Bad Preference Panes again...

Seems like another preference issue...
After updating to Mavericks 10.9.1, I get this when opening the Mail, Contacts, and Calendars pane:
From what I understand, all new Macs are Intel based? Unless there's some strange new chipset I haven't heard of.
And yes, I tried opening System Preferences in both 32 bit and 64 bit mode. Opening it in 32 bit mode causes it to quit and reopen in 64 bit mode.

Thanks!
I sure wish that an automated process for "remapping the path" was available, either via the web site, the In-Home Agent, or the STB menu itself!  It would sure save alot of frustration in the customer base!

  • ICloud preference pane won't launch

    The skinny:
MacBook Air (circa 2011) running OS X 10.7.5 – can not get iCloud preference pane to launch; results in endless spinning beach ball and eventual forced quit. Also notice that Mail preferences hangs (this, after trying to access the Accounts tab). Both System Pref. and Mail will launch and run after forced quit, but will again hang.
Everything seems to function o.k., but I notice that my iCal events are not syncing to iPhone, iPad, or other laptop (MacBook Pro running 10.8). Haven't changed settings on MacBook Air.
    Any leads welcome!

One thought that I have is that you need to repair your "login Keychain" using the Keychain Access application (/Applications/Utilities/Keychain Access).
If you don't know, the Mac "Keychain" is responsible for securely storing all sorts of credentials and passwords for you such as your iCloud login, Mail accounts, and WiFi passwords to name a few.  It does this behind the scenes on your behalf so that you don't need to reenter your passwords ever time you open Mail for example.  If, for some reason your login keychain becomes corrupted, then connections and logins to all sorts of things stop working.
Apple provides an easy way to check your keychain for corruption and repair it if necessary.  It's called Keychain First Aid.  Try this:
Open "Applications "> "Utilities" > "Keychain Access"
Click the "Keychain Access" menu > "Keychain First Aid"
    Type in your password
    Select the "Repair" toggle option
    Click the "Start" button
When it's done, note the result.  If it ends with:  "No problems found ... Verification completed" then it didn't find any problems.  If is says otherwise, then post back here.  If is says that it repaired anything, then try the preference panes again and see if there is any improvement.

  • Installation of Preferences Pane on remote Server OSX fails

On an OSXServer mini which I connect to with RDC, I am unable to install any Preference Pane programs such as Slink or Squeeze.
    I have full admin access to that machine, it's a dedicated database server, nothing exotic running on it, latest OS10.6.4, but I get the message;
"You can't open the xxx Preferences Pane because it is not available to you at this time. To see this preference pane, you may need to connect a device to your computer."
There is no mouse or screen connected to this mini, RDC access only.
The PrefPane icons become visible but remain greyed out.
Remote Management is activated in the ServerAdmin.
A very similar configuration hosted elsewhere gives no problem. Same settings, same RDC access, same OS.
At this point I'm at a loss. Clues anyone?
    TIA,
    Peter

The problem isn't the filesystem per se. It's bad software quality if pathnames defined wrong or multiple times with different notation. Often there is only one or two letters with the wrong upper or lower case. I guess in the current Flash installer this is the case. With the previous versions I had no problems.

My Mini isn't case sensitive, so I can't really say but I had two iMacs when I worked at Intuit that were case sensitive and they had all kinds of software installation issues. One of the Mac developers at Mountain View told me that Case Sesnitive shouldn't be chosen as a format except when a system is isolated and used as a testing server. For a workstation or home computer, it's a terrible choice for a setup.

  • Sharing Preference pane "Cannot Open" error?

