Bad Performance with NI-VISA and NI-488.2 under Win XP

I have an application (originally developed under LW/CVI 5.5.1), that use VISA for both, GPIB and serial communication. The application runs fine under NT 4.0 but under XP there are delays in conjunction with serial communication, which slow down the whole application. I already compiled the application with LW/CVI 6.0, installed NI-VISA V. 2.6.0 and NI-488.2 V. 2.0 but this didn't change anything. Do you have any ideas?

Hello Michael,
We have noticed the reduction in system performance in Windows XP when multiple ports are installed, and large packets are being read/written at high baud rates (460.8k). Performance is acceptable when using smaller packet sizes or slower baud rates (115.2k for example). It appeared to be a bug in XP, because the problem was fixed when a prerelease version of XP service pack 1 was installed.

I have 2 apple id's with different apps and data saved under each. It's very annoying so now I want to create a new id with my primary email address I use now. If I do that is there any way to transfer all my saved apps and app data like game saves etc so I don't lose all of that information and can easily switch to a singular apple id?

Apple does not transfer content bought with one Apple ID to another Apple ID. Apple will not merge two Apple IDs.
If most of your content was bought with the Yahoo! Apple ID but you now want the Gmail address for your Apple ID, the trick will be to change the address used for the Yahoo ID with the Gmail address. However, to do that you must first free the Gmail address from that other Apple ID. Use the instructions from Apple to substitute another address that is not used as an Apple ID for your Gmail address in the Apple ID with the Gmail address. Then, when the Gmail address is no longer used in an Apple ID, you can use the same instructions to substitute the Gmail address for the Yahoo address in the Apple ID with the Yahoo address.

• Use buffering and psp with datasocket-VIs and without any binding and shared variable node

Hello,
I'm using LV 8.5.
I'm trying to develop a multiplatform (windows and mac os x) and multi-computer application. II want to get executables running on each device, communicating through the network. Communication process includes datas (such as images) and events messages (something like "Hello, I got an error" or "youyou, my work is done" or "I'm hereeeee!!!!...."). I do need a communication without any loss of data.
I worked a lot and wanted to test a psp-based design, without any binding nor shared variable node (mac os...) using data socket VIs and SVE buffering.
I managed to :
- deploy shared variable library dynamically (even in an executable)
- communicate between two PCs with datasocket VIs
However, I never managed to enjoy buffering (even locally with one VI doing the deployment and writing datas and another one for reading).
I worked hard (dynamic buffering setting, dynamic buffering watching like in http://zone.ni.com/reference/en-XX/help/371361D-01/lvconcepts/buffering_data/ and in the example "DS send image" and "DS receive image" in the labview examples, trying to use "?sync=true" in the URL, etc...) but no way to get things work.
I attached a jpeg of an example of receiver and sender. I use wait commands in both receiver and sender to test buffering
Receiver do receive datas (the last written) but buffering doesn't work.
Did somebody did that before ? (better than me...)
Thanks

Hello,
Indeed my problem has been solved. My error : in the While loop of the receiver VI, I always reactualize the PacketsMaxBuffer and OctetsMawBuffer parameters, what resets the buffer and make it appears ineffective.
I now set the PacketsMaxBuffer and OctetsMawBuffer values only once at the begining of the VI and the psp buffering works perfectly.
Sorry for the desagreement...

• Bus Error when accessing A24 space on a VME device with VXI-VISA and VME-MXI-2

I am trying to access A248 register space on a VME card, but I get a bus error using viIn8 and viOut8 with VXI-VISA on a VXI controller running Win2k across a VXI-MXI-2 <-> VME-MXI-2 link.
I found the following entry on your site, but I do not if or how it applies to my situation:
I Cannot Access A24 Space on a VME Bus with a VME-MXI and an AT-MXI-1 on a Windows NT System.
Product Group: VXI Software
Product Name: NI-VXI for AT-MXI for Windows NT
Version/Revision: 1.0
Problem: With a VME device, bus errors were received when trying to do a VXIin or VXIout to the address in A24 space. The device was successfully edited within the non-VXI device editor portion of VXIedit. Resma
n acknowledges that the device has a base address of x0000 and has requested 4 MBytes of space in A24 space, but the bus errors were still received.
Solution: Use VXIedit to insert x4700 into registers A, C, E and 10 of the the VME-MXI. This allows the entire range of VME address spaces (A16, A24 and A32) to be mapped to the MXI bus. You can then access A24 Space.

