BAD problem - photoshop getting worse

i make GUIs for software synthesizers and it is CRITICAL that i have pixel-per-pixel performance.
i have used photoshop for over a decade. granted, i am not erudite on colour or display settings, still, this blows me:
for about the last year, i will occasionally open a project in photoshop elements 3, which i am using now, and discover that it blurs pixels, especially on transparent layers with shades of gray (which is what i generally work in). this is absolutely not tolerable
then, other times, i will open a project and it will look fine.
now, all of a sudden, it's doing it really really badly.
i took these screenshots with ms PAINT.
http://www.xoxos.net/temp/psbug/bug.bmp
in this bmp, correct rendering is juxtaposed with incorrect rendering. there is a zoom of two black pixels kitty corner. this should be black and white squares. you can see that it interpolates gray at some level.
and, as i said, i don't know why. it just started doing this all of a sudden. perhaps some other program changed my display settings? i'm using windows xp, i've been using this edition of pse 3 for ooh four years now???
i took those screenshots a few days ago.
today, i took this:
http://www.xoxos.net/temp/psbug/good.bmp
this is what it looks like on the screen and in paint.
http://www.xoxos.net/temp/psbug/bad.bmp
this is what it looks like in adobe photoshop elements 3.0 today. maybe if i restart my computer it will look differently.
that is disasterous.
again, i use this software professionally, and when designing GUIS for software synthesizers it is utterly critical that each pixel is rendered correctly, because many of the elements on guis are 1 pixel width lines. i hope everyone woerking in graphics apps appreciates that we don't want antialiasing, users want wysiwyg.
please provide some insight into what is occuring.. whether my colour settings have fritzed, if i should reinstall the software, if my monitor is suddenly allergic to photoshop, et c.
this cannot continue like this. i will try to attach the images if this forum allows me. *edit* it's not letting me upload bmps, even though they are under 2mb :/
thank you

i uninstalled and reinstalled pse3.0 and the error still occurs.
note that every other image viewer i have (windows image viewer, paint) displays the image correctly.
after reinstalling photoshop elements, my preferences were still present, ie. recently edited images, so now i'll try it again with nuking my registry while it's uninstalled.
NO format should use anything BUT wysiwyg :/
*edit* (edit #1.. edit #2 follows..)  this may help someone diagnose the error:
in the top bar of the image window it displays:
myimage.psd @ 100% (MOD 1 2 3,      RGB/8)
i presume this means i am stuck in 8 bit colour!
i have tried edit > preferences and the available colour preferences only make the image worse.
what mode should i be in to be in 32 bit colour when i edit images? i don't know how these settings got changed (and am only presuming that this is the issue)
*edit #2*
i created a new image and selected 'rgb colour' as the option, which displays painted pixels correctly. it does not display images fromthe clipboard correctly, so i am still in the dark about what the error is.
i don't really care about image settings. i want each pixel to display the colour it is and not the colour of the pixels next to it. something is wrong.
*edit #3*
if i copy the image to a new file, select the green, and then use the pencil tool to draw 1 pixel blocks on the black background, it comes out the same cacky antialiased crap, dark green in some places instead of the same green shade.
if i do this in PAINT it works properly.
PLEASE do not tell me that i have to use paint, and that paint is better than photoshop. i want it to work the way it used to
so obviously somewhere that i can't seem to access, my adobe display palette is screwed up. please tell me how do i set it back.
i am quite confident with navigating and making changes to the registry if you can identify registry settings that are suspect

okay.. apparently my monitor (it's a laptop with the same resolution pixels as every laptop i've seen except those tiny notebooks manufactured in the last 10 years) is 96 dpi
whereas photoshop is working at 72 dpi??
so.. i created a new image at 96 dpi, copied and pasted the crappy image..
..and i'm getting the bahaviour i've bene getting eith other files in the past few months:
it draws the pixels correctly sometimes, then if you drag the layer, or resize the image, or change just about anything where it's forced to redraw the screen, it will muck it up 50% of the time...
look: it's a simple thing: draw the pixels for my hardware. how do i make photoshop do this again?? *nonplussed*
*edit 19835461905606*
okay... so i've experimented with creating new files with different dpis to see what it's going to do.. i tried 96.. this looked okay half of the time.. if i dragged the image it screwed up. if anythnig changed it screwed up, like it's moireing the image..
so i thought if i tried experimenting i could see if my system will respond to some mysterious correct value, as 72 or 96 don't cut it.
so.. now, whenever i select > new image,
it defaults to 72.009 dpi!!!!!
wtf is that???!!!!!
obviously, something has screwed up my dpi settings, ads it's clearly a moire effect... sometimes bands of the image (vertical horizontal) are worse than other parts, eg. in the 'bad' bmp, the botton half is screwed up and the top half isn't.

