Bad PBR Signal on OVS 3.2.6

Hello,
I have recently installed a couple of OVS 3.2.6 machines and an OVM manager 3.2.6. everything is working fine except when I try to install a Solaris 10 update 11 VMs. The OS installation on the VM goes fine up until the 1st reboot where i get the Bad PBR signal and the VM panics.
I have tried installing redhat VM and it working fine with no problems, so i am guessing that this problem has something to do with Solaris. any ideas?
Solaris 10 update 11 VM config:
Memory:4GB
CPU:1
Disk:40GB
Tried HVM and HVM with PV

  • Bad PBR Sig    nal?

It took me a while to install Solaris8 until I set jumpers on my cdrom to be master on ide2 and the harddrive master on ide1. now when i boot up, I get a "BAD PBR SIGNAL", after that, pushing enter would invoke cdrom bootup. What is this?

The error message <tt>Bad PBR Sig</tt> expands to "Bad partition boot record signature". That is, the solaris master boot record has tried to load the partition
boot record from the active partition, but this sector does not
contain a "valid boot sector signature" at offset 0x1fe (this
word should contain the value 0xaa55), and for that reason the
"boot code" in the invalid partition boot sector is <b>not</b>
    executed.
Is the hard disc set to LBA mode in the BIOS setup or is it forced to some other
mode? If you boot from the solaris hard disc and
press both left&right shift key while it starts booting, does it
    print "LBA" or "CHS"?

Sorry but it's not clear what else is going on - might be worth running a ODS based fdisk to clear the disk before installing Solaris?

  • Bad PBR Sig - Solaris 10 x86 06/06

    Hello all,
I have seen this error over and over... "Bad PBR Sig" and I have yet to find a way to fix it.
I am installing Solaris 10 on a brand new disk. When the installation asks me, I tell it to use the whole disk for Solaris. Call me crazy, but I would expect this to also configure the disk to be bootable. The installation proceeds without problem and then when it reboots, I get the error.
I have searched Sunsolve, Google and everywhere else I could think to look, but I cannot find an answer on how to fix it. I see lots of guesses as to why the problem shows up, but no step-by-step's on how to fix it.
My system is a basic Dell, P4 2Ghz, 512MB RAM, single 40GB HDD and a DVD-ROM drive. Nothing special here. No multi-booting, only one drive... just a simple, basic PC.
Windows installs fine, so I know it isnt the disk.
I understand that for some reason Solaris cant make a disk bootable during installation... which baffles me. Sometimes it seems to be able to and other times it cant. It just doesnt make sense to me how Windows can boot from any disk you give it, but Solaris has a fit.
Anyway, is there anyone out there who can help me make a disk bootable for Solaris 10 after its been installed? I am relatively new to this and it is most frustrating when something as simple as booting the OS that was just installed is do difficult.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help or point me to where I can find help.

I had the same problem in Solaris 10 X86 Update 8 (10/09). After reading this thread, it made me wonder "Why would the GUI install work, and a Custom JumpStart not?" Well, I looked at the way I was specifying the partition table in the jumpstart client profile, and found that when you use "partitioning explicit" I run into this problem. BUT! When I use "partitioning default" all works just fine.
So, rather than doing something like this:
    partitioning explicit
    filesys rootdisk.s0 32768 /
    filesys rootdisk.s1 8192 swap
    filesys rootdisk.s2 all overlap
    filesys rootdisk.s3 free /var
    I changed to doing this:
    partitioning default
    filesys any 32768 /
    filesys any 8192 swap
    filesys any free /var
So, whatever the suninstaller does differently using the second specification avoids the bug.
Also, I did verify, the "Bad PBR sig" error only comes up if installing onto a freshly installed disk, or in my case, a fresly created RAID set. (We have the X4150s with the StorageTek RAID controller.) Just for fun I re-jumpstarted a second time using the "partitioning explicit" method above, and the system booted just fine. So whatever the suninstaller does the first time around (when using "partitioning default") sticks. That's probably why this bug hasn't been caught in testing. Most (or many??) systems from Sun come pre-installed, and unless you re-configure your RAID volumes, you won't run into this problem.