    Hi all,
Im running Tiger 10.4.6 on a MacBook Pro 2.0, connecting to the Internet through an ADSL router via an Airport Express base station, everything fully updated.
Suddenly, when trying to open the "Sharing" preference-pane, I get this error:
    Preferences Error
You cannot open Sharing preferences pane on this
computer. Contact the developer of this software
    for a newer version.
I haven't installed or updated anything in the last few days, and it worked earlier today.
I have tried restarting, and deleted the following preferences, to no avail:
    com.apple.sharing.firewall.plist
    com.apple.networkConfig.plist
    Any ideas?
    TIA,
    Thomas
    MacBook Pro 2.0 / 2Gig RAM / 100gb, 7200 rpm   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Hello again, and thank you for your replies, and sorry for the late response.
First off; I have installed the latest 10.4.7 Combo Updater, but that did not install a new SharingPref.prefPane. I even removed the old one, before running the freshly downloaded Combo installer.
Actually, I did the exact same thing a week ago - same result.
So, in the meantime I had some work I needed to finish, so I didn't have time to investigate further, until this morning. Where I, much to my surprise, found the SharingPref.prefPane back in /Macintosh HD/System/Library/PreferencePanes/ and it was still the wrong version!
So "something" must be installing the wrong - old - SharingPref.prefPane. Well, I took a peek at my install log, searched for "sharing", and lo and
    behold!
The mystery is - somewhat - solved. The old SharingPref.prefPane comes from and old Apple Remote Desktop 2.2 installer, that contains an installer called PantherSharing.pkg. See search from Console.app below.
What puzzles me, is the fact that I installed the wrong (old 2.2) version of ARD, to monitor a couple of servers, and of course uninstalled that version, and installed 3.0, the minute I realized my error.
How can that old installer keep "updating" my system, even after I've removed the old ARD? It's as if something is running the receipt, witch I funny enough, can't find on my system anymore.
The dates don't match either, or they do, but I would expect more entries from last week, where I removed the old SharingPref.prefPane and it mystically appeared again this morning.
The receipt must have run in the last week, but I can't find anything in my logs - install.log.0.gz OR install.log.
Maybe running a reciept dosen't get logged?
Ohh well Anyway - beneath is a copy of my log, and the question now is; How do I get the correct Pref-pane, when the Combo Installer doesn't install it?
Thanks for your help everybody, and shawnhm, thanks for Sharing my Pane ... Thank you, Thank you, I'm here all week

  • Preference pane problem after installing Tiger

    Hi
I made a mistake: I put this post on another forum (iTunes !) so I start again here and edit it.
sorry for this lengthy post !
    Hello
I upgraded 2 days ago to Tiger via Erase and Install. I was very nervous but I had no problem with the upgrade itself. The Set up assistant brought back my files from my back up on FWdrive and everything seems to be fine. I followed the "take control of upgrading to Tiger" step by step. I have not yet restored missing files as it is advised but I really don't know what to restore !
When I went through the Preference system, the panes all worked fine except the "desk and screen saver" pane, which behaves strangely: it opens and immediately crashes. A dialogue appears with 3 choices: "close/report or open again" (in this order). I choose "open again" and the same happens when I select the "desk and screen saver".
But, this time, another dialogue appears with "close/ retry/report" (in this order). I choose "retry" this time and the whole Preference system reappears… in japanese !
I live in Japan but I am french so my system is in french. Now, with the Pref Sys in japanese it works when I click on the desk and sreen saver pane, but I don't have anymore my selection of pictures for the desk (of course I can get them back from my pictures). When I close it I get a message (in english): "new settings have been created for this application. Do you wish to use these settings from now on ? "
choice is: use new settings / use original settings.
I tried both. But this pane crashes again after I open it (in french and not in japanese) from the Apple menu or the icon on the side as usual.
It is not a life threatening situation but it is bothering if I have to go through the whole circus each time I want to change the picture of my desk !
    other anomalies:
the Iphoto and iMovie applications do the same.
the Quick Time Player does not open at all.
the iTunes app tells me that the files cannot be read because they were created with a later version of iTunes (the install DVD of Tiger is for Tiger 10.4.6 and the iTunes version is 6.0.4. But I had updated my iTunes while I was using OSX 10.3.9 and I have the 7.6 version on my back up). I guess updating the OS will be enough to fix this ?!
last thing (but not the least): when I want to add an URL to my favorites the favorites window doesn't open. "Show all the favorites" and "add a new file" work though.Do I need another kind of manipulation with Tiger ?!
I have been through all the applications, including in the Utilities folder and they are the only ones that don't work.
I'm considering downgrading and performing a simple upgrade (but in that case, I might again have trouble with iTunes, no?)
tell me if my conclusions are right:
during the upgrading, somehow some files necessary for some applications were not transfered and when I want to open these apps the computer goes back to the original language when I first bought it (japanese).
I could still use them in japanese but it is not very confortable for me and I really would like to have the french or english version of the same app !
I hope someone will shed some light on this !
    thanks
    parupano

