Bad thumbnail on video import after rotation

I rotated a video using Quicktime. When I imported it into iPhoto, the movie is fine, but the thumbnail is corrupt. It is sorta tiled from the upper right to the lower left. I've seen this before, but it's been so long that I don't recall the details. Does anyone know what caused this or how to fix it?
Thanks,
Thad

You can try rebuilding the library with all the options selected. That will rebuild the thumbnails but will take a while.
I'd first try exporting the original file out of iPhoto and import it again to see if the thumbnail is still bad. If that's the case rebuilding may not fix it and will just take up a lot of time.
OT
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.

  • How do I remain the mp4 video quality after rotate it?

I was just trying to rotate few videos. I tried but the quality seems so pixelated. I want to know exactly the setting to remain the mp4 quality? Anyone can help? Many thanks!

This particular slide is on a branch, and has to have a "back" button that "goes to the slide last visited".  It would therefore just go around in a loop if I took that approach.  I could write a script 'on enter' to assign a variable with the number of the slide last visited, run through a sequence of looping slides as you describe, and have an advanced action 'back' button to go back to the appropriate slide.  But I can't see a way of doing that with the advanced action expression builder provided.
My alternative approach was to link to a looping youtube video, but I was having all kinds of problems with that as well (all in another thread).
Ideally, we should be able to set a video to loop in the same way as an animation.

however like Himmi.Jimmy in that thread, I cannot import any video.  I have a sony handycam TVR230 and I am trying to use kino.
The AV/C controls work (ie I can rewind the tape), but when I click capture the tape moves forward for 4 to 5 seconds and then stops.  The capture screen stays black and nothing get imported.

Yes, I had to do that too, and because of that I had to downgrade nvidia as well.  I am worried about that as a long term fix.  Arch keeps on marching along and ignoring major upgrades has eventually caused problems for me in the past.  Do you think this is a more general problem or just specific to antique handycams?

If your export looks like the screenshot in post 6, then please write your Publish+Share settings in a reply to confirm your present situation.
    Publish+Share
    Computer
    and then what?
    MPEG
    AVCHD
    XAVC-S
    AVi
    Windows Media
    QuickTime
    Image
    Audio
You might only be seeing MPEG, AVCHD, and XAVC-S in the list because the other are hidden from view. You need to use the small scroll bar to the right of the choices to scroll down to the ones beyond XAVC-S.
If you select MPEG and do nothing but accept the first choice of Presets which is NTSC DVD Standard, then you are going to get a 4:3 export. Under those circumstances, you have a 16:9 project setting, then you are going to get the type of result that you are seeing in post 6.
If you are doing that, then look at the MPEG Presets = NTSC DVD Widescreen, do your export, and let us know if all is OK.
Do you have any special receipt requirements for the export? With further information from you, I will help you with the export setting appropriate for your project and maintaining what you are created in the edit area.
    Thanks.

  • Problems importing iPhone 4 video into After Effects CS5 - Audio sync out

    Hi there,
I am currently experiencing problems trying to import iPhone 4 video into After Effects CS5.
Firstly i'd like to note that the video plays perfectly fine on the iPhone, VLC and in Quicktime Player. The audio and video is in sync.
When I add the footage to After Effects the video becomes slightly out of sync with the audio. I have noticed this in RAM preview and also in renders I did just to test.
I also want to note that, both my iPhone and After Effects have latest software updates.
    Thanks for your help

    Thanks Rick and Mylenium
    Thanks that worked!
I thought that changing the frame rate in the composition settings would have worked.
Instead what I should have done is to go the the footage in the Project Panel then right-click on the footage > Interpret Footage > Main... then Conform to frame rate: Frame rate: 23.986607 (or whatever more accurate frame rate your footage actually is)
I used the more accurate frame rate reading from VLC which went to 5 decimal places. I got that info from the top menu in Tools > Codec Information
Its a shame AE doesn't  pick up on the more accurate fps. It seems that all the videos from my iPhone 4 have slightly different frame rates and I guess I will have to interpret each clip properly.
I hear that the frame rate on the iPhone 4 is different depending on the lighting? I wonder why that would be the case?
Hope this helps anybody else that might face this problem.
    Cheers

  • Imported and created "optimized media" but thumbnails and video is missing!!

