Bad quicktime playback

I recently imported a video to my hard drive using MacTheRipper. I wanted it to be in .mov format so I ran it through MPEG StreamClip 1.3.1 (With the box checked to "fix streams with data breaks"). This took about 20 hr to do and my end result is footage that "lurches" along (stops & starts every few seconds). Is there a way to fix this or do I have to start all over again?---hope not! Under Stream Clip "Export to Quicktime" (Movie Exporter) I selected 720x480 NV-NTSC (frame rate) and 100% Quality. Reinterlace Chroma & Zoom (100%) were set by default.
Also: When I selected the files I highlighted them all. I just went back and tried choosing the first file and was give the option to "Fix time Code Breaks". This option didn't appear when selecting all the files.
Any ideas?

Arghhh... Finally realised it's the settings for my Display in System Preferences. For some peculiar reason after the Quicktime update it was reset to "colours : Thousands" instead of "colours : MIllions"

Quicktime playback all jerky after update

The last quicktime update has turned my playback all jerky. I can't even play a normal DV cam video with more then about 4 ot 5 fps. The playback info window however doesn't appear to notice and says the playback is fine at 25 fps as it should be.
Since I'm working in the video industry, it is vital for me that quicktime playback. And I work with HDV videos, which have been playing absolutely fine. And now, they play with 1 frame every 3 seconds. I've tried a reinstall of Quicktime, I even completely setup a new system install. Same result.

This has happened once before (some time ago) and was fixed. But every one should complain since intel Mac get all of Apple's attention now.
Also, reverting to a previous version with pacifist does work but then you cannot video conference in ichat and who knows what else!

Quicktime playback is terrible

My quicktime playback is terrible. I have quicktime v7.4.5(v25). The picture is unclear, pixelated, and very choppy. I am trying to play videos from my Kodak digital camera and streaming videos. I tried downloading flip4mac and VLC. I got nothing from these. Maybe this computer just doesn't have enough juice. If anyone can help at all please let me know. I am on the edge of buying a PC and going back to windows.

Yeah just check out www.forum-snowboards.com. Their homepage has a video playing in the background and my computer plays it in clips like a slideshow. The other videos are from my Kodak digital camera that are about 10MB, 20 seconds long, and 640x480.

QuickTime playback blur

Since 7.5.5 all QuickTime playback is severely blurred (bloom). This occurs in Safari with anything that uses QuickTime to play video clips, as well as in the QuickTime player. VLC will playback the same clips without problem.
Any ideas anyone?

Quicktime playback cellphone video

Apparently BlackBerry [Curve] video defaults to QuickTime playback [tags as 3GPP] however, I cannot get my QuickTime player to show video/audio content, even though slidebar says something is playing. Has anyone else exerienced this? How did you fix it? When it downloaded to PC it autosaved as a QuickTime file.

One further note; MP3 files on same BlackBerry downloaded along with phone's camera file. These play just fine on QT.

Quicktime playback freezes all the time

I have problems with Quicktime Playback on my Macbook Pro.
Either Quicktime X or Quicktime Pro 7 seem to have this problem. 1080p Video's encoded by Compressor with H264 freezes (as in, does not respond to input, or if it does, it sometime takes 1-2 minutes before it reacts to a command given). It just doesn't respond to anything (and just keeps playing when playing) and the only way to stop it is to Force a Quit.
It seems fine when just playing the whole file straight and do nothing.
Sometimes it shows >>00X (>> as fast forward signs).
This is very annoying, as it prevents me playing any video file I rendered and navigating through it.
Anybody any ideas, or a tip how I can figure out what to do?