This is the third time you have asked this question in two days.  I can't say if the problem will get worse, but it probably wont get any better.  You'll have to wait until you get access to money in order to get it repaired or to buy a new mac.

I have continuous problems with my iPad Mini, and it is getting worse!  Newstand application keep pausing or crashing, websites keep hanging first time in but then open fine the second time, and I have problems with applictions crashing.  Has anyone experienced similar problems and any suggestions?

Has the device always behaved this way? Did this start as a result of an update to the iOS software? If the problem is that bad, you should probably restore the iOS software and then restore from a backup. If that fails, restore as new and rebuild the device. If that fails, it's time for a trip to an Apple Store to let them have a look at the iPad.
Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings

  • The screen on my Macbook goes blank, if I tilt the screen it returns. Problem getting worse.

The screen on my Macbook goes blank, if I tilt the screen it returns. Problem getting worse. Should I take it to the apple store and see if they can replace the screen? is it expensive to replace the backlight/invertor?

This sounds to me like a fairly common Inverter Fault.
It is not the screen that needs replacing by the sounds of it,
It sounds like either the inverter board or the inverter cable needs replacing.
My understanding is that inverter / inverter cable repairs aren't too expensive, but not too cheap!
Obviously your best way to find out how much it would cost to be repaired would be to take it in to an Apple Store, as I have never had to have one replaced myself, but the information I'm providing, is based on what I've read elsewhere.
    How old is the MacBook?
    Thanks,
    Ollie.

  • Print head alignment keeps on getting worse and worse the more I try to "fix" it

First off, I know that this question doesn't really belong in the mbp section, but since I am printing from one, I thought this would be the closest match.
I have an Epson NX420 printer which came with my 2011 mbp 13in for free (err... $100 off the original $95ish to be exact). It will turn 3 years old in less than a month.
This past week, I have had troubles printing "good" images, so I did the print head alignment on Epson Printer Utility 4, following the written directions. I printed something out, and it was still disgustingly off, so I repeated the process two more times, each time printing something different. The vertical alignment is fine, but the horizontal alignment seems to get worse and worse. One thin line will be split into two in some places, and one will be dotted while the other solid, and in the case of color, the two bands are different colors. Solids come out grainy.
I don't want to waste any more paper and expensive ink for something that is not fixing itself. Since my mbp is still under Applecare warrenty, will Apple fix or trade my current printer for another one for free, or does Apple have nothing to do with printers other than its sale? If not, are there alternative ways to fix this problem? I am sure I am choosing the box without any bands at all and if there is I choose the lightest band-in-a-box and click realignment.
Here is the recent printout of random lines and text, after three unsuccesful trials of print head alignment.

This is a printer issue and it's only covered under the Epson Warranty Program, which is 1 year.  AppleCare has nothing to do with that.
You'll probably have to replace the printer if the print heads cannot be replaced.  That's the issue when you buy an inkjet that has print heads that aren't part of the ink cartriges... when they go bad, they go bad and you're hosed.  If the issue persists after a print cartridge change, then it's definitely the heads.

  • Video quality gets worse when adding title (DV to DVD)

I've inserted a single DV clip captured from my camcorder, added one title at the begging and shared it with iDVD (08), where I created (and rendered) a DVD from it. At the moment where the title is overlaying the original the picture gets worse. As soon as the title is gone, the video is back to normal. I know this is just bad rendering, but no matter which settings I choose in iDVD the result always looks the same. Any suggestions, or I should just live with it?
P.S. I wanted to use iMovie 08 but the shared video it creates looks just plain bad for the DVD.

    should just live with it?
Yes, this is a known problem for perfectionists like you and me and a few others:

  • Go RED again after PUBLISHED...getting WORSE after updated!!!

    Hi,
Recently i've just updated the iWeb software, but getting worse while working on iWeb now. Sad and Too Bad to me...
Yesterday when i open my iWeb...every Pages from Blue turn to RED and after re-published..still RED.
Not only that problem, i thought some of my pages caused the problem..so i try to create a new SITE and drag all my pages into the New Site and try to Drag and Drop back the Pages 1 by 1 and updating/publishing to check the that where's the problem from...
    But,
I can't even Drag my BLOG page now...however i delete the .plist from the preferences or from the ByHost...FAILED me again!!!!
I'm so disapointed to this so call "updated software" !!!!
What s'ld i do now? Help Help..need help!!!
I'm actually ready to publish my updated Website...
I feel sad that nowaday apple doesn't take care of customer and the Quality anymore..worse and worse from Hardware to software...Too Bad!!!!! sorry for my frustrated words...

