Bad Time to buy Lightroom?

Question:  I am using Lightroom 1.4 and want to upgrade (finally).  However, Lightroom 2.0 has been out awhile now and I wonder if I should wait until maybe the next version comes out.  Of course, when that is is anyone's guess.  But it has to come out soon.  Anyone have any advice?  I'm just a hobbiest so waiting wont kill me.  But I would like to eventually move on from 1.4.
Thanks.

In my experiences in updating about a dozen .lrcats to v. 2, the 1.4 version was left intact. To be completely safe, though- and my experiences were on a Mac- you could not only backup the 1.4 catalog, but after the new one in v 2.4 is created, you could archive it through compression (Stuff; zip, whatever it's now called).
Your 1.4 catalog will be fine on the images now in the catalog, and you should be able to open it for sometime to come. Note, however, that the application - the 1.4 version- should also be backedup, and compressing it on the main drive assures it won't get opened by mistake.

  • Buy Lightroom 5 - when Lightroom 6 is on its way?

    Hey everyone,
I REALLY want to upgrade to Lightroom 5, but I've read that Lightroom 6 is due to come out in March. I'd rather get the 6, but don't want to have to arbitrarily wait two months just so that I don't have to pay for two upgrades. Does anyone know if there's a way to buy 6 in advance, and use the 5 until it comes out or like, is there a time window between when you purchase and a newer version comes out that the upgrade will be automatically included in your earlier purchase? Just wondering if there's a way they motivate people (like yours truly) to buy their version when a newer one is expected.
I really need to upgrade (long story), so I'm hoping there's some way to do this! Thanks for any wisdom y'all can provide.

Well, looks like March 9th, 2015 is the expected release date - The box image, new features and specs have already been leaked out.
There are two things you can do if you want to use LR5 now: (1) Use the 30-day free trial or (2) buy LR5 from Adobe directly or an authorized reseller and take advantage of their 30 day return policy once version 6 is released.
On most product releases they also have a free upgrade policy to the newer version if you buy  the outgoing version right before it's released (here's more info). It's actually a great time to buy Lightroom 5 as most resellers have good deals on LR5 now so you can buy LR5 at the sale price and get LR6 for free... The only risk is if the release date is pushed out by Adobe and you fall outside of the free upgrade window.

  • I'm switching from PC to Mac. I'm using my one time switch for Lightroom. I have elements 7. Can I upgrade or do I née to just buy outright?

If you use the organizer, you need to buy the boxed version of PSE 12. You can usually find it at big box stores and online retailers for less than adobe's upgrade price, if you shop around. You need the boxed version because you get a serial  number that works on both platforms, and you will need to install PSE 12 in windows first, upgrade your catalog, then make a full backup to a removable drive and restore from that to the mac, after installing PSE 12 there.
If you don't use organizer, it doesn't matter.

  • Buying Lightroom + Photoshop Elements / Premiere Pro + MC CS5 ?

    Hi Community,
i would like to know if it makes sense buying Lightroom 3 AND Phtoshop Elements AND Master Collection CS5 ?
I will definately buy soon the CS5 Master Collection, but do the other tools have possibilites / functions and stuff the Master Collection doesnt have  or cant be done with the Master Collection ?
If YES, what are the main differences between LR / PE and the CS5 ??
I have read the product informations for all three mentioned tools, but still can not decide wheather the Master Collection does include the functionality the other two products do (in my opinion and according to the MC CS 5 slogan: the MC CS 5 ist the ultimate software tool that can be everything done with!!!)
Hope for fast reply and wish you an nice weekend.
    regards
    MC

I got PSE 8 which is way more than I need, and then downloaded the trial of Lr3 - which I love. Pse 8 will do advanced when for me when the time comes.  Investigate the features of these two - and see if you actually need MC CS to save money...

  • I'd love to buy Lightroom but I can't cause I'm now living in Australia but I create my account when I was living in Belgium.

