Bad static on playback

whenever i play a song in iTunes, it is REALLY staticky yet the same songs in GarageBand or another player are clear as day....can anyone think what might be affecting this?

Hi Christopher
I know.. a bit counter-intuitive, but I could not get anything but static recording at the default 44.1hz, but when I changed it - VOILÀ.  It worked fine.
Here's another weird one:  I cannot use the Samson C01 mic without the Samson Pre app that is supposedly no longer supported by Leopard.   Without, all i have is a bassy, muffled sound.  Launch the app, and the mic works fine.   So, not only is it required (despite the fact that even Samson has stated it is no longer required), but all the functionality works well in Leopard.
Go figure.

  • Bug:  multiple tracks with Matrix Reverb causes static on playback

Some of my .bands I developed under an earlier GB sound atrocious under the latest '08 (v4.1.2) -- if I have more than one real instrument track using my Matrix reverb preset, the playback of the second track has static (not subtle at all... clearly a software issue). The track sounded fine when recording it with the same effect on, but the playback is extremely smurfy. I can deselect the effect on the second track and the static disappears (that is, it was clearly not part of the dry track recording).
Do others see this or similar issues?

this has been mentioned by more than a couple of people, unfortunately.
you might try using another reverb plug-in:

  • Static during playback of voice recorded through external mic and mixer

I have an external mixer plugged into my USB and sound quality is great playing through mixer (listening through headphones plugged into the mixer) but when I record and playback of through GarageBand I hear lots of static and clicking sounds. I hear the static whether I play through my external speakers or headphones hooked up to my iMac.
I set up a new Real Instrument > Vocals > No Effects
    Input: Channel 1
    Format: Mono
    Monitor: Off
When I use the Cubase software that shipped with the mixer, to record and playback, the sound quality is fine playing through the computer

I've tried the same switching the mic for a guitar with no problem. The guitar sounds perfect while playing and in playback but with the mic I can't hear anything when recording and the volume on the fader is very low so I have to normalise the track to hear the vocals are a good level. I've always done this with no issues but now it seems to be bringing out all these horrible noises. I should add that the vocals themselves are perfectly fine with no distorting, only this strange static sound during gaps in speech. Not sure if that narrows it down at all?
Ok the fact that the volume is very low is something to correct first, because that's not right. That mic requires either Phantom power or two AA batteries to function, do you have that provided?   The Mic input gain on the Line-6 Pod is where you raise the recording level.

  • Podcasting... echo, really bad static, echo gone

Okay, I have read other posts where users detail the same issue, but I've yet to find a resolution. I will provide my setup, then provide a link to a section of my podcast showing the issue.
    I am recording a podcast with GarageBand '08. I have a MacPro 2 x 2Ghz Dual-Core Xeon. 3 GB RAM.
I have two mics. Both mics are Microsoft LifeChat LX3000 USB headsets. Both mics are combined using LineIn into SoundFlower 2ch. SoundFlower 2ch is then set at the input device in GarageBand. I have alternatively tried using Audio Midi Setup to create an aggregate device, setting each channel to its own track in GarageBand, but the same static appears.
This static is very random. Somewhere, the timing is getting off or something. I have provided a link below which you can listen to. If you listen closely, you will hear an echo of the female. The faint echo is what is being picked up by my mic (the secondary mic). The static then starts, lasts for about 14 seconds, then slowly fades away. The echo is then gone.
In sound file linked below, I have provided about 10 seconds before and 10 seconds after the severe static. What would cause the audio to get out of whack? I've read much about USB latency, but if that is the case, why is only 1 mic starting to echo, and only presenting static? What can I do to correct this?
Note: The echo which precedes the static appears very gradually, getting so bad that this static appears, and then the echo is gone!?!?!?!

I can't tell you how many different ways I've tried to record. We have 14 podcasts, so 14 various setups trying to resolve this.

  • How do I fix bad static?  Can you change channels?

love the headset! It fits great and the base is the bomb! But no matter where I use it I get horrible static. Is there a way to adjust the channel or something? Or do I just have a bad headset?

I've tried 5 or 6 different BT headsets as well as the included Apple headsets and the Vibe Duo.
ALL of them have some background hiss or static, so I assume this is a fault of the phone or ATT service (I wish I had another model ATT phone to test and narrow it down). I've had 3 iPhones with the same problem, so it seems to be indicative of all iPhones. The noise gets worse when driving.
Noise reducing headsets work best (i.e., Plantronics 665). The Jawbone only reduces noise in one-direction (outbound to the person on the other end). Plantronics works in both directions.
I wish Apple would take a look at this issue. But I won't hold my breath, because an Apple "Genius" just basically looked at me like I had three heads when I told him about this.