    ok. One by one:
1- i'll try re-installing iPhoto and iMovie. But you did not tell me if it was enough to just bring the application to the trash or if I had to look somewhere else…
2- QT: there is no pkg in the /Library/receipts !
but there are many QT "things":
    QTPlayer app in /applications/QTPlayer app.
QTUpdater in /system/library/QT (together with many components)
    QTPlayer in /applications(mac OS 09) /QT/QTPlayer
    QTUpdater in /applications(mac OS 09)/QT/QTUpdater
    _in japanese:_
    QTtm settings in /system folder/control panel/QTtmsetting (classic)
    QTExtension in /system folder/extension/QTextension
    3 - I looked in /System/library/PreferencePanes and there are 2 aliases:
    ScreenSaver.prefPane: type: alias 4KB
    Internet.prefPane type: alias
but DesktopScrennEffectsPref.pefPane is like all the other panes: type: Mac OSX preferences panel
does "alias" means that they are not really there ? what should I do ?
4 - no Safari extension or helper. QT is indicated for the Preference Pane, so you were right.
well, what do you make of all this ?
for me, one thing is sure: I'm learning a lot about computer !
thanks again for your time, I'm waiting for your answer.

  • How can I delete old (non-active) email accounts that don't show in the Accounts Preferences pane?

Since I (reluctantly) abandoned MobileMe and switched to iCloud, when I use Mail Connection Doctor because a problem is indicated with one or more of my email acocunts, it shows both iCloud IMAP and Me.com SMTP accounts. The iCloud account is fine but the SMTP acount has a red button against it.
So Connection Doctor shows the old SMTP account always failing to connect (of course - as it's been abandoned). However, this account does not show up in the Accounts Preferences pane so I am not able to delete it. This also happens with another account which I deleted in the Preferences pane some time ago.
How can I stop these phantom accounts appearing in Connection Doctor? It's very irritating to constantly have faults indicated which apply to abandoned accounts.
    Thanks people!

Go to your iCloud account in Preferences>Accounts. Set the 'Outgoing mail server (SMTP)' drop-down menu to 'Edit SMTP server list'. Then:
Set the server name as shown here. Then click the Advanced tab and check the settings.
If you are still having problems, you could start the setup again from scratch. Assuming that your signature is correct and you are running Leopard, delete any iCloud or MobileMe accounts in the list and then follow the instructions here:
Entering iCloud email settings manually in Snow Leopard or Leopard

  • TS4404 Most of the options in preference panes in OS 10.9 can no longer be set by administrators

I'm sure I'm not the only person with this problem.  I am running Mavericks on a 21" iMac Early 2008.  I have applied all updates.  When I try to change preferences on almost all of the preference panes it can't be done.  I click on the button and nothing happens.  Not sure what log file to look in and my searches have not even come close to finding a solution on this site.
For instance I can open the preference pane for network settings, unlock the settings but when I click on advanced nothing happens.  If I try to connect to a different network nothing happens.  Another example:  If I change the default browser in Safari or any other browser (again all updated) it always goes back to the setting that it had when I logged in.  It will let me select other browsers and then close the preferences for the browser but when I launch a web address it launches the browser that was set at login.
I found one article about loggin in safe mode twice might help.  No effect cleared all caches with OnyX still no effect on System Preferences.  System did crash recently did a shutdown via remote shell login (SSH) and ran "shutdown -r now" command from terminal on my phone.  I don't know if this was the cause as it wasn't noticed until sometime later.

