Bad Quality When Importing
I recently bought a Sony HDR-SR12 and filmed a concert with it straight away in High Def and 16:9. Afterwards, I tried to edit the footage on Final Cut Express 4 and iMovie 8 with the latter informing me I need an Intel Mac (which I will be getting eventually).
For the time being, I asked a mate to save the concert on his computer in MPEG2. This works on my current computer, but the quality is not all that great. Whenever I view the files in Final Cut Express, MPEG Streamclip, iMovie and Quicktime, there are lines going across the screen and whenever there are movements it looks as though frames are being skipped. I tried rendering the footage in FCE, but it still looks the same, even when I put it onto a DVD.
I'm not sure as to whether these are side effects from shooting it in High Def, but is there a way I can save this footage in a format where the quality is watchable, even if it is in standard definition. If I have to do this through MPEG Streamclip (which I've also tried doing), how should I save it?
Also, if saving it as an MPEG2 was a mistake, what should I have done?
Thanks.
Dale
You should convert the files in Streamclip into DV not MPEG.
FCE does not work with mpeg, only DV, HDV and AVCHD (if you have an Intel Mac).

Does anyone experienced bad quality when burning a DVD?
Does anyone experienced bad quality when burning a DVD?
Using OS 10.6.8 and Magiv Video in iDVD, I am having a hard time creating a decent DVD. The videos per se are fine, but the intro menu and menu text and images are extremely poor quality and hard to read. What is going on?Hi my notes on this - might be of help
DVD quality
1. iDVD 08, 09 & 11 has three levels of qualities. (version 7.0.1, 7,0.4 & 7.1.1)
iDVD 6 has the two last ones
• Professional Quality
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - BEST (but not always for short movies e.g. up to 45 minutes in total)
• Best Performances
(movies + menus less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD (Can be best for short movies)
• High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6)
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
About double on DL DVDs.
2. Video from
• FCE/P - Export out as full quality QuickTime.mov (not self-containing, no conversion)
• iMovie x-6 - Don't use ”Share/Export to iDVD” = destructive even to movie project and especially so
when the movie includes photos and the Ken Burns effect NOT is used. Instead just drop or import the iMovie movie project icon (with a Star on it) into iDVD theme window.
• iMovie’08 or 09 or 11 are not meant to go to iDVD. Go via Media Browser and as Large (NOT HD or other resolutiona as result will suffer) or rather use iMovie HD 6 from start.
3. I use Roxio Toast™ to make an as slow burn as possibly e.g. x4 or x1 (in iDVD’08 or 09 this can also be set)
This can also be done with Apple’s Disk Utilities application when burning from a DiskImage.
4. There has to be about or more than 25Gb free space on internal (start-up) hard disk. iDVD can't
use an external one as scratch disk (if it is not start-up disc). For SD-Video - if HD-material is used I guess that 4 to 5 times more would do.
5. I use Verbatim ( also recommended by many - Taiyo Yuden DVDs - I can’t get hold of it to test )
6. I use DVD-R (no +R or +/-RW) - DVD-R play’s on more and older DVD-Players
7. Keep NTSC to NTSC - or - PAL to PAL when going from iMovie to iDVD
(I use JES_Deinterlacer to keep frame per sec. same from editing to the Video-DVD result.)
8. Don’t burn more than three DVDs at a time - but let the laser cool off for a while before next batch.
iDVD quality also depends on.
• DVD is a standard in it self. It is Standard Definition Quality = Same as on old CRT-TV sets and can not
deliver anything better that this.
HD-DVD was a short-lived standard and it was only a few Toshiba DVD-players that could playback.
These DVDs could be made in DVD-Studio Pro. But they don’t playback on any other standard DVD-Player.
Blu-Ray / BD can be coded onto DVDs but limited in time to - about 20-30 minutes and then need
_ Roxio Toast™ 10 Pro incl. BD-component
_ BD disks and burner if full length movies are to be stored
_ BD-Player or PlayStation3 - to be able to playback
The BD-encoded DVDs can be play-backed IF Mac also have Roxio DVD-player tool. Not on any standard Mac or DVD-player
Full BD-disks needs a BD-player (in Mac) as they need blue-laser to be read. No red-laser can do this.
• HOW much free space is there on Your internal (start-up) hard disk. Go for approx. 25Gb.
less than 5Gb and Your result will most probably not play.
• How it was recorded - Tripod vs Handheld Camera. A stable picture will give a much higher quality
• Audio is most often more critical than picture. Bad audio and with dropouts usually results in a non-viewed movie.
• Use of Video-editor. iMovie’08 or 09 or 11 are not the tools for DVD-production. They discard every second line resulting in a close to VHS-tape quality.
iMovie 1 to HD6 and FinalCut any version delivers same quality as Camera record in = 100% to iDVD
• What kind of movie project You drop into it. MPEG4 seems to be a bad choice.
other strange formats are .avi, .wmv, .flash etc. Convert to streamingDV first
Also audio formats matters. I use only .aiff or from miniDV tape Camera 16-bit
strange formats often problematic are .avi, .wmv, audio from iTunes, .mp3 etc
Convert to .aiff first and use this in movie project
• What kind of standard - NTSC movie and NTSC DVD or PAL to PAL - no mix.
(If You need to change to do a NTSC DVD from PAL material let JES_Deinterlacer_3.2.2 do the conversion)
(Dropping a PAL movie into a NTSC iDVD project
(US) NTSC DVDs most often are playable in EU
(EU) PAL DVDs most often needs to be converted to play in US
UNLESS. They are play-backed by a Mac - then You need not to care
• What kind of DVDs You are using. I use Verbatim DVD-R (this brand AND no +R or +/-RW)
• How You encode and burn it. Two settings prior iDVD’08 or 09
Pro Quality (only in iDVD 08 & 09)
Best / High Quality (not always - most often not)
Best / High Performances (most often my choice before Pro Quality)
1. go to iDVD pref. menu and select tab far right and set burn speed to x1 (less errors = plays better) - only in iDVD 08 & 09
(x4 by some and may be even better)
2. Project info. Select Professional Encoding - only in iDVD 08 & 09.
Region codes.
iDVD - only burn Region = 0 - meaning - DVDs are playable everywhere
DVD Studio pro can set Region codes.
1 = US
2 = EU