  • Static during playback with soundfonts

I'm trying to bring a MIDI file into GarageBand and play it back using various soundfonts. However, when I choose "DLS Music Device" as my tone generator and assign a soundfont, I hear a loud hissing and crackling sound during playback. I only hear this when I'm using a soundfont, not with any of GarageBand's internal sounds.
I've tried several soundfonts, most of which I've used successfully in other applications, but none of them will play consistently in GarageBand without the hissing.
    Any ideas?

  • Popping and static during playback

When I am playing music through iTunes there is a static popping sound in the background. This occurs through speakers and headphones (brand new Bose) but does not happen when listening to the same songs on my iPod. As far as I can tell it is happening on my entire library. Any help or suggestions?
    HP   Windows XP

I found a nearly complete solution here:
    http://www.geekzone.co.nz/juha/1308
It says to reduce the Quicktime Audio Tab setting from 24 bit to 16 bit.
It was easy and made a big difference (90% of prpoblem seems solved)

  • Static on playback?

When I play my i tunes on my computer, it is choppy and some background static.  When I play XM online radio music, it sounds just fine.
    What is the problem?

I'm pretty sure these are from the earphones. I might be mistaken but it seems to be coming from my left earbud as well. I am pretty sure that it is the earphones, so apple should replace them. If that does not solve the problem, then it is your nano (which I doubt it would be) and apple will replace it.

  • Ipod has real bad static

I have just recently put a couple of new songs on my pod and it just started havin static. I noticed it at first when the backlight was on it wasnt staticy and when it off it had static and now it has static in it all the time on every song and video. What could I do to possibly correct this.

This sounds stupid but mine done the same and i felt like an idiot after, but have you checked the headphones? If it does the same, delete the songs off iTunes but keep the files(it will ask if you want to)and go to File, Add File To Library and click on the songs you deleted. Hope that works...Good Luck

  • Xmod and BAD static and crac

I'm having a problem with my Xmod that I purchased in November.
Recently, I'm pretty sure the problems started within the last month, there has been a lot of issues with sound quality from the device. When certain applications have focus, or even just clicking the mouse on a blank area in Opera, the sound pops and becomes laced with static. The worst I've noticed is when Steam (Valve's content distrobution program) has focus and I drag the window on the desktop. Whatever audio is playing will actually slow down and play at around half speed.
Now I'm not sure if this is a problem with the Xmod or jusy my system, but when I have my speakers plugged directly into the computer I have absolutley no problems whatsoever, even when performing CPU intensi've processes such as rendering. I'm running on a .66Ghz Core Duo with GB RAM, and my normal CPU usage is around 0%, so I'm pretty sure it's not my system struggling to process the data.
I'm using a Gateway M285-E Tablet PC, and the built-in audio device is a SigmaTel chip, but I'm not sure of the exact model number.
Any help or insight would be appreciated.

Today I installed an Audigy 2 ZS and I experience the same problem. I use a 2. System, which used to be loud enough to make my neighbours know what I was listening to...
But now I can hardly hear anything... I tried the original drivers, but I also installed alternati've drivers, but they made no difference. Has anyone got an idea about what to do?
Maybe it's a problem with the mainboard? I have a DFI Lan Party SLI board, with the nForce 4 Chipset.Message Edited by Mopsi on 09-02-20072:08 PM

  • New problem - bad cracks during playback

I'm getting back cracks and crackling during playback despite the fact that there is no obvious cause. The cracks happen when I use any effect (though my gut feeling tells me this isn't the underlying problem). I'm using UAD vst plugins but and Adobe effects but I am no where near being maxxed out, only using around 50-60% of my vst power. The cracks happen even when I use Audition's Studio Reverb or graphic eq.only, no vst.
It sounds like a latency type of cracking or the type of cracking that happens when my plugins are maxxed out (nearly 100% on my meter) but as I said, that's not it (although it goes away when I remove all effects, even Audition effects).
The strange thing is I am only working with 3 tracks!!!...2 guitars and vocal. I have many sessions with full band, easily 2 dozen tracks and not had this problem before. But with only 3 tracks...something is screwy.
When I change the latency the cracking gets worse (currently it's at 1.5 seconds).
Any ideas on how I can troubleshoot this??? My software is up to date and my system is virus checked. I'm also an experienced Audition user (years).
    Thanks for any ideas.

Hey guys, my audio computer just developed this crackling on playback about 2 weeks ago.
On mastered out audio files, the crackle is not there, but on playback on new projects (started over the last 2 weeks) there is crackle in the playback on all tracks (I get crackling on playback on my speakers and on my headphones).  Even individually, if I mute certain tracks.
I found some weird points when playing with new projects:
-I shut down the computer, and started Audition 2.0 again.  I started a new project @ 48000 Htz and 32 bit sampling.  And there was NO CRACKLING on playback (on speakers, on headphones, on mastered test audio files)
-I went back to my problem projects with crackling playback and, yup, my playback had crackling on them
-I mastered out my origional raw audio tracks (from the crackling project timeline) and put them on my new project timeline, and NO CRACKLING DURING PLAYBACK.... hmmmmmmm.
I have no idea why it's doing this.
But if your project is having playback issues.  Try a full shutdown/reboot, open a new project and do a test record to see if there is crackle.  If no crackle on playback, then go back to your crackling project and master out and re-import your raw audio tracks to your new project timeline
If you guys have found another work-around, or a complete fix, post up and lemme know.