Thanks for the idea. I followed the advice in your link and after figuring out to add a user using terminal I was able to do it.  Part of the problem was the users and groups did not work to add or modify users.  The new user worked fine. I still couldn't find anything wrong with my preferences in any of the usual places. So I backup up my data. deleted my user account and created a new account for me then restore all my data.  To try to stay on the safe side I no longer give myself admin privileges but use the new account for that.  Hopefully this will keep it less likely from occuring again.
    Thanks again for your help

  • Preferences pane and Mail crash when I access accounts in Mavericks

Mail won't work on my iMac all of a sudden. Initially it just failed to launch and had to be force quit. I managed to reset Mail and it launches but doesn't do anything - no accounts showing up. (Before this happened, smart mailboxes stopped working).
If I try to delete my iCloud accounts the preferences pane freezes when I click on iCloud (and, bizarrely, my bluetooth keyboard stops working - has to be disconnected and reconnected)
Messages also needs to be force quit - so it seems like an iCloud issue.
I'm trying to delete my iCloud account from the iMac to start again, after reading somewhere that this might be the solution, or it was something to do with iCloud keychain.
I restarted my Mac in safe mode, but the problem still occurs: spinning beach ball when I go to the preference pane.
I can access email on my Macbook Air (also running Mavericks) and on iOS devices.
Resetting Mail did not work. Removing extensions did not work.
    Any suggestions gratefully received!

I have a similar problem. Although, for me, Mail doesn't crash. I have two email accounts; Yahoo and Gmail. My experience is that Mail will pick up my new emails from Gmail, but not Yahoo.

  • Unable to access options in Preference panes

In the General tab of the Security & Privacy pane I am unable to open any of the options after unlocking.
Also in the iCloud preference pane I can't add Safari or Keychain (selection box and name greyed out), Account Details doesn't open either.
This is on a late 2007 mbp after upgrading to Mavericks.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance
    M

    Try deleting the com.apple.systempreferences.plist.
You need to look in your user Library/Preferences for the .plist. Either hold down the option key while using the Finder “Go To Folder” command and select your user Library in your home folder or use the Finder “Go To Folder” command and enter ~/Library/Preferences.  Move the .plist to your desktop.
Open test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If tthe same, return the .plist(s) to where you got them from, overwriting the newer ones.
If you prefer to make your User library permanently visible, use the Terminal command found below.
    Show User Library
You might want to bookmark the command. I have to use it again after every update. I have also been informed that if you drag the user library to Finder it will remain visible.

  • Built-In Ethernet Port Doesn't Show Up In The Network Preference Pane

My ethernet port no longer shows up in the Network preferences pane under Network Status. The status Airport and the Internal Modem are still displayed though. Plugging in an ethernet cable causes my machine to crash; sometimes I get a message that I need to hold down the power button to reboot, and other times command line-like text is displayed on top of whatever was on screen.
The only change I've made to my system since last using a wired connection was installing Security Update 2006-001 on March 1st and OS X Update 10.4.5 on February 14th. After running the 10.4.5 updater, my machine initially refused to reboot. On the first attempt, it played the start up chime, but the screen remained black. The second time, the Apple logo appeared, but the spinning pinwheel never did. The third attempt was successful and my system appeared to be functioning normally.
How do I get my ethernet port to work again?

Does "Built-in Ethernet" show up as a choice in the 'Show:" popup? If so, is it configured as you would expect? For instance, if "TCP/IP" is set to use DHCP, do you have an IP address, subnet mask, etc.? There is an "off" setting for TCP/IP; make sure that hasn't been selected somehow.
There is also an "Assist Me" button that will let you launch the diagnostics app. Does this also crash the Mac? If not, what are the results of its tests?
Also, you may want to do a permissions repair with Disk Utility if you haven't done this since applying the updates.
If you still get crashes, there may be a conflict with a log-in item, particularly if you have any third party ones. (Check that in the "Accounts" pref.) One way to diagnose things like that is by creating a new test account & logging into it. If the problems go away, you can assume a user cache, .plist, or login item is the problem.
If none of this turns up anything, you may need to reinstall the OS. Short of that, you can try downloading the 10.4.5 combo update & running it. It replaces more components than the "delta" update so it just might do the trick. Besides, if you end up having to reinstall the OS, having the combo version handy will save you the time of downloading & installing any incremental updates to get back to 10.4.5.
As always, backup all important files before applying any updates.
    Good luck!