  • Slice space limits? "BAD PBR SIG"

    Hi there,
Is there a slice space limit I should know about? I'm installing Solaris 8 on a Compaq proliant DL380, and I'm stumping them with my problem: I can install and boot Solaris with 3 18-GB drives in a RAID 5 array. But if I use 4 18-GB drives, although I can create my slices the way I want (one big fdisk partition, and a very customized slice layout with one big slice for data), solaris won't boot after the install. All I see is an error message in the lower-left corner of the screen, highlighted in red: "BAD PBR SIG". Help much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    -Neil

    Hi Neil,
your query is a bug. Bug Report for BugID 4304977
    workaround for this query:
limit the size of non-Solaris partitions, or move beyond
the Solaris boot partition and Solaris partition.
    Thanks.

  • Bad pr signal?

I recently installed Solaris 10 for the first time, but being that it was my first time, I can only assume something might have went wrong with the installation. Every time I start the computer, it fails to boot and says only "Bad PR Signal". Does anyone have any idea what this message means?

  • Bad wifi signal iphone 5

    Hi
After update 7.0.6 vy iphone 5 have troubles with wifi signal. Update 7.1 and 7.1.1 dosent remove this problem.
Reset network settings and hard reset and full recovery has not remove that bug.
What i need to do to resolve my problem?

    Shawn,
It sounds like this is an issue with your surroundings.  It doesn't seem to show the characteristics of a faulty card.
In general the 5GHz band isn't going to be great for distance use with a wireless router.  If you are trying to connect with the router outside of your house, then it's probably not going to show up.  5GHz doesn't travel well through walls either, so that could be an issue if you have lots of walls in your house.  Having a weak signal could also mean that your house paint or materials in the house may be bad for letting the 5GHz signal through.
If none of those apply, then there could be a problem with your router.  I would try fiddling with the settings on the router a bit and see what happens.  If it's still under warranty call the manufacturer, and they may be able to hook you up with a solution.  Another thing to try would be to connect to another 5GHz network if possible.  If the problem still persists I would try resetting all network settings (settings>general>reset>reset network settings), bearing in mind that this will delete all networks that you have connected to, and require you to put in all of your wireless network passwords again.  Don't worry about doing so though, it won't delete any data (music, videos, books, etc.) or any other settings that don't pertain to wireless network settings.
If none of the above solutions work for you, as a last resort you could either call up AppleCare, or head into the nearest Apple Store, and they should be able to help you out.
    Hope this helps,
    Ryan

  • Can a bad service/signal effect battery life?

The last few weeks I have been getting bad service from Sprint. It varies from low signal on the edge (o) network, romaining (Extended) , and sometimes nothing. Will this effect the life of the battery of my phone? It seems to have drained it very quickly the last few days.

Yes. The phone constantly searching for signal will cause the radio in the phone to be working harder. This in turn will cause the battery to drain faster.

  • MBP 5.1 I have a recent problem with airport connectivity. ethernet connection is working fine, but wifi has become extremely slow and bad functioning. signal is received, no problem with the wlan (my husband 's wifi with MBP is perfect) please help

I have a MBP 5.1 with snow leopard 10.6.8. It has been working fine until few days ago, when it started to have different problems:
    1) airport is not working well. it is extremely slow, has difficulties in fully loading pages, looses connectivity, It is not browser related, behaves thesame in safari or firefox; it is not the router/wlan; my husband mbp wifi works fine (as it was mine...) and iphone wifi is also working fine. it sees the signal and different networks. , it is also very very slow in opening skype (after that, it is working ok) if  I connect via ethernet cable to the same router, everything works perfectly and with the correct speed.could it be a damaged airport card? a software problem/corruption? logic board? (I hope not, the computer is out of apple care now....)
    2) after a certain time (more than hours) of use, the trackpad is behaving strangly, increase sensitivity to touch, unwanted selection of folders, files and text or images in web pages when i move the cursor, the cursor jumping all over the places while writing, ecc I have the impression it starts doing that when I use heavily the CPU ( and the temperature goes up). Is this again a problem of the mother/logic board?
I had recently serviced it since it was not booting properly, but except some permissions repaired, they did noit find anything wrong in the hard drive (which I have  now substituted with a SSD) or other hardware.
thanks in advance for any help/suggestions
    alessandra

I think I solved the wifi connection problem, just by switching off completely the router! sounds trivial, but in this case it worked!!!
the funny behaviour of the trackpad/cursor still persists. any suggestion???
    thanks again

  • Bad Start - Signal Help?

