Bad quality in quicktime screen capture in maverics

Why the quality in quicktime screen capture is so bad with maverick? It appears that all quality controls for quick time recording completely disappeared? Are there any possibilities to record screen again in HD as in the previous OS? Thanks in advance!

I have a similar problem.  I used to reliably do screen recordings.  That is, I would do the screen recording, I would save the recording and I would be able to view it.  Now, I have intermittently been able to save the recording, but most of the time what I have saved is several minutes only of what should have been a much longer recording.  In the last two weeks, I have one recording of about 53 minutes....but otherwise all the recordings seem to stop early, I am unaware of it, I save the recording and it's only several minutes long.  Very bizarre.  Screencapture used to be reliable.
I am running OSX 10.9.5
2.7 Ghz Intel Core i7

MacBook Pro mid-2012

As I said in the subject I'm having issues importing a Quicktime Screen Capture into Final Cut Express. I keep getting this message.
File Error: 1 file(s) recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown
I figure it has to be a quick fix for this simple problem. And it's probably just my first time.

QuickTime Screen Recordings are H.264 video files. You need to convert this to +QuickTime Apple Intermediate Codec+ in order to use it in FCE. MPEG Streamclip (free) can do this for you.

  • Lion, Quicktime Screen-capture, and Photoshop

I've used Quicktime's screen capture tool to create Photoshop video guides in the past and it's produced really high quality, high fps results in a small file.  However, since I've upgraded to OS X Lion, my entire computer is brought to its knees during a Photoshop recording session.  As soon as I hit record, boom - Photoshop becomes really choppy and it's almost impossible to create a decent video.
Could anyone else here with Lion do a quick test to see if you get the same results?  Just open up a Photoshop file, open Quicktime, go to New / New Screen Recording, and see if you're able to use Photoshop without any performance drop.
I'm running CS5 on a dual quad-core mac pro with 12 gigs of ram.  It's about 3 years old, but I shouldn't be running into a performance hit like this.
Any feedback on your own experience or tests would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

Under OS X "Lion," every screen capture tool I have (Snapz Pro X, Screenflow, Layers, iShowU HD Pro) will no longer capture a DVD frame—if the DVD is being played by Apple's DVD Player. The resulting screen cap shows a "transparent" window. VLC still works in that regard. I've also noticed that the iTunes app no longer has a free-floating video window, which was always my preference. Videos now show within the boundaries of the iTunes window, or full-frame. One more note on Apple DVD Player is that invoking full-frame playback will slide in a new "space" with a background similar to that seen on iPads or behind the Desktop Widgets.
I realize capturing DVDs is not what you're trying to do, but all of the above indicates a complete change to the way OS X handles any streamed video. I have yet to make a test, but I suspect that output-to-NTSC through monitor ports may also be inhibited for certain things; Apple may be plugging the "analog hole" with software. My guess is that whatever background routines are responsible for this may be sufficient to slow the frame rate of your tutorial captures—in the same way that heightened security at airports now significantly slows boarding procedures.

  • Quicktime screen capture area size limit?

I really like the video screen capture capability of Quicktime, and especially the selectable area in the new OS. BUT, when I try to use it, and try to drag out a small capture area (a couple of hundred pixels), as soon as I complete the drag, the box suddenly gets bigger. As if there is a minimum size for the capture box, and I'm trying to command a smaller capture box than that. It won't let me do that, but defaults to a larger box. I can't make the box any smaller. I've never heard about this. Is this really true? If so, why would there be a minimum size of the box??

So if I want to capture a smaller piece of screen video, I have to capture 240x480, and then go into another application to crop it. Just doesn't make any sense.
You can do that if you want.
You can also update your system to Mavericks which I am using and which does not seem to have this limitation. Here is the QT 7 inspector window for a 72x34 pixel screen capture I just made:
And here is how the clip displays in the QT 7 player:
Here is the QT X v10.3 "Inspector" window:
And here is how the clip looks in the QT X v10.3 player:
As a fellow user, I have no idea as to why there are recording/playback limitations. If you feel so strongly about the matter, then you should send product feedback regarding the matter.
If upgrading your OS is out of the question, then a third possible workflow option would be to purchase a commercial screen capture utility having the capabilities and features you require.
When I try to select a smaller box, the capture box snaps out to 240x480. I can't capture a frame smaller than that. It simply won't let me. All those numbers sound pretty arbitrary, BTW. Whyever are there these 350/240/480 limits? One might think that if the playback limit was an arbitrary 350 pixels for some reason, the capture limit would be the same. But no.
Once again I have no knowledge as to the significance of the recording and/or playback limitations or why they vary between your system and mine. Unfortunately, Apple is not known for providing such information to users regarding the technical specifications, why they were implemented, and/or why they change.