Don't feel bad. I have weather widgets and countdown code imbedded in my site via text edit and idisk. So not only does it take forever to upload when I make a change but I have to go back into all the pages with the weather widgets and countdown clocks via text edit and add the code again. Iweb Version 1.1.2. Worked for years and then all of a sudden this. It's not a software problem, but a problem on Apples end communicating back to your computer that the pages have been successfully uploaded and should stay blue leaving only pages with changes to be uploaded next time unless you say different. It has been 6 weeks since Apple told me of this problem and still no solution. I can only wonder how much more trouble is coming when .mac is officially gone. I don't have publish to mobile me in my version 1.1.2 pull down menus, only publish to .mac. I hope a free software update will add these things to my version and take care of this, but I'm not holding my breath. Will they say I need to buy a new version of Iweb. It worked great till they screwed something up on their end. I don't want anythiing more than version 1.1.2 It worked great! It seems to have started when mobile me started running. The two systems maybe are conflicting with each other. Figure it out soon Apple or .mac/mobileme will be something to dump and move to something that works.

  • T420s - experiencing CPU whine that is getting worse

    Hello there!
I have a Lenovn T420s with an i7-2640M CPU @ 2.80 Ghz, Optimus, and 8gb RAM.  I got this laptop as a replacement from Lenovo since they severely damaged my other T420s while trying to repair the bezel.
This laptop is experiencing CPU whine that is getting worse and worse.  There was no CPU whine at all whatsoever when I received this replacement in December, but now it shows up whenever I scroll up and down a browser window, click on a link, or do other normal tasks on the computer.
It happens regardless of if I am on battery or using the AC adapter.  I've also read the other T410/510 page about the CPU whine and saw that the only fix was to get a new motherboard, CPU, and GPU.  I also saw this post: T420s High pitch whine but it doesn't look like it has been updated for a while.
I have a 3 year warranty on this laptop, but I am hesitant to send it in without knowing if a good fix has been found.  I already had a terrible experience with sending the laptop in for service, and had an even worse experience when the tech came on-site to work on it.
Anyone else with this problem?  Has Lenovo come out with a solution?
    Thanks!

    Hi all,
I'm experiencing coil whine or "CPU whine" on my T420s. It's completely intolerable.
Rather than trying to describe this noise, I've put together the start of a sound album documenting it. Please listen: http://soundcloud.com/discostrings/sets/t420s-coil-whine
I suffered through 2.5 years with this problem on my T410. I sent it in once to resolve the problem, but it wasn't fixed. I figured the issue would be resolved in subsequents ThinkPad generations and I'd put up with it until it was time to upgrade.
But the whine on my T420s is much worse. It is impossible for me to use it in a quiet environment. But beyond that, some of the tones and clicking it makes are audible from feet away even in an environment with air conditioners running and people talking. I've tried (and recorded) every important combination of power settings. With all power management turned off in the BIOS and with the CPU limited to its lowest setting, it is ALMOST tolerable (but not quite).
I am willing to do whatever it takes to fix this problem--I do not mind parting with the laptop for a while. I would be happy to send it in for an engineer to look at and fix. I would be happy to take it somewhere. I would be happy to attempt to fix it to my own satisfaction if I am guaranteed it will not void my warranty. If none of those are options, I guess I'll send it in for motherboard replacements until I get a good one. But I'm going to have this fixed. Because this beautifully-engineered machine is impossible for me to use as it is.
As I understand it, coil whine results from faulty or low-quality coils or capacitors on the motherboard that resonate at different power levels. Unless this is from a rare bad batch (which I doubt because of my experience with my T410), this is a result of using bargain-basement coils and capacitors or not adequately testing the units from different suppliers. It's probably the matter of a few dollars or cents in manufacturing the computer. Beyond that, it can often be fixed with a drop of glue.
I put the recording album up to demonstrate that this is an actual problem, and to familiarize those who haven't heard it with the problem. I hope it helps other in diagnosing the coil whine.
Please let me know the best way to proceed to get this fixed. Thanks.

  • Logic Pro 9 is unstable on my system and just keeps getting worse.  Any ideas?