I was a Sprint customer but sick of Commodore 64 dialup modem speeds so decided to switch to Verizon when the 5S came out. The map shows great coverage in my area, but to be sure I chatted with CSR and they confirmed I am good.
I woke up at 3am on release day, went online and completed my order around 320am. Expected shipping date was only 4 days away (9/24/13).
Then I got an email saying 10/7/13. I can live with that.
I checked on the 7th and my status was "Unknown shipping" with something about payment not received yet (even though my card had been charged.) I called in and the CSR expected it would ship the 14th. Status online never changed even though they had my money.
On 10/14 I called and was told it is at Fedex, and I'd get a shipping code that night. Didn't happen.
On 10/15 I called and was told that I was the second one to have an issue, but she assured me it was at Fedex and I'd get a shipping code that night. Didn't happen.
On 10/16 I called and was told that the 5S was on backorder, so could expect in 11/11. That was a no-go so I had her check, and she saw that the order was complete so I'd get a shipping code that night.
On 10/17 I called and was told that something didn't look right, the CSR was going to talk to warehouse and call me back that night. No call.
On 10/21 I called and got an ITC tracking code, and was told I'd have status that night. I called that night and was told I needed to wait 24 hours for status updates.
On 10/22 I called and was told that I should not have had an ITC tracking code, that whoever did that was wrong, and he guaranteed it would go out tonight.
    FINALLY!
On 10/24 I received a call from the porting department. We went through and she confirmed that the port was all set.
I received my phone and (drumroll please) it would not activate. I called CSR and was told that the porting had not been entered yet, so to use my temporary phone number in the meantime. I don't have (nor did I want) a temporary number. He suggested I called porting.
Called porting, CSR couldn't figure out why. About 30 minutes later after elevating we had success! She called me on the line to test, and her call dropped. Sitting on my front porch I had one bar.
Most of my house has one or no bars. If I'm in the basement standing near a window I can get two. If I'm at the fence line of my far back yard I might even get three.
Needless to say - I'm not happy with the transition. And now I've gone from 5 bars with Sprint (they sent me a free Airave since they had a poor signal) to 0-1 bars with Verizon. What's the possible fix for 1) the repeated lies from CSR 2) the lack of CSR to see the actual coverage map and 3) my lack of coverage?
    - Rob

Only addressing the signal issue since trying to get a bally hooed new Apple device is going to be a real pain since everyone wants one.
In most cases there is no pin point for direct coverage. Look at a pie plate and make a pin hole in the center, then look at that pin hole as your cell tower. Closer to the tower gives better reception, farther away then the signal degrades. Verizon shows this map with all these red blotches, but there are white and gray blotches as well.
Take it from a business point of view when you are looking for service and the customer rep say's "Oh there is good coverage in your area" you believe them. Instead you know Sprint has good signal strength but you don't like their data speeds, Sprint is not fully out with their LTE service but calls are good. Verizon said everything was great but you never checked the service before you bought it. Yes in the area they might have service, and its 1x and 1 bar for voice service, you could try buying an extender from verizon but I think you will be wasting your money.
On T-Mobile certain devices have the ability to use your home wifi to make and receive calls, the iPhone alas has not the ability for it so that wouldnot help you. But you could ask a friend with one of their devices to let you see if their talk and data work better than what you have.
Sell the phone to another verizon customer to afford the Early Termination Fees and maybe ssome of the costs for a new device somewhere else.
    Good Luck

it is software or hardware problem

In this case it would be worth trying a software repair to at least rule out a software problem:
    1. Download the PC Companion software from http://www.sonymobile.com/gb/tools/pc-companion/
and install it on your PC.
    2. Install and open PC Companion then select Support Zone.
    3. Phone Software Update.
    4. Start.
    5. Repair Phone
    6. Continue
    7. Accept data removal
    8. Next
    9. Wait for prepare
    10. Select Phone
    11. Follow the connection steps