  • Recording Quicktime Screen Capture WITH system audio

Picked up Snow Leopard earlier today. All installed, nice upgrade.
I've got a question regarding the new QuickTime. With the new QuickTime feature that allows you to capture screen movements and save as a .mov file, is it possible to also capture system audio?
I currently see 3 audio input options: 1.) built in mic, 2.) Soundflower (2ch), and 3.) Soundflower (16ch).
I've tried both of the "Soundflower" options (I don't know what these are) and they don't seem to be doing anything. One alternative, I suppose, is to play the audio through speakers and let the mic pick it back up .... but there's got to be a better option than that.
    Any suggestions?

You mean "you do not need to pay". The instructions you link to involve a third party application called SoundFlower.

  • Making a screen capture video to be digitally projected large - quality?

I am making a screen capture video on my macbook. The capture area is not the full 13" screen. Currently I am using quicktime. The video itself is very basic but it will ultimately be projected on a large wall.  What do I need to do in settings etc. to make sure the quality isn't compromised when projected? Quicktime does not seem to offer the option to record in HD quality when screen capturing. It looks great on my screen but I am unsure how it will translate large.  Please advise this rookie thank you!

    Thanks!
I'm only trying to capture a portion of my screen, but quicktime does not give the option to record in HD or control the quality when making screen captures.
I have downloaded IshowUHD and I can record in high dimensions but when I view the playback in fullscreen mode the quality does not seem to shift. Am I missing something super basic? Thanks in advance.

  • Bad quality of capturing from sony SR5e.

I have used iMovie for several months. It worked quite well at first. However, in these days, problems are always appeared. Firstly, it always got rather bad quality of clips after capturing from my SONY HDR-SR5E. It seems lost some frames; all of the objects in it appears jumping when they are moving. Secondly, when I restarted the iMovie and tried to capture again, iMovie just quit unexpectedly. I have also tried using Final Cut Express to capture in my machine, it works fine and get a smooth clip comparing with iMovie.

Already try this. This is not the problem ...
It's something on the rendering of the colors. You can see that on those 2 screenshots on the image referenced in the post on my blog :

  • How to make a high resolution screen capture?

    Hye,
I'm trying to make high resolution screen captures in Maverics.
On earlier systems, one could use Quartz Debug which had a slider that could alter resolution of the capture app.
Now on Mavericks this option is gone, it only allows Retina-like screen resolution for non-retina macs, but on my 27" imac, images look really blurry...
So any way to get the job done?

  • Is it possible for me to screen capture from one desktop while working on another desktop?

I would like to use QuickTime screen capture feature on Mountain Lion to record a video from Desktop 1, while working separately on Desktop 2. However, QuickTime records this by following my movements to Desktop 2 and then recording what I am doing in Desktop 2. Is there any way around this (either using Quick Time or perhaps a different program/software)?
    Thanks

    No.
I have multiple Apple IDs. Is there a way for me to merge them into a single Apple ID?
Apple IDs cannot be merged. You should use your preferred Apple ID from now on, but you can still access your purchased items such as music, movies, or software using your other Apple IDs.
If you are wondering how using multiple Apple IDs relate to iCloud, see Apple IDs and iCloud.

  • Video quality of Screen Captures

I was wondering if anyone else was experiencing poor video quality when using the Screen Capture feature? My image quality is so poor that you can't read any of the text that appears on the screen.
Is there anyway to tweak with the settings to improve the video quality?

No. QuickTime 7 can't record the screen, and the QuickTime Pro key doesn't change or unlock anything in the QuickTime X application.

  • Poor quality export from imported mp4 screen capture

My video source is an mp4 file created from a screen capture of a unix app running on a PC. Quicktime plays the mp4 file fine (lots of detail, dark blacks, ...), but the resulting movie (Share > Export Movie > HD 720p) is faded. When shown on a large screen, the movie is pixelated and faded (grey blacks, etc.).
I imported the mp4 file into iMovie (File > Import > Movies) with Fit in Frame, Optimize video unchecked, Widescreen (16/9), and 30 fps NTSC.
I have tried various combinations of import and export settings and the above is the best I get.
I'm guessing the import is throwing half the information away (hence the faded appearance). Whatever the cause, is there a way to import mp4 files into iMovie and get the same quality on the export? I tried exporting the entire import and got a file about half the size.