Hello all, so, I've had a Mac Pro, Quad-Core 2.93 GHz Intel Xeon, 16 GB RAM, Mac Pro running Snow Leopard for about 3 years now. I use Logic Pro 9 (Academic Version) and it is really, really unstable. It seems to go through periods of getting worse, but lately it's been unbearable. I am a professional and I find it hard to believe that this software is allowed to have the word "Pro" in the name if it's this unstable for everyone. But, it seems that only some people have the issues I have. Off the top of my head, a few of the main issues are: CPU spiking like crazy (when the Activity Monitor says very little usage by Logic), I know some of the workarounds like making more auxes and splitting up the load, but this is ridiculous. I shouldn't have to work around a professional piece of software just to use it. Sometimes the CPU spikes with one instrument or one audio channel and nothing going on. It's really messed up.Then there's the memory errors when Logic is only using 1GB or RAM, IF THAT. I don't understand this at all, it also can happen in a fully loaded session or with barely anything going on. Then there are the random crashes that make no sense. There's also the part where it does not agree with many LEGIT-OWNED plugins, like Refx Nexus, XFER Nerve, most of the UAD plugins and many more. There's literally a TON more bugs, but these are the big and obvious ones that ruin my workflow. I have not been able to find a real fix for this, from deleting the preferences to reinstalling. I really don't understand it and Logic seems to work much better for other people I know. It also runs much smoother on my really crappy, old laptop. There's nothing wrong with the Mac Pro (other than it's probably self destructing like we all know Apple products do, but this has been a problem since the day I purchased it), it passes all tests and runs perfectly with any other software - from audio/video editing (Cubase, Ableton, Pro Tools, Final Cut, etc. all run like a dream) to video games. So, I really am fed up with this because I've been using Logic for so long that I really don't want to switch to a new DAW. That would slow down my workflow even more than Logic's crashes already do. Someone please help me, if you can.

    Pancenter...
Yes... but I have come across some setups that came with a native SL (and even one Lion!) installation.. that somehow had a corrupted or older Prokit installed for some unknown reason... and given it's a quick fix to try.. I thought I'd mention it..
I frankly don't think it is entirely a Prokit issue itself, but it wouldn't do any harm to try and install v7 just in case it is part of the problem...
    +1 on the UAD stuff....
Also, at the time it crashed... according to the logs...the OP was running Ableton Live at the same time, presumably rewired with Logic... so add all that together with UAD plugins... and that's quite a load on the system...
Finally in thread 32 there is a weird exception msg relating to the Trash2 plugin.. that I haven't seen before...
    Thread 32:

That might be nothing... but as i said, I haven't seen that one before and given what else is going on.. it might be involved too... or nothing to do with that at all!

iPad 1 Safari Crashes Constantly and getting worse day by day.  Has Apple come up with a solution?  Now I am hearing its also happening on the newer models.  My company is about to buy a lot of tablets and I will not recommend Apple anything until they fix the problem.  Granted 30 or 40 iPads is not a huge impact but i promise once the outside world hears about this BS things will change.  There are plenty of other tablets out there that do not have this problem.  At the very least we should have the option of rolling back to a stable IOS...

I have already tried all the things mentioned above as well as other things such as other browsers etc.  Its is obviously a problem with the hardware.  I also borrowed a brand new 4th gen iPad and it does the same thing.  Even after upgrading it to 6.01.  An occasional crash is one thing and can easily be waved off but this is clearly systemic and the problem appears to be related to graphical images and videos.  Both iPads are the 64gb versions, the only difference other than model is the iPad 1 has ATT cellular.  The new version is clean i.e no other APPs loaded other than what came with it.  I have 7 more coming but im seriously considering sending them back in favor of an Android tablet or the MS Surface.

  • My dvd player will not let me change regions, it just quits when i do, now its stuck on region 1. Any thoughts how i can solve this problem or get round it in some way?

My dvd player will not let me change regions, it says i have one more chance to change it, then it just quits when i do, now its stuck on region 1. Any thoughts how i can solve this problem or get round it in some way?

Usually if you have some kind of hardware failure there is some beeping during POST or most motherboards now have LED indicators to produce and error message based on the type of failure
So if its bad memory, not place properly, mismatched, processor not inserted properly, mismatched voltage or voltage connector not present etc it beeps or generates the error id.
Power supplies can be tested for failure. There are some walk throughs for testing just them with a switch, paperclip or a jumper (I'd suggest not doing this if you are not familiar with the dangers of electricity).
Memory can be tested with memory diagnostics programs like Memtest+
Processors can overheat if the proper precautions have not been taken usually you will get a POST beep or error code for that.
If the motherboard has no response then do the basics first:
Check power connectors and power supply. Once you determine that is not the case move on to other items like graphics cards in all the way or memory.