Hi bnemmers,
Thank you for contacting National Instruments. First, let me address the KnowledgeBase that you referenced. That KnowledgeBase applies to the VXI-MXI, not the VXI-MXI-2. A similar solution may help, but I will explain that solution last.
You said that you could not access A24 space on you instrument. Do you have problems accessing A24 space on this particular instrument or on all of your instruments? If you can not access A24 space at all, then there could be a problem with your MXI-2 controller or with its configuration.
If it is a single instrument that is causing problems, then I suspect there is a problem either with that particular instrument or with the configuration of that particular instrument. If possible, I suggest you test another working instrument in this system. I also suggest you test this instrument in another system that you know is working.
You mentioned that you are using a VME instrument. If this is the case, then I want to make sure that you have the VME instrument properly configured in Measurement and Automation Explorer. When you add a VME instrument using the "Create new VME Device" option in Measurement and Automation Explorer, you must make sure to add A24 space as a resource in order to communicate in A24 space. When you add this resource, make sure that you select an appropriate range.
As I mentioned above, it is possible that the MXI-2 interface is not configured properly. It is possible that A24 access is not configured properly and that your device is never even seeing a request to read or write a register. There is a register on the MXI-2 that controls A24 access. This register is called VWR2, Extender A24 Window, and is located at 0xE of the MXI-2's A24/A32 address space. You can read this register using viIn16. If you are using A24 space, then bit 14 should be set to 1 to enable A24 address mapping. Bits 10-8 control the size of the A24 window that is mapped, and bits 7-0 control the base of the A24 window. To make sure that A24 space is enabled and mapped, try writing 0x7800 to this register using viOut16. Assuming that you have opened a VISA session to your VXI-MXI-2 or VME-MXI-2, you would use viOut16(visa session, A24, 0xE, 0x7800). Some of this is explained in the VME-MXI-2 User Manual available at http://digital.ni.com/manuals.nsf/webAdvsearch/68409BFF568BB6118625665F005A0A41?OpenDocument&vid=niwc&node=132100_US.
I hope this helps. If you are still encountering problems, I suggest you call and talk to an Applications Engineer. Please generate a phone support request at http://www.ni.com/ask. When you do that, you will be given a Service Request Number and a phone number to call. When you call that phone number, you will be routed directly to an Applications Engineer.

• Hi, I have a directory with many VIs and I would like to transform it as a llb.

I have no problem to do it in development work but Labview returns me an error in EXE mode
Thanks.

After changing a directory to an LLB, you have to open the original program and make sure that it finds all of the subVIs. Then save all (this will save the new location to find everything in). After that, try creating the EXE file. There should be no problem.

• HT204406 Problem with iTunes Match and songs purchased under an old ID

I have songs purchased thru iTunes in 2007 under an old and no longer used ID. They all appear in the list of purchased music but will not match and appear as DRM files on my Mac (hence the error). How do I get this resolved?

What do I need to do to authorize my new computer to play these songs with my current ID?
Marla,
You can't. The old songs are associated with the ID under which they were originally purchased, and there is no way to change it.
You will have to authorize your computer for both the old and new IDs.

• How would one communicate with a custom I/O card under Win 2000 and Labview?

Hypothetically speaking, if I were to develop a custom prototyping PCI card interface using addresses 300 to 303, what would be involved in getting LabVIEW to communicate with this prototyping card? What issues may be important in the development of the prototype card itself?

Hi Robert,
NI-VISA offers you the ability access the hardware directly.
Issues?
Speed, I believe this is not the fastest way to get at the registers.
Determinism, if your device will require the CPU get back to it on a regular basis, Windows could get in the way.
Just the thoughts that come to mind. I hope this helps,

• MacBook 2008 or 2009(?) stuck on grey boot screen with Apple logo and rotating gear under it.

See now, the real problem is that I can't even try Disk Utility because I don't have the original disks seeing as I bought this MacBook off of Amazon. I tried Safe Mode, Single User Mode, & resetting the PRAM. Basically everything I can do without the original disks. How do I do this?! Please help for I'm desperate.

Sounds like you've already read this Apple note. No bootable external backup hard drive? You might call Apple support to see if they still have the original OS X disks for your system, or you can buy OS X 10.6 from the online Apple for $20, which would be an upgrade, assuming you have at least 1GB of memory. Otherwise, take it into an Apple store for assistance.

