would have had less hassle if I had built my own computer with Vista on and thats saying something!!
    Matt
he added the RV630 string. but i tried that with my exact windows xp driver device ids and yes it still completed the installation successfully, but the fps sill stayed the same

Wow, that fixed? my problem also by disabling soundblaster enhancements. How were you able to figure that one out? I was trying to figure it'sout also many months ago when I first got windows 7 beta and couldn't do it. Anyway,
Seems like most people don't like this start navigation sound, but I do.
I don't like the fact of having to disable soundblaster enhancements also.