Not sure which link you are referring to here. First is still broken for me and last works fine. I have no problem in either QT X or QT 7 on a Mac PowerBook Pro. File drops 60 to 80 percent of the frames to keep up on original PPC G5 DP model but this to be expected for 1920x1080 content at data rates pushing 5 Mbps.
Can you be more specific as to what you mean by "not respond to input?" The only delay I get is when I jump the playhead beyond the range of the currently cached data and have to wait for the "download" to "catch up." This will also happen if your ISP connection is congested and the cacheing of data is slower than the playback data rate. You might also check to see how many "processes" you typically keep running. These can also slow your ability to process/play the movie. And yes, keeping multiple applications open can greatly slow down movie playback if they are actively working. (I.e., I would not expect to see much difference if FCP is idling but would expect a big difference if it is doing some "heavy" rendering operations. And even if idling, they system has to devote memory space to the app, as well as, waste cycles checking to see if you task them with some new activity. (Check you activity monitor.)
As far as I can see, there is nothing seriously wrong with your file and since they play well on my systems, I can't offer much advice here. (I normally stick with Main Profile @ Level 3.1 and setting compatible with iPad/TV playback, but if you need Level 4.0, I don't see anything wrong here.)

Mnimum system for Quicktime playback

We're looking to set up an music for film scoring machine.
I did some research but couldn't find any specific info about different compi configs and quicktime performance. Money is an issue so we're trying to figure out the minimum requirements to get a reliable Logic with quicktime playback machine.
Right now we're tending towards a MacBookPro or iMac DC with a Moto firewire interface (828) and a Canopus DV converter (all video will be DV)
Would this be a reliable setup or would it be better to get a G5 desktop and a dedicated PCI video card like the FuseX.
Also if adding additional firewire harddrives to the laptop or iMac would this effect the firewire i/o and firewire dv performance.
Lastly how many tracks on average can you get out of the MacBook or the iMac DC (I know that this depends on plugins etc.)

VLC is telling you which codecs or libraries its trying to use to decode the file. Try opening MPlayer OSX, show the playlist window, drag the file into the playlist, select the file in the playlist and click the "i"nfo button. MPlayer will generally show you what it determines the data itself to be encoded as - not which codec it will use.

Quicktime Playback is Pixelated

Hi,
I have a client on a 1.67 PB 17" send me a quicktime file the other day that was extremely pixelated. This is a reel that they have done from one of their advertising companies.
I played the original file back from the website, and it played fine.
I had her try to playback some movie trailers from apple.com/quicktime, and they played fine on her machine as well.
Trying to figure out why she'd be getting this poor quality when doing playback. Other quicktime movies on her machine do not have this problem.
She is running the latest version of Quicktime.
Any ideas?

This part had me confused:

It made me think that you had a client send you a file that was extremely pixelated. If the only combination that is causing a problem is that particular movie when viewed on your client's computer and online, and any other movies play fine on her computer, and the problem file plays fine on your computer, I would double check what she means by pixelated.
Does the file play ok for her when it's local and in QuickTime Player? If it does it makes me wonder if the issue is that the movie is breaking up due to a bad Internet connection. That wouldn't be pixelated, but it would be fairly broken up.
What is the data rate of the movie?

Quicktime playback very choppy

I have recently purchased a MacPro (late 2013, 8 core 3GHz, 64 GB memory, OSX 10.9.2) and this morning it started playing video very choppy.
First off, there were some mp4 videos on my drive that all of the sudden I'm getting an error message that Quicktime can't play them. Almost as if a piece of software had gone missine or a bad upgrade (which I haven't done in the last few days).
The .mov files I have gotten to play play alright if they're very small files. Anything else will play for a bit )10-30 seconds) then first the audio starts cutting out then the video starts to get really choppy. It's like Quicktime is running out of memory, but that can't be the case with 64 GB.
Additionally, and possibly related, work in FCPX has slowed way down to about half the speed of my retina MBP. Could a video card have gone bad?
Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

also, if i put the video on an external hard drive, it runs fine.
Interesting ... fairly rare sort of problem, but it might be worth checking if the new drive is currently set to PIO rather than DMA. There's information on how to switch a drive to DMA in the *Modify your System Drive Configuration* section in the following document:

Quicktime playback error and Final Cut Pro

Hi,
I'm having a problem watching a quicktime movie that I made in Final Cut Pro. I'm working on a project at school and the computers there are all G5's. I put the film together at school and I exported the movie using the default settings in Final Cut for quicktime for the web at the medium bandwidth level. Part of the assignment is to post a clip from the film on for playback on the net. The film is playable on computers with quicktime 7 installed, like the ones at school or my PC which has the latest version of quicktime on it. But on my Ibook I only have quicktime 6.5.3. I have an older Ibook, it's a G3 700Mhz running OSX version 10.2.8. The latest version of quicktime requires 10.3.9+. When I click the link for the clip it loads on a new page and then gives me an error message saying quicktime is missing a component and it's not available to download, I click ok and the video appears as a white box with the playback controls at the bottom. The audio works fine but there's no picture.
Is there an update somwhere for quicktime 6 that will fix the problem?