  • Can't Sleep or Shut Down - Getting Worse

I have a new MBP with WinXP Home installed on a separate partition created with Boot Camp 1.2. I use Windows to access a work system, otherwise, I am always in OS 10.4.9.
Everything worked perfectly for about two weeks.
Beginning about a week ago, I noticed that the laptop would sometimes not sleep with the lid closed. The Apple logo would darken, but the pulsing light would not come on. If left in this condition, it would get very, very hot and need a restart by using the power key.
At first this was occasional, but now, if the MBP has been on for more that five minutes it is constant. In addition, I cannot shut down using the Apple Menu. The shutdown progresses to the blue screen, and then freezes.
I have verified the disk, repaired permissions, and reset the PMU. This particular unit is not connected to any peripheral devices by USB or FW, but is on a home network with a printer and an Airport Disk which automounts at startup.
It's not reasonable to have this unit crash every time on sleep or shutdown. The sleep problem is present when booted into Windows XP or MacOS 10.4.9, but I have not yet seen a shutdown failure in Windows.
The fact that this problem is progressive (getting worse) suggests to me that it is a software, not a hardware issue.
    Any thoughts?

    UPDATE
I have corrected the shut down issue, so far. After the usual hoop jumping with Applecare with no success, I re-installed the OS (except this time it was a clean install as opposed a migration from my old system.)
I installed each update individually and tested the shut-down via the apple menu after each install. So far it has worked. I started with the Battery Update and then the 10.4.9 then the security update. Then all the rest. NO More trouble.
I have not reinstalled all my non-apple software. I installed Firefox (which is my browser of choice. Machine still shuts down.) I also used T-Bird but I have not installed it yet.
GDee: If U have T-bird installed or use it try uninstalling it. See if that solves your shut down issue, too.
That was the last major app install I did that I can remember. Just a hunch.

  • Yellow tint! the 3rd Screen of my iMac 27, it's getting worse and worse...

Hi everyone not sure if there is anything more i could do with this, I have a 2010-13 week iMac, it came with a 'bearable' yellow tint problem from the beginning, after a hard drive failure i had to send my iMac back to Apple care, i was hoping the screen problem had been solved so I asked them to replace my screen as well, it came back with a worse panel showed much larger area of yellow tint...
Then I decided to wait for a few months until a week ago before my holiday i called for another exchange, was hoping for a perfect screen after my holiday, now holiday is over and iMac is back, just right after I pressed the power button, the start up screen with apple logo clearly tells me that i have got a even more disgusting panel - the worst of all i have to say, a new uneven shadow line on the bottom plus the usual yellower tint spreads over the middle of the screen, oh yes, they decided to make it even worse, a big dead spot as well in the corner ....
after a few hours, when i was editing a photo in Aperture, I have discovered something even more disturbing, from right edge of the screen inwards there is around 8cm wide vertical band shows obvious brighter tone than the rest of screen...
I do a lot of black & white photography plus a lot 3D graphic work, for a while I had tried to live with the yellow issue until it got really frustrating - now i have to once again arrange an exchange as this one is just unbearable!
Is this really Apple? Hard drive failed after a year and this is the 3rd screen of the iMac, and it just gets worse...
I wonder if there's anyone who had the luck to get the yellow screen replaced by a decent one?

Are you talking about a mid-2011 iMac or a 2010 iMac?
As it seems, the issue of color inconsistency of the iMac display is far from solved. Yellow tint, uneven brightness, light-leaks are very easily found even of newer models. I have a two-week-old mid-2011 27-inch iMac that I tried to replace for a new one because of yellow tint issue. It turned out that the replacement iMac had a worse screen... So I kept the first one. Not sure if the right thing to do is just get the screen replaced. It seems users have done it with no success...
So, I guess these problems are structural on the iMac line. They seem very much to be omnipresent. And I don't see Apple offering a genuine/trustworthy solution through its in-warranty support.

  • My sons touch has gone very light , almost White. It gets worse as the battery wears down. He swears he hasent got water near it. What could this be do you think?

My sons I touch has gone very light in colour almost white . It gets worse as the battery wears down . He swears that it hasent been near water so would Anyone know what this is . Should I take it in to fix ?

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iPod fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