I'd love to buy Lightroom but I can't cause I'm now living in Australia but I create my account when I was living in Belgium so it says that I can't buy with this account cause I'm not in Belgium. How can I change my country??

    Try This...
Close All Open Apps... Sign Out of your Account... Perform a Reset... Try again...
Reset  ( No Data will be Lost )
Press and Hold the Sleep/Wake Button and the Home Button at the Same Time...
Wait for the Apple logo to Appear...
Usually takes about 15 - 20 Seconds... ( But can take Longer...)
    Release the Buttons..
    If no joy...
    Reset all settings
Settings > General > Reset > Reset all Settings.
This will return all iDevice settings to factory defaults... you will not lose any data.... But you will have to re-enter all of the device settings.

  • Plug-In for Time-Lapse for Lightroom 5

I'm doing a time-lapse in Lightroom 5 and understand all the steps expect the one towards the end which deals with the Template Browser.  From my understanding in order to export my time-lapse video as a video I will need to downlaod a free plug-in.  What plug in woulf that be and can someone explain the Template Brower more as well?  Also can anyone explain the IRTimelapse sorftware and do I have to buy this on top of the Lightroom 5 as well?

The IRTimelapse software have their own website, you would be better served going there for an explanation. As it's not Adobe software you have to pay separately.

  • Do I upgrade or buy lightroom

I have CS5 and see the upgrade is $200. I tried Lightroom 4 and like the e-mail function and some of the development functions. Lightroom seem like it a easier application. Don't know how I would do a function light sawp heads in portraits and extensive text editing.
Are those functions available in CS6?
Do I keep CS5 and buy Lightroom 4?
    Tks for the help.

I do both, upgrade LR and upgrade PS.
LR adjustments are exactly the same ones you can do in the Camera-Raw plug-in in Photoshop which you’d be doing if you shoot raw-format photos, but unlike Bridge/ACR is much more efficient for 100s or 1000s of pictures.  LR has other functions that photographers might use like uploading galleries or geotagging or printing picture packages, or making photobooks using a specific vendor (Blurb), but LR does not have the layering or precise-selection tools you would use for head-swapping or adding areas of arbitrary text which aren’t what you do in the Camera Raw plug-in, just inside Photoshop, itself.
You can use a newer LR to drive an older PS one photo at a time, using LR’s Edit in PS with LR Adjustments right-click command, and have both sets of functionality having only paid extra for LR.   I almost always just use LR and rarely have to Edit in PS, nowadays, but I don’t slice and dice my picture content, either.
If you upgrade computers in the future and haven’t kept your PS-CSx current (upgrade your CS5 to CS6 in this case) and something in your older version of PS isn’t compatible with your newer computer, anymore, then you’d have to buy PS at the full-price—you can’t skip upgrades, anymore.

  • I *just* want to buy Lightroom, I don't want a "plan".   Surely this must be possible or is adobe just forcing us to buy more than we need?

    Thanks,

Yes, I think they would like you to by the CC plan.  But you can still get the standalone.
    The Trial Download is here:
    https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/tdrc/index.cfm?product=photoshop_lightroom
This is exactly the same as the paid for version but time limited. I seem to recall that the option to convert the Trial to a Paid for version pops up every time you start it.

  • Why we will buy Lightroom!

As a broadcaster I have always tried to stay away from Adobe products as much as possible. Why because they are written by techs for techs and not people in the industry.
For example take Adobe Audition. For years people across the globe used Cool Edit Pro as a sound editor, then Adobe bought the rights to the program and made it so awkward to use that now few people use it.
Lightroom however is the exception, in that it is a program designed to be used by the people it is aimed at.
But by far the number one reason we are buying Lightroom is that for the very first time Adobe have made available FREE on-line tutorials. What a concept Adobe, well done! How nice it is to not have to buy the application then pay extra to learn how to use it.