How to Identify the file*, video and audio** format of a movie or sound file
In QuickTime Player
Open the file
Window menu > Show movie info
Look in the Format: field
Note that QuickTime Player may fail to display any audio information for some files.
In MPlayer OSX:
Show the playlist window if it isn't already visible.
Drag the movie file into the playlist window.
Select the movie in the list
Click the "i" button for info
In VLC
Open the movie in VLC
Window menu > Info
Click the black triangles so that they point down
Note that VLC does not display the file format, only the format of the content (audio and video) within the file. A file ending in .divx for instance, is probably in actuality an avi file but VLC doesn't show that information - MPlayer will and QuickTime Player will - if - QuickTime Player will open the file to begin with.

Quicktime playback of .TOD files with Perian installed

I recently purchased a JVC GZHD3 camcorder, and have had no problems playing the .TOD files in quicktime until I installed Perian 0.5 which I got from the apple website. Why did does it now say, the movie could not be opened, the movie contains and incorrect duration? Like I said, I never had any issues with playback of my recorded video until I installed Perian. What's the deal here with these HD files?

Both of these work with TOD file extension. Also the contents can be down converted from High Definition to DV standard thru firewire (1394) to be edited with older versions of editing software.

Setup files for Final Cut Pro for 60i (for USA) needs to be downloaded and installed On the same page there is a tutorial link with individual sections for recordings made in FHD or SP/1440CBR modes. It shows you how to convert the file to either AIC (Apple Intermediate Codec), YUV (uncompressed) format or HDV1080i

If you are using Final Cut Pro or other professional non-linear editing programs on the Mac, you cannot use the camera's native .TOD format, which is basically an MPEG inside the .TOD container.
Forget about following JVC's instructions: they are too time-consuming and don't allow batch processing. The easiest conversion method I've found requires two freeware programs: The VLC media player, and MPEG Streamclip, both available on the Apple Website (and elsewhere).
You'll first need to use the VLC player to convert the .TOD into a .TS file, which takes seconds (you are only changing the container format to MPEG TS, not actually changing compression). Once you've changed the .TOD file to a .TS file, you can use MPEG Streamclip to change to a variety of file formats that Final Cut Pro can recognize. Of course since you are recompressing the file at this point, expect this to take far longer than the first step.
Note - MPEG Streamclip requires Apple's MPEG-2 component to edit the video.

Why can't Quicktime playback Muxed MPEG-2?

When I get quicktime to playback a muxed MPEG-2 file there is no sound. Why does this happen? The description on version tracker says:
The QuickTime 6 MPEG-2 Playback Component provides QuickTime 6 users with the ability to import and play back MPEG-2 content, including both muxed (the audio and video tracks have are interlaced together into one track) and non-muxed (a.k.a. elementary) program streams.
However, for me this isn't happening. I can see the video but get no audio. Yes - I know other tools can play the sound, but why not Quicktime?

You'll notice the restrictions on some audio codecs. Not all DVD's are the same.

Quicktime playback

I'm having a problem viewing .MOV videos on my MacBook Pro, all I get is audio. I have downloaded the MPEG-2 codec for Quicktime, but this doesn't help.
The videos are from my JVC hard drive camcorder. When I plug the same camcorder into my Mac Pro it immediately recognises the files and downloads them into Imovie. According to 'Get Info' the output files have a codec of MPEG-2 SD Camcorder, which as I said, play very well.
But when I do exactly the same with my MacBook Pro all I get is a blank screen with audio, the codec, according to 'Get Info' is m2v1.
Is there anything I can do to correct this? Any help would be appreciated.
I should add that I have the latest versions of Leopard and Quicktime.

Do you have iMovie '08 installed on both machines? If not, install it on your MacBook Pro. If already installed on both, check to see that MacBook Pro has all of the same components as your Mac Pro.