• Arch 64bit and 32bit games under wine

Hi there,
I am using an x86_64bit version of arch linux and have tried to use Civilization IV and Warcraft III with wine. But i have no usable Framerates. I have tried a lot of issues from Google Searches and from this forum but i cannot handle this problem. My first idea was, that my drivers are not installed correctly. But programs like glxinfo and glxgears says that there is hardware rendering enabled and compiz also works fine. After some researches today i think to have a new idea for my problem.
First i need to say, that i have an Thinkpad T400 with onborad graphics Intel HD4500 or so on. On Ubuntu with wine there were no problems in using Civ IV and Warcraft III, but under Arch Linux i cannot get it to work correctly. The Ubuntu was also an 64bit version.
Is it possible that wine need 32bit libaries for the graphics driver because of the 32bit games? I have only installed the normal pacman packages for my system, which only compile the drivers for 64bit. If this can fix fix the problem. How can I install 32bit and 64 bit drivers on one system?
I am relativly new to Arch Linux, so pls tell me the right commands if you need mor informations. And thank you for your issues.

This is almost definitely the problem. First, add the new [multilib] repo (see the news page for how to do this). Then run pacman -Syu lib32-intel-dri (assuming you are using the 64-bit intel-dri. otherwise you may have to build something from the AUR).

• Visa: lack of privileges under WIN XP, Error: 42, Constant0042, VI_ERROR_INV_CONTEXT, 0xBFFF002A

Hello,
do someone know how to work with VISA devices as an
"normal user" (no administrative rights).
My software works fine with administrative rights under
Windows XP. But with "normal rights" the VI "VISA Find Resource"
finds no (zero - nada - nischt) device.
The error code is "42", the file "visainfo.ini" (LabView6.0.1),
tells me, that this is the error flag: VI_ERROR_INV_CONTEXT.
Do someone know how to set the rights properly, so that a normal
user can run my application?
For the people with LabView < v7.0 I publish here a screen shot
of my code to find the local devices.
Please can me tell someone how to set the rights for VISA instruments
like COM-Ports?

thank you very much for the link!
This knowledge base article is not easy to find,
I failed to find it myself, perhaps you can add
the error-message, that you receive,
when you get in trouble with visa-ports
as normal user.

• Mouse and keyboard freeze under Win 7 Pro Bootcamp on 10.9.1

People,
This is an interesting (if frustrating) issue. I have previously had Windows 7 Pro running wonderfully under ML 10.8.x and I removed the partition when I had no further use for it. Last night I decided to re-install. I am using the wired Apple keyboard and a wired USB Microsoft mouse. I used Bootcamp Assistant as before to create a USB installation while downloading the latest Bootcamp software from Apple.
Windows 7 Pro installs fine, and then reboots. The first time I get to the low resolution Windows desktop everything is also OK. I then install the Bootcamp drivers, allow the installation to complete and reboot.
At this point Windows boots to desktop in appropriate iMac resolution...except the keyboard and mouse do not function. It may well be a USB port issue, as swapping another keyboard and mouse a) doesn't help or b) make the distinctive 'USB device connected' sound.
I may download an older version of the bootcamp drivers and try again.
Anyone have any thoughts?
Regards,
Steve
PS: I'm using the followig hardware
27" iMac - 3.4Ghz i7 - Late 2012
32GB RAM
1TB Fusion
2GB GTX 680MX

I was able to dowload the support software and paste it over the old support software in the USB Winstall that Bootcamp created before, however the same issue is persisting after I get to the screen to set up windows. I get no response from the mouse and the keyboard. Any suggestions?
I'm using a iMac 27in (2013), a wired apple keyboard, and a Logitech wireless mouse.

• Whats the difference between VISA and GPIB?

The reason i am asking this question stems from a problem i am having.
I am using an MXA N9020A to aquire Burst Power measurements and i'm using labview to automate and issue the commands. If i connect to the device using VISA (which is how i pretty much have connected to other devices) and i issue a command :INIT:TXP it will start the burst power and then freeze the measurement disallowing me from changing channels to measure other channels' burst power. If i use the GPIB VI instead it will not do this and I am capable of channel hopping to measure other channel powers. I really dont have a reason to use VISA other than to keep it uniform with everything else in the application but why is this?

Hi Brent,
Thank you for your quick response. This should not be happening, as the VISA VIs merely make calls to the NI-488.2 DLLs. Which version of NI-VISA and NI-488.2 are you using? Could you also attach both of your VIs (the 488.2 one that works and the NI-VISA one that doesn't)? Also please perform one NI-Spy capture for each VI, and attach the two resulting screen shots. If you need assistance performing the NI-Spy capture, you can find more details here.