What it turned out to be was the "quality" settings in iDVD. The total clip time was NOT over 2 hours or 4.7GB, yet iDVD created massive visual artifacts on the "professional quality" setting.
I switched the settings to "high quality" which solved the problem. According iDVD help, "high quality" determines the best bit rate for the clips you have.
I have NEVER seen iDVD do this before, especially when I was under the 2 hour and 4.7GB limits.
For anyone else, there seem to be 2 places in iDVD to set quality settings, the first is under "preferences" and the second under "project info." They do NOT seem to be linked (i.e. if you change one, the other is NOT changed). take care, Mario
TO GET IT TO WORK SLIGHTLY FASTER
• Minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up hard disk
• No other programs running in BackGround e.g. Energy-Saver
• Don’t let HD spin down or be turned off (in Energy-Save)
• Move hard disks that are not to be used to Trash - To be disconnected/turned off
• Goto Spotlight and set the rest of them under Integrity (not to be scanned)
• Set screen-saver to a folder without any photo - then make an active corner (up right for me) and set
pointer to this - turns on screen saver - to show that it has nothing to show

Bad quality when play mov or mp4
I want to play mov or mp4 by quicktime. In my laptop it play well but in my another computer the quality for video is very bad!
Following is the features of that computer:
Windows XP Pro SP2
VIA C7 Processor 1500MHZ 512M RAM
Graphics card: VIA/S3G UniChrome Pro IGP
I upload the screen snapshot of this problem on my blog. Please look at the following url:
http://apolloxiao.blogspot.com/2009/11/bad-quality-when-play-mov-by-quicktime.ht ml
Thank you very much!My first thought was a video card driver because that will produce the streaks across the screen but usually more extreme.
Then it could be hardware related, do you know the history of the computer, as to any recent changes?
I don't really have a solution and don't want to string you along. But I swap around hardware, and me, I'd pull the video card out and make sure it's seated properly in the AGP or PCI slot on the motherboard. If it's not a on-board video card.
You seem to be showing a dual monitor set-up? If so wouldn't the primary be on the right? -
Bad image quality when importing from word
When importing from MS Word 2003 to RH X5.0.2, embedded
images are converted to jpg whith an obviously quite moderate
compression qulity. This is particularly evident for screenshots.
Is there a way to improve the image quality?Peter , these images were copied and pasted directly in to
the Word-document (using the Print Screen button) but I did find
out something. RoboHelp generates two image files of the types PNG
and JPG for each Word image (named, e.g., image102.png and
image103.jpg). Regretably, the lesser quality JPG is always
referenced in the topics instead of the much better PNG. Sometimes
the two images greately differ in size (pixel size), but most of
the time they are about the same size.
So the task might be to change the references in all topics
using a script and then manually checking the images for their
size.
An observation: Any GIF images in the Word file (i.e., real
*.gif files that were inserted over the Insert menue) remain GIF
files after the import, they are not converted and maintain a good
quality. -
( Additional ) Bad Quality : Photos Imported from iPhoto6 to iMovie 6
Although imovie 6 is caught up with a sum of disadvantages of imovie
5, I observe a new disadvantage which did not exist before.
With knowknowing:
In the "multi-media" mitre + "photographs", when I import
a photograph from iphoto, I observe that the image which is transcribed
in the screen of the visual display of imovie 6 is of a perfect
quality.
For example, a photograph taken with 3,5 Méga pixels with a
weight of 2 Mo. PRECISION : !!!!!! ( FORMAT IS JPEG ) !!!!!
The image is perfect, and in the internal adjustments
with imovie 6 that they are with or without the effect Ken Burns,
it seems the original.
However when I decide to apply it in the
timeline and that I it replay in the visual display, I note that the
quality of the image was strongly degraded ( very bad quality).
There are somebody in the specialists or the helpers who can give me explanations and how to cure that,
because this disadvantage is strongly regrettable and detrimental for me.
Thanks to you.