M2V1 is the FourCC for your raw MPEG2/AC3 files on the camcorder. These files are not edit compatible since they contain I-, P-, and B-frames in a GOP (group of pictures) structure. In order to edit the content, iMovie '08 transforms the files as part of the import process. Basically the content is demultiplexed, the video frames are decoded and the and saved as all I-frames in an MOV file container. Since this essentially turns the MPEG-2 content into Motion-JPEG, the video can now be edited. At the same time, the audio data is also demultiplexed and the individual left and right audio channels are transcoded to individual AIFF (linear PCM audio using "Big Endian" byte order) and stored in the same MOV file container along with the transformed video. A time code track and start and/or end data offsets are then added to minimize possible audio-video drift in the final MOV file.
I suspect your problem is that your Mac Pro recognizes the modified files and can play/process the data using the iMovie '08 installed support while your MacBook Pro does not have this support and relying on the original M2V1 FourCC, is trying to decode the video using the QT MPEG-2 Playback component instead. Since this component apparently will not handle the modified video, all you get is the audio which is "natively" compatible with the base QT structure.
If true, then you have two options. The first is to copy the raw camcorder files to your MacBook Pro and convert them manually to whatever compression format you want using the QT MPEG-2 Playback component you already have together with MPEG Streamclip as suggested by David or you can install iMovie '08 or the missing component(s) to your MacBook Pro to make it compatible with your "iMovie '08 converted" MOV files.

How can I make screen bigger than the 2 inch square for Quicktime playback

My playback of videos with Quicktime has viewing area of about 2 inches square. How do you make it larger for video viewing?

Note that if the video is in a low resolution (as would seem to be the case given the native window size), expanding the window will yield a fuzzy picture, more so the larger you expand the window.

AE CS3 HD exported Quicktime playback stutters!

The Problem: After exporting our HD After Effects project to QuickTime the playback stutters just a bit. It will run along fine and then it jerks/hiccups. This happens at various times during playback. We have tried many different export settings but no luck. We would really appreciate some help with this. Thank you.
About our project: We are creating an intro animation for viewing on our computer monitor and for DVD. The movie will be made up of only High Res photos separated into several layers to create a 3D effect. We import the .psd files, add the layers to the timeline and check 3D layers. We create space between each layer on the z axis and then move a camera through the scene. The project dimensions are 1920 X 1080 and the photos are as big as 2000 px X 2000 px. The movie length is about 2:00 min.

The stutters are actually already in your animation, they are NOT being caused by playback issues.
You can see this by single frame advancing through your animation, you will quite often encounter frames where nothing changes when compared to the last frame, and you then get a jump on the next frame. This means frames are being dropped during rendering of the animation or the master file you are using has gone through some sort of frame rate conversion. Probably you have converted from 24 frames per second to 29.97 frames per second which requires repeating a number of frames/fields per second (5.97 frames) , these repeated frames will destroy the illusion of smooth motion.
Heres something you can try:
Check the original animation file by step framing through one frame at a time. Do you see frames that are exactly the same as the previous one? If the answer is yes... then you need to re render the animation, try doing it at the same frame rate you plan to output (29.97fps).
If the answer is NO... then just use the native framerate of that file to do the rest of your project. ie. DONT upsample the framerate to 29.97 or anything else.
The other option is (if the actual real time sync of the animation doesnt matter) to go back to your original animation file and just play the 24fps animation at 29.97 at one to one frame. So we discard the playback rate of the input file (24fps) and just display one frame of the input for each frame required at the output. This ensures that the motion will be smooth, (because we are not repeating frames to keep the duration the same) however it will be playing back slightly faster.
I happened to find this topic because I'm researching how to get smooth playback of quicktime movies on a desktop screen. Its actually proving incredibly hard. Even if you manage to create a master file that actually has your smooth animation in at 24fps... chances are Quicktime will frak it up for you... because it dynamically changes the framerate on playback to suit the display anyway.
If your on a Mac then your desktop is probably set to 60Hz (Which really means 59.94Hz). So re-rendering your 3d animation at 29.97 is probably your best chance at getting smooth motion in the final viewing.