  • Double-Click speed with new TrackPad preference pane

I have an original white MacBook. Ever since I updated to 10.5.6 with the new Trackpad preference Pane no matter where I set the Double-click speed setting (everywhere from slow to fast) I constantly get a double click event even when I single click the track pad. Prior to 10.5.6 the trackpad worked perfectly. Has anyone else noticed different behavior since the update? Any solution to getting the correct double-click speed to stick?

I've got a similar problem, but in the opposite direction.
After the 10.5.6 update, my double click speed sticks to slow.
I can change it and make it faster, but after every boot, it starts up with a slow speed again.
I'm on a Early 2008 Macbook Pro (first multitouch, last non unibody)

  • Network Preferences pane gone mad

    Hi All,
After I ran an ISP supplied software CD my Network Preferences pane just went mad. Every time I open the pane immediately a window drops down carrying the message
"Your Network Settings has been changed by another application"
I click "OK' but a fraction of second later the same message drops down again. Click "OK" and the sequence repeats again; and again; and again.
In effect this prevents me from changing any Network settings manually (when the message is shown everything is blanked out)
Unfortunately I forgot to run uninstall before cancelling the service and returning the software CD to the ISP. Now I have trouble getting any information what files might have been installed.
Any ideas where to look for and that files to delete to get rid of the issue???
    Thank you in advance.

My screen resolution changed during game play. Now that the game is off, I cant change it back. This is what the error message says "Preferences Error - Could not load Displays preference pane."

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Preference Pane with question mark on it

When I click on the preference pane in my dock, it does nothing. Also, there is a question mark on it. I just installed Leopard and everything else (except for my airport express) seems to be fine. What can I do to repair my pref pane?
    Thanks!

    Hey, dude.
Well, the first step is to find out if you have really deleted those items or if you've just placed them somewhere else. Spotlight will let you know that. Search for the 3 items, if you manage to find them somewhere around your HD, just drag them back to your application folder. If you don't find them, you'll probably have to install your OS again since I don't think Prefs. panel, Spaces and TM are softs that can be found or downloaded individually.
Your last chance would be using a software called Pacifist ( http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/12743 ) that extracts individual apps. from OS X install DVDs. I've used it to re-install Safari in the past but I really don't know if it will work with this 3 things.
    I think it's worth a try.
Give us some feedback on how you doing and maybe we can figure out some other stuff.
    C ya.

  • User Preference Panes dimmed, unable to access...

I am "in charge" of our network which consists of 10 PowerMac G5s, an XServe and XRAID. We are currently running 10.4.6 throughout.
We are adding some WACOM tablets to a couple stations, but I have been unable to access the WACOM preference pane in the system preferences. The WACOM software creates a new row below the "System" row, and adds it's preference pane. When logged in as a user this pane is visible, but dimmed out. When I log in as root the preference becomes available, and I am able to tune the tablet.
I have used the latest driver, and have installed / uninstalled a few times. I have installed as root, and as a user with identical results as above.
The Workgroup Manager has NOT been configured to manage user preferences; there are three options that I see, "Never", "Once", and "Always"- "Never" is selected.
I am looking for a way to make the WACOM pane available to the user. Any thoughts?
    Thanks!

Tried Repairing Permissions on the machine after installation?
I would have thought that installing as Root would be a bad idea (might cause permissions problems). An 'admin' user should be sufficient. Do 'plain' users have any restrictions set on them in their Accounts preferences?
It doesn't sound like it has anything to do with the server though, (if you are not using managed preferences). If you get no joy here (server forum) you might want to try the genera Tiger forum area.