Flash animation bad quality when tweened
hello to all!
a)im getting very bad results when i tween objects in flash, ive done the designs(clog wheels)in photoshop and added some fx to them,i save them as a png file and import them into flash, when static all is good, but once they start rotating(motion tweened as a movie clip) making the wheels go around they just look terrible.is it natural for the desing to loose in quality since its moving?or is there smthing that i can do to fix it?
b)when i motion tween an object there is a start keyframe and an ending keyframe once the cursor gets to the ending keyframe there isnt a smooth cycle it seems like the motion does an instant flash at the end,id like for the motion to seem like the wheel is spining like a normal wheel would do.
any help woudl be appreciated.
best regards.hey!!!
thanks alot for your answer,i ticked on the smoothing box,and also customed the bitmap to 100%quality and it does sure look better.
thanks 1000 for your help.

After Effects riddle (bad quality when I delet sth different)
Hi there. I have one bought project an I am wondering why my logo makes blurred automatically if I delete any different layer who is unseen.
Someone can explain this?
This is an "UNSEEN" layer. It has to be right here. When I delete this invisible layer, my logo ("Logo Animation" name below) makes blurres and got bad quality. But I see no reason for that. "Map 1" has no option or parented or something. Do you know why if I delete unseen "Map1" my Logo makes bad quality?
Here is a whole project:

Poor audio quality when importing CDs (but only some of them)
I am experiencing a bizarre audio quality problem:
When playing or importing tracks from CDs into iTunes 9.0.2, on some CDs there is very poor quality and an audible crackling (like an old scratched lp)whereas on others the quality is perfect. This translates to the iPod as well.
I've looked all over the internet and am now thoroughly confused. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. If you are hearing it both on iTunes playback and on the iPod, it is probably an importing problem, i.e. the track is bad.
When you import, do your Import Settings use Error Correction? If not, turn it on and re-rip one of the problem tracks. -
Poor Quality When Imported From FCP
Hello I have been having issues when importing a QT files into After Effects. When exported from FCP and imported into After Effects the footage loses significant quality, maybe a little interlaced. Ive checked and double checked fields, Im exporting in animation. Ive done both QT movie and QT conversion with the same result. Also it happens with files exported from FCP from other computers. Ive checked export settings & coposition settings. Any Ideas?

Print quality when importing Financial Reporting in to MS-Office?
Hi,
I want to create a report package in MS-Office using Financial reporting. I want to import several FR reports to MS-Word using Smartview and then be able to print the word document.
When doing so I am not able to get the same quality when printing from word as when printing from FR. Figures and text in the word printout are a bit blurry and not at all as sharp as when printed from FR.
Is it possible to get the same (or almost) quality in text? If so how do i do?
Thanks
FransIs it fixed? We are on 11.1.1.3 and FR imports into PowerPoint and Word still have poor resolution.