    Hi guys,
My i7 MacBook Pro just spent the last 12 hours importing a selection of h.264 .mov's from my Canon DSLR. I had selected "creat optimized media" to convert it all into ProRes at the start like I have for my other projects in FCPX. But this time, once it had completed, only a couple of the clips have thumbnails/ play video when scrubbed over, and the vast majority of the clips have black thumbnails and only play audio. I tried restarting FCPX without any luck... any thoughts on what's going on? If I have to spend another 12 hours doing it over again, I'm going to have one unhappy client.
Between random bugs like this, freezes, crashes and the lack of ProRes LT (I'm bloating all my Canon video files by converting them into regular ProRes and hogging up hard drive space at an alarming rate), FCPX is really starting to get on my nerves. I've been really patient with the software and wanted to like it so much - I even gave it a positive review on the App Store, but Adobe Premiere is looking better and better every day.
Thanks in advance for any help guys.

Just out of curiosity- what happens when you click 'Create optimized media' off in preferences? Also- are the original clips still visible and working on your hard drive- i.e. the H.264 clips from the camera?

  • Preview / Thumbnails for videos not showing

    Hello Guys,
I was hoping someone can help me.
I usually import photos from my Canon 400d and iPhone 4 and 3GS and it's been working fine for a long time.  A couple of weeks ago, it stopped showing the thumbnails for photos and videos.
My settings for import are to render previews with minimal size (and has always worked great like that).  If I try to render standard sized thumbs after import, sometimes it works, and sometimes it hangs with some photos.   I can quickly fix that going into "Develop" mode where it creates the preview correctly.
But for videos, because you can't go into develop mode, it just hangs trying to build the previews.
Note that all videos previous to 07-22-2011 show the thumb correctly.
Some more info on my system and the things I've tried.
    My system is a Macbook Pro 2.66 i7 with 8Gb DDR3
    Lightroom 3.4.1 - 64 bits
    Cameras Canon 400d, iPhone 4 & 3GS
I'm running Lion OS X now but I can see in my catalogue that the blank thumbnails start appearing a week before I upgraded.
My catalog is not too big, around 3K photos
I tried getting rid discarding all the 1:1 previews and rebulding them again.  I works OK for the photos but the rendering hangs when the get to the videos that have been imported after 07-22-2011.
I checked the video properties and they are all the same as old videos (nothing changed in my iphone)  they are .mov files h264 with ACC audio (same as all the previous ones that show the thumbnail correctly)
I tried deleting the .lrdata preview file, and recreating all the previews in standard-size and nothing, then tried with 1:1 preview, but again it hangs when it gets to the videos
I created a new catalog and imported 2 new videos. getting the same result.
    Can anyone help?

    Thanks Geoff.
I used an app called app zapper to completely delete 3.4 and then installed 3.5 RC and the general speed seems to be a 'little' bit better.
But video seem to screw up everything.   Previews are still not rendering for videos and as soon as I get into a mixed folder (videos & images) Lightroom starts to lag badly...

  • Aperture 3.4.5 stuck on import after 15 hours

    OS 10.8.5
    27" iMac 2.8 GHz Intel Core i5
    12 GB DDR3 RAM
Imported several gigs of images from an external HD - RAW, jpg and TIFF. Aperture is still "importing" after 15 hours. Many thumbs not showing.
I checked whether images are imported by using "Show in FInder" method. Most are. Some I had to reconnect because Aperture lost reference to them in the Aperture image folder I designated for import. A lot of thumbnails are missing or not fully formed, and opening files that are properly connected is very slow.
Obviously something is wrong but I don't want to quit Aperture becasue Aperture moving the files rather than copying them, and I fear quitting will lose the files forever.
    Suggestions?
BTW, many quirky issues with the update to 3.4.5. Lots of blank thumbnails that previously existed, some pre-update file thumbs look full of colored dots or zigzags, but they do resolve to full images after opening and waiting a bit. Ugh.
    Thx for help.

    Update
Aperture crashed. I restarted with no real distasters, just annoyances. Thumbnail views now disappear even on images I just worked with.
Some projects have thumbnails OK in Project view but none in Split View.
One project that was importing when my issue happened has some color noise thumbs tha, when queiered via "Show in Finder", report "External volume this was imported from is offline". Not true. Never took those volumes online.
    Question:
Do I delete the "bad", unconnected files from this above project and re-import from a backup folder with "Do not import duplicates" ticked? Should that solve the missing file problem?
However, what's up with the vagaries of thumbnails dynamically disappearing? Whatever I do doesn't seem to re-create them.