Your description of the problem - a 'comb' effect - sounds as if the "fields" which make up the resultant picture have been put together in reverse.
(..You don't normally see 'interlaced' video in iMovie's playback window - you normally see just a single field of the two, to make the picture clearer and simpler to display..)
[..A video picture's generally made up of two "fields" which each comprise half the number of lines down the screen: one field comprises the odd-numbered lines, and the other the even-numbered ones. Your exported video should be encoded with the lower (2nd) field first ..as described in this Apple document ..and the problem's mentioned here as well..]
However ..you said in your first post that "..I am using a Sony HDR-HC1 and trying to export at the highest possible settings.."
This is an HDV camcorder, and you didn't say if the original footage which you shot was HDV or normal DV. (HDV is recorded differently from normal DV, as it's recorded in a more compressed format, and it has to be automatically 'unscrambled' by Apple's Intermediate Codec while you're importing it into iMovie HD.)
It seems as if somewhere along the chain of importing>editing>exporting, the fields are being reversed, so that you get this jumpiness on replay when QuickTime tries to deliver a "highest quality" interleaved replay of both fields:
Ah ..sudden thought: you mentioned that you exported thro' iDVD: "..I have used iDVD by dropping it into a DVD theme and it seems to work ok, although the playback is a little jumpy, not quite as good I would have expected.."
You may have left the iDVD settings at their default 'NTSC' instead of switching them to PAL.
Check your iDVD Preferences ..that may be the problem.

  • Screen Capture Video Loses Quality When Imported Into iMovie - WHY?

I am using screen capture software to make a video of my screen at 1024x768. The video is for a tutorial. I want to use iMove to get things like transitions and such into the movie, and to add text and audio. The problem is that, although the video looks great in QuickTime, it loses quality significanly when I import into iMove. The text on the screen is blurry, and the quality of everything else is terrible as well.
Is this s limitation of iMove? Can screen capture video be imported? Does it only work with DV?
Also, I tried to convert the file to many other formats, from QuickTime to MPEG-4, so it's not the file type.
If anyone can help me out, I've be very grateful.
    Thanks!
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Your dimensions are getting in the way. iMovie converts your 1024X768 to a DV Stream file that is 720X480.
One workaround would be to set your display resolution smaller. Try 800X600 (if your windows fit that size).
If you're using Snapz Pro you should set your window capture to 640X480. This size will import nicely into iMovie.
An even better way would be to do all of the work using QuickTime Pro. Again a 1024X768 QT.mov file would not fit on the most common display settings used. When you add the QT Player window the controller would be below the screen and not accessible for most users.
800X600 would make a better file (smaller, too). It would still be 4:3 aspect and would also import into iMovie.

  • Maintaining quality of screen captured material

I'm just starting what will be quite a large video editing project. This film will include a lot of screen captured material from online environments such as Second Life as well as video from the "real world".
I'm trying to work out the best way forward for editing the material and getting the results I want.
This particular question relates to getting screen captured text to look good in the final output from Final Cut Express 4. Just to reiterate that this is captured text I'm writing about not text that has been generated in the editor.
I use Telestream's Screenflow to do the actual screen capturing and in Screenflow the captured text looks very good with sharp edges. Of course I can edit to a certain extent in Screenflow, then output from Screenflow to a file using H.265 codec and that output file will have the captured text in a good clear form. That output file is in a small manageable file size, so there is a fair amount of compression.
However, when I use Final Cut Express to edit the captured video I have a problem. To describe the process, I export the video from Screenflow with Animation codec so that there is no loss in quality with the export. Then I import that into Final Cut Express. Of course that video needs to be rendered in Final Cut Express but in the rendered video the quality of the captured text is very poor. That is the problem. I am hoping there is some way to edit this captured video without causing the captured text to go bad. Screenflow will do this but I can't work out how to get Final Cut Express to do this.
Thank you for any assistance you can give.

    Hi Ian
Thank you for your posting but this is not the issue. The output from Screenflow is usually around 700 px in width. Before outputing from Screenflow I frame the part of the screen I wish to put into Final Cut Express.
The Lossless (Animation codec) output from Screenflow looks absolutely fine.
Even if I output from Screenflow to H.264 it looks absolutely fine.
The problem is that after I import this to Final Cut Express, then render that, the result is that the captured text chat becomes very bad.