Poor Video quality when importing from SONY DCR-SR100
I am brand new to Mac and iMovie and FCE. One of the reasons I switched to Mac was frustration over poor video output from Windows based video editing programs. When importing video from the SR100 into iMovie and then iDVD, the DVD quality is noticeably poorer than when the camera is connected directly to the Plasma TV. I have been reading these forums and loaded MPEG Streamclip and purchased the Quicktime MPEG2 Download, but I still can't get the video output to look as good as the camera. I obviously have some learning to do, but is there any hope of achieving equal quality output from a DVD as straight from the camera? Is there a good source of information/textbook on this topic? The biggest improvement comes from using the "de-interlace" option in MPEG Streamclip, but the overall quality of the video appears washed out and somewhat blotchy compared to the direct camera footage.
Welcome to the macworld! What imovie does incredibly well is make it easy to create fun and interesting movies. I have used both for several years and only recently with some packages such as adobe premiere elements has the windows world kept up with the mac with respect to ease of use! And even know the packages are still not as easy as imovie. Anyway, with respect to your post and getting the video quality to the best possible output quality using DV material, you are on the right path. The best workflow is to use streamclip and de-interlace prior to editing in imovie. I am not sure if you are doing that yet with your workflow. Yes, its an extra step, but it is well worth it to avoid imovie dropping a field upon export. You can play around with the adjustments to increase contrast, color and et al on the adjustment button. Another option is shooting progressive.
To set expectations, it is second generation footage the minute its imported. However, you should be still getting very good results. FCE gets footage closer to the original footage since it is a true DV editor and uses both fields, but imovie is still preferred by me because of how easy it is to skim, tag and find the material you want then easily do transitions and ken burns for photo's. Fantastic. The way i look at it....watching footage straight from the camera is the worst quality you can get -- It's like listening to your spouse talk and talk and talk and never get to the point until you forget what that point was....editing gets the footage straight to the point....thats quality!

Video quality when importing with letterboxing checked
If I import mini dv shot in 16:9 using the letterboxing during import, does it degrade video quality? What settings are best when importing 16:9 mini dv?
Thanks!Set the project as DV Widescreen before importing. Do not tick 'Automatic Letterboxing'.

Quality when Importing PowerPoint
When importing PowerPoint slides, I have experienced the
occasional image flipping, and am not always that happy with the
image quality. As a result, I have generally resorted to screen
captures of PowerPoint in slide show view as opposed to using the
import feature. I have noticed this in other tools. Is Captivate
using PowerPoint's converter--my guess is that PowerPoint's own
converter is the source of the problems.Hello alasala,
I am really sorry to hear that you have been experiencing
problems with importing PowerPoint slides into Captivate. Whilst I
cannot offer you any solution, I would suggest that you submit this
a bug using the

Sorry I cannot be of any more use, but like you and many
others I would really like to see Adobe address these types of
PowerPoint issues and the best way to ensure this happens is for us
as a community to keep filing those bugs.

Poor image quality when importing SWF
I maintain a site for a photographer and as he added more
images the SWF got to be very large, so I split up the site and
used a main page to import the smaller SWF files into a target.
However, I found that all my clean crisp images become dull when
imported but still look sharp in the SWF itself. I tied to find all
the JPEG settings and push them up but still with no luck. Does
anybody have any insight to why this is happening?Hello micsaint111111111111,
The reason they look more blurry than in the original swf is
that you are
dealing with dual compression from the original swf AND the
swf you are loading
the images into.
The easiest/best way to import your jpgs would be using
LoadMovie to load
the actual jpg files. That keeps all the jpgs separate so
your swf file will
be tiny. Plus the quality will be the same as the original
jpg.
That said- have you gone into your swfs and changed the
default image quality
on each of the images to 90 or 100? You do that in your
library by right-clicking
on the actual images and then going to Properties and
unchecking "Use document
default quality". That is one issue that a lot of people seem
to miss and
it might help if you don't want to recode your Flash with the
LoadMovie method.

Loosing quality when import-export file
I am just wondering, if I loose some quality when I - lets say- an Apple Pro Res 422 HQ 1080p video clip, I import to FCP, do some modifications, export to Pro Res 422 HQ again, import it to Photoshop, do some more modifications> export to the same, but find, I need to work in FCP again, import it, do some modification and export it again to Pro Res 422 HQ. Would there be a visible quality loss?
DorianTry this.
Make a copy of a clip.
Take the copy and edit/color/alter the images using all the operations you would normally.
Then, look at the original clip vs the altered clip on external monitoring devices (including scopes) to decide if you have an issue.
Good luck.
