Bad source tape

FCP 4 won't capture from source tape. It said that it might be bad source tape. I made other dubbing from DV to DV and it still won't work. Is there a way to fix source tape. I had an interview with a guy and now he is in bad shape and so won't able to interview him. HOPE that you have a solution for me to rescue it. Thanks

I am having the same issue. Running FCP 4.5 HD, capturing 24PA anamorphic. Shot off an XL-2, capturing with a DVX-100A. The first 6 tapes worked great, and the last 2 tapes we tried were having mad problems. I would start the capture clip, and it would capture between 5 and 10 seconds before that same error message would pop up. Sometimes would capture the occational clip from the same tape. Used head cleaner, tried it as a non controlable device. The error would always pop up in the same spot on the clip. The tapes are not being captured in the order we shot, so it doesnt appear to be anything with the camera we shot with. Case in point, one of the last scenes we shot, we had no problem with, but one of the first tapes we shot, there were issues. It seems to pick on random tapes.

  • Dealing with time code breaks on the source tape

Some of my source tapes have broken time code, because of "empty space" between recordings. What's the best way to deal with that if you want to be able to automatically recapture video from a tape?
    Thanks.

There are a few possible solutions depending on what you need from the tapes.
You can dupe the whole tape onto another camera or deck (via firewire), or use capture now to grab the whole tape. You'll need to edit the preferences to only warn on timecode breaks, and not create new clips at breaks.
You could also set the FCP capture controls to be a 'non-controllable device', this means you need to hit play on the deck and use 'capture now' in the log and capture window. The only problem with this is that the timecode is not from the tapes, it is generated by FCP to fix the breaks, so batch re-capturing won't work (bad news if the breaks mash up the audio etc).
Duping the tapes can be done by using just one camera and your mac. Capture via the 'non controllable' device method above. Then drop the footage into a sequence and then print that to tape. Then use this tape to capture from & you have footage that will recapture at a later date if needed.
Timecode is a real pain if you have many breaks, duping is often the easiest solution.

  • FCP error message: Unable to read the data on your source tape!

    Hey,
So I have been editing on the MacPro now for over a year and I have never seen this message before...the message reads:
_*"Capture encountered a problem reading the data on your source tape. This could be due to a problem with the tape."*_
Has anyone got this message and could help me out please? I need to edit these tapes A.S.A.P.
    Thank You,
    Erick

why would it start a month later giving me problems instead of when it was updated?
That is a good point. Anything change since the time it worked to when it didn't? How about trying another firewire cable. Those can go south without notice, might cause this.

  • How do I get around source tape issues while importing a DV tape?

Ok so I recently purchased Final Cut Studio 3 and I am attempting to import (to Final Cut Pro 7) DV tapes via a Samsung digital camcorder (model: SC-D365) and a 800/400 Firewire cable. However after a certain amount of time (it varies from capture to capture) a message pops up and displays the following "Capture encountered a problem reading the data on your source tape. This could be due to a problem with the tape. Capture has been aborted and your clip has been saved". The tapes themselves play perfectly on the camera. Also the few clips that I have gathered after many attempts have tons of audio holes. I am new to Final Cut Pro and have tried everything and I really need to figure this out because the tapes that I have are the only tapes of the project. Any help would be appreciated and since I am new to the program I would greatly appreciate detailed steps if you know how to fix it.

That camera is MiniDV, so by and large should be compatible overall. You should run a head cleaning tape (or a head cleaning ape if you have one - Magilla Gorilla?). But your deck may not be completely compatible with the recording. Subtle variations can cause dropouts that you won't see because the electronics just substitute the last packet from to hide this during playback. I've had tapes that would capture just fine in one deck, and dropout central in another.
Best bet is using the camera that recorded it to play it back.
Worst case scenario, set the capture to non-controlled device, press the capture button, then press play on the deck. However, you will not be able to re-capture that segment automatically should you lose your capture files.
    make sense?

  • Capture encountered a problem reading the data source tape .

    FCP 4.5
    SONY DSR-20 deck
    dual 1.5GHZ
There are sound drop-outs on my source NTSC mini-dv tapes
the time-code looks pretty steady in the DSR-20 deck display
however i keep getting the following message when i try to digitize:
"Capture encountered a problem reading the data on your source tape.
This could be due to a problem with the tape. Capture has been aborted
and your clip has been saved"
I've tried setting Device Control to "Non-Controllable Device" and trying to capture video ONLY [the drop-out is mainly in the sound] which has generally solved this problem in the past but to no avail.
    The same message comes up.
I realize my source tapes are messed up but how to work around it?
    any advice please !
    thank you

The most direct work-around is to play your DV tape through the analog outs on some device and to bring the signal into a a/dv converter and to capture using 'capture now/non-controllable device'
I'm doing this as I write. A student, who did not know any better, recorded on LP mode and the timecode (and recording in general) is nearly unusable. This is the only way I've been able to get it into the system. It ain't pretty but you will have the material.
You are correct when you inquire that there will be no time code and the material will take a 2 conversion hit.
    Good luck.