  • Why doesn't iMovie 10.0.6 allow me to increase number of thumbnails for videos from my iphoto library?

In iMovie 10.0.6, it gives me a small thumbnail for an entire 10-minute video that is in my iPhoto library. I can't figure out how to make it show the lengthened version of thumbnails so that I can easily find and select the clip I want. Videos imported directly into iMovie provide this option, as they always have. But iPhoto videos do not.

It should run once (for a long time) but after that it should be quick. It sounds like there could be a permissions problem so that it cannot save the thumbnails file so it has to recreate it every time.
The first thing I would try would be to run Disk Utility and repair permissions.
There may be something else in the archives on this. I'll see if I can spot it.

  • MPEG Video Import Issues (Not Trial)

    Hi Everyone,
I am fairly new to PP CS3. Up until recently I have been using basic Video Editing tools. I have decided since I like video editing so much, that I am going to try and go into it full force. So I bought my friends copy of CS3 Master suite off of him (because his company bought him two licenses and he only needs one so I got it cheap) and away I go.
So, with that in mind. Please be patient if I sound like noob because I am. I am a system admin, but when it comes to this stuff, I know very little compared to most of you I am sure.
Right now I am just doing something really basic to get my feet wet. I have imported a bunch of Kids shows I recorded using my Media Center PC and want to make a compilation of just the musical scenes for my little girl. I have done this type of stuff with Pinnacle in the past but I seem to running into a weird issue.
The video's are a standard MPEG 2 DVD compliant format. The capture card I use is a Hauppauge PVR 150 so it does the hardware encoding on the board.
If I watch these files on my TV or in Media Player Classic/WMP/VLC they all look fine. The minute I view them in PP CS3 they get this weird distortion. It looks like digital artifacts from say a bad digital cable stream, except it is all colorful and such. Dare I say the "Technicolor rainbow" :)
I thought at first that maybe it was just because the preview is a lower quality. So I did a small amount of editing and exported the video. After watching the exported video, the weird distortion IS there. So I am not sure what to do about this. I did see one post on the forums that suggested simply changing the file extension to AVI might help. I did this and odly enough, it did fix the video issue, but then the sound was completely out of synch.
I have looked around the forums and seem some references to MPEG file issues but none seem to describe the issue I am having and most seemed related to trial versions of the software not having the MPEG codec licensed. That would not be my situation.
Just as a last note. I know that MPEG files are highly compressed and are usually and especially in the case of DVD's the final product not meant for further editing. However, in this case I am just cutting sections out so I didn't think there would be an issue. Also, as I mentioned above, I have done this without issue on Pinnacle.
If anyone has any suggestions. I would appreciate it.
    Thanks again.

    Kyle,
It sounds like it could be a CODEC issue. I'd start by getting a bit of freeware, G-Spot, http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ and installing it. Run your MPEG-2 in G-Spot and see what it says about it. Your capture card could be doing the compression in a CODEC that PP does not work nicely with, or that it does not/can not access on your system. G-Spot will give you the CODEC used/required. Also, it will render the file with just a few mouse clicks and you can view it, with audio, in G-Spots viewer. How does it look there, just like in WMP?
I assume that you are doing all of the work on the same computer, right? If so, any CODEC available to WMP (and G-Spot) *should* be accessible to PP.
Actually doing a "conversion" to AVI would be better than just chaning the extension of the file. The Premiere-pedia has a full set of FAQs on file conversions. Eddie Lotter, the "gate-keeper" of the pedia offers this link:
    http://premierepro.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ%3aHow_do_I_import_%E2%80%9Cxyz%E2%80%9D_format_files %3F
Hope that the forum does not truncate the URL.
As for sync issues, if the Audio & Video are out of sync by a constant amount, you can alt-click on the Audio and adjust it, until the sync comes in. You will want to Zoom the Timeline and also turn off the "Snap" feature, when you begin adjusting the sync. Find a point that is pretty obvious, like a sound that has a distinct visual associated with it. Dialog can be used, if the visual is shot tight enough to see the actor's lips. Do this BEFORE you do any cutting of the Clip. Once you have matched the sync, then you can cut and all should stay the same. However you should not have to do this, if your file is something that PP can play with. PP likes DV-AVI footage, that one shoots with a DV tape camera best, but should work with what you have, to a lesser degree.
Doing VHS captures to PP on my system (Turtle Beach A-D card) yields an 8 frame sync issue, that I have never cleared up. However, with the above syncing technique, it edits fine. These captures are done AVI uncompressed, but the sync problem exists with all of the possible formats from the TB card. Some day, I need to address this problem, rather than just do the workaround.
As for the exact distortion, that you describe, I have not seen that, but maybe others have and can tell you that I'm full-of-it, but give you a fix. Hey, that's all that's important, right? Believe them.
You might want to go up a level in the hierarchy of this forum (to get ALL versions of Premiere) and do a search for "MPEG + distortion," and similar, to see if someone else has had this problem. The Premiere-pedia is another good source of info too, though its "search" is not as good. I often find that Google does a better job, searching the P-pedia. Premiere-pedia:

    Good luck,

  • Crop after rotating

I have imported a clip that was filmed sideways. After rotating it, I have a narrow pillarbox with very wide black bars. I would like to crop the clip to include part of the black bars on either side, ending up with a wider pillarbox, but it seems that I can only crop within the video frame, which loses most of the picture. Is there a way to do what I want?
    Thanks for any advice!

    No, not in iMovie 08.

  • Very poor video quality after transcoding in Adobe Encore CS5.1

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR!
I have very poor video quality after transcoding the video file (MPEG) in  Adobe Encore CS5.1. Below you see my used settings in my filmproject.
The problem exists after transcoding in Adobe Encore CS5.1. I checked all steps and found out that there is no problem until transcoding. My exported file  in MPEG has very good video and audio quality.
    Facts:
    1. Camcorder: Panasonic AG-AC160AEJ
Operating System : Windows 7, 64 Bit, Ultimate edition
    Source files: MTS files
    Recording settings (clip settings):
    Type: MPEG Movie
    Image Size: 1920 x 1080
    Frame Rate: 25,00
Source Audio Format: 48000 Hz - compressed - Stereo
Project Audio Format: 48000 Hz - 32 bit floating point - Stereo
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1,0
    2. Sequence settings in Premiere Pro
Sequence was created from Clip directly with settings above.
    3. Exporting settings in Adobe Premiere Pro:
Match sequence settings was activated. Now other changes were set.
    4. Exported File:
    Video
    Image Size: 1920 x 1080
    Data Transfer Rate: 25920 kBit / s
    Frame rate: 25
    Audio:
    Bit rate: 384 kBit / s
    Channels: 2 (stereo)
    Frequence: 48 kHz
    5. Transcoding settings in Adobe Encore:
I used different transcoding settings such as automatic DVD Transcoding, CBR and VBR.I also set “use maximum render quality”. But all results were always the same: very poor quality.
Why does the encore transcoding cause such bad video quality?
How can I solve this problem?
    Please help me soon.
    Best regards.

    Hi Ann,
    1) I did not only „Automatic (based on source)“ options in my tests, but also many other customized options.
The results are very poor. I have done a new test with the following settings. The result is also poor:
    Download link: http://www.klavierlehrer-bayern.de/download/test_mpeg2dvd_1.m2v
    Export Settings:
    Format: MPEG2-DVD
    Preset: Custom
Codec: MainConcept MPEG Video, Quality: 5
    Frame Rate: 25 fps
    Field Order: Upper
Pixel Aspect Ratio: Automatic (based on source)
    Render at Maximum Rate: [active]
    Bitrate Encoding: VBR, 2 pass
    Minimum Bitrate (Mbps): 5
    Target Bitrate (Mbps): 9
    Maximum Bitrate (Mbps): 9
    GOP Settings
    M Frames: 4
    N Frames: 12
    Use Maximum Render Quality: [active]
    Multiplexer: None
    2) Why shouldn’t I use the “Match Sequence Settings” in exporting? Because of the big output file size?
I used it and the results are very good as I expected:
    Download link: http://www.klavierlehrer-bayern.de/download/test_MatchSequenceSettings.mpeg
    Export Settings
    Match Sequence Settings [selected]
    1920 x 1080, 25 fps, Upper, Quality 50
    User Maximum Render Quality: [active]
    3) I tried also Dynamic Link in PremierePro (to Encore).
    The results are also poor.
    4) I will test also LagarithLoslessCodec and frameserving +DGMPGDec. But the video is vertical long drawn-ot.
I think I did not use it correctly.
    Regards