Hmmm, perhaps youre right John, allow me to rephrase in terms perhaps even you might understand.
For the professional photographer Lightroom is both powerful and simple to use. Two qualities that separate it from almost all other Adobe products, which tend to be needlessly complex with poorly designed interfaces.
On top of this, for the first time ever Adobe have decided to post some basic video tutorials explaining how to use their product
Hence two reasons I would buy this product.
Lets hope that this is a turning point for Adobe in that they realize that "powerful" does not have to mean "complex". Avid or Final Cut Pro are examples of that principal. Both of which obliterate Adobe in the professional NLE marketplace.

Hello, I d like to buy Lightroom but first I want to know if this is possible to install it on two different computers? If not, what happen if I change my computer. Thks for your help.

The standard licence covers installation on any two computers - one being in use at any time.
If you change computers, simply uninstall from the old machine and install on the new - Lightroom doesn't use "dial home" activation and deactivation.

  • The Time To Buy iPad, Or Not?

    Hey everyone,
I have been thinking about buying the iPad ever since it came out and to this date have not been able to. I have the money, but is now the time to spend it on that 9.7" beauty? I would like to use it for web surfing, email, apps(of course), and I would also like to pick up on the reading for the rest of high school. This is the time for me, I need to decide in the very, very near future. I need two burning questions answered though, is it the right time to buy? Also, Which one to get? As far as which one to get, I plan to use this mostly around home and of course whenever I travel. I think that as far as videos go, I would be putting a few on when I take some trips then take them off if I find myself not viewing them often. I would always have my computer relatively close though, so I would be able to get content on and off quick.
Merging into the next question, I would only get the 32GB if I would have it for a while. If the next one would have killer features then maybe I should wait off for the next generation. The feature that I think is guaranteed is a front facing video camera, I don't think that I have a huge need with that. I have my MacBook Pro for most of the stuff like that. I don't know how much I would desperately need the speed bump that could also surface next spring, because, like I said I have a laptop that I do a good amount on. Or do I not need one at this time? I am a big fanboy so this product is in my mind a great buy.
I need some help here, just tell me what you think. Anyone who has been in the same situation or is in it themselves, feel free to chime in.
    Thanks for any help.
SIDE NOTE!!!!!: If anyone has some thoughts about refurb iPads coming up, tell me as well. I don't think they are coming since it has been a while.

I just got my 32gb 3G iPad about a week ago for my bday and I'm absolutely loving it. I was planning on buying one myself but was saving up for it. Anyway since it had been a few months since it came out I thought to myself that if I waited this long couldn't I just wait till the 2nd gen but I decided that I still wanted it. Also I figured if the 2nd gen came out and if it had some feature that I just couldn't live without that I could probably sell my 1st gen iPad for a good amount. I've owned every version of the iPhone (except the 3Gs) and I've always been able to resell them for a good price.
The reason I wanted the 3G was in case I wanted to use my iPad somewhere wifi wasn't available. But so far I haven't had to activate the 3G service.
The other thing I love about my iPad is that it really is useful. I've only used my laptop to add movies to my iPad Undoubtedly when school begins I'll need to laptop for writing papers and such. But otherwise my iPad is perfect for carrying around and using everywhere. Until the iPad I was considering buying a new MacBook Pro 13" because my 15" (almost 3yrs old) was just to heavy and cumbersome and I didn't like carting it around, even in the house (4 floors).
Anyways the point of this rambling is if you want an iPad go ahead and get it now.

  • I have a trial version of Lightroom 4.. Will I loose my work if I buy Lightroom 5?

I have a few days left on my free 30 day subscription of Lightroom 4. Can anyone let me know if I need to do anything special (as far as installation, etc) in order to buy lightroom 5? I want to keep my edits, collections, etc.
    Thanks!

    No worries.
Simply install LR5. It will find the catalogs and promot you to update them. This actually duplicates the catalogs to make them compatible with LR5.
You can then delete your LR4 catalog. And uninstall LR4.