  • How to output a file showing visible time code from the source tape

Can someone tell me which settings to use to output a file that has a visible time code readout from the source tape.  I shot an interview and now I want to make a video file for a transcriber so they can include the time code reference numbers from the source video on the written transcript.  Also, does the file need to be output from the timeline, or can this be done directly from a clip in the project.
    Thanks.

    PC with Windows Vista
    Premier Pro CS4

    Hi,
You could try maybe selecting all your clips on the timeline and drag the "timecode" video effect onto it ( type the word timecode at the top of effect panel on left to find it fast )...
Then you can change it from smpte if you want -----to source or media ...something like that...or to 'generate'...use what you like best..
you can also change the codes position in the clip...

  • Cleaning up bad source in Garage Band

I have some audio tapes that I need to burn into CD's, however, the tape has a nice hiss/buzz/humm that was resulted from recording on a cheap recorder from the telephone. What can I do in GB to fix this? I have played with the treble reduction and AULowpass filter and eq, and there is still a hum.
Any help in removing this is greatly appreciated. I can't change the sourc, its fixed, just need help in cleaning it up.
Thanks and best to you all...
    CW

To build on Hangtime's suggestions, for hiss I'd try the gate, and graphic Eq(probably the 2nd or 3rd band in from the right side). For hum, try cutting the graphic at 60 cycles, or whatever slider is closest to 60 (I don't have it in front of me at the moment). You could also try cutting multiples of 60. 120, 240 etc

  • Problem with source tape and drop frames with capturing HDV

I am having trouble capturing a tape. Every time I try and capture I get the message problem with tape, I try to change settings but after a few seconds of capturing the capture stops. I know that the tape is fine so it does not have anything to do with my tape. Capture also stops because it comes up with a message saying drooped frames.

Are you capturing to an external or secod drive, right? What kind of drive? What camera?

  • Source Tape Time Code Capture

Is Final Cut Express HD 3.5 capable of capturing the source time code over firewire?

No, but you can reveal it with Piero's Time Code plugin which you can find here along with some other goodies:-

  • Rendering imported iMovie clips in Final Cut Express

I'm learning FCExpress with a previous iMovie project as my footage. The clips/edited sequences dragged/dropped to the browser from an iMovie need to be rendered, but when I click "render all" a menu appears with a list of checkmarked and uncheckmarked options that I cannot find explained in either the Help window or the hardcopy manual. Maybe there somewhere, but haven't found it. Is it detailed somewhere? Or can you briefly explain the menu options and what the checks mean? Thanks. This has gotta be a dumb question, but I'm stuck there.

    Dear Tom,
I did the exact thing of importing iMovie Clips to FCE HD and I had to render the clips before I could add any effects to them.
    1) I did this because I had problem with capturing clips from my DV camera using FCE. I had error message like "bad source tape". Any advice for this?
    2) After importing and rendered from iMovie, FCE HD could not work Real time with my rendered clips. Every transition or video effects had to be rendered. Shucks, I'm perplexed.

  • Capturing aborted because of "bad tape"! Help!

Help! I've been troubleshooting for days it seems, changing capture settings and referring to the help guides and so on-- I am trying to capture from my professional camcorder a Sony Z1-U.. when I go to capture from a perfectly good tape I get this error message--
"Capture encountered a problem reading the data on your source tape. This culd be due to a problem with the tape. Capture has been aborted and clip has been saved--"
It captures exactly 3 seconds of the tape then aborts-- I've tried dubbing to an entirely different tape, I've tried using different capturing devices, I get the same error code each time!
I am at my witts end, frustrated and over a much needed deadline...someone please help me!

just thinking out loud, if you dubbed to a different tape, that rules out timecode and tape issues. You say "tried using different capturing devices" do you mean different deck/camera or a different computer with FC on it?
Do you have access to a different computer to try capturing to? Seems to me if you've eliminated the timecode, deck/camera and firewire cable, it must be hardware/software problem on the computer.
Also, just as a diagnostic, what happens if you try to capture with imovie?

  • Changing the Tape Name of a media file

I need to change the Tape Name of an hour long media file that I captured a while ago.
(Gave it the wrong name and didn't notice til today.)
    Is this possible?
Can I use the new name if sometime down the line I need to recapture the media?
Or are my only options to recapture or use the old name?
I haven't done anything with the file, haven't started the edit yet.
I need to change the Tape Name as well as the File Name and move it into a new FCP project.

I wish I could share your conviction on this working. I have had many instances of reel number changes not following through the workflow. (afaik reel number info is not embedded into the quicktime file, it remains within the fcp project file. how can you see its there in the quicktime file Michael? ) only too frequently do reel numbers get corrected and then revert to the original bad reel number.
I know this can be rectified by entering the right reel number in the first place, but human nature being what it is, especially when a big team is involved in ingesting footage, errors will creep in.
our solution here is to maintain a clear trail to the source tape by prefixing the tape no into the name column.
FCP's media managing being what it is, this has worked reliably for us.