  • First Gen 5GB: Static during playback

Help! During playback (using original driver) the sound output suddenly became very noisy/fuzzy/staticky. I erased the drive, reset it and loaded updated drivers but no change. Is this now a paperweight?
    Thanks!

    Hi Clayton,
A couple of ideas: the simplest (but least likely to work) is to look down into the headphone jack to see if you can see the two copper colored contacts. If one appears to be bent in, you could try to very gently ease it out.
    The second is to fix the solder on the earphone jack. This is more complicated (but do-able) and seems to be not too uncommon a problem (is yours a second generation iPod, 20Gb?). You can read my other thread about it here;
    http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?128@@.68bbf90d
Let me know if either of these things work for you.
    Good luck,
    Paul

  • Static in playback

I'm using an audio soundcard to record from two turntables and a mixer to Garageband and when I record, the red lights next to the volume have come one and off, but either way, the play back is full of static. I've messed around with the input volume on my mixer and on garageband itself. I've also tried changing the buffer size in the preferences. I've also tried changing my RCA cables around and the same static always comes out. I'm getting frustrated and have no idea what to do now.

  • BAD static and background noise on Amplitube, with iRig and iPad 3

    Hi all,
This has been dealt with in a different forum on garageband, but I am interested to find out if others are having this issue. To note - this is with
    Amplitube
    iRig
Ipad 3 ( this part is important )
    Scenario;
If I uplug my guitar from my iRig (idea being to remove all external noise influences) I get a constant clicking and fuzz  (seems to sit around 160bpm). Making sure its not the inbuilt metronome, and going to IK's website to follow all directions specifically and exactly - this noise will not go away. If i record a track - the noise gets recorded with, and it can be easily reproduced in the following scenario ->  an ipad3, iRing and amplitube. In fact, i have tried various IK Multimedia apps ( ampkit, iRig Recorder and Amplitube free and purchased!) and the noise seems to be consistent with their software.!
First off - i went back to the music store, who tried various iRig's - all had the same issue. We even tried my iRig in the store's own iphone - and it sounded perfect. So it wasnt the irig itself.
In tandem with this above - i had raised a case with IK multimedia ( Ticket #311578 ) who after hearing about the music store episode - mentioned that it must be my ipad. So i made a booking with apple and off to the store i went.
Apple noticed the noise straight away (and its loud in there during lunch breaks!) - and replaced my Ipad3 on the spot!. No questions asked (he even thanked for doing so much background work to identify the issue)
Guess what - noise still there.
Apple then tried an ipad1, ipad2 and ipad mini - all of which DID NOT have this issue. So, it is only the ipad3.
Apple then (to their credit) raised it higher within apple to R&D, who spent a week on it and responded by saying ( and i quote ) " Nothing has specifically changed between the headphone jack on the 2nd, 3rd or 4th generation or ipad mini, so it is a compatibility issue between your iring and your device and the 3rd generation ipads, and please contact the company (IK Multimedia) to see if they have any solutions for that"
So i then responded the IK multimedia. What did they do?? They closed the case without any communication. I waited a week ( thinking they would be working on it ), when i logged back in and saw that my last email had been doctored to look like i was a happy customer and apple was at fault........ nice.
So i wrote back and re-opened the case. They responded by saying
"We do apologize for any inconvenience caused.  However, in this case, it appears the issue may have to be followed up with Apple, not with IK Multimedia"
Not sure what to do - its really really bad. If I turn a distortion pedal on, or try to record anything - it drives me crazy. Even my girlfriend who knows ZIP about anything technical said "Whats that clicking noise when you play guitar?"
Im just looking for some others out there who may have this problem. As it is easily reproducable - surely I cant be the only one?
    love to hear from you
    Trav
ps - I tried to post this in IK Multimedia's blog, but they locked it so no-one could respond. nice.

I have looked into this ticket, the threads created and our support notes.
1 - We have tested all of our iRig products with the new iPad 3 and they all work fine with AmpliTube.
2 - Any  thread created on the IK forums are locked once passed to support.
3 - We are more than happy to work with Apple as we have done in the past. Hook the support up with Apple support and we'll work on it.
4 - Support referred you to Apple as the issue is with the iOS device and not our product. (Confirmed by your own testing at the apple store)
If there is something we can do to help, we will do it. Period. We want our customers to be happy and make good music. If you'd like a new iRig, lets make an exchange happen. Want to try different one, lets work out the price difference, but the issue here isn't with AmpliTube or iRig.
